This document provides instructions for students to analyze chapters from Mary Rowlandson's captivity narrative. Students will be assigned to groups and each group will analyze a different "Remove", or chapter. For their assigned Remove, students are to chart the key events, Rowlandson's descriptions of Native Americans, her feelings toward them, references to God's mercy and protection, and references to scripture as comfort. They will cite evidence from the text to support their analysis. The document encourages students to carefully read the instructions and text, discuss it with their group members, and ask the teacher for guidance if needed.

2. You will each have a different “Remove” to close read
and
CHART in your TRIO (Removes 1-19)
Be ready to summarize your remove for the class.
CHART

• WORDS SHE USES TO DESCRIBE INDIANS (CONNOTATIVE or DESCRIPTIVE)
• HER FEELINGS TOWARD THE INDIANS (A few telling words of the sentence & Cite paragraph)
• TIMES SHE REFERED TO GOD’S MERCY ON HER (Summarize or use a few key words of the
sentence & Cite paragraph)
• TIMES SHE REFERED TO GOD PROTECTING HER (Summarize & Cite)
• TIMES SHE REFERED TO SCRIPTURE AS COMFORT (Cite – only cite one of these)

• Order of operations:
1. Concentrate and read the passage or directions again with purpose.
2. Consult your group members and discuss – listen and talk it through – to
arrive at a consensus for an answer.
3. Ask me – I will give you direction for clarity.
Follow the steps above! Slow down, read, think, talk, and chart! If you have
exhausted options #1 & #2 and still cannot find or express your response, I get
