Oprah Winfrey, famous talk show host and philanthropist,...
Oprah Winfrey, famous talk show host and philanthropist, can be considered a hero by any
standards. Her life is an almost perfect representation of the mythological hero archetype.
Commonalities include; overcoming extreme obstacles through her rise from a rough childhood,
early recognition of talents in her career and an accomplishment of great deeds through her work as
a philanthropist. Oprah is an inspiration to young women everywhere, proving that anything is
possible. She will be remembered as a great social hero of our time.
Oprah was born in a small, rural town in Mississippi to an unwed teenage mother. Even though her
birth was not miraculous like that of other heros, she made up for it in her early years of life with an

Oprah focused on topics that mattered, like cancer, substance abuse, and other important social
issues. Her empathetic interviewing style shaped journalism today. Before Oprah, journalists would
never shed a tear or empathize with their interviewees. Today, this is a very common practice. One
could say that Oprah's television show qualified as one of her "great deeds" as described in the hero
archetype because of the social change it helped bring to the United States. Her early acceptance of
the LGBT community alone helped turn the country in a different, more accepting direction. Oprah
is now the most famous and wealthy african–american woman in the world. Her level of success and
rise from hardships is truly unprecedented.
Oprah Winfrey's heroism extends beyond her immensely successful career and into her personal
endeavors as a highly regarded philanthropist. Her private charity donates millions of dollars to
causes around the globe. It made accomplishments like helping to build schools in developing
countries and supporting women's shelters. Oprah is also a big supporter of animal rights, winning
the 2008 Person of the Year award from the animal rights group PETA. This could be considered a
second great deed, or rather many great deeds, Oprah has performed. Her philanthropic work will
benefit many generations to come, more directly from the billion dollars she has written in her will
to be donated directly to charity. Oprah's life is that

A Non Talk On Giving Talk Analysis
Lucianne Walkovicz used several examples of her own advice from her article "A Non Talk on
Giving Talks" in her talk about starlight. Her use of empathy in telling the audience her story of her
first sight of starlight as well as using images intended to evoke emotion captivated her audience not
only in the beginning but also throughout her talk. In her article "A Non Talk on Giving Talks" she
stresses to not make wordy slides, for this causes the audience to choose between listening to the
speaker and reading the slide. During her presentation, she did not use words but instead used
images to keep the audience's attention while she spoke. Another rule she stressed in her article was
to not use flashy slides or lots of animations. None of

Talk Shows: Jerry Spring And Dr. Phil
In the world of television shows and entertainment today, talk shows have been the most
entertaining and hyped television program in the world. As any human being, they crave to be a part
of a drama, this gives the exciting life many people are obsessed with. As a talk show gives many
advice and opinions, they mainly focus on the gossip and mistakes of celebrities and people in
general. So it doesn't matter where, when, or who is hosting a talk show, they all have the standard
norm of showing negative scenarios or talk about celebrities and even family social problems. For
instance, there would be more of a comical tone of a talk show like Ellen, which give more than
gossip, but gives singers, dancers, and like "Damn Daniel" a change of fame. ... Show more content

With so many talk shows in the world and in America, it has brought millions of fans to listen and
take in the drama. This has led to how popular a television talk show could get and with more gossip
and drama, it brings more and more of the audience closer. Two of the most comparable and
contrastable talk shows are Jerry Spring and Dr. Phil, this became an easy choice because of how
extremely different they are but how they can still be similar. They both are comparable when drama
is brought into their shows and how they are actually hand, weather its right or wrong. Both shows
are similar also because of how they both enjoy the stirring of drama that is on their shows and how
much fans they are receiving. They both also offer a solution to the issues that gives the people a
change to either fix it or leave it. In be a contrastable show, they both are extremely different from
each other. In Jerry Springer, he offers drama with action, which gives the people on trial to fight it
out and sort it their way. Jerry Springer also shows everyday problems like cheating, lying, and even
"coming out the closet" moments. While Dr. Phil is a doctor who mainly focus on the more
important things that could potentially ruin someone's life. Dr. Phil gives therapy, advice, and
services that most talk shows do not provide. He gives actual solution and plans in a first step to
become better. While both shows may differ they both can easily be similar with the number of
drama that can be within one episode of their

The Culture of Talk Shows Essay
The Culture of Talk Shows If social order is not a given, if it is not encoded in our DNA, then to
some extent we are always in the process of producing "virtual realities," some more functional than
others.
Habits, routines, and institutions are the patterns that create the "world taken for granted."
Knowledge of how to behave is contained in cultural scripts that are themselves products of human
interaction and communication about the nature of "reality." Shame, guilt, embarrassment are
controlling feelings that arise from "speaking the unspeakable" and from violating cultural taboos.
Society is a result of its boundaries,of what it will and won't allow.
As we watch, listen, and are entertained, TV ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rather than being mortified, ashamed, or trying to hide their stigma, "guests" willingly and eagerly
discuss their child molesting, sexual quirks, and criminal records in an effort to seek
"understanding" for their particular disease.
Yet these people remain caricatures, plucked out of the context of their real lives, unimportant
except for their entertaining problem. (In real life someone might question the benefits of publicly
confessing to people who really don't care about you or don't have the expertise to give advice.
Exploitation, voyeurism, peeping Toms, freak shows all come to mind.)
The central distortion that these shows propound is that they give useful therapy to guests and useful
advice to the audience. And that they are not primarily designed to extract the most riveting and
most entertaining emotional displays from participants. This leads to such self–serving and silly
speeches by hosts as: "I ask this question not to pry in your business but to educate parents in our
audience" (Oprah, trying to get graphic details from a female guest who claims to have been
sodomized by her father) and "Do I understand, Lisa, that intercourse began with your dad at age 12,
and oral sex between 5 and 12? Do I understand that you were beaten before and after the sexual
encounters? (Phil, reading from prepared notes, to a crying teenager).

Raymond Carver What We Talk About When We Talk About Love...
In the short story "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" by Raymond Carver, tells of
how two couples gather around a kitchen table drinking gin and talking about love. For some odd
reason, no one knows what love is. One character in the story, Mel says it is "spiritual" or
"absolute", trying to perceive what it truly is. The characters talk and tell stories about their own
experiences in what it meant to them. The only problem was that no one could tell wrong from right
on what love meant. Towards the end of the story, after a couple rounds of gin, both couples sat in
darkness and silence, completely motionless as if they were stuck in a daze. This puzzles the couples
for some time to question their own love towards one another in their life. The true meaning of love
is still unknown. In order for the reader to have a proper understanding of the story, they must bear
in mind that the "presence of light" shows a personified attribute to love being in the room with
them and to acknowledge the dark awakening at the end of the story.
As mentioned before, Carver uses a "dark" ending to kind of toy with the reader's mind that the
characters knew what love is and let alone; have it towards one another. This makes the reader
question Carver's ending about the characters as to why they are sitting in complete silence and
motionless. While reading the story the reader can see that the characters are intoxicated, discussing
love as if they couldn't tell who or what it is. For

The Talk Argument
In the advertisement, "The Talk", Procter and Gamble's goal was to spark a conversation over this
heavily heated topic and gain supporters due to their perspective. They do this by using the
rhetorical mode of pathos to connect emotionally to all mothers.
One of the hardest things for most mothers, especially my own mother, is to see children being hurt
either by physical or verbal violence. Procter and Gamble use this to their advantage by showing
racism taken by children at different ages in life. This may lead not just African–American mothers
but American mothers to be saddened by this advertisement and see how hard it can be for the
African–American race. This, as explained by the spokesman for Procter and Gamble, is the
company's main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With such things as police brutality and racism on the rise, African–American mothers may have
believed that there was no hope. Their children were never going to live in a society where they
were fully accepted. Just a month before the commercial came out, President Trump endorsed the
idea of police brutality, "Like, don't hit their head, and they just killed somebody – don't hit their
head," "I said, you can take the hand away, okay? When you guys put somebody in the car and
you're protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over (The Washington
Post?")The idea that some of our society, especially the President Of The United States, still
believes in this is a good reason for African–American mothers to be scared to death for their
children. This is why the Talk is supposedly so common. P and G also spoke out saying that this is
not an unusual occurrence in our world, "It's unfortunate that in the current environment everything
becomes politicized, because the talk between a mother and daughter isn't politicized at all; it is just
reality. It would be great if we lived in a society where we didn't need the talk (The Washington
Post.") No, not everyone is going to be stereotypical towards African–Americans but just the fact
that there are still people out there in American society who have racist beliefs must be very
frightening to the parents of African–American children. Even though

'Foreigner-Talk' Foreigner Talk, Interlanguage Talk?
"Foreigner–Talk", "Teacher–talk", "Interlanguage Talk". According to Krashen (1982), Foreigner–
talk develops when adjustments are made to the language to ensure non–native or proficient speaker
comprehension and it is also referred to Teacher–talk in the classroom.
This is based on the evidence that if "motherese" or "caretaker speech" is effective with children's
L1 acquisition, it would stand to reason that similar speech methods would help L2 acquisition.
"Foreigner talk" is used by native speakers to communicate with non–native speakers, whereas as,
"teacher talk" is used in L2 classroom by the teacher and finally "Interlanguage Talk" focuses on
simple input used for real authentic communication. White (1987) goes onto argue that learners are
at a disadvantage as they do not acquire the crucial complexities of the language when spoken to in
caretaker speech. Whereas McCarthy & Carter, (1997) feel that it is not automatically simplification
of input but rather an approach that incorporates repetition and replacement of words
"relexicalisation" to encourage conversation through comprehensible input.

Language Devices Used In 'Girl Talk And Boy Talk'
For this project I recorded a 30 minutes conversation between two couples (two males and two
females) dining at a restaurant after the movies. The first couple is Stephen (22) and Lina (21), and
the second couple is Daniel (24) and Chue (21). Stephen and Daniel are brothers while Lina and
Chue are co–workers. With this, there is at least a comfortable level. Stephen and Lina sat next to
each other which is also across from Daniel and Chue. For this recording, I observed four different
language device used: I'm sorry, I'm not apologizing (Tannen), Women's language: powerless
language (Lakoff), Relationship miscommunication (Tannen), and lastly "Informal talk: Girl talk
and boy talk (Eisikovitis)." Two of the language device used in this conversation is the "I'm sorry,

Stephen and Lina has been dating for two years while Daniel and Chue are going on their two
months. Being that Stephen and Lina have thousands of memories, they started telling Daniel and
Chue stories about their first encounter, first impressions, and the good and bad memories. During
the storytelling, there was a lot of 'so' used, a lot of "not apologizing" and less of "I'm sorry." At one
point, Stephen told a time where Lina and him got into arguments and when Lina gots frustrated she
used a lot of curse words (which seem like girls are more likely to curse). Stephen mentioned that
Lina did say sorry but after when they reconciled. As Stephen told this memory, Lina interrupted
and apologize again, but more in a jokingly way than in a serious way. This interruption was quite
powerful as Lina take on and finish the sentence for Stephen (Lakoff). It addition, it seems like the
words "sorry" has become a habit or is ritual for Lina. However, this put them at a balanced–
position because Lina admit to her fault and Stephen received the apology (both share the blame).
Stephen and Lina also talked about another argument they had in

Reflection Paper On TED Talk
TED Talk Summative Reflection The beginning of a presentation is what must grab the audience's
attention and tell them what's about to happen. I think I succeeded in informing my audience, but
definitely could have improved the interest factor of my video. My introduction is a simple title
animation going into my presentation, and my introduction is a very basic overview of what my
presentation will be covering. Looking back on the example given and at other students' videos, I
realize some music and a hook could have been very helpful. A hook is especially important because
it gets the audience excited for what's coming, and I notice now that my opening lines are pretty
tame. Of course, I find it interesting, but my audience has not seen the video, so they ... Show more

So, I used some funny images and some informative ones, and I'm not sure if that was the best
choice. Perhaps higher quality images that backed up my points, even if there were fewer of them,
would have been the better choice. I think my visual aids complimented my audio component, but
they could have been more in depth representations of my talking points as a whole. Finally, it
comes to my oral presentation skills. I would say I have average ability to communicate orally,
which I hoped to improve by splitting up my speech into different sections. I recorded each of these
separately, sometimes recording seven or eight takes, for the sake of cutting out most stumbles and
producing the best quality video I could. However, I think I still could have improved. There a few
mistakes which I left in, and could have redone if I'd had better time management skills. I was
unsure about how expressive to be, as my video was half me talking and half narration. I tried to be
reserved and easy to understand, but I think going bigger and being more animated would have
helped keep my video interesting and fun to watch. Re–watching myself speak made me realize that

Breaking A Talk
The provided information in the classrooms and lectures always have small incorrectness and
mistakes. Speakers need to be careful about their information but it is inevitable to make mistakes.
From the audience view, what is the best reaction when you hear something wrong in the lecture?
Some people break the lecture and point the mistake instantly some other wait until all audience
gone and then discuss with the lecturer. In my view is not effective to break the talk and point the
incorrect thing because it can be not important or you might be wrong. To begin it is worth
mentioning that the mistake might be not important. It might not have a close relation with the
context and breaking the talk and asking about the rightness of that might be waste of the time. For
instance, there was a conference in our university about Green Energy. The lecturer had a mistake
about the type of their servers they use to estimate wasted energy. it is obvious that the type of
server was not closely related to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second reason that I think breaking the lecture is not a good approach is that you yourself might
be wrong about the mistake. This can be solved easily after the lecture when all the audience is
gone. If all the listeners break the talk because of a wrong matter it could destroy the talk. On the
other hand, if you present your thought after the lecture, the talk would coherent without disruption.
There are several reasons preventing you to disturb a talk but because of the dearth of time, we only
mentioned these two. In conclusion I think that the coherent and continuous lecture is far better than
a disrupted one. Letting a Lecture to continue without disturbance is also respect to the speaker and

Oprah : The Top Rated Talk Show
In the fall of 1983, Oprah moved again, this time to Chicago, to host WLS–TV 's "A.M. Chicago," a
half–hour morning talk show that was suffering from perennially poor ratings. It was the beginning
of big things for Winfrey.
"My first day in Chicago, September 4, 1983. I set foot in this city, and just walking down the street,
it was like roots, like the motherland. I knew I belonged here," she would later say.
Winfrey was an instant success as a talk show host. In a few short months after taking over, her
show surpassed then–reigning talk–show king "Donahue" to become the top–rated talk show in
Chicago. Other Chicago luminaries noticed the rising star in their midst, including nationally
renowned film critic Roger Ebert, who helped Winfrey land her first deal to host a nationally
syndicated talk show.
With the ink dry on September 's syndication deal, Winfrey's show was broadcast nationwide,
expanded to a full hour and renamed "The Oprah Winfrey Show." At the same time, Winfrey
founded Harpo Productions ("Harpo" is "Oprah" spelled backwards), which would later branch out
to include Harpo Radio, Harpo Print and Harpo Films.
Now a national program, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" again trounced "Donahue," bringing in twice
the national audience of her talk show rival.
To better capitalize on that success, Harpo Productions assumed complete ownership and total
production responsibilities for "The Oprah Winfrey Show" from Capitol Cities/ABC. With the 1988
deal, Harpo Productions

Television and Media
Daytime Talk TV is Immoral
Today's society has become a visually based culture and, as a result, people learn and act from what
they see. With the advent of television, many programs have been aired ranging from news
programs to sitcoms and from game shows to talk shows, but talk shows, today, have the most effect
on the public. Daily, viewers turn on their televisions and many are bombarded with images of sex,
drugs, and violence on the talk shows. Unfortunately, many people are either disturbed or affected
by what they see. As Vicki Abt and Leonardo Mustazza point out in their article, "Coming After

As children, they are in the stage of life when they are learning the most and absorbing everything
they see, and it is natural for most of them to repeat what they see. Adolescent years are very crucial
for learning how to behave and learning right from wrong, but talk shows are destroying children's
morals and their outlook on society. Therefore, there is no doubt that they are having a negative
effect on our future, the children.
In addition to affecting children, talk shows are affecting adults as well. Adults are observing these
programs as much as children are, if not more. Our society is continually affected by what is seen,
and consequently, there have even been cases of violence as a result of watching one of these talk
shows. For instance, in 2000, a man by the name of Jonathan Schmitz murdered a gay man, Scott
Amedure, after watching an episode of Jenny Jones in which Amedure admitted that Schmitz was
his secret crush according to Ellen Willis (34). Most likely, that tragedy would not have occurred
had it not been for a talk show like Jenny Jones that presents immoral topics for millions of viewers
to see. This just further proves that talk shows have a negative effect on their viewers.
Moreover, the viewers of the talk shows are not only affected that way, but some may also relate to
the talk shows and in effect, "they believe there is a direct connection between the fictional world

People Should Follow the Code of the West, Talk Less; Say...
The code of the west is things to live by, they were never actually written down, but they were
something that everyone in the west seemed to live by. It was a different time that these people lived
in and a lot of the "laws" that they lived by are not even considered in today's society. One of the
"laws" that I believe should people should always follow is talk less, say more. This is something
that means a lot to me and the world that I live, and grew up in. This is a code that does affect you
throughout your whole life and never loses meaning, no matter how young or old you are. Talk less;
say more is the most important and the most meaningful "rule" in the codes of the west. This code,
talk less; say more, is one that still really ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the game of basketball this is a big one. When someone falls and you help them up it says a lot
about who you are as a person, yet if they fall and you say something to them that could be very
rude, you are degrading yourself with the words that you have said. Players like this are known and
people know them as the players that are very unrespectable and rude. The more they say the more
they are hated and the less that people say the more they mean. Respect is something that is earned
and it is not earned through the things that you say, but the things that you do. If you are trying to
earn someone's respect I guarantee you that if you just talked to them all of the time they would not
like for that. You have to prove it through the things that you do and the ways that you act. This was
a big thing back in the west. If a new guy came to town he did not earn respect through all of the
people he talked to and the stories that he told, because those were just stories. He had to earn it by
what he did. This is where actions really speak louder than words. Respect is also something that
everyone in life is looking for, whether they know it or not and sometimes they think they have done
everything to deserve it, when really they have not done the most important thing; prove they can

Talk Shows
TALK SHOWS The television talk show is, on the face of it, a rather strange institution. We pay
people to talk for us. Like the soap opera, the talk show is an invention of twentieth century
broadcasting. It takes a very old form of communication, conversation, and transforms it into a low
cost but highly popular form of information and entertainment through the institutions, practices and
technologies of television.
The talk show did not originate over night, at one time, or in one place. It developed out of forty
years of television practice and antecedent talk traditions from radio, Chatauqua, vaudeville and
popular theater. In defining the talk show it is useful to distinguish between "television talk"

Successful talk show hosts like Mike Wallace, Johnny Carson, and Barbara Walters bridge
generations of viewers. The longevity of these "super stars" increases their impact on the forms and
formats of television talk with which they are associated.
Television talk shows originally emerged out of two central traditions: news and entertainment.
Over time hybrid forms developed that mixed news, public affairs, and entertainment. These hybrid
forms occupy a middle ground position between news and entertainment, though their hosts (Phil
Donahue, Oprah Winfrey, and Geraldo Rivera, for example) often got their training in journalism.
Approximately a third of the major talk show hosts listed at the end of the essay came out of news.
The other two thirds came from entertainment (comedy in particular).
Within the journalistic tradition, the names Edward R. Murrow, Mike Wallace, Ted Koppel and Bill
Moyers stand out. News talk hosts like Murrow, Koppel, and Moyers do not have bands, sidekicks,
or a studio audience. Their roles as talk show hosts are extensions of their roles as reporters and
news commentators. Their shows appear in evening when more adult and older aged viewers are
watching. The morning host teams that mix "happy talk" and information also generally come from
the news background. This format was pioneered by NBC's Sylvester "Pat" Weaver and host Dave

In The Talk In The Talk? Collide? Nudge? Think
In the talk "Nudge? Nudge? Think. Think. " One of the main speakers was Gerald Dworkin. One of
Dworkin's main points was that he is open to defend paternalism. He begins his talk by saying that
the way he's going to talk about nudges aren't the way we are thinking, but rather it's about using the
term in a specific way, with the result of accomplishing something specific. He continues on to
explain that in Yiddish, nudges tend to do with someone that is complaining or is annoyed by
something. Dworkin then mentions the example of traffic in Chicago. The traffic in Chicago on the
bridge was quite bad and there were many accidents that happened. They tired various ways for
people to be careful and slow down their speed on the curve. Then someone

Book Talk : A Reflection On Book Talk
Reflection on Book Talk Scientifically, there are 7.2 billion people in the world. If everyone had five
minutes to share their life story, it would roughly take around 71,000 years to hear them all. Even
though this time does not exist, there is still the power to hear the stories of as many people that we
can, because hearing "stories make us more alive, more human, more courageous, more loving"–
Madeleine L'Engle. The overall idea of this book seems extremely powerful and interesting. Out of
the stories that were told, there were two that stood out to me, the story about the woman with the
man at the bakery shop as well as the the story of the man who was stuck in the mining shack. First
and foremost, the story of the girl that had the encounter with the man at the bakery shop was
extremely interesting to me. Before coming to this book talk, I was giving myself self pity for
having to take a test later that night, but after hearing this story I realized that there are far worse
situations. I always new that other people had had rougher lives, but it always gets put in the back of
my mind. I think it is always important for these life stories to be presented over and over to be
placed not in the back of our minds but right in the front. There are many women that are put in this
position of having no family because of similar situations, but many seem to nod it off and say,
"well that's life". When these situations are placed right in front of us, are we are connected to the
characters/people, we feel more moved to make changes. If nothing else sharing stories similar to
this will empower these women and make them feel heard. This story for me, overall, brought a
good perspective into my life. The second story that made me think deeply was the story of the man
that was stuck in the mining shaft. The idea that the only reason why they were saved was because
of some governor trying to be elected made my heart cry. The idea that some people rank
themselves so much higher than the others around them is saddening and ludacris. I think that this
short story can have so much effect and so much power in the world because I feel like many people
again get stuck in their own world and forget that such situations are

Talk shows are becoming increasingly popular and...
Talk shows are becoming increasingly popular and widespread forms of entertainment, however the
underlying premise behind these shows which was originally the idea of empowering individuals
and allowing them to share their experiences, has been replaced by a focus on celebrity figures and
largely insignificant matters of public interest. The Ellen Degeneres show is a contemporary talk
show which although does include therapeutic narratives of disadvantaged individuals including
Ellen's own struggle with discrimination, is mainly comprised of the disclosing of intimate details of
celebrity lives. Through her use of humour in dealing with issues of a more serious nature, Ellen

Although it may be difficult, discussing traumatic experiences in a narrative format allows
individuals to understand the causes and ramifications of their experiences and consequently begin
to overcome the trauma they have undergone (Pennebaker, 2000). Ellen, herself, shares her
experiences of being discriminated against due to her sexual orientation and how she has struggled
with facing both her friends and family, and the critical public following the revelation of her
sexuality. Ellen's own interview with Oprah Winfrey shortly after her coming out exemplifies the
benefits of talk shows which follow a therapeutic narrative structure as Oprah facilitates Ellen's
discussion of her sexuality and Ellen claims that she feels liberated as she is able to be "completely
honest" and shares her story in order to "inspire others and let them know that it's ok to be gay"
(Lolluzza91, 2013). However, Ellen does not assist in the restorative process an individual
undergoes on her own talk show through adopting a therapeutic narrative format but rather attempts
to support individuals through providing financial aid. Hence, although Ellen may encourage
individuals to come out and share their experiences of discrimination, she does not provide them
with a sense of how to deal with their situation or obtain closure, but instead rewards them for what
she considers their 'bravery'.
Although the Ellen Degeneres show tends not to provide a therapeutic outlet for individuals, it

Small Talk Essay
Small Talk
We've all engaged in some sort of small talk either in the office, on campus, at a party, or other
places where you find yourself in the company of others. For some of us, participating in small talk
may come easily, while for others it may be quite difficult. Some individuals may find small talk to
be irritating while others find it a necessity. In this paper I am going to explore what exactly defines
small talk as such; the reasons why people find the need to engage in small talk; the benefits, and
disadvantages of small talk; is there an ethical approach to small talk; and provide tips on how to
participate in small talk–without it creating an uncomfortable atmosphere.

Wendy Warman, co–author of Loud and Clear: How to Prepare and Deliver Effective Business and
Technical Presentations, gives instructional seminars on how to effectively participate in small talk
for big success. Warman discusses the importance of small talk in order to improve communication,
boost sales, enhance customer service and increase profits in any organization or industry. These are
all very important benefits, which I think everyone could find use for.
Now that we more thoroughly understand the basic means of small talk and what small talk actually
consists of, we need to be aware of the topics chosen for these conversations. There is an ethical
approach to small talk and ethical judgments need to be made. Very frequently small talk is shared
between individuals whom do not know each other well, therefore there are many 'forbidden' topics
that should be avoided. When people do not know each other well it is not a wise decision to discuss
personal information such as salaries or divorce.
Two main topics that should be avoided are religion and politics. The foundationalist's view should
not be considered here since everyone's justified beliefs on these topics might vary. The intent of
small talk should basically be to get to know someone better, keeping in mind other peoples
feelings. Raised emotion may arise if one of these topics is brought

Three Things I Learned From Cameron Russell's TED Talk
Looks aren't Everything. Believe Me, I am a Model
1. Three things I learned from Cameron Russell's TED Talk is that looks are deceiving, people still
judge based on someone's skin color or beauty, and how even if someone looks like the most
confident, pretty, rich, or happy person out there, that may not always the case. Additionally, from
the speaker's five main points, the first main point, "how do you become a model?" illustrates being
named a "model" is something very difficult to become because today's society is very judgmental.
However, from Cameron's second main point, "can I be a model when I grow up?" explains that
becoming a model is like winning the lottery, very rare and hard to get. From the presenter's third
main point, "do they retouch all the photos?" explains that what everyone sees on TV, magazines, or
social media are not real and that they are all retouched. The fourth main point that Russell goes
over, "do you get free stuff?" talks about how being or looking a specific way has its advantages that
others would not get away with. The fifth and last main point, she goes over is "what is it like to be a
model?" She explains that being a model is not all fun and games and it have its ... Show more

Daytime Talk Television
Daytime talk television is certainly controversial. There are those who find these types of shows
informative and helpful. There are others who view these shows as pointless and inappropriate. I
agree with the latter. Daytime talk television is pointless and it presents material that should not
appear on television. I believe that some talk shows need to be removed from the airwaves and not
seen again.

I feel that daytime talk television is both a good thing and can also be negative in its attempts to
fight for ratings. Those shows that I believe should stay on television and continue to be run are the
positive ones that have a goal that is based on people as opposed to those based on money and
ratings. I believe Oprah is on of the only talk show hosts that does a good job in dealing with people
and their problems. As Merry Thomas said, "Oprah deals with topics that touch peoples hearts and
she wants and tried to help those in need." She does several shows that are aimed at inspiring and
helping her viewers. This idea of helping people can be seen through her show about family values.
Oprah had Louie Anderson on the set, and he was discussing how fame has put stress on his family
and the relationships within the family. Louie talked about how he tries to deal with his family and
their constant desire for financial support. His brother came on, and they discussed the problem in a
calm, relaxed way and how it has strained their relationship. Her kind of show is the kind we need
more of on television. It was nice to see two people discuss a problem as opposed to yelling and
fighting about it. I like her style and her love of people. I think that if a show is done in good taste

Talk Shows on Television
Television is one of the greatest inventions to ever be created, right? Lucian Dorneanu, an editor of
Softpedia, stated, "Wherever a television is on, it draws attention like no other piece electronic in the
house. It can be source of amusement, knowledge, or, misused, of violence and almost self–inflicted
psychiatric disorders." Today television is having a huge impact on people more than ever before, by
doing more harm than good. Television is supposed to be bringing entertainment and laughter to
every household, by showing a positive way of life. Although, over the years, talk shows became
one of the most watched on television. These talk shows are causing violence, teaching bad habits,
loosing family value.

Talk To A Woman Analysis
There is nothing that will take you further with women than good verbal game. All the money, cars,
and clothes in the world won't mean a thing if you can't effectively communicate your agenda to a
woman. Your mouthpiece can be a weapon or an aphrodisiac – it all depends on the situation. First
let's assume that you've gotten over being nervous about talking to women. If you have, then you're
halfway there.
The first thing to remember is that conversations can be very spontaneous. You won't always be the
one who initiates them, either. You will have instances when women will talk to you and you'll have
to be ready. Try to speak as clearly as possible and enunciate your words fully. Talk at a calm and
measured pace. If you're the one kicking things off, then most often it should start with a polite
greeting such as "hello" – that's right, a plain old "hello." Pickup lines are so passé and the last thing
you want is to appear to be contrived or rehearsed with your macking. You'll always want to steer
the conversation towards the woman because at the end of the day, they love to talk about
themselves. You'll appear to be interesting and you'll get some cursory information about them if ...

episode. If these are the things you choose to discourse a woman about, you'll get her very
comfortable – so damn comfortable that she'll think she's talking to one of her girlfriends. Avoid
subjects like this at all costs. Besides talking about her or her family you can discuss the
environment, animals, the economy, food, music, books, clothes, or exercise. Stay away from heavy

How to Talk to Girls at Parties by Neil Gaiman
In Neil Gaiman's short story, "How to Talk to Girls at Parties," Gaiman takes you on an out of the
world encounter that occurs to two young teenage boys. The story starts off with Enn and Vic, the
two young boys, who are trying to find a party by Croydon station. Vic is anxious to go to the party
to meet some girls while Enn is more shy and apprehensive about talking to girls. When they finally
find the party Vic goes off to mingle with a girl named Stella and Enn meets some very unique girls
who tell him stories about traveling the universe and swimming in the sun. Enn starts to get friendly
with one of the girls and right when he's about kiss her Vic comes running to Enn saying that they
need to go right now. When they finally get outside Enn sees that Vic is crying and scared out of his
mind, but he never tells Enn what happened, but it is implied that the girls were aliens. The theme of
this story would be that maybe guys and girls really are from different worlds. Gaiman develops his
theme by using setting, point of view, irony, and dialogue. The story is told by Enn, the young boy
who is reluctant to go to the party because he's not really good at talking to girls. Because Enn is
telling the story from his point of view we are able to understand very quickly that Vic is clearly the
ladies' man and that Enn is not. This puts Vic almost in a higher and more dominant position than
Enn. The way that Enn talks about girls makes it very noticeable that he has almost no

Personal Reflection
As I reread every piece of literature we have gone over, Connecticut, pine trees in back was the
piece that I believed had a tone and genre that I could replicate into my own words. I felt that piece
was the best way for me to connect with my past and truly talk about it with reflection as a maturing
adult. This style of writing allowed me to open up about many of the events in my past and truly
speak out in ways that I would never even think about doing. Having a very accepting environment
in class with close to no judgement also helped me know that my expressions and truths will go as
serious matters instead of ways to critique my past. Connecticut, pine trees in back was without a
doubt the best piece of literature for me to openly express my feelings about past impactful events.
As I began the introduction of my piece, I paused to think of a way to talk about my birth without
copying Dubois so I simply said, "On a normal February day" in order to create an original
introduction. I also included both my parents having me in order to give credit to all the hard work it

How to Talk So Teens Will Listen

Characteristics Of Everyday Talk
CHARACTERISTICS OF EVERYDAY TALK
There are many important and significant factors in a human being's life. Without those elements,
life stays incomplete. For instance, food, recreation, hobby, fun, and emotions are fundamentals of a
normal life. One of those elements is every day talk. Everyday talk is the process in which people
interact with each other and communicate their points of views (Tedpower, n.d.). This is a way for
them to stay in contact with each other. This is important because human beings cannot live alone.
They are social animals by the nature, which means at every point of their lives they need someone
to talk to or communicate. If a person stays alone for a long time, he starts being depressed and
frustrated which can lead to many odd behavioral traits. People who talk to each other or have a
decent conversation with each other can be friends, family, colleagues, siblings, sub–ordinates,
employers, or strangers.
A lot of research has been done on this topic. Many linguistics have surveyed on the social behavior
that people have to converse with each other who include Biber and Carter and McCarthy.
According to them, there are many characteristics of every day talk. However, before discussing
those features, one thing needs to be kept in mind. Even if the situation or the environment calls for

Tricks For Cracking The Art Of Small Talk
Tricks for cracking the art of small talk
While small talk is an essential part of life, it is by no means easy. Even though you aren't sharing
deep thoughtful ideas, striking a conversation over nothing can actually be a lot harder. The good
news is that there are clever ways you can crack the art of small talk.
Be prepared
Just like many things in life, excelling at small talk is all about preparation. If you have some plan
and strategy to follow, you are more likely to feel more relaxed and give a better impression to the
other person.
Do some appropriate preparations depending on the situation where you are likely to have to do
small talk. For example, if you are going for a party, you'd want to think about your connection with
the host. This way, you can use it as an icebreaker when meeting new people – it's most likely a
topic you'll be asked about as well.
If you are going to an event, where you are likely to meet acquaintances you have met previously,
it's important to try remembering a few things about the person. For example, try to think whether
they had any children or their profession, so that you can impress them by asking a casual question
on these topics.
You should also think a list of subjects you'd like to talk about and think about these before small
talk situations. For example, try answering questions such as:
What are your hobbies?
What is your relation to the people at the event?
What you been travelling recently or participated in an

Selective Mutism is a changeable anxiety issue defined by a child 's lack of talk in different social
places, for example, school. These children can talk and communicate where they are friendly,
secure, and relaxed most of the times these students are very talkative at home but in the school they
don 't talk. I have seen a lot of students like that they are super shy in the school but when I have a
chance to visit their home they are very talkative. Also, I know some of these students are very
smart but they don 't respond to any question but when I checked their writing responses it is
perfect. I have seen different students like that some of them have genetic problems about anxiety.
Also, some of the kids have serious anger problems at home but in the school they are shy and
unresponsive to the environment. I have seen a lot of K–5 classrooms, and most of them are look
like a room of a house I think it will help to reduce anxiety. Unfortunately, it is hard to set up the
same environment in high school classes.
Classical condition is a term that used to describe what has been gained through experience. Parts of
a classical condition hypothesis are the unconditioned help. Unconditioned help is anything that can

One of today's curriculum and instructional trends is geared toward personalized learning. This trend
is called many different things: "individualized education plans", "out–comes based learning" and
"learning analytics" to name a few. Whatever term one uses, this educational trend has a profound
impact on learners, teachers, curriculum and spiritual growth.
Perhaps this philosophy of personalized learning can be traced back to Plato and Rousseau; John
Dewey however, further expanded on their philosophies. In his book, Schools of To–Morrow,
Dewey quotes Mrs. Johnson, a teacher, as stating, "We must wait for the desire of the child...then
supply the means to satisfy the child's desire."(Dewey 1915, 21) Dewey believed as Plato and

absolutes and memorization to self–realization techniques with the mentality that it will be learned
when the learner is ready. History may or may not be taught as it is not deemed necessary since it is
not tested. Science is pushed heavily since it can be experience by the learners. Phonics is not a
focus since it is rote memorization. Again with the mentality that the learner will learn to read when
he is ready. In the Humanist Manifesto, which Dewey signed, he states: "There is no room for fixed,
natural law or permanent absolutes... teaching children to read is a great perversion... the child does
not go to school to develop individual talents but rather are prepared as "units" in an organic society

Example Of A Talk Show
Defining what talk shows are can be a very challenging task. The OED defines the talk show as
following:
"A chat show, especially one in which listeners, viewers, or the studio audience are invited to
participate in the discussion." (OED)
However, talk shows have become very popular in recent times and represent a rapidly changing
hybrid media phenomena. According to Ilie, "they display intertextuality through overlaps with
other mediatized forms of talk, and they endlessly reconstruct themselves by violating and
transgressing their own discursive conventions." (2006:489). Talk shows do not represent only one
form of communication and social behavior, but they use different ways to converse and interview
their guests. More than one type of discourse is used within talk shows. Many talk shows combine
different discourses such as the discourses used in debates, game shows, debates, interviews and
quiz shows (cf. Ilie, 2006:489). It is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Ted talks I decided to analyze for this assignment all focused on environmentally friendly ways
to build or enhance existing structures. I watched several Ted talks, but decided to focus on
Greening the Ghetto, The Tradeoffs of Building Green, and Eco–Friendly Drywall because I liked
these 3 presentations the most. Building and it's effects on the environment is a topic I developed an
interest in as a child. I grew up the daughter of a soldier and therefore had opportunities to see parts
of the world and meet people living in them that an ordinary tourist would not. Even as a child it
was easy to connect the quality of environment to quality of health and living conditions. Healthy
environment generally equates to healthy, happy people. I have also had the opportunity to see how
pollution effects people, animals, land, and water in both urban and rural areas. All of these
presentations made good and effective use of still photography in their Ted Talks. Eco–Friendly

Mmmm, I groaned "5:50 is way too early for anyone to wake up" I thought as I rolled over to turn
off my alarm clock. I blindly slapped it, trying to find the off button, and turning on the radio in the
process. "Last night Bill Berton, former player for the Buffalo hockey team was announced dead in
a hotel suite." I gasped and sat right up, my eyes wide. Bill was my uncle. I have not seen him in a
long time, 3 years, I think, but now he's dead and I'll never see him again. The reporter continued.
"His wife found him hanging by a rope tied around his neck when she came out of the bathroom."
I sat there, more stunted than ever. I sat there my mind spinning.
"Come on, breakfast is ready, waffles won't stay warm forever." ... Show more content on

Where did that come from, I don't hate you?"
Another message popped up. "Petrel told me you hate me."
Petrel? I thought why would Petrel say that?
"Here, this is what Petrel sent me." Replied Kate, followed by by a long paragraph that said,
"Samantha, Morgan, and I are getting really sick of your recent change in attitude. All you do is talk
to your new friends and never talk to us any more, and we have decided that we are done with it and
none of us want to be friends with someone who doesn't pay attention to us.
I sat there in shock. Petrel was literally my best friend ever. She was that one friend that you relied
on more than your family, you could talk about anything with, and there were no secrets. It was true
that Kate was paying less attention to us and more to her new friends, but I was happy for her. I
couldn't believe that she would say something like that, I glanced back down at my screen. There
was a message from Petrel, this time saying " Hey! What's up?" with a smiley face emoji.
"Why did you tell Kate I hate her?" I responded.
I sat there staring at the screen, no response. Then finally she responded, "Oh"
"And..." I pressed.
"I needed an excuse"

The Effects Of Classroom Talk On The Classroom
In teaching, a large proportion of time is spent in talking and listening. As the major factor in a
classroom it should become the main process by which a pupil learns. After all it is the primary
method that humans use to communicate. It leads me to ask how important is it? And does what is
talked about in lessons equate to the quality of learning that is happening in the classroom. On the
basis of these questions, Daniels (2001 cited in Alexander, 2004:8) argues that classroom talk not
only mediates teaching and learning but the wider culture. Alexander (2004:9) also indicates that
talk is necessary for 'the building of the brain itself as a physical organism and thereby expanding its
power'.
Because talking is not recorded in a book unlike writing, teachers may tend to be less reflective on
what is said rather than what is written. For instance, Alexander (2004:6) points out that it is always
written work that is regarded as 'real school work and as the most reliable medium for measuring
pupil's learning'. Barnes (1992:124) also implies that learning is not simply adding bits of
information to the previous knowledge. Rather, most important learning is a matter of 'working on
understanding', which can be achieved through talk (ibid).
In an effort to reveal the importance of classroom talk in student learning and their interrelation, I
aim to discuss whether student learning is closely linked to the quality of classroom talk through the
foundation subjects of science

Oprah Winfrey, Famous Talk Show Host And Philanthropist,...

  • 1. Oprah Winfrey, famous talk show host and philanthropist,... Oprah Winfrey, famous talk show host and philanthropist, can be considered a hero by any standards. Her life is an almost perfect representation of the mythological hero archetype. Commonalities include; overcoming extreme obstacles through her rise from a rough childhood, early recognition of talents in her career and an accomplishment of great deeds through her work as a philanthropist. Oprah is an inspiration to young women everywhere, proving that anything is possible. She will be remembered as a great social hero of our time. Oprah was born in a small, rural town in Mississippi to an unwed teenage mother. Even though her birth was not miraculous like that of other heros, she made up for it in her early years of life with an abundance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oprah focused on topics that mattered, like cancer, substance abuse, and other important social issues. Her empathetic interviewing style shaped journalism today. Before Oprah, journalists would never shed a tear or empathize with their interviewees. Today, this is a very common practice. One could say that Oprah's television show qualified as one of her "great deeds" as described in the hero archetype because of the social change it helped bring to the United States. Her early acceptance of the LGBT community alone helped turn the country in a different, more accepting direction. Oprah is now the most famous and wealthy african–american woman in the world. Her level of success and rise from hardships is truly unprecedented. Oprah Winfrey's heroism extends beyond her immensely successful career and into her personal endeavors as a highly regarded philanthropist. Her private charity donates millions of dollars to causes around the globe. It made accomplishments like helping to build schools in developing countries and supporting women's shelters. Oprah is also a big supporter of animal rights, winning the 2008 Person of the Year award from the animal rights group PETA. This could be considered a second great deed, or rather many great deeds, Oprah has performed. Her philanthropic work will benefit many generations to come, more directly from the billion dollars she has written in her will to be donated directly to charity. Oprah's life is that ... Her use of empathy in telling the audience her story of her first sight of starlight as well as using images intended to evoke emotion captivated her audience not only in the beginning but also throughout her talk. In her article "A Non Talk on Giving Talks" she stresses to not make wordy slides, for this causes the audience to choose between listening to the speaker and reading the slide. During her presentation, she did not use words but instead used images to keep the audience's attention while she spoke. Another rule she stressed in her article was to not use flashy slides or lots of animations. None of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Talk Shows: Jerry Spring And Dr. Phil In the world of television shows and entertainment today, talk shows have been the most entertaining and hyped television program in the world. As any human being, they crave to be a part of a drama, this gives the exciting life many people are obsessed with. As a talk show gives many advice and opinions, they mainly focus on the gossip and mistakes of celebrities and people in general. So it doesn't matter where, when, or who is hosting a talk show, they all have the standard norm of showing negative scenarios or talk about celebrities and even family social problems. For instance, there would be more of a comical tone of a talk show like Ellen, which give more than gossip, but gives singers, dancers, and like "Damn Daniel" a change of fame. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With so many talk shows in the world and in America, it has brought millions of fans to listen and take in the drama. This has led to how popular a television talk show could get and with more gossip and drama, it brings more and more of the audience closer. Two of the most comparable and contrastable talk shows are Jerry Spring and Dr. Phil, this became an easy choice because of how extremely different they are but how they can still be similar. They both are comparable when drama is brought into their shows and how they are actually hand, weather its right or wrong. Both shows are similar also because of how they both enjoy the stirring of drama that is on their shows and how much fans they are receiving. They both also offer a solution to the issues that gives the people a change to either fix it or leave it. In be a contrastable show, they both are extremely different from each other. The Culture of Talk Shows Essay The Culture of Talk Shows If social order is not a given, if it is not encoded in our DNA, then to some extent we are always in the process of producing "virtual realities," some more functional than others. Habits, routines, and institutions are the patterns that create the "world taken for granted." Knowledge of how to behave is contained in cultural scripts that are themselves products of human interaction and communication about the nature of "reality." Shame, guilt, embarrassment are controlling feelings that arise from "speaking the unspeakable" and from violating cultural taboos. Rather than being mortified, ashamed, or trying to hide their stigma, "guests" willingly and eagerly discuss their child molesting, sexual quirks, and criminal records in an effort to seek "understanding" for their particular disease. Yet these people remain caricatures, plucked out of the context of their real lives, unimportant except for their entertaining problem. (In real life someone might question the benefits of publicly confessing to people who really don't care about you or don't have the expertise to give advice. Exploitation, voyeurism, peeping Toms, freak shows all come to mind.) The central distortion that these shows propound is that they give useful therapy to guests and useful advice to the audience. And that they are not primarily designed to extract the most riveting and most entertaining emotional displays from participants. This leads to such self–serving and silly speeches by hosts as: "I ask this question not to pry in your business but to educate parents in our audience" (Oprah, trying to get graphic details from a female guest who claims to have been sodomized by her father) and "Do I understand, Lisa, that intercourse began with your dad at age 12, and oral sex between 5 and 12? • 17. Raymond Carver What We Talk About When We Talk About Love... In the short story "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" by Raymond Carver, tells of how two couples gather around a kitchen table drinking gin and talking about love. For some odd reason, no one knows what love is. One character in the story, Mel says it is "spiritual" or "absolute", trying to perceive what it truly is. The characters talk and tell stories about their own experiences in what it meant to them. The only problem was that no one could tell wrong from right on what love meant. Towards the end of the story, after a couple rounds of gin, both couples sat in darkness and silence, completely motionless as if they were stuck in a daze. This puzzles the couples for some time to question their own love towards one another in their life. The true meaning of love is still unknown. In order for the reader to have a proper understanding of the story, they must bear in mind that the "presence of light" shows a personified attribute to love being in the room with them and to acknowledge the dark awakening at the end of the story. As mentioned before, Carver uses a "dark" ending to kind of toy with the reader's mind that the characters knew what love is and let alone; have it towards one another. This makes the reader question Carver's ending about the characters as to why they are sitting in complete silence and motionless. While reading the story the reader can see that the characters are intoxicated, discussing love as if they couldn't tell who or what it is. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Talk Argument In the advertisement, "The Talk", Procter and Gamble's goal was to spark a conversation over this heavily heated topic and gain supporters due to their perspective. They do this by using the rhetorical mode of pathos to connect emotionally to all mothers. One of the hardest things for most mothers, especially my own mother, is to see children being hurt either by physical or verbal violence. Procter and Gamble use this to their advantage by showing racism taken by children at different ages in life. This may lead not just African–American mothers but American mothers to be saddened by this advertisement and see how hard it can be for the African–American race. This, as explained by the spokesman for Procter and Gamble, is the company's main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With such things as police brutality and racism on the rise, African–American mothers may have believed that there was no hope. Their children were never going to live in a society where they were fully accepted. Just a month before the commercial came out, President Trump endorsed the idea of police brutality, "Like, don't hit their head, and they just killed somebody – don't hit their head," "I said, you can take the hand away, okay? When you guys put somebody in the car and you're protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over (The Washington Post?")The idea that some of our society, especially the President Of The United States, still believes in this is a good reason for African–American mothers to be scared to death for their children. This is why the Talk is supposedly so common. P and G also spoke out saying that this is not an unusual occurrence in our world, "It's unfortunate that in the current environment everything becomes politicized, because the talk between a mother and daughter isn't politicized at all; it is just reality. It would be great if we lived in a society where we didn't need the talk (The Washington Post.") • 25. 'Foreigner-Talk' Foreigner Talk, Interlanguage Talk? "Foreigner–Talk", "Teacher–talk", "Interlanguage Talk". According to Krashen (1982), Foreigner– talk develops when adjustments are made to the language to ensure non–native or proficient speaker comprehension and it is also referred to Teacher–talk in the classroom. This is based on the evidence that if "motherese" or "caretaker speech" is effective with children's L1 acquisition, it would stand to reason that similar speech methods would help L2 acquisition. "Foreigner talk" is used by native speakers to communicate with non–native speakers, whereas as, "teacher talk" is used in L2 classroom by the teacher and finally "Interlanguage Talk" focuses on simple input used for real authentic communication. White (1987) goes onto argue that learners are at a disadvantage as they do not acquire the crucial complexities of the language when spoken to in caretaker speech. Language Devices Used In 'Girl Talk And Boy Talk' For this project I recorded a 30 minutes conversation between two couples (two males and two females) dining at a restaurant after the movies. The first couple is Stephen (22) and Lina (21), and the second couple is Daniel (24) and Chue (21). Stephen and Daniel are brothers while Lina and Chue are co–workers. With this, there is at least a comfortable level. Stephen and Lina sat next to each other which is also across from Daniel and Chue. For this recording, I observed four different language device used: I'm sorry, I'm not apologizing (Tannen), Women's language: powerless language (Lakoff), Relationship miscommunication (Tannen), and lastly "Informal talk: Girl talk and boy talk (Eisikovitis)." Two of the language device used in this conversation is the "I'm sorry, I'm not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the storytelling, there was a lot of 'so' used, a lot of "not apologizing" and less of "I'm sorry." At one point, Stephen told a time where Lina and him got into arguments and when Lina gots frustrated she used a lot of curse words (which seem like girls are more likely to curse). Stephen mentioned that Lina did say sorry but after when they reconciled. As Stephen told this memory, Lina interrupted and apologize again, but more in a jokingly way than in a serious way. This interruption was quite powerful as Lina take on and finish the sentence for Stephen (Lakoff). It addition, it seems like the words "sorry" has become a habit or is ritual for Lina. However, this put them at a balanced– position because Lina admit to her fault and Stephen received the apology (both share the blame). I think I succeeded in informing my audience, but definitely could have improved the interest factor of my video. My introduction is a simple title animation going into my presentation, and my introduction is a very basic overview of what my presentation will be covering. Looking back on the example given and at other students' videos, I realize some music and a hook could have been very helpful. A hook is especially important because it gets the audience excited for what's coming, and I notice now that my opening lines are pretty tame. Of course, I find it interesting, but my audience has not seen the video, so they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So, I used some funny images and some informative ones, and I'm not sure if that was the best choice. Perhaps higher quality images that backed up my points, even if there were fewer of them, would have been the better choice. I think my visual aids complimented my audio component, but they could have been more in depth representations of my talking points as a whole. Finally, it comes to my oral presentation skills. I would say I have average ability to communicate orally, which I hoped to improve by splitting up my speech into different sections. I recorded each of these separately, sometimes recording seven or eight takes, for the sake of cutting out most stumbles and producing the best quality video I could. However, I think I still could have improved. There a few mistakes which I left in, and could have redone if I'd had better time management skills. I was unsure about how expressive to be, as my video was half me talking and half narration. I tried to be reserved and easy to understand, but I think going bigger and being more animated would have helped keep my video interesting and fun to watch. Speakers need to be careful about their information but it is inevitable to make mistakes. From the audience view, what is the best reaction when you hear something wrong in the lecture? Some people break the lecture and point the mistake instantly some other wait until all audience gone and then discuss with the lecturer. In my view is not effective to break the talk and point the incorrect thing because it can be not important or you might be wrong. To begin it is worth mentioning that the mistake might be not important. It might not have a close relation with the context and breaking the talk and asking about the rightness of that might be waste of the time. For instance, there was a conference in our university about Green Energy. The lecturer had a mistake about the type of their servers they use to estimate wasted energy. it is obvious that the type of server was not closely related to ... This can be solved easily after the lecture when all the audience is gone. If all the listeners break the talk because of a wrong matter it could destroy the talk. On the other hand, if you present your thought after the lecture, the talk would coherent without disruption. There are several reasons preventing you to disturb a talk but because of the dearth of time, we only mentioned these two. In conclusion I think that the coherent and continuous lecture is far better than a disrupted one. Letting a Lecture to continue without disturbance is also respect to the speaker and all ... Chicago," a half–hour morning talk show that was suffering from perennially poor ratings. It was the beginning of big things for Winfrey. "My first day in Chicago, September 4, 1983. I set foot in this city, and just walking down the street, it was like roots, like the motherland. I knew I belonged here," she would later say. Winfrey was an instant success as a talk show host. In a few short months after taking over, her show surpassed then–reigning talk–show king "Donahue" to become the top–rated talk show in Chicago. Other Chicago luminaries noticed the rising star in their midst, including nationally renowned film critic Roger Ebert, who helped Winfrey land her first deal to host a nationally syndicated talk show. With the ink dry on September 's syndication deal, Winfrey's show was broadcast nationwide, expanded to a full hour and renamed "The Oprah Winfrey Show." At the same time, Winfrey founded Harpo Productions ("Harpo" is "Oprah" spelled backwards), which would later branch out to include Harpo Radio, Harpo Print and Harpo Films. Now a national program, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" again trounced "Donahue," bringing in twice the national audience of her talk show rival. To better capitalize on that success, Harpo Productions assumed complete ownership and total production responsibilities for "The Oprah Winfrey Show" from Capitol Cities/ABC. With the advent of television, many programs have been aired ranging from news programs to sitcoms and from game shows to talk shows, but talk shows, today, have the most effect on the public. Daily, viewers turn on their televisions and many are bombarded with images of sex, drugs, and violence on the talk shows. As children, they are in the stage of life when they are learning the most and absorbing everything they see, and it is natural for most of them to repeat what they see. Adolescent years are very crucial for learning how to behave and learning right from wrong, but talk shows are destroying children's morals and their outlook on society. Therefore, there is no doubt that they are having a negative effect on our future, the children. In addition to affecting children, talk shows are affecting adults as well. Adults are observing these programs as much as children are, if not more. Our society is continually affected by what is seen, and consequently, there have even been cases of violence as a result of watching one of these talk shows. For instance, in 2000, a man by the name of Jonathan Schmitz murdered a gay man, Scott Amedure, after watching an episode of Jenny Jones in which Amedure admitted that Schmitz was his secret crush according to Ellen Willis (34). Most likely, that tragedy would not have occurred had it not been for a talk show like Jenny Jones that presents immoral topics for millions of viewers to see. This just further proves that talk shows have a negative effect on their viewers. Moreover, the viewers of the talk shows are not only affected that way, but some may also relate to the talk shows and in effect, "they believe there is a direct connection between the fictional world young people are ... The code of the west is things to live by, they were never actually written down, but they were something that everyone in the west seemed to live by. Like the soap opera, the talk show is an invention of twentieth century broadcasting. It takes a very old form of communication, conversation, and transforms it into a low cost but highly popular form of information and entertainment through the institutions, practices and technologies of television. The talk show did not originate over night, at one time, or in one place. It developed out of forty years of television practice and antecedent talk traditions from radio, Chatauqua, vaudeville and popular theater. Successful talk show hosts like Mike Wallace, Johnny Carson, and Barbara Walters bridge generations of viewers. The longevity of these "super stars" increases their impact on the forms and formats of television talk with which they are associated. Television talk shows originally emerged out of two central traditions: news and entertainment. Over time hybrid forms developed that mixed news, public affairs, and entertainment. These hybrid forms occupy a middle ground position between news and entertainment, though their hosts (Phil Donahue, Oprah Winfrey, and Geraldo Rivera, for example) often got their training in journalism. Approximately a third of the major talk show hosts listed at the end of the essay came out of news. The other two thirds came from entertainment (comedy in particular). Within the journalistic tradition, the names Edward R. Murrow, Mike Wallace, Ted Koppel and Bill Moyers stand out. News talk hosts like Murrow, Koppel, and Moyers do not have bands, sidekicks, or a studio audience. Their roles as talk show hosts are extensions of their roles as reporters and news commentators. • 81. Book Talk : A Reflection On Book Talk Reflection on Book Talk Scientifically, there are 7.2 billion people in the world. If everyone had five minutes to share their life story, it would roughly take around 71,000 years to hear them all. Even though this time does not exist, there is still the power to hear the stories of as many people that we can, because hearing "stories make us more alive, more human, more courageous, more loving"– Madeleine L'Engle. The overall idea of this book seems extremely powerful and interesting. Out of the stories that were told, there were two that stood out to me, the story about the woman with the man at the bakery shop as well as the the story of the man who was stuck in the mining shack. First and foremost, the story of the girl that had the encounter with the man at the bakery shop was extremely interesting to me. Before coming to this book talk, I was giving myself self pity for having to take a test later that night, but after hearing this story I realized that there are far worse situations. I always new that other people had had rougher lives, but it always gets put in the back of my mind. I think it is always important for these life stories to be presented over and over to be placed not in the back of our minds but right in the front. There are many women that are put in this position of having no family because of similar situations, but many seem to nod it off and say, "well that's life". When these situations are placed right in front of us, are we are connected to the characters/people, we feel more moved to make changes. If nothing else sharing stories similar to this will empower these women and make them feel heard. This story for me, overall, brought a good perspective into my life. The second story that made me think deeply was the story of the man that was stuck in the mining shaft. The idea that the only reason why they were saved was because of some governor trying to be elected made my heart cry. The idea that some people rank themselves so much higher than the others around them is saddening and ludacris. I think that this short story can have so much effect and so much power in the world because I feel like many people again get stuck in their own world and forget that such situations are ... The Ellen Degeneres show is a contemporary talk show which although does include therapeutic narratives of disadvantaged individuals including Ellen's own struggle with discrimination, is mainly comprised of the disclosing of intimate details of celebrity lives. Although it may be difficult, discussing traumatic experiences in a narrative format allows individuals to understand the causes and ramifications of their experiences and consequently begin to overcome the trauma they have undergone (Pennebaker, 2000). Ellen, herself, shares her experiences of being discriminated against due to her sexual orientation and how she has struggled with facing both her friends and family, and the critical public following the revelation of her sexuality. Ellen's own interview with Oprah Winfrey shortly after her coming out exemplifies the benefits of talk shows which follow a therapeutic narrative structure as Oprah facilitates Ellen's discussion of her sexuality and Ellen claims that she feels liberated as she is able to be "completely honest" and shares her story in order to "inspire others and let them know that it's ok to be gay" (Lolluzza91, 2013). However, Ellen does not assist in the restorative process an individual undergoes on her own talk show through adopting a therapeutic narrative format but rather attempts to support individuals through providing financial aid. Hence, although Ellen may encourage individuals to come out and share their experiences of discrimination, she does not provide them with a sense of how to deal with their situation or obtain closure, but instead rewards them for what she considers their 'bravery'. As Merry Thomas said, "Oprah deals with topics that touch peoples hearts and she wants and tried to help those in need." She does several shows that are aimed at inspiring and helping her viewers. This idea of helping people can be seen through her show about family values. Oprah had Louie Anderson on the set, and he was discussing how fame has put stress on his family and the relationships within the family. Louie talked about how he tries to deal with his family and their constant desire for financial support. His brother came on, and they discussed the problem in a calm, relaxed way and how it has strained their relationship. Her kind of show is the kind we need more of on television. It was nice to see two people discuss a problem as opposed to yelling and fighting about it. I like her style and her love of people. I think that if a show is done in good taste and deals with ... • 101. Talk Shows on Television Television is one of the greatest inventions to ever be created, right? Lucian Dorneanu, an editor of Softpedia, stated, "Wherever a television is on, it draws attention like no other piece electronic in the house. It can be source of amusement, knowledge, or, misused, of violence and almost self–inflicted psychiatric disorders." Today television is having a huge impact on people more than ever before, by doing more harm than good. Television is supposed to be bringing entertainment and laughter to every household, by showing a positive way of life. Although, over the years, talk shows became one of the most watched on television. These talk shows are causing violence, teaching bad habits, loosing family value. Turn the television on in the afternoon and there will be one show you will not be able to pass up "The Jerry Springer Show". Jerr–y! Jerr–y! Jerr–y! Jerr–y! The annoying "Jerr–y" chant that everyone knows. The women are going crazy for the Jerry beads makes it irresistible on changing the channel to another channel. This popular television show The Jerry Springer Show is considered a "Trashy Talk Show" that attracts its audience by violence, strong language, and its sexual content. The talk show beeps the strong languages used and blurs the entire sexual content out, but it is still clear what is going on. The beginning of "The Jerry Springer Show" contains a warning to parents that the program may not be suitable for children. The first thing that stands out is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 105. Talk To A Woman Analysis There is nothing that will take you further with women than good verbal game. All the money, cars, and clothes in the world won't mean a thing if you can't effectively communicate your agenda to a woman. Your mouthpiece can be a weapon or an aphrodisiac – it all depends on the situation. First let's assume that you've gotten over being nervous about talking to women. If you have, then you're halfway there. The first thing to remember is that conversations can be very spontaneous. You won't always be the one who initiates them, either. You will have instances when women will talk to you and you'll have to be ready. Try to speak as clearly as possible and enunciate your words fully. Talk at a calm and measured pace. If you're the one kicking things off, then most often it should start with a polite greeting such as "hello" – that's right, a plain old "hello." Pickup lines are so passé and the last thing you want is to appear to be contrived or rehearsed with your macking. You'll always want to steer the conversation towards the woman because at the end of the day, they love to talk about themselves. You'll appear to be interesting and you'll get some cursory information about them if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This will make you look rather effeminate. If these are the things you choose to discourse a woman about, you'll get her very comfortable – so damn comfortable that she'll think she's talking to one of her girlfriends. • 109. How to Talk to Girls at Parties by Neil Gaiman In Neil Gaiman's short story, "How to Talk to Girls at Parties," Gaiman takes you on an out of the world encounter that occurs to two young teenage boys. The story starts off with Enn and Vic, the two young boys, who are trying to find a party by Croydon station. Vic is anxious to go to the party to meet some girls while Enn is more shy and apprehensive about talking to girls. When they finally find the party Vic goes off to mingle with a girl named Stella and Enn meets some very unique girls who tell him stories about traveling the universe and swimming in the sun. Enn starts to get friendly with one of the girls and right when he's about kiss her Vic comes running to Enn saying that they need to go right now. When they finally get outside Enn sees that Vic is crying and scared out of his mind, but he never tells Enn what happened, but it is implied that the girls were aliens. The theme of this story would be that maybe guys and girls really are from different worlds. Gaiman develops his theme by using setting, point of view, irony, and dialogue. The story is told by Enn, the young boy who is reluctant to go to the party because he's not really good at talking to girls. Because Enn is telling the story from his point of view we are able to understand very quickly that Vic is clearly the ladies' man and that Enn is not. This puts Vic almost in a higher and more dominant position than Enn. The way that Enn talks about girls makes it very noticeable that he has almost no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Personal Reflection As I reread every piece of literature we have gone over, Connecticut, pine trees in back was the piece that I believed had a tone and genre that I could replicate into my own words. I felt that piece was the best way for me to connect with my past and truly talk about it with reflection as a maturing adult. This style of writing allowed me to open up about many of the events in my past and truly speak out in ways that I would never even think about doing. Having a very accepting environment in class with close to no judgement also helped me know that my expressions and truths will go as serious matters instead of ways to critique my past. Connecticut, pine trees in back was without a doubt the best piece of literature for me to openly express my feelings about past impactful events. As I began the introduction of my piece, I paused to think of a way to talk about my birth without copying Dubois so I simply said, "On a normal February day" in order to create an original introduction. I also included both my parents having me in order to give credit to all the hard work it takes to raise a child before and after birth. Like most people, my paragraph containing the very beginning of my is solely based on what I've been told by family and friends due to the fact that humans can't retain any memories within the first couple of years in their lives. • 121. Characteristics Of Everyday Talk CHARACTERISTICS OF EVERYDAY TALK There are many important and significant factors in a human being's life. Without those elements, life stays incomplete. For instance, food, recreation, hobby, fun, and emotions are fundamentals of a normal life. One of those elements is every day talk. Everyday talk is the process in which people interact with each other and communicate their points of views (Tedpower, n.d.). This is a way for them to stay in contact with each other. This is important because human beings cannot live alone. They are social animals by the nature, which means at every point of their lives they need someone to talk to or communicate. If a person stays alone for a long time, he starts being depressed and frustrated which can lead to many odd behavioral traits. People who talk to each other or have a decent conversation with each other can be friends, family, colleagues, siblings, sub–ordinates, employers, or strangers. A lot of research has been done on this topic. Many linguistics have surveyed on the social behavior that people have to converse with each other who include Biber and Carter and McCarthy. Even though you aren't sharing deep thoughtful ideas, striking a conversation over nothing can actually be a lot harder. The good news is that there are clever ways you can crack the art of small talk. Be prepared Just like many things in life, excelling at small talk is all about preparation. If you have some plan and strategy to follow, you are more likely to feel more relaxed and give a better impression to the other person. Do some appropriate preparations depending on the situation where you are likely to have to do small talk. For example, if you are going for a party, you'd want to think about your connection with the host. This way, you can use it as an icebreaker when meeting new people – it's most likely a topic you'll be asked about as well. If you are going to an event, where you are likely to meet acquaintances you have met previously, it's important to try remembering a few things about the person. For example, try to think whether they had any children or their profession, so that you can impress them by asking a casual question on these topics. You should also think a list of subjects you'd like to talk about and think about these before small talk situations. For example, try answering questions such as: What are your hobbies? What is your relation to the people at the event? What you been travelling recently or participated in an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Selective Mutism is a changeable anxiety issue defined by a child 's lack of talk in different social places, for example, school. These children can talk and communicate where they are friendly, secure, and relaxed most of the times these students are very talkative at home but in the school they don 't talk. I have seen a lot of students like that they are super shy in the school but when I have a chance to visit their home they are very talkative. Also, I know some of these students are very smart but they don 't respond to any question but when I checked their writing responses it is perfect. I have seen different students like that some of them have genetic problems about anxiety. Also, some of the kids have serious anger problems at home but in the school they are shy and unresponsive to the environment. I have seen a lot of K–5 classrooms, and most of them are look like a room of a house I think it will help to reduce anxiety. Unfortunately, it is hard to set up the same environment in high school classes. Classical condition is a term that used to describe what has been gained through experience. This trend is called many different things: "individualized education plans", "out–comes based learning" and "learning analytics" to name a few. Whatever term one uses, this educational trend has a profound impact on learners, teachers, curriculum and spiritual growth. Perhaps this philosophy of personalized learning can be traced back to Plato and Rousseau; John Dewey however, further expanded on their philosophies. In his book, Schools of To–Morrow, Dewey quotes Mrs. Johnson, a teacher, as stating, "We must wait for the desire of the child...then supply the means to satisfy the child's desire."(Dewey 1915, 21) Dewey believed as Plato and Rousseau, ... Phonics is not a focus since it is rote memorization. Again with the mentality that the learner will learn to read when he is ready. In the Humanist Manifesto, which Dewey signed, he states: "There is no room for fixed, natural law or permanent absolutes... teaching children to read is a great perversion... the child does not go to school to develop individual talents but rather are prepared as "units" in an organic society ... The OED defines the talk show as following: "A chat show, especially one in which listeners, viewers, or the studio audience are invited to participate in the discussion." (OED) However, talk shows have become very popular in recent times and represent a rapidly changing hybrid media phenomena. According to Ilie, "they display intertextuality through overlaps with other mediatized forms of talk, and they endlessly reconstruct themselves by violating and transgressing their own discursive conventions." (2006:489). Talk shows do not represent only one form of communication and social behavior, but they use different ways to converse and interview their guests. I watched several Ted talks, but decided to focus on Greening the Ghetto, The Tradeoffs of Building Green, and Eco–Friendly Drywall because I liked these 3 presentations the most. Building and it's effects on the environment is a topic I developed an interest in as a child. I grew up the daughter of a soldier and therefore had opportunities to see parts of the world and meet people living in them that an ordinary tourist would not. Even as a child it was easy to connect the quality of environment to quality of health and living conditions. Healthy environment generally equates to healthy, happy people. I have also had the opportunity to see how pollution effects people, animals, land, and water in both urban and rural areas. • 153. The Effects Of Classroom Talk On The Classroom In teaching, a large proportion of time is spent in talking and listening. As the major factor in a classroom it should become the main process by which a pupil learns. After all it is the primary method that humans use to communicate. It leads me to ask how important is it? And does what is talked about in lessons equate to the quality of learning that is happening in the classroom. On the basis of these questions, Daniels (2001 cited in Alexander, 2004:8) argues that classroom talk not only mediates teaching and learning but the wider culture. Alexander (2004:9) also indicates that talk is necessary for 'the building of the brain itself as a physical organism and thereby expanding its power'. Because talking is not recorded in a book unlike writing, teachers may tend to be less reflective on what is said rather than what is written. For instance, Alexander (2004:6) points out that it is always written work that is regarded as 'real school work and as the most reliable medium for measuring pupil's learning'. Barnes (1992:124) also implies that learning is not simply adding bits of information to the previous knowledge. Rather, most important learning is a matter of 'working on understanding', which can be achieved through talk (ibid). In an effort to reveal the importance of classroom talk in student learning and their interrelation, I aim to discuss whether student learning is closely linked to the quality of classroom talk through the foundation subjects of science ...
