Well, I did and I will never forget her. I attribute all of my educational accomplishments to her. I truly believe that I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the positive impact that she had on me. Mrs. Linda Huckabee was her name and she was my 7th and 8th grade Language Arts teacher when I attended George P. Austin Junior High School in Linden, Alabama.
When I think of the words “exemplary teacher” Mrs. Huckabee’s face always appears in my head. Exemplary stands for very good, excellent, consummate, ideal, commendable, and perfect. Mrs. Huckabee was all of these adjectives mixed into one. For the simple fact that she always illustrated her sincere compassion for each and every one of her students, she made sure that her students grasped a clear understanding of the skill that was being taught, and she never made any of her students feel inferior.
To begin, I cannot think of a time when Mrs. Huckabee ever appeared to be frustrated with any of the students during class time. She was truly an ideal teacher because during class she always had her game face on. Patience was the key ingredient to her success with her students because regardless of how silly the question was that her students may have asked she always responded to it with a smile and a calm voice. Nowadays patience is a factor that can either make or break a teacher. This is why “patience” is my number one priority in my own classroom.
Moreover, Mrs. Huckabee always gave her students real life scenarios. In other words, she always found a way to incorporate whatever skill she was teaching her students into a way that would always answer the question: “how will this help me in the real world?” For the simple fact that many students don’t realize that what they learn in school is suppose to help them to become productive citizens. Mrs. Huckabee would say, “How can you ever get a job if you don’t know how to express yourself in positive way?” In other words, it’s important that students learn to speak properly in school and they will be better prepared to communicate to their future employer.
In addition, Mrs. Huckabee made learning enjoyable. For example, her students were always expected to use a dictionary in her class. For example, whenever her students stumbled across a word that was unfamiliar the students were asked to take out their dictionaries and look it up and use that word correctly in a sentence. I really enjoyed that because it made think outside the box and I strived to learn as many new words as I could.
Finally, Mrs. Huckabee’s classroom told the true story of what kind of teacher she was. In the warm months it was always nice and pleasant. In the winter months, it was always warm and toasty. Her classroom walls were covers with very colorful and inviting posters. She had pictures of famous movie stars, athletes, movie producers, radio personalities, beautiful sports cars, and located directly above her chalkboards were the words “shoot for the stars!!!” And when I was in her class I did; I always tried my best and I dreamed that I could be anything that I wanted to be.
In conclusion, as I stated earlier Mrs. Huckabee is my definition of an “exemplary teacher” and I am truly grateful to have had the opportunity to have had her as my teacher.
