I am a listener of popular music. Personally, I think that the popular music nowadays is quite
different from what it used to be, including both the way of distributing music and the content of
music. Actually, after doing research online I found that the popular music is getting worse. In 2012,
a group of scientists did a research on nearly half a million songs to examine the changes in music
between 1955 and 2010 (Matson, 2012). They found out none of the changes on music necessarily
good based on the examination of timbre (sound color, texture, tone quality), pitch (the harmonic
content of the piece) and loudness of pop songs (Matson, 2012). Researchers found that the timbral
variety is steadily declining after 1960, which implies that songs are becoming more and more

still have the same subject matter. It seems that the lyrics to songs don't matter much in pop culture,
judging by the songs played on pop radio that involve sex, drugs, and partying. Those like me who
truly have passion for music realize that lyrics are, in fact, important, if not the most important part
of a song. Those that are as passionate about music as I am tend to appreciate a song more if its

Melody– This seems like one of those earlier straight forward pop songs at first. The melody is
hummable in the first part more so than less then in the later. You might even catch yourself bobbing

Funk music and Pop music are two very similar yet very different genres. Pop music has a wide
variety whereas funk is much more concise. They both have similar instrumentation and notation

Research is starting to show that pop music has many benefits to motivate students, what place does
pop music have in the music classroom curriculum? Though the Tanglewood Symposium stated that
Educators should include ALL types of music in their curriculum, Pop music has struggled to find a
place in the music curriculum (Woody, 2007). Robert Cutietta (2007) went so far as to comment that
the integration of Pop music in the classroom had become a "Bait–and–Switch" Technique used by
teachers. This was not the intent of the Tanglewood Symposium but has been the direction that it has
taken (Woody, 2007). Most pop music has not been created to be played by the large–group
ensembles in the public schools. Most of this genre of music has been arranged for marching bands,
show choirs, and pep bands, not for the more traditional concert bands and choirs. (Woody, 2007)
Educators are still taught and teach with the model that was created in the early 1900s for all of the
ensembles, not just the large–group ensembles. This creates problems in finding Music Authenticity

people. By concentrating on the areas that the consumers are susceptible, many businesses annually
make sales based on same type of audience over and over again. An example is the pop music
industry. Those categorized under "Pop" always have a set target: young children and teenagers,

So, how do businesses determine whether they should exploit the weaknesses of the consumers or
adhere to the quality more? What condition or situation sets two types of business policies apart?
The answer lies in the size of market. Businesses in the industries of big and guaranteed markets
often exploit the consumers ' weaknesses, as described in the case of pop music industry. The big
and guaranteed markets usually have limited number of major companies that are successful. Such
markets include music, selected types of automobiles, and computers. Because the market is big, the
presence of consumers is guaranteed. Hence, the success comes to the business that can best target
the weaknesses of consumers and produce largest amount of sales. On the other hand, small and
fickle markets demand quality. As seen in the case of freelance writing industry, there are some
cases in which there are many small businesses trying to gain the attention of selected number of
consumers. In these types of businesses, the survival requires finding what the consumer needs and
