Attachment Theory On The Relationships Between Parents And...
Attachment theory concentrates on the relationships between parents and children or parents and
primary caregivers. According John Bowlby, the author of attachment theory, attachment is inborn
and is as essential for survival as food, water, and air; it is an emotional, object specific relationship
that develops towards a primary caregiver (Bowlby, 1969). Through series of experiments Bowlby
explained the nature and the role of physical proximity of a child to a caregiver as a secure base for
exploration of the world (Bowlby, 1969). He concluded that it is essential for a child's healthy
development to have at least one caregiver who takes on a role of that secure base, which Bowlby
also referred to as secure haven (Bowlby, 1969). Bowlby identified three main stages of the
development of an attachment. During each of the stages a child exhibits different types of
proximity–seeking behaviors (Bowlby, 1969). In turn, a parent responds to those behaviors and the
quality of those responses contribute into the development of internal working models in a child
(Bowlby, 1969). As defined by Bowlby (1969), internal working model is a dynamic process that
enables a child to predict parental responses in times of distress. The critical period for developing
internal working models is between 6 months and 2 years of old (Bowlby, 1969). Bowlby proposed
that if during this critical period a parent was responsive to the child's needs and provided a secure
base for a child, the child would

Research Paper On The Gospel Of John
The Gospel of John
The genius of the Apostle John resides in his ability to penetrate to the theological foundations that
undergird the events of Jesus' life. He reaches to the deeper baptism and the calling of the Twelve
are doubtless presupposed, they are not actually described. Even themes central to the Synoptics
have almost disappeared: in particular, the kingdom of God or the kingdom of heaven, so much a
part of the preaching of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels and the central theme of His narrative
parables, is scarcely mentioned as such (cf. 3:3, 5; 18:36). meaning of the events, to the
relationships of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the work of redemption, and to the
Trinitarian love for humanity which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are fewer brief, pithy utterances, but more discourses; but even here some major discourses
found in the Synoptics (e.g. the Olivet Discourse) are not found in John. Although Jesus'.Page 2
Introduction
Second, John includes a fair amount of material of which the Synoptists make no mention. All of the
material in John chapters 2 thru 4, for instance, including His miraculous transformation of water
into wine, His dialogue with Nicodemus and His ministry in Samaria, find no Synoptic counterpart.
Further, the resurrection of
Lazarus, Jesus' frequent visits to Jerusalem, and His extended dialogues or dis–courses in the
Temple and in various synagogues, not to mention much of His private instruction to His disciples,
are all exclusive to the Fourth Gospel.
No less striking are the forcefully presented themes that dominate John but that are largely absent
from the Synoptics. Only in John is Jesus explicitly identified with
God (1:1, 18; 20:28). Here, too, Jesus makes a series of important "I am" statements which are
qualified: I am the light of the world, the resurrection and the life, the good shepherd, the vine, the
living water, the way, the truth and the life. These culminate in a series of absolute (unqualified) "I
AM" statements that are redolent of God
Himself (cf. 6:20; 8:24, 28, 58).

The Best Theology Would Need No Advocates
Karl Barth once stated, "The best theology would need no advocates; it will prove itself." Karl Barth
can be characterized as one of the greatest influential protestant theologians of the twentieth century.
Barth shed new light on Protestant theology and fundamentally reshaped it, facing numerous
altercations and challenges along the way. However, Barth's past was preeminent, as it acted as a
foundation for his impending theological methods to come. Karl Barth was born on May 10th, 1886
in Basel Switzerland. Barth was the son of Fritz Barth, and Anna Katharina Barth. Barth spent a
majority of his childhood in Bern Switzerland and was pursued by his four sibling. In Bern, Barth's
father was selected for the position as an educator of the New testament and early Christian church.
From 1904 to 1909 Barth attended some of the most prestigious institutions such as Bern, Tubingen,
Berlin and Marburg. It was at Berlin in which Barth studied liberal theologian Adolf con Harnack
and also became heavily influenced by Wilhelm Hermann and Freidrich Schleiermacher in his time
at Marburg as well. It was then that Barth became profoundly enticed in the nature of the scientific
method. After carrying out time in Geneva, Barth soon was chosen to serve at a parish in Safenwil,
Switzerland. Shortly after in 1913 he marries a brilliant violinist Nelly Hoffmann, and has a
daughter and four sons (The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica, 2007).

The Two Natures Of Jesus Christ
Before we discuss about the two natures of Christ, we should know the definition of nature itself.
Nature is the essential qualities of something that which make it what it is. All being in this world
has their own nature which usually a thing or a person only has one nature, for examples, a human
absolutely only has a human nature and the animal only has their animal natures, but Jesus Christ
has two natures at once in Himself which is the human nature and the divine nature. Jesus is the
second person of Trinity which is He is God that has the divine nature, but when He took a flesh and
being a human, He is also has the human nature. Jesus is 100% God and 100% human.
Karl Barth said that Jesus Christ is the "true man" which is visible and He is also the "true God"
which is invisible, He is both the God who has took a flesh to be a human who is exalted to God.

2. Finitum non capax infiniti
This concept is just like a bucket and the sea water. Even that is a big bucket it still cannot bear the
sea water, because the sea water is infinity while the bucket is finite. The bucket can only bear a
bucket of the sea water, not all of the sea water. Finitum non capax infiniti means, the finite and
itself cannot bear or receive the infinite. Andrew M. McGinnis said that when the reformed appealed
to this principle, it is closely connected to the extra Calvinisticum, this principle was a feature of
Reformed Christology that expressed the finitude of Christ's manhood "and therefore its incapacity
for receiving divine attributes, such as omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresent" (McGinnis,
2014). The human nature which is finite, cannot bear the divine nature which is infinite.
There are four implications of this principles which

Essay about The Importance of Attachment for the...
Attachment theory is the idea that a child needs to form a close relationship with at least one
primary caregiver. The theory proved that attachment is necessary to ensure successful social and
emotional development in an infant. It is critical for this to occur in the child's early infant years.
However, failed to prove that this nurturing can only be given by a mother (Birns, 1999, p. 13).
Many aspects of this theory grew out of psychoanalyst, John Bowlby's research. There are several
other factors that needed to be taken into account before the social worker reached a conclusion;
such as issues surrounding poverty, social class and temperament. These factors, as well as an
explanation of insecure attachment will be further explored in ... Show more content on

This type of attachment is relatively uncommon, found in only 10% of children (Golde, 2014). High
levels of distress upon separation often signify that the bond between an adult and infant is lacking
in certain areas. The mother is seen by the social worker to be failing to respond to the toddler's
needs; resulting in the toddler becoming highly distressed. Through this view, it is evident that the
social worker had good reason to question the toddler's attachment with his mother. However, there
are several other factors outside of the mother's control that could be influencing the toddler's
development that needs to be considered.
Firstly, issues surrounding poverty and social class. A study conducted by Everett Waters in 1978
found that out of the 50 middle–class children that were observed, 48 maintained their attachment
from 12 to 18 months (Birns, 1999, p. 14). A further study conducted by Vaughn et al in 1979 using
the 'Strange Situation' method and questionnaires. Found that through the 100 under–privileged
mothers and infants surveyed, the change of attachment classification was directly linked to the
mothers' stress; the extent of the stress experienced by the mother's impacted on the infant's
attachment (Birns, 1999, p. 15). Along the same lines, studies conducted by AECOM found that
disadvantaged children over the ages of 3 had significantly lower scores, compared to the scores of
middle–class children (Birns, 1999, p.

John Locke
The enlightenment era arose in the modern cultural ideology of the 18th century, as ideas among
philosophers had a widespread effect among the society. The age of enlightenment, in western
society, projected the rejection of traditional Christianity, western philosophy, intellectual advances,
scientific, and cultural life, government legitimacy and authority. Upon the enlightenment period
multiple philosophers emerged, the individuals arose to leading figures using reason to understand
all aspects of human life. The motivations for the enlightenment came primarily from the
Englishmen, John Locke. John Locke was a philosophical influence in both political theory and
theoretical philosophy, which was embraced among the era of 1789–1914 and ... Show more content

This ideology is embraced during the French Revolution as "before the revolution, French society
was grounded in the inequality of rights," among the citizens. (Spielvogel578) The French were
divided into classes, having no voice among the three estates, leading to the national assembly. The
national assembly, influenced by John Locke's ideology of rejecting royal reign superiority, created
the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Locke's argument of revolution against
tyranny was accepted to bring reasonable rule to the nation and citizens. The same liberalist view of
overthrowing of ruler is seen during the napoleon rule. Benjamin Constant published The Principles
of Politics advocating for the regulations of the generals will of the individuals liberty,
"distinguishing between sovereignty, authority, and individual freedom," right before Napoleon's
final defeat. (Primary Sources 342)
Many of John Locke's ideas were input into the Declaration of Independence, as his primary words
"life, liberty" and instead of property, the pursuit of happiness, are the basis of the American
Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Locke's arguments concerning liberty influenced the
works of James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, as his Second Treatise is imitated
in the Declaration of Independence. When the founding fathers adopted the resolution for the

Summary Of Dead Girls Don 'T Write Letters'
Kreena Patel Book Talk For the mystery book talk, I read, "Dead Girls Don't Write Letters" by Gail
Giles.
The setting takes place in present day Texas throughout the whole novel. The setting takes place in
modern day Texas. The main characters are Sunny Reynolds– the main detective who was 13 years
old, Jasmine Reynolds– Sunny's older sister who was loved by everyone and known the perfect
child. She was reported dead when there was a fire in the building that she was in, but was never
dead because she sent a letter to her family saying that she ran away for a little while not knowing

seemed lost without her perfect child, Jasmine. Also, the description stated that this girl was used to
leaving, which sunk my heart because she didn't know where her home was, and she was used to
being kicked out, especially because she didn't have her own family to go back too. "Stop stealing
lives, and go back to your own. I don't know who that is, the girl stated in a sad tone" (130). This
also made me wonder where she was going to go, and what she was going to do after she left the bus
station. At this point of the novel, the author takes away all of the hatred for this character, and
really digs down with details and tone, to care for this

The Support Influence On Development Of Insufficient...
History and Development It was in 1951 that John Bowlby began to write about the opposing
influence on development of insufficient parental care and called attention to the acute distress of
young children separated from their primary caregivers. (Barth, 2005) The quality of early
attachment relationships is correlated with future personality and brain development. "The
Attachment Theory is a foundation theory, developed by Bowlby. It focusses on the form, quality,
and strengths of human attachments made in early life and their effects on development in pro social
behaviors" (Tuner, 2011, p.30). Practitioners have found that the importance of forming a bond with

The secure style happens most often when infant is separated for the caregiver and is trying to
regain the closeness, by coming back together with the caregiver. The avoidant style is represented
by the infant ignoring the caregiver when the when they leave the presents of the infant. Then once
the caregiver returns there is no response from the infant. In this stage the infant has become
accustom to being ignored. The resistant–ambivalent style is characterized by a preoccupation or
fixation on the caregiver in which the caregiver is alternately sought for comfort and rejected. This
shows that the needs of the infant are not being meet. Lastly in the disorganized style it is often seen
when the infant has been mistreated by the caregiver. In this case infants my have experienced
trauma early on. (Hardy, 2007) The Attachment Theory helps practitioners understand how to best
provide help to children and adults. In the Strengths approach, rating for child and mother are

What Do You Learn About Steinbeck’s View of Human Nature...
This essay is about how John Steinbeck represents human nature and the nice and unfavourable
qualities people had during the American depression in the 1930s where the story 'Of Mice and Men'
took place. The story shows the way different people will react diversely to various situations. In
this case, living with the trouble of having to travel to faraway places to search for jobs. It shows
how some people can behave overly difficult while others can be calm, friendly and easy to live
with. The many characters in the story represent the many different combinations of worthy and
unworthy qualities but this essay shall concentrate on three characters Slim, Curley and Crooks.

Crooks is a very good representation of a victim of one of the worst qualities in humans – racism.
He also represents how some people may react to such mistreatment. He shows how the cruelty to
victims can change them and cause them to feel lonely and sometimes angry in Crooks' case. 'I can't
play because I'm black.' This shows how racist people exclude him from activities and such like just
because he is black in colour showing racial prejudice. Crooks also expresses the intolerance shown
towards him by other people when he says 'If I say something, why it's just a nigger sayin' it.'
Another example of the discrimination is when Candy compliments his room and crooks replies in
the tone of sarcasm, 'Sure, and a manure pile under the window.' His living conditions also show the
lack of respect towards Crooks – his ' bunk was a long box filled with hay.' Although Crooks has to
live in this way, John Steinbeck writes how he takes it and gets on with it. 'He kept his distance and
demanded that other people kept theirs. Crooks also shows his loneliness – Sometimes he gets
thinkin', an' he got nothing to tell him what's so an' what ain't so.' This shows how he, unlike Lennie,
has no one to talk to or share thoughts with, no one to express his feelings to or ask a question.

A Stranger Essay : Kindness To A Stranger
Kindness to a Stranger
It was a chilly evening in Southern Virginia many years ago. There was the old man whose beards
were glazed by the winter's frost, as he hopelessly waited for a ride across the river. Due to the frigid
north wind, his body was numb and stiff. Edward, who was passing by saw this desperate old man,
who looked so confused and helpless. He asked the old man, "what are you doing here at this late
hour?" The freezing man answered, "I am waiting for a ride to take me home." Edward took some
time with the old man, as they waited for a ride to take him to the next side of the river. The wait
seemed endless and ineffective. However, they both heard the faint, steady rhythm of approaching
hooves dashing along the icy path. Anxiously, the old man and Edwin watched as several riders
curved the bend. He let the first one pass without seeking attention from him. Apparently, Edward
was very annoyed, asking him the reason for not stopping the passing horseman. The man kept quiet
as he checked out on whether there was another one coming. The another one passed by, followed
by other two. When Edward saw that the old man was not using any effort to seek help from either
of the riders, he was tired and decided to leave the old man alone.
After a while, the last horseman by the name John Denis neared the spot where the old man had sat
like a snow statue. As this one came near, the old man caught the horseman's eye and said, "Sir,
would you mind giving a helpless old man a

Child Abuse Is A Serious Problem With Devastating...
Child Abuse Prevention
Stated Problem
Child abuse and neglect is a serious problem with devastating consequences, both short and long
term (CDC, 2014). As professionals and mandated reporters, it is imperative for registered nurses to
be aware of child abuse and neglect as well as have an understanding of the signs and symptoms of
child maltreatment. Using evidence–based practice regarding proven strategies that reduce child
abuse will decrease the short and long term effects of child maltreatment. When approaching a topic
as serious as child abuse, it is important for nurses to understand their role in reporting and
preventing further child abuse. This paper will examine child abuse prevention strategies as they
relate to nursing by further examining nurses' knowledge and experiences in reporting child abuse.
Literature Review
Within the review of literature, twenty – six articles met the inclusion criteria and were evaluated.
The four interventions that showed effectiveness in preventing child maltreatment include: home–
visiting, parent education, abusive head trauma prevention, and multi–component interventions.
Three of the interventions showed effectiveness in reducing risk factors including: home visiting,
parent education and child sexual abuse prevention. The following three articles have been
described in detail within our literature review. The first article, entitled "Preventing child abuse and
neglect with parent training: evidence and opportunities,"

only then to find out that someone else had committed a crime. Roxie's only chance at fame again
was to pretend to faint and to pretend that she is pregnant, thus concluding Act 1. ("Full Script

The symbolism in the first act shows how corrupt Chicago law enforcement can be and how easily
the media can be persuaded by giving lies to the public. The play is trying to tell the reader that in
this time of day, the media and the common people are so easily brainwashed by current events that
the media will praise criminals, this even happens in the media today.
Act 2 starts with Amos finding out about Roxie's pregnancy, but while he is calling out for attention
to let everyone know that he is the dad, no one notices him like he is invisible. After Roxie returns
back to prison with all of the attention on her, she has a huge argument with Billy because Roxie

Charles W. Chestnutt's The Marrow of Tradition
Clearly, one can expect differing critical views of a novel; from the
author's perspective we see one view, from a publisher's another, and from
the reviewer's yet another. This is especially true of Charles W.
Chesnutt's The Marrow of Tradition. If one observes both the contemporary
reviews of the novel and letters exchanged between Chesnutt and his
friends and publisher, Houghton, Mifflin, and Co., one will see the
disparity in opinions regarding the work. Chesnutt himself felt the work

Reflecting upon the title of this essay, The American People Are Too
Sensible to Waste Their Time Upon Such Silly Rot, taken from the review of
The Marrow of Tradition by Katherine Glover, it is interesting to note
that the novel did receive a certain amount of public success. Chesnutt
revealed the popularity of the novel to daughter Ethel in October of its
publication year (prior to the reviews cited here). The line from Glover's
review is obviously a mean–spirited attack by a racist reviewer, and is
ultimately ironic in that it did not accurately depict the sentiments of
the reading public. And in a series of letters to Booker T. Washington
Chesnutt expresses his belief that the novel has helped him to "arrive" as
a popular novelist. He also notes the probable popularity of the novel in
a letter to his publisher in November 1901.
All of the reviews presented here, and Chesnutt's own letters, bring to
light the sometimes apparent gap between what is achieved in the realm of
"quality" and what is achieved in "purpose." Clearly, with few exceptions,
The Marrow of Tradition was perceived as a "purpose" novel, one which
proposed to uncover the

Church Proclamation As The Material Of Dogmatics
Heejoon Jeon.
The Church Dogmatics. §3. Church proclamation as the material of Dogmatics
While I read this part, I was wondering what the three guys would think of the best way for churches
to help non–believers to come to faith. It might be very speculative, since they didn't explicitly write
about it. However, I want to imagine what they would answer if I ask to them.
All of them would agree that coming to faith is up to God's sovereignty. However, they would also
agree that God may use the church as a secondary cause. Then, what could be the best way to help
those who attend church but yet to come to faith?
Schleiermacher
In On Religion, Schleiermacher argues that religion is not to be identified with either knowledge or
action. It lies at the deeper level of our being, and we could discover that the true seat of religion is
feeling. (41) Also in Christian Faith, he asserts the same statement that "The piety which forms the
basis of all ecclesiastical communions is, considered purely in itself, neither a
Knowing nor a Doing, but a modification of Feeling, or of immediate self–consciousness." (5)
According to his view, we need to help non–believers to feel their self–consciousness. How? First of
all, Schleiermacher might disagree with the idea of teaching doctrine. He says that Doctrines are
only the shadows of our religious emotions (On religion, 8). Through Josef's mouth, he says that "all

Postmodernism And Adolescence : The Outsiders
Postmodernism refuses to be pinned down and defined by a set of definitive characteristics or
parameters. Its fluid definition begs to be poked and prodded, unwilling to offer a solid answer of
what constitutes a Postmodern text. Similarly, the construct of adolescent identity ebbs and flows,
now influenced by the advent of social media and its new genre of storytelling. Postmodernism and
adolescence together form an interesting perspective that has been catalyzed by Young Adult
Literature. The disregard for Young Adult Literature as a substantive genre worthy of critical study
mirrors the cultural disregard for adolescence as a valid human experience, a tension that can be
alleviated by a Postmodern reading of YA texts.
Postmodern themes have been creeping into Young Adult Literature for decades, testing the water to
see if this genre could host its disruptive behaviors and outlandish ideas. S.E. Hinton's 1967 novel,
The Outsiders, plays with tenets of Postmodern fiction but does not fully submerse itself in the
chaos of the theory. Hinton's book toes the line between a traditional linear text and that of a full–on
Postmodern novel, such as W.D. Myers's turn of the century publication Monster. Evidenced by
scholarly studies of the novel's tropes and themes, Monster embodies YAL's embrace of
Postmodernism and fits snugly within the generally agreed upon characteristics of the theory both in
form and content. More recent and less critically studied, John Green's The Fault in

Word Of God As Written, Incarnate, And Proclaimed
Word Of God As Written, Incarnate, and Proclaimed:
Barth theorizes that Jesus Christ is the Word of God in three co–equal forms: the Word revealed, the
Word written, and the Word proclaimed. As a co–centric circle the three forms of the one Word of
God labor together in seamless harmony to produce the substance of all divine revelation.
The Word Revealed: The New Testament notion of the incarnation – "the Word of God," is
inescapably centered on the idea that God has formed alliance between His divinity and humanity in
order to provide reconciliation for humankind. The inseparability or unification of the two natures of
Christ (fully human/fully God) is the bridge by which Christ apprehends the Priestly office.
Barth hopes to underscore that the act of God's self–disclosure is the actual person of Jesus Christ.
The Word Written: For Barth, the written Word can never stand alone as the impartation of
knowledge about God, it must always be assumed in the context of relationship. Revelation is thus
understood mainly as the communication of a relationship between the spiritual Word and the
physical world. The Word written is not simply a collection of personal religious intentions,
expressions, and understandings. Barth does not view the written Word as religious views, but as an
objective event where Christ is the subject of the revelation. "Scripture is Holy and the Word of God
as by the Holy Spirit it became and will become to the church the witness of God's

Old Yeller
Abstract
When people think of the book or the movie, Old Yeller, it is often thought of as a story about the
bond between a boy and his dog, a common theme in many TV shows and books. However, Old
Yeller, as it turns out, proves to be much more than that; it is a true coming–of–age story. At 14
years old, Travis Coates lives with his mother and little brother, Arliss, in the hill country of Texas
during the 1860s when his father must leave home to work on a cattle drive. He leaves Travis to "act

self." He needs to take on the rolf of a man. He has many conflicting roles to deal with–
disciplinarian to his younger brother, Arliss, only to get scolded by his mother for doing so which
leaves him feeling there is no winning because of the conflict caused by assuming so many roles–
boy, playmate, man, and protector. These conflicts frustrate Travis who thought it was not fair and
thinks to himself, "how could I be the man of the family if nobody paid any attention to what I
thought or said...I sulked and felt sorry for myself all the time...[and] the more I thought of it the
angrier I at got at that big yeller dog." (Gibson 1956). Travis feels offended, too, that Lisbeth turns

Barth
The Importance to Christian History
Barth stands out in the history of theology as an important source and one of the greatest theologian
of his age. With deep conviction, that theology is a serious and responsible intellectual discipline
with its own proportions. Barth used his time to serve God through his teaching and writing. Barth
taught that our knowledge corresponds to God's knowledge when our thought is conformed to God's
Word, and that our guidance is found in the decision–making of faithful obedience. God endowed
the human being with decision–making by grace in Christ to become a decision–making agent.

Conclusion
Karl Barth was the most important Swiss theologian of the twentieth century. Without a doubt, his
theology had style and thorough reconstruction many times. He reached high in his thinking, and
speaking for the sake of humankind which cries out for God. Barth was a witness for Christ. His
entire life and thoughts announced that "God" is a cheerful word and our knowledge corresponds to
God's knowledge when our thoughts are conformed to God's Word. We learn from Barth to stay
centered on Jesus Christ, because if do not take heed, we risk competing with other knowledge that
can distract us for our purpose.
Christian theology can be viewed as teaching the language and concepts that shape belief and
practices of the community. Karl Barth edified the community of Jesus Christ and helped shape a
century. Barth has also had a profound effect on Christian

Charles Engen Chapter Summary
Charles Engen initiates us positively by encouraging us to think what if each church would begin to
see itself as God's Missionary People. There is much to commend in his book as Engen asks the
church to become in fact what it is by faith, a marvelous statement. Further insights come from
statistical analysis, probing questions of eccesiology directed at questioning if we superimpose
ourselves in areas of polity, form, structure or tradition upon the cultures we reach. I agree
completely that making cosmetic changes or restructuring the denomination may not translate into
crossing barriers from church to non church for the sake of the gospel. The church is compared with
the noble works of the para church which forces us to think about how ... Show more content on

Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. 2 Corinthians 6:17 "Now "the world," in this
sense, is an enemy to the soul. There are three things which a baptized Christian must renounce and
give up, and three enemies which he must fight with and resist. These three are the flesh, the devil,
and "the world." All three are terrible foes, and all three must be overcome if we would be saved." It
is clear to me that some of the churches quoted by Engen have made great strides in technology and
skill in planning and execution of management with wonderful music, yet are astray. We would
smile if only Engen would have saturated himself with Godly quotes from within his bibliographic
choices such as De Ridder as he speaks of (De Ridder, 1975) Matthew. "The designation of the
sheep in Matt. 15:24 as "lost" has the strong sense of crisis in it. For one thing, man is an object of
value, and both God and his commissioned representative are interested in him. Conclusion and

Of Mice and Men
Of Mice and Men
Thomas Hobbes in his Leviathan states that, "in the state of nature mans life is nasty, brutish and
short". In depression era America, no greater truth could be said. There were millions unemployed,
largely unskilled and living on the margins of society. The lowest of the low were the migrant
labourers travelling from place to place trying to scratch a living. They often had to travel illegally
by freight car with all its consequent dangers. Their life expectancy was low, crime was rampant and
despair was a fellow traveller. This is the setting of John Steinbeck 's, ‘Of Mice and Men '.
The novel explores the predatory nature of human existence. It explores loneliness, isolation and
friendship. A major theme is that of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Profound Truth
Oppression does not always come from the strong and powerful. In Steinbeck 's world, the weak
prey on the weaker–for example, Curley 's wife threatens to have Crook 's lynched. What we can
take from incidents like this is that the strength to oppress others is itself born of weakness.
Economic Reality
There is no doubt that this book is a critique of pure market capitalism. The alienation of the worker
or the unemployed is very evident. The ethics are ‘dog eat dog '–a total lack of regard for the
dignity of the human person. The struggle of Labour to regain its dignity is best exemplified in
Steinbeck 's ‘In Dubious Battle '.
Motifs
1. A man only world
2. The Corrupting Power of Women
3. Loneliness
4. The Human Spirit
Steinbeck has been criticized for many things including the creation of ‘a mans ' world where
women take a secondary place. There is no doubt but that he was influenced by the macho acting
Hemingway in this regard. Women are looked on as self–serving and or dangerous, the Femme
Fatale beloved of Film Noir. They tempt men to behave in ways they would otherwise not do, e.g.–
Curley 's wife fulfils the dangerous flirt stereotype. Loneliness is a recurring motif in the novel.
There is a great fear of being cast off–each character is looking for a friend. A less that obvious
motif is that of the strength and resilience of the Human Spirit. A novel of comparison here is Alan
Sillitoe 's, ‘The

The Summary Of Roland Michell's 'Possession'
First Question: The Summary
The novel Possession is about a 29–year–old Roland Michell, who is at a London Library basement,
examining books by a poet named Randolph H. Ash. Roland's job is to research on Mr. Ash work for
his adviser. In the novel, Roland is unhappy with his job because of his salary, and he is also
unhappy with his life. While he was in the basement looking at the books, two letters that Mr. Ash
wrote, and when they fall out and they show a hint that will change his life. These letters are to a
female poet. Everything written in the letters describes the poet, and using his research senses, he
thought the letters could have been for Christabel LaMotte. Roland doesn't tell anyone about the
letters. On his way home he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Second Question: The Difference
This novel is a great novel, I don't think I would change anything but if I had to pick one thing then
it would be the title. I felt the title that the author had picked doesn't go with the story. In the novel,
Roland had an interest in finding out more about Christabel, but he wasn't possessed by her. I felt
there wasn't anything "possession" type in this novel. when you first read the title you would
automatically think its a ghost novel but it's not. When it starts out explaining the setting it says that
the story takes place in the 19th century and then you would get an idea that it'll show some type of
spiritual things since it's from back in the time and it doesn't. I feel the author could have picked a
better title.
Third Question: The Recommendation
If you are into romance, with a little adventure novel, then I would recommend this novel. This
novel has a good plot structure, and it showed the narrator point of view clearly. One of the things I
liked about this novel is the tone that the author used. In this novel, there were two types of tone that
were used and those were an optimistic tone and a deep feelings tone.
Fourth Question: Reflection
Quotation (pg.301): "I cannot let you burn me up, nor can I resist you. No mere human can stand in
fire and not be consumed"
Reflection: This quote was said at the end of the novel, when Dr. Maud was expressing her love to
Roland. She was scared that there relationship

Of Mice and Men Importance of Friendship George and Lennie
Of Mice and Men has many themes presented by Steinbeck, one of which is about friendship. The
novella shows the relationship between the protagonists, George and Lennie, and showing how they
try to achieve the American Dream by working together. This is in contrast to many of the other
characters who are alone by themselves which seems to be the norm at the time of the Great
Depression. The reader is able to look at how the need to have a companion is portrayed by
Steinbeck, especially during the harsh economic times that the story is set in.
The reliance that George and Lennie have on one another is able to emphasise on how it is only the
friendship between the two of them which allows them to survive. Lennie saying 'I got you to look

Although most of the men have no true friends, they at least get to play cards and associate with
others. Lennie, because of the colour of his skin and his friendship with George, cannot possibly
understand Crooks ' plight. George chooses to kill Lennie at the novel 's end, realizing that Lennie
could not stand the loneliness of being locked up in a prison or an asylum. This is also able to
highlight the true friendship which is separated at the end which also brings an end to the novella.
Thus the need for companionship, which is shown by other characters that are victimised within
society, is emphasised as other strive for what George and Lennie have.
Throughout the book Steinbeck uses many characters to emphasize a message which he wants to get
across to the reader. This is how the importance of being able to share a friend was vital during the
1930's as it was the time of the Depression era and everyone always needed someone else to be
with. This is what makes the true friendship between George and Lennie a key component of the

Writing Against Death in The Floating Opera Essay
Writing Against Death in The Floating Opera
In the opening chapter of The Floating Opera, Todd Andrews makes an observation that storytelling
is not his cup of tea, because digressions are impossible to contain, and that makes it hard for him to
concentrate on a particular line of narration; every image he creates breeds other images, words
bring about other words, there being no end to "new figures and new chases" (Barth 2). This remark
suggests that Todd's existence is, indeed, confined to the reality he forges by telling his tale; this
fictitious reality regenerates itself. The tone of the passage also implies that Todd enjoys not a little
the unprecedented freedom this realm allows to digress at will, chasing the ... Show more content on

As Dennis Martin points out, their is a question how conscious Todd is of the distinction between
history and the invented past (31). Todd's reference to his reading may well validate the argument
that a good deal of the story, if not all of it, is pure fiction.
Todd's motives for creating his tale are directly related to the relationship between fact and artifact
in his writing in his life. He is unreliable as a narrator not only because the facts of his story are
suspect; he would fictionalize any event. Todd's mind is purely aesthetic; according to Thomas
LeClair, life to him is "a fiction to be created"(719). It is most noteworthy that even in extreme
situations (losing his virginity, if it may be regarded as such, or fighting in the front line in World
War I), when reality is brutally tangible, Todd Andrews is still able to observe himself "objectively,"
maintain the detachment which is so essential to a writer. In other words, it is not the fact of his
experience that is important to him, but rather the artifact (LeClair 720): his mind is not as much
into the situations he goes through, but is rather set on his account of them.
But why does Todd Andrews embrace aesthetization of life? A clue to that could be the the argument
of Charles Harris, who brings up the the mind–body split in Todd Andrews––the phenomenon, as he

Essay about The Symbol of the Heart in The Floating Opera
The Symbol of the Heart in The Floating Opera
The heart is the dominant symbol in The Floating Opera, more important even than the symbol of
the showboat of the novel's title. From beginning to end the book is richly populated by references
to the heart on both a literal, physical level, and a figurative, symbolic one. In the first case, literal
references are made to Todd's heart condition. In the second case, the heart plays two symbolic
roles; not only does it serve as a symbol of Todd's emotional and non–rational side, but the frailty of
Todd's heart serves as a correlative for the fragility of all human life. This paper will examine
several examples from The Floating Opera that demonstrate this multi–levelled usage of the ... Show

This example is typical of the double nature of the heart in the work.
One of the most striking and sustained examples of the heart's dual function is found in the chapter,
"A raison de coeur". Here Todd explains his reasons for paying his hotel bill and reregistering every
day. Todd says, "I have an excellent reason for not doing so, but it is a raison de coeur, if I may say
so – a reason of the heart and not of the head."4 In one sense, Todd's decision is prompted by the
physical reality of his medical circumstance; he writes, "Each soft beat my sick heart beat might be
my sick heart's last"5, and also:
"Having begun this sentence, I may not live to write its end ... having poured my drink, I may not
live to taste it ... [or it] may pass a live man's tongue to burn a dead man's belly ... having slumbered
I may never wake ... having waked, may never living sleep – this for thirty–five years has been the
condition of my existence, the great fact of my life."6
This is a clear example of the two–fold nature of the heart in the book. Not only is the physical
impact of Todd's heart malady emphasised, but the role of his ailed heart as a symbol for the
weakness and uncertainty

Analysis Of Perfection Wasted By John Updike
What We Lose Through Death of Others
An Explication of John Updike's "Perfection Wasted"
This poem dramatizes the conflict between losing someone's personality through death and the
magic within our own separate worlds. In the poem personality is the most important part of life
because it cannot be replicated by any person in the world because every person's personality is
different and unique in its own way. The personality that is shown in the poem is that the speaker is
happy and full of magic. John Updike uses this poem to tell a story through mostly imagery. The
impression I received throughout the entire poem is the cycle of life.
The author of this poem, John Updike was born on March 18, 1932 and died on January 27, 2009.
He was influenced by several different people such as: William Shakespeare, James Joyce, Marcel
Proust, John Barth, and many other people. One of his famous quotes that I like is "[d]reams come
true; without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them." John Updike wrote many
different things. He wrote short stories, poems, and novels. John Updike's inspiration came from all
over. All of the people that inspired him came from different places.
The main theme in this poem is that one's ways or personality cannot be remade by someone. People
can imitate what a person does or how a person acts, but they will never be able to replicate it one
hundred percent. The speaker in this poem talks about how when someone dies their personality will
be lost forever because it cannot be reperformed by someone else, not even their closest friends or
family members. "Imitators and descendants aren't the same." (Line 14) A person can be near
someone for twenty–four hours a day, seven days a week, fifty–two weeks in a year and still not be
them exactly. When someone dies, there will be glimpses of them in others that they have touched
through their actions, but they will never fully see them in just one single person. They work on
making the most perfect personality for themselves throughout their entire life just to see that when
they die it dies with them. When someone works this hard on something they do not want it to end.
They make people happy by using it, they help people by using

Modern Theology: Karl Barth and Emil Brunner Essay
The doctrine of election has been one of the key subjects discussed by various influential
theologians throughout the two thousand years. Many have attempted to understand and embrace the
enigma of election presented in the bible. It is important to realize that there are many views
pertaining to the doctrine of election ranging from prominent theologians such as Augustine and
Pelagius, Calvin and Arminius, Barth and Brunner and various other theologians and their respective
counterparts. Karl Barth and Emil Brunner are the giants on the subject of modern theology. Their
theological insights are such that even now people are mesmerized by their incredible aptitude for

He presents the theology of election as a focus on the predestination choice God made to be who He
is for humanity. This God does by God electing God the only begotten Son of the eternal God to be
substitute atonement for the humanity and then electing an elected man who is the true Adam that is
Christ Jesus. Barth presents the election done by the Triune Godhead in divine freedom to be for the
humanity which reveals a beyond comprehension and unmeasurable grace and love of God towards
humanity. Thus Jesus Christ is both the electing God and also the elected man. Barth portrays Jesus
Christ as the great pleasure and will of God in force beyond realization. Barth declares that "the
doctrine of election is of God electing man predestined not only of man but also of Himself." Jesus
Christ is not purely the unveiling of the enigma of God. Jesus is the very thing concealed in the heart
of God, and the revelation is of Jesus Christ Himself not anything else. Jesus is the elector God who
is active in electing all of humanity in Himself. Barth's concept of the doctrine of election is the
totality of the Scriptures and the anchor from whence understanding God from a finite perspective
becomes possible. Barth argues that an applicable doctrine of election must have its foundation on
Jesus Christ who is the revelation of God to the humanity. Barth's view on Christ is that of not just
an emissary of election but rather He Himself is

Essay on James Joyce's Araby
Setting in James Joyce's Araby
In the opening paragraphs of James Joyce's short story, "Araby," the setting takes center stage to the
narrator. Joyce tends carefully to the exquisite detail of personifying his setting, so that the narrator's
emotions may be enhanced. To create a genuine sense of mood, and reality, Joyce uses many
techniques such as first person narration, style of prose, imagery, and most of all setting. The setting
of a short story is vital to the development of character.
In the opening paragraph, North Richmond Street is introduced as "blind," and "quiet", yet on it
rests another house which is unoccupied. The narrator states that the house is, "Detached," from the
others on the street, but that, "The other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This image can be evidenced in the rosy cheeks of warm bodies on a cold night. So many parents
can attest, raising an adolescent, is mostly to watch them run through life with blinders on.
When Joyce applies personification to the setting, he creates the mood of the story, and directs the
reader to the double meanings found in the personified setting. As an example of mood, winter
brings with it the connotation of impending gloom, as the narrator claims, "...the houses had grown
sombre...the lamps of the street lifted their feeble lanterns" (379). This idea of Winter casts itself as
the mood, where the feeling of awkward introspection is predominant. The lamps like the people of
Dublin, have grown weary of there own, during Ireland's own battle with identity. In the broader
scope of Joyce's imagery for the short story, it may be said Ireland itself is like the adolescent
struggling to find its way. Joyce's messages of "complacency" during the tremendous social and
political upheaval are encapsulated in the stories like "Araby," that collectively represent the book
"Dubliners."
The double meanings of the description of the physical setting illustrate the finer tuned details of the
character. The narrator describes the "wild" garden behind his house containing a "central" apple–
tree, perhaps suggesting that within the chaos in life some things remain central and focused. Amid
the narrator's chaotic

Celie Argumentative Essay
1. The biggest choice Celie made was to move to Tennessee for a period of time. This turned out
well because she became more confident about herself. She built a pants making company and
stopped relying on her friends. Although she did not realize that she was not moving until Shug
announced that "Us leaving... Celie is coming to Memphis with me" (199), Celie was grateful for
leaving her husband and the toxicity of the environment. She learned to fend for herself and
reflected on her past. By having free time to come to terms with all the experiences she had, Celie
understood that they helped her build character and influenced her decision to stand up for herself.
2. I was surprised when Celie denounced God and her religion for part of the novel. I felt like she
would have been angry, but still continued to write to him. Because religion is a large part of the
South and is ingrained into her, I assumed that she would forgive him more. When she wrote, "I
don't write to God no more... [God] act just like all the other mens I know. Trifling, forgitful, and
lowdown" (192), I was torn between pitying her and applauding her. I pity her because she had too

Revolutionary Characters Review
In the book Revolutionary Characters by Gordan Wood, the degree in which he portrays the
personality and personal philosophies that informed the politics of these early American leaders,
especially Thomas Jefferson, shows that contrary to popular belief that these men were not some
unflawed perfect beings, but they are just like us with their many fears and insecurities. These flaws
appear in all of the founding fathers and this adds a level of realism to them. It also shows that flaws
are a part of human nature.
The members of the founding generation shared what Wood calls a "devotion to the public good," a
belief in the importance of public ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These men had self–serving agendas themselves just like Aaron Burr did but they are hardly
criticized for it. Wood says that Jefferson and Hamilton embody the "democratic world of progress,
Providence and innumerable isolated but equal individuals, there could be little place for the kind of
extraordinary political and intellectual leadership the revolutionary generation had demonstrated,"
and that these men had "politeness, taste, sociability, learning, compassion, and benevolence–and
what it meant to be good political leaders" (22). On the other hand was Burr who was demonized for
his selfish actions in this book. Wood says he embodied "what most American politicians would
eventually become – pragmatic, get–along men."
This clear bias for these historical figures made me think that this book had little nuance and
expertise to offer. It was more of a simple and breezy version of history. There are far too many
definite answers of almost every character on the book. For example, there's an excerpt about
Washington that really encapsulates the bias and simple lack of nuance Wood put into his book. He
says "Washington was truly a great man and the greatest president we ever had" (35). This showed
some blatant favoritism and also him including his opinions in his book as historical fact really
derailed the story for me. This might be true but for a historian to come out with such a simple
conclusion was completely unprofessional. Especially since there

The Importance Of A Child 's Social Development From...
INTRO
As a young child it is vital to have an attached relationship with your primary caregivers. John
Bowlby ––– a British psychologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst, who specializes in child
development ––– introduced a theory that attached relationships allow emotional support and
comfort for infants, only if the caregiver is in the child's life for a long enough periods of time
(Susskind, 1). He was the first person to explore the idea of the attachment theory. Parents, siblings,
and peers all play a big role in a child's social development from infancy through adulthood
(Susskind, 1). If these relationships are constantly disrupted from people being removed from the
child's life, children will typically have a harder time forming good social behaviors and
relationships. While some people grew up without stable caregivers from a young age can grow into
adults with completely normal social behaviors, ultimately, children from these situations tend to
have a harder time forming proper social behaviors and friendships in adulthood. Therefore it's
necessary for kids to have stable relationships with their parental figures or primary guardians from
a young age in order to form their own relationships in the future. Social development is affected by
many different factors. Firstly, parenting styles are one of the biggest effects on socio–development,
mainly because it is so prominent in a child's life from infancy through adulthood. Socio–
development explains a child's

sparked the search for the historical Jesus in which two approaches, "Christology from Above" and
"Christology from Below arose.
Christology from above, associated closely with Rudolf Bultmann, Karl Barth, and Emil Brunner,
was born from the idea that rather than studying the historical Jesus as a man, the best study would
be of the resurrected Christ, His works and the relationship established by faith from His disciples.

Greetings Andre,
In regards to Christology from above, I agree that Faith in Christ is not contingent on rational proof.
It seems absurd to me that theologians have tried to isolate and separate the proclamation of Christ
from the historical account of His life as well as regarding the Book of John over the Synoptic
Gospels for study. (Erickson, 608) Christology from below asserts the need to study the kerygma
with the historical record and to approach them in the same way as ordinary history and Wolfhart
Pannenberg's conclusion of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ had enough proof to be
considered historical fact. Erickson's Augustinian approach purports this model begins with faith,
but it does not remain autonomous of reason. He proposes that faith and reason can work in
conjunction on the concept that the more understanding the researcher receives toward the
kerygmatic Christ, the more he will appreciate and incorporate additional historical research.
(Erickson 614–615)
I agree with you that any study of the Person of Christ

Candide Character Analysis
Discuss the female characters in Candide. Are they victims, or natural survivors? Do they deserve
more pity or more admiration? Take one side only.
In Voltaire's Candide, there is a young fellow that falls in love with a lady. She is kidnapped and the
protagonist, Candide, embarks on a journey to find his love. I believe that he doesn't really love this
young lady, Cunegonde, he is in love with her looks (or is in lust, if you will). We discover that he
really doesn't love her at the end of the novel, but they still marry. The other female characters have
similar backstories and are also seen as a body of desire. The only one that is not seen this way is an
old woman. Regardless of age, all of the women have issues or tragic lives. I pity these people that
have to live in a position that is seen as inferior to the majority of men. While I pity them, I also see
how strong they are, and what they have endured in their lifespan.
A character that is deserving of pity is Cunegonde. Cunegonde came from a line of high ranking
people who are killed later in the novel. She was also kidnapped and raped by Bulgarians. She had
to have sex with two men that were sharing her. When Candide finds her for the first time, the only
thing that he cares about is how beautiful she is. He sees her and immediately believes that he is in
love with her. Later on, in the novel, Candide finds her once again. This time though, she is old and
hasn't aged well. Candide marries her and makes it known to the reader that it wasn't out of love, it
was out of pity. I believe that this character is deserving of more pity, because no one deserves to go
through the things that she has. No one took the time to get to know her. Candide didn't really care
that much about her when he saw that she wasn't beautiful anymore. Pacquette is a character that
deserves pity because her life was great until she started having sex with Pangloss and gave him
syphilis. As a result, she ran out of money and became broke and she had no other option but to
resort to prostitution. On Candide's journey to find Cunegonde he lands in Venice with martin and
recognizes Pacquette and felt pity for her and he gave her a generous amount of money. "Candide

Essay about Features of Post Modern Fictions
Some of the dominant features of postmodern fictions include temporal disorder, the erosion of the
sense of time, a foregrounding of words as fragmenting material signs, a pervasive and pointless use
of pastiche, loose association of ideas, paranoia and the creation of vicious circles or a loss of
destination between separate levels of discourse, which are all symptoms of the language disorders
of postmodernist fictions. The postmodern novel may be summed up as:
Late modernism.
Anti–modernism.
Not avant–garde tendency (may be avant–garde within a literary period).
Emphasizes plot than character.
Characters are fragmented/multiple.
Experimental.
Misogynist.
Denigration of female writers.
Matter of packaging.

Choudhary states:
The major feature of this kind of fiction lies in the subversion of the assumptions and generic traits
and function of fiction, including modernist novel. Generically postmodernist fiction is self–
questioning in nature, skeptical about its possibilities, rules and principles. Its function is
disillusionary; it dives into the underside of fiction and explodes its fallacies...Postmodernist text
directs itself to the suspension of meaning by using disruptive narrative, polyphony, multiple ending
and the like thereby frustrating intelligibility. It is devoid of teleology and causality (12). Some
critics are of the view that postmodern fictions do not convey any moral values and imparts untrue
elements. "In a postmodern word, literature is just another text. You can forget all that stuff about
truth and value–and other alienating lies perpetual by a deliberately selective version of history
controlled by crazy power freaks and their lackey dupes. 'Truth' is only what circulates as such:
hence the importance of technology and the media to an understanding of 'our' world today. 'Values'
are only effects of cultural traditions; hence the importance of becoming cynical today, in order not
to be suppressed under the suffocating of 'culture' and 'tradition'" (Lucy viii). A.S.D. Pillai states
that:
The contemporary cultural situation, the postmodern text reveals in its construction a world of
valueless vaudeville. But, as has been repeatedly pointed out, black

Attachment Theory On The Relationships Between Parents And...

  • 1. Attachment Theory On The Relationships Between Parents And... Attachment theory concentrates on the relationships between parents and children or parents and primary caregivers. According John Bowlby, the author of attachment theory, attachment is inborn and is as essential for survival as food, water, and air; it is an emotional, object specific relationship that develops towards a primary caregiver (Bowlby, 1969). Through series of experiments Bowlby explained the nature and the role of physical proximity of a child to a caregiver as a secure base for exploration of the world (Bowlby, 1969). He concluded that it is essential for a child's healthy development to have at least one caregiver who takes on a role of that secure base, which Bowlby also referred to as secure haven (Bowlby, 1969). Bowlby identified three main stages of the development of an attachment. During each of the stages a child exhibits different types of proximity–seeking behaviors (Bowlby, 1969). In turn, a parent responds to those behaviors and the quality of those responses contribute into the development of internal working models in a child (Bowlby, 1969). As defined by Bowlby (1969), internal working model is a dynamic process that enables a child to predict parental responses in times of distress. The critical period for developing internal working models is between 6 months and 2 years of old (Bowlby, 1969). Bowlby proposed that if during this critical period a parent was responsive to the child's needs and provided a secure base for a child, the child would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Research Paper On The Gospel Of John The Gospel of John The genius of the Apostle John resides in his ability to penetrate to the theological foundations that undergird the events of Jesus' life. He reaches to the deeper baptism and the calling of the Twelve are doubtless presupposed, they are not actually described. Even themes central to the Synoptics have almost disappeared: in particular, the kingdom of God or the kingdom of heaven, so much a part of the preaching of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels and the central theme of His narrative parables, is scarcely mentioned as such (cf. 3:3, 5; 18:36). meaning of the events, to the relationships of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the work of redemption, and to the Trinitarian love for humanity which ... There are fewer brief, pithy utterances, but more discourses; but even here some major discourses found in the Synoptics (e.g. the Olivet Discourse) are not found in John. Although Jesus'.Page 2 Introduction Second, John includes a fair amount of material of which the Synoptists make no mention. All of the material in John chapters 2 thru 4, for instance, including His miraculous transformation of water into wine, His dialogue with Nicodemus and His ministry in Samaria, find no Synoptic counterpart. Further, the resurrection of Lazarus, Jesus' frequent visits to Jerusalem, and His extended dialogues or dis–courses in the Temple and in various synagogues, not to mention much of His private instruction to His disciples, are all exclusive to the Fourth Gospel. No less striking are the forcefully presented themes that dominate John but that are largely absent from the Synoptics. Only in John is Jesus explicitly identified with God (1:1, 18; 20:28). Here, too, Jesus makes a series of important "I am" statements which are qualified: I am the light of the world, the resurrection and the life, the good shepherd, the vine, the living water, the way, the truth and the life. These culminate in a series of absolute (unqualified) "I AM" statements that are redolent of God Himself (cf. 6:20; 8:24, 28, 58). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Best Theology Would Need No Advocates Karl Barth once stated, "The best theology would need no advocates; it will prove itself." Karl Barth can be characterized as one of the greatest influential protestant theologians of the twentieth century. Barth shed new light on Protestant theology and fundamentally reshaped it, facing numerous altercations and challenges along the way. However, Barth's past was preeminent, as it acted as a foundation for his impending theological methods to come. Karl Barth was born on May 10th, 1886 in Basel Switzerland. Barth was the son of Fritz Barth, and Anna Katharina Barth. Barth spent a majority of his childhood in Bern Switzerland and was pursued by his four sibling. In Bern, Barth's father was selected for the position as an educator of the New testament and early Christian church. From 1904 to 1909 Barth attended some of the most prestigious institutions such as Bern, Tubingen, Berlin and Marburg. It was at Berlin in which Barth studied liberal theologian Adolf con Harnack and also became heavily influenced by Wilhelm Hermann and Freidrich Schleiermacher in his time at Marburg as well. It was then that Barth became profoundly enticed in the nature of the scientific method. After carrying out time in Geneva, Barth soon was chosen to serve at a parish in Safenwil, Switzerland. Shortly after in 1913 he marries a brilliant violinist Nelly Hoffmann, and has a daughter and four sons (The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica, 2007). • 7. The Two Natures Of Jesus Christ Before we discuss about the two natures of Christ, we should know the definition of nature itself. Nature is the essential qualities of something that which make it what it is. All being in this world has their own nature which usually a thing or a person only has one nature, for examples, a human absolutely only has a human nature and the animal only has their animal natures, but Jesus Christ has two natures at once in Himself which is the human nature and the divine nature. Jesus is the second person of Trinity which is He is God that has the divine nature, but when He took a flesh and being a human, He is also has the human nature. Jesus is 100% God and 100% human. Karl Barth said that Jesus Christ is the "true man" which is visible and He is also the "true God" which is invisible, He is both the God who has took a flesh to be a human who is exalted to God. McGinnis said that when the reformed appealed to this principle, it is closely connected to the extra Calvinisticum, this principle was a feature of Reformed Christology that expressed the finitude of Christ's manhood "and therefore its incapacity for receiving divine attributes, such as omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresent" (McGinnis, 2014). • 9. Essay about The Importance of Attachment for the... Attachment theory is the idea that a child needs to form a close relationship with at least one primary caregiver. The theory proved that attachment is necessary to ensure successful social and emotional development in an infant. It is critical for this to occur in the child's early infant years. However, failed to prove that this nurturing can only be given by a mother (Birns, 1999, p. 13). Many aspects of this theory grew out of psychoanalyst, John Bowlby's research. There are several other factors that needed to be taken into account before the social worker reached a conclusion; such as issues surrounding poverty, social class and temperament. These factors, as well as an explanation of insecure attachment will be further explored in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This type of attachment is relatively uncommon, found in only 10% of children (Golde, 2014). High levels of distress upon separation often signify that the bond between an adult and infant is lacking in certain areas. The mother is seen by the social worker to be failing to respond to the toddler's needs; resulting in the toddler becoming highly distressed. Through this view, it is evident that the social worker had good reason to question the toddler's attachment with his mother. However, there are several other factors outside of the mother's control that could be influencing the toddler's development that needs to be considered. Firstly, issues surrounding poverty and social class. A study conducted by Everett Waters in 1978 found that out of the 50 middle–class children that were observed, 48 maintained their attachment from 12 to 18 months (Birns, 1999, p. 14). A further study conducted by Vaughn et al in 1979 using the 'Strange Situation' method and questionnaires. Found that through the 100 under–privileged mothers and infants surveyed, the change of attachment classification was directly linked to the mothers' stress; the extent of the stress experienced by the mother's impacted on the infant's attachment (Birns, 1999, p. 15). Along the same lines, studies conducted by AECOM found that disadvantaged children over the ages of 3 had significantly lower scores, compared to the scores of middle–class children (Birns, 1999, p. ... The national assembly, influenced by John Locke's ideology of rejecting royal reign superiority, created the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Locke's argument of revolution against tyranny was accepted to bring reasonable rule to the nation and citizens. The same liberalist view of overthrowing of ruler is seen during the napoleon rule. The setting takes place in present day Texas throughout the whole novel. The setting takes place in modern day Texas. The main characters are Sunny Reynolds– the main detective who was 13 years old, Jasmine Reynolds– Sunny's older sister who was loved by everyone and known the perfect child. She was reported dead when there was a fire in the building that she was in, but was never dead because she sent a letter to her family saying that she ran away for a little while not knowing that they thought she was dead, Deborah Hallard a girl who looked and pretended to be Jasmine Reynolds (the girl who died), but knew everything ... Also, the description stated that this girl was used to leaving, which sunk my heart because she didn't know where her home was, and she was used to being kicked out, especially because she didn't have her own family to go back too. "Stop stealing lives, and go back to your own. I don't know who that is, the girl stated in a sad tone" (130). This also made me wonder where she was going to go, and what she was going to do after she left the bus station. At this point of the novel, the author takes away all of the hatred for this character, and really digs down with details and tone, to care for this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

History and Development It was in 1951 that John Bowlby began to write about the opposing influence on development of insufficient parental care and called attention to the acute distress of young children separated from their primary caregivers. This essay is about how John Steinbeck represents human nature and the nice and unfavourable qualities people had during the American depression in the 1930s where the story 'Of Mice and Men' took place. The story shows the way different people will react diversely to various situations. In this case, living with the trouble of having to travel to faraway places to search for jobs. It shows how some people can behave overly difficult while others can be calm, friendly and easy to live with. Crooks is a very good representation of a victim of one of the worst qualities in humans – racism. He also represents how some people may react to such mistreatment. He shows how the cruelty to victims can change them and cause them to feel lonely and sometimes angry in Crooks' case. 'I can't play because I'm black.' This shows how racist people exclude him from activities and such like just because he is black in colour showing racial prejudice. Crooks also expresses the intolerance shown towards him by other people when he says 'If I say something, why it's just a nigger sayin' it.' Another example of the discrimination is when Candy compliments his room and crooks replies in the tone of sarcasm, 'Sure, and a manure pile under the window.' His living conditions also show the lack of respect towards Crooks – his ' bunk was a long box filled with hay.' Although Crooks has to live in this way, John Steinbeck writes how he takes it and gets on with it. 'He kept his distance and demanded that other people kept theirs. Crooks also shows his loneliness – Sometimes he gets thinkin', an' he got nothing to tell him what's so an' what ain't so.' This shows how he, unlike Lennie, has no one to talk to or share thoughts with, no one to express his feelings to or ask a question. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. A Stranger Essay : Kindness To A Stranger Kindness to a Stranger It was a chilly evening in Southern Virginia many years ago. There was the old man whose beards were glazed by the winter's frost, as he hopelessly waited for a ride across the river. Due to the frigid north wind, his body was numb and stiff. Edward, who was passing by saw this desperate old man, who looked so confused and helpless. He asked the old man, "what are you doing here at this late hour?" The freezing man answered, "I am waiting for a ride to take me home." Edward took some time with the old man, as they waited for a ride to take him to the next side of the river. The wait seemed endless and ineffective. However, they both heard the faint, steady rhythm of approaching hooves dashing along the icy path. Anxiously, the old man and Edwin watched as several riders curved the bend. He let the first one pass without seeking attention from him. Apparently, Edward was very annoyed, asking him the reason for not stopping the passing horseman. The man kept quiet as he checked out on whether there was another one coming. The another one passed by, followed by other two. When Edward saw that the old man was not using any effort to seek help from either of the riders, he was tired and decided to leave the old man alone. After a while, the last horseman by the name John Denis neared the spot where the old man had sat like a snow statue. As this one came near, the old man caught the horseman's eye and said, "Sir, would you mind giving a helpless old man a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Child Abuse Prevention Stated Problem Child abuse and neglect is a serious problem with devastating consequences, both short and long term (CDC, 2014). As professionals and mandated reporters, it is imperative for registered nurses to be aware of child abuse and neglect as well as have an understanding of the signs and symptoms of child maltreatment. Using evidence–based practice regarding proven strategies that reduce child abuse will decrease the short and long term effects of child maltreatment. When approaching a topic as serious as child abuse, it is important for nurses to understand their role in reporting and preventing further child abuse. This paper will examine child abuse prevention strategies as they relate to nursing by further examining nurses' knowledge and experiences in reporting child abuse. Literature Review Within the review of literature, twenty – six articles met the inclusion criteria and were evaluated. The four interventions that showed effectiveness in preventing child maltreatment include: home– visiting, parent education, abusive head trauma prevention, and multi–component interventions. Three of the interventions showed effectiveness in reducing risk factors including: home visiting, parent education and child sexual abuse prevention. The following three articles have been described in detail within our literature review. The play is trying to tell the reader that in this time of day, the media and the common people are so easily brainwashed by current events that the media will praise criminals, this even happens in the media today. Chestnutt's The Marrow of Tradition Clearly, one can expect differing critical views of a novel; from the author's perspective we see one view, from a publisher's another, and from the reviewer's yet another. This is especially true of Charles W. Chesnutt's The Marrow of Tradition. If one observes both the contemporary reviews of the novel and letters exchanged between Chesnutt and his friends and publisher, Houghton, Mifflin, and Co., one will see the disparity in opinions regarding the work. Church proclamation as the material of Dogmatics While I read this part, I was wondering what the three guys would think of the best way for churches to help non–believers to come to faith. It might be very speculative, since they didn't explicitly write about it. However, I want to imagine what they would answer if I ask to them. All of them would agree that coming to faith is up to God's sovereignty. However, they would also agree that God may use the church as a secondary cause. Then, what could be the best way to help those who attend church but yet to come to faith? Schleiermacher In On Religion, Schleiermacher argues that religion is not to be identified with either knowledge or action. It lies at the deeper level of our being, and we could discover that the true seat of religion is feeling. (41) Also in Christian Faith, he asserts the same statement that "The piety which forms the basis of all ecclesiastical communions is, considered purely in itself, neither a Knowing nor a Doing, but a modification of Feeling, or of immediate self–consciousness." (5) According to his view, we need to help non–believers to feel their self–consciousness. How? First of all, Schleiermacher might disagree with the idea of teaching doctrine. He says that Doctrines are only the shadows of our religious emotions (On religion, 8). Through Josef's mouth, he says that "all speech making too tedious and cold." • 34. Postmodernism And Adolescence : The Outsiders Postmodernism refuses to be pinned down and defined by a set of definitive characteristics or parameters. Its fluid definition begs to be poked and prodded, unwilling to offer a solid answer of what constitutes a Postmodern text. Similarly, the construct of adolescent identity ebbs and flows, now influenced by the advent of social media and its new genre of storytelling. Postmodernism and adolescence together form an interesting perspective that has been catalyzed by Young Adult Literature. The disregard for Young Adult Literature as a substantive genre worthy of critical study mirrors the cultural disregard for adolescence as a valid human experience, a tension that can be alleviated by a Postmodern reading of YA texts. Postmodern themes have been creeping into Young Adult Literature for decades, testing the water to see if this genre could host its disruptive behaviors and outlandish ideas. S.E. Hinton's 1967 novel, The Outsiders, plays with tenets of Postmodern fiction but does not fully submerse itself in the chaos of the theory. Hinton's book toes the line between a traditional linear text and that of a full–on Postmodern novel, such as W.D. Myers's turn of the century publication Monster. Evidenced by scholarly studies of the novel's tropes and themes, Monster embodies YAL's embrace of Postmodernism and fits snugly within the generally agreed upon characteristics of the theory both in form and content. • 36. Word Of God As Written, Incarnate, And Proclaimed Word Of God As Written, Incarnate, and Proclaimed: Barth theorizes that Jesus Christ is the Word of God in three co–equal forms: the Word revealed, the Word written, and the Word proclaimed. As a co–centric circle the three forms of the one Word of God labor together in seamless harmony to produce the substance of all divine revelation. The Word Revealed: The New Testament notion of the incarnation – "the Word of God," is inescapably centered on the idea that God has formed alliance between His divinity and humanity in order to provide reconciliation for humankind. The inseparability or unification of the two natures of Christ (fully human/fully God) is the bridge by which Christ apprehends the Priestly office. Barth hopes to underscore that the act of God's self–disclosure is the actual person of Jesus Christ. The Word Written: For Barth, the written Word can never stand alone as the impartation of knowledge about God, it must always be assumed in the context of relationship. Revelation is thus understood mainly as the communication of a relationship between the spiritual Word and the physical world. The Word written is not simply a collection of personal religious intentions, expressions, and understandings. Barth does not view the written Word as religious views, but as an objective event where Christ is the subject of the revelation. Old Yeller Abstract When people think of the book or the movie, Old Yeller, it is often thought of as a story about the bond between a boy and his dog, a common theme in many TV shows and books. However, Old Yeller, as it turns out, proves to be much more than that; it is a true coming–of–age story. At 14 years old, Travis Coates lives with his mother and little brother, Arliss, in the hill country of Texas during the 1860s when his father must leave home to work on a cattle drive. He leaves Travis to "act a man's part" and take care of the family in his absence. He needs to take on the rolf of a man. He has many conflicting roles to deal with– disciplinarian to his younger brother, Arliss, only to get scolded by his mother for doing so which leaves him feeling there is no winning because of the conflict caused by assuming so many roles– boy, playmate, man, and protector. These conflicts frustrate Travis who thought it was not fair and thinks to himself, "how could I be the man of the family if nobody paid any attention to what I thought or said...I sulked and felt sorry for myself all the time...[and] the more I thought of it the angrier I at got at that big yeller dog." (Gibson 1956). Travis feels offended, too, that Lisbeth turns out to be a big help. She helps by getting the water and gathering the corn, and has a good time laughing with Mama and Arliss. There is much to commend in his book as Engen asks the church to become in fact what it is by faith, a marvelous statement. Further insights come from statistical analysis, probing questions of eccesiology directed at questioning if we superimpose ourselves in areas of polity, form, structure or tradition upon the cultures we reach. I agree completely that making cosmetic changes or restructuring the denomination may not translate into crossing barriers from church to non church for the sake of the gospel. In depression era America, no greater truth could be said. There were millions unemployed, largely unskilled and living on the margins of society. The lowest of the low were the migrant labourers travelling from place to place trying to scratch a living. They often had to travel illegally by freight car with all its consequent dangers. Their life expectancy was low, crime was rampant and despair was a fellow traveller. This is the setting of John Steinbeck 's, ‘Of Mice and Men '. The novel explores the predatory nature of human existence. It explores loneliness, isolation and friendship. A major theme is that of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Profound Truth Oppression does not always come from the strong and powerful. In Steinbeck 's world, the weak prey on the weaker–for example, Curley 's wife threatens to have Crook 's lynched. What we can take from incidents like this is that the strength to oppress others is itself born of weakness. Economic Reality There is no doubt that this book is a critique of pure market capitalism. The alienation of the worker or the unemployed is very evident. The ethics are ‘dog eat dog '–a total lack of regard for the dignity of the human person. The struggle of Labour to regain its dignity is best exemplified in Steinbeck 's ‘In Dubious Battle '. Motifs 1. A man only world 2. The Corrupting Power of Women 3. Loneliness 4. The Human Spirit Steinbeck has been criticized for many things including the creation of ‘a mans ' world where women take a secondary place. There is no doubt but that he was influenced by the macho acting Hemingway in this regard. Women are looked on as self–serving and or dangerous, the Femme Fatale beloved of Film Noir. They tempt men to behave in ways they would otherwise not do, e.g.– Curley 's wife fulfils the dangerous flirt stereotype. Loneliness is a recurring motif in the novel. I felt there wasn't anything "possession" type in this novel. when you first read the title you would automatically think its a ghost novel but it's not. When it starts out explaining the setting it says that the story takes place in the 19th century and then you would get an idea that it'll show some type of spiritual things since it's from back in the time and it doesn't. I feel the author could have picked a better title. Third Question: The Recommendation If you are into romance, with a little adventure novel, then I would recommend this novel. This novel has a good plot structure, and it showed the narrator point of view clearly. One of the things I liked about this novel is the tone that the author used. In this novel, there were two types of tone that were used and those were an optimistic tone and a deep feelings tone. Fourth Question: Reflection Quotation (pg.301): "I cannot let you burn me up, nor can I resist you. The novella shows the relationship between the protagonists, George and Lennie, and showing how they try to achieve the American Dream by working together. This is in contrast to many of the other characters who are alone by themselves which seems to be the norm at the time of the Great Depression. The reader is able to look at how the need to have a companion is portrayed by Steinbeck, especially during the harsh economic times that the story is set in. The reliance that George and Lennie have on one another is able to emphasise on how it is only the friendship between the two of them which allows them to survive. This is also able to highlight the true friendship which is separated at the end which also brings an end to the novella. Thus the need for companionship, which is shown by other characters that are victimised within society, is emphasised as other strive for what George and Lennie have. Throughout the book Steinbeck uses many characters to emphasize a message which he wants to get across to the reader. This is how the importance of being able to share a friend was vital during the 1930's as it was the time of the Depression era and everyone always needed someone else to be with. • 53. Writing Against Death in The Floating Opera Essay Writing Against Death in The Floating Opera In the opening chapter of The Floating Opera, Todd Andrews makes an observation that storytelling is not his cup of tea, because digressions are impossible to contain, and that makes it hard for him to concentrate on a particular line of narration; every image he creates breeds other images, words bring about other words, there being no end to "new figures and new chases" (Barth 2). This remark suggests that Todd's existence is, indeed, confined to the reality he forges by telling his tale; this fictitious reality regenerates itself. The tone of the passage also implies that Todd enjoys not a little the unprecedented freedom this realm allows to digress at will, chasing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Dennis Martin points out, their is a question how conscious Todd is of the distinction between history and the invented past (31). Todd's reference to his reading may well validate the argument that a good deal of the story, if not all of it, is pure fiction. Todd's motives for creating his tale are directly related to the relationship between fact and artifact in his writing in his life. He is unreliable as a narrator not only because the facts of his story are suspect; he would fictionalize any event. Todd's mind is purely aesthetic; according to Thomas LeClair, life to him is "a fiction to be created"(719). It is most noteworthy that even in extreme situations (losing his virginity, if it may be regarded as such, or fighting in the front line in World War I), when reality is brutally tangible, Todd Andrews is still able to observe himself "objectively," maintain the detachment which is so essential to a writer. In other words, it is not the fact of his experience that is important to him, but rather the artifact (LeClair 720): his mind is not as much into the situations he goes through, but is rather set on his account of them. But why does Todd Andrews embrace aesthetization of life? A clue to that could be the the argument of Charles Harris, who brings up the the mind–body split in Todd Andrews––the phenomenon, as he ... • 55. Essay about The Symbol of the Heart in The Floating Opera The Symbol of the Heart in The Floating Opera The heart is the dominant symbol in The Floating Opera, more important even than the symbol of the showboat of the novel's title. From beginning to end the book is richly populated by references to the heart on both a literal, physical level, and a figurative, symbolic one. In the first case, literal references are made to Todd's heart condition. In the second case, the heart plays two symbolic roles; not only does it serve as a symbol of Todd's emotional and non–rational side, but the frailty of Todd's heart serves as a correlative for the fragility of all human life. This paper will examine several examples from The Floating Opera that demonstrate this multi–levelled usage of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This example is typical of the double nature of the heart in the work. One of the most striking and sustained examples of the heart's dual function is found in the chapter, "A raison de coeur". Here Todd explains his reasons for paying his hotel bill and reregistering every day. Todd says, "I have an excellent reason for not doing so, but it is a raison de coeur, if I may say so – a reason of the heart and not of the head."4 In one sense, Todd's decision is prompted by the physical reality of his medical circumstance; he writes, "Each soft beat my sick heart beat might be my sick heart's last"5, and also: "Having begun this sentence, I may not live to write its end ... having poured my drink, I may not live to taste it ... [or it] may pass a live man's tongue to burn a dead man's belly ... having slumbered I may never wake ... having waked, may never living sleep – this for thirty–five years has been the condition of my existence, the great fact of my life."6 This is a clear example of the two–fold nature of the heart in the book. Not only is the physical impact of Todd's heart malady emphasised, but the role of his ailed heart as a symbol for the weakness and uncertainty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Analysis Of Perfection Wasted By John Updike What We Lose Through Death of Others An Explication of John Updike's "Perfection Wasted" This poem dramatizes the conflict between losing someone's personality through death and the magic within our own separate worlds. In the poem personality is the most important part of life because it cannot be replicated by any person in the world because every person's personality is different and unique in its own way. The personality that is shown in the poem is that the speaker is happy and full of magic. John Updike uses this poem to tell a story through mostly imagery. The impression I received throughout the entire poem is the cycle of life. The author of this poem, John Updike was born on March 18, 1932 and died on January 27, 2009. He was influenced by several different people such as: William Shakespeare, James Joyce, Marcel Proust, John Barth, and many other people. One of his famous quotes that I like is "[d]reams come true; without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them." John Updike wrote many different things. He wrote short stories, poems, and novels. John Updike's inspiration came from all over. All of the people that inspired him came from different places. The main theme in this poem is that one's ways or personality cannot be remade by someone. People can imitate what a person does or how a person acts, but they will never be able to replicate it one hundred percent. The speaker in this poem talks about how when someone dies their personality will be lost forever because it cannot be reperformed by someone else, not even their closest friends or family members. "Imitators and descendants aren't the same." (Line 14) A person can be near someone for twenty–four hours a day, seven days a week, fifty–two weeks in a year and still not be them exactly. When someone dies, there will be glimpses of them in others that they have touched through their actions, but they will never fully see them in just one single person. They work on making the most perfect personality for themselves throughout their entire life just to see that when they die it dies with them. When someone works this hard on something they do not want it to end. They make people happy by using it, they help people by using ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many have attempted to understand and embrace the enigma of election presented in the bible. It is important to realize that there are many views pertaining to the doctrine of election ranging from prominent theologians such as Augustine and Pelagius, Calvin and Arminius, Barth and Brunner and various other theologians and their respective counterparts. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He presents the theology of election as a focus on the predestination choice God made to be who He is for humanity. This God does by God electing God the only begotten Son of the eternal God to be substitute atonement for the humanity and then electing an elected man who is the true Adam that is Christ Jesus. Barth presents the election done by the Triune Godhead in divine freedom to be for the humanity which reveals a beyond comprehension and unmeasurable grace and love of God towards humanity. Thus Jesus Christ is both the electing God and also the elected man. Barth portrays Jesus Christ as the great pleasure and will of God in force beyond realization. Barth declares that "the doctrine of election is of God electing man predestined not only of man but also of Himself." Jesus Christ is not purely the unveiling of the enigma of God. Jesus is the very thing concealed in the heart of God, and the revelation is of Jesus Christ Himself not anything else. Jesus is the elector God who is active in electing all of humanity in Himself. Barth's concept of the doctrine of election is the totality of the Scriptures and the anchor from whence understanding God from a finite perspective becomes possible. Barth argues that an applicable doctrine of election must have its foundation on Jesus Christ who is the revelation of God to the humanity. • 61. Essay on James Joyce's Araby Setting in James Joyce's Araby In the opening paragraphs of James Joyce's short story, "Araby," the setting takes center stage to the narrator. Joyce tends carefully to the exquisite detail of personifying his setting, so that the narrator's emotions may be enhanced. To create a genuine sense of mood, and reality, Joyce uses many techniques such as first person narration, style of prose, imagery, and most of all setting. The setting of a short story is vital to the development of character. In the opening paragraph, North Richmond Street is introduced as "blind," and "quiet", yet on it rests another house which is unoccupied. The narrator states that the house is, "Detached," from the others on the street, but that, "The other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This image can be evidenced in the rosy cheeks of warm bodies on a cold night. So many parents can attest, raising an adolescent, is mostly to watch them run through life with blinders on. When Joyce applies personification to the setting, he creates the mood of the story, and directs the reader to the double meanings found in the personified setting. As an example of mood, winter brings with it the connotation of impending gloom, as the narrator claims, "...the houses had grown sombre...the lamps of the street lifted their feeble lanterns" (379). This idea of Winter casts itself as the mood, where the feeling of awkward introspection is predominant. The lamps like the people of Dublin, have grown weary of there own, during Ireland's own battle with identity. In the broader scope of Joyce's imagery for the short story, it may be said Ireland itself is like the adolescent struggling to find its way. Joyce's messages of "complacency" during the tremendous social and political upheaval are encapsulated in the stories like "Araby," that collectively represent the book "Dubliners." The double meanings of the description of the physical setting illustrate the finer tuned details of the character. The narrator describes the "wild" garden behind his house containing a "central" apple– tree, perhaps suggesting that within the chaos in life some things remain central and focused. She built a pants making company and stopped relying on her friends. Although she did not realize that she was not moving until Shug announced that "Us leaving... Celie is coming to Memphis with me" (199), Celie was grateful for leaving her husband and the toxicity of the environment. She learned to fend for herself and reflected on her past. By having free time to come to terms with all the experiences she had, Celie understood that they helped her build character and influenced her decision to stand up for herself. 2. I was surprised when Celie denounced God and her religion for part of the novel. I felt like she would have been angry, but still continued to write to him. Because religion is a large part of the South and is ingrained into her, I assumed that she would forgive him more. When she wrote, "I don't write to God no more... [God] act just like all the other mens I know. Trifling, forgitful, and lowdown" (192), I was torn between pitying her and applauding her. Revolutionary Characters By Gordan Wood Abdiaces Mahamed Johnathan Barth History to 1865 10/15/17 Revolutionary Characters Review In the book Revolutionary Characters by Gordan Wood, the degree in which he portrays the personality and personal philosophies that informed the politics of these early American leaders, especially Thomas Jefferson, shows that contrary to popular belief that these men were not some unflawed perfect beings, but they are just like us with their many fears and insecurities. These flaws appear in all of the founding fathers and this adds a level of realism to them. It also shows that flaws are a part of human nature. Wood says that Jefferson and Hamilton embody the "democratic world of progress, Providence and innumerable isolated but equal individuals, there could be little place for the kind of extraordinary political and intellectual leadership the revolutionary generation had demonstrated," and that these men had "politeness, taste, sociability, learning, compassion, and benevolence–and what it meant to be good political leaders" (22). On the other hand was Burr who was demonized for his selfish actions in this book. Wood says he embodied "what most American politicians would eventually become – pragmatic, get–along men." This clear bias for these historical figures made me think that this book had little nuance and expertise to offer. It was more of a simple and breezy version of history. There are far too many definite answers of almost every character on the book. For example, there's an excerpt about Washington that really encapsulates the bias and simple lack of nuance Wood put into his book. He says "Washington was truly a great man and the greatest president we ever had" (35). This showed some blatant favoritism and also him including his opinions in his book as historical fact really derailed the story for me. • 67. The Importance Of A Child 's Social Development From... INTRO As a young child it is vital to have an attached relationship with your primary caregivers. John Bowlby ––– a British psychologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst, who specializes in child development ––– introduced a theory that attached relationships allow emotional support and comfort for infants, only if the caregiver is in the child's life for a long enough periods of time (Susskind, 1). He was the first person to explore the idea of the attachment theory. Parents, siblings, and peers all play a big role in a child's social development from infancy through adulthood (Susskind, 1). If these relationships are constantly disrupted from people being removed from the child's life, children will typically have a harder time forming good social behaviors and relationships. While some people grew up without stable caregivers from a young age can grow into adults with completely normal social behaviors, ultimately, children from these situations tend to have a harder time forming proper social behaviors and friendships in adulthood. Therefore it's necessary for kids to have stable relationships with their parental figures or primary guardians from a young age in order to form their own relationships in the future. Social development is affected by many different factors. Firstly, parenting styles are one of the biggest effects on socio–development, mainly because it is so prominent in a child's life from infancy through adulthood. But, doubt that Christ in tradition was different from the actual Christ created a shift from metaphysical to historical Christology. Greetings Andre, In regards to Christology from above, I agree that Faith in Christ is not contingent on rational proof. It seems absurd to me that theologians have tried to isolate and separate the proclamation of Christ from the historical account of His life as well as regarding the Book of John over the Synoptic Gospels for study. (Erickson, 608) Christology from below asserts the need to study the kerygma with the historical record and to approach them in the same way as ordinary history and Wolfhart Pannenberg's conclusion of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ had enough proof to be considered historical fact. Erickson's Augustinian approach purports this model begins with faith, but it does not remain autonomous of reason. He proposes that faith and reason can work in conjunction on the concept that the more understanding the researcher receives toward the kerygmatic Christ, the more he will appreciate and incorporate additional historical research. • 77. Candide Character Analysis Discuss the female characters in Candide. Are they victims, or natural survivors? Do they deserve more pity or more admiration? Take one side only. In Voltaire's Candide, there is a young fellow that falls in love with a lady. She is kidnapped and the protagonist, Candide, embarks on a journey to find his love. I believe that he doesn't really love this young lady, Cunegonde, he is in love with her looks (or is in lust, if you will). We discover that he really doesn't love her at the end of the novel, but they still marry. The other female characters have similar backstories and are also seen as a body of desire. The only one that is not seen this way is an old woman. Regardless of age, all of the women have issues or tragic lives. I pity these people that have to live in a position that is seen as inferior to the majority of men. While I pity them, I also see how strong they are, and what they have endured in their lifespan. A character that is deserving of pity is Cunegonde. Cunegonde came from a line of high ranking people who are killed later in the novel. She was also kidnapped and raped by Bulgarians. She had to have sex with two men that were sharing her. When Candide finds her for the first time, the only thing that he cares about is how beautiful she is. He sees her and immediately believes that he is in love with her. Later on, in the novel, Candide finds her once again. This time though, she is old and hasn't aged well. Candide marries her and makes it known to the reader that it wasn't out of love, it was out of pity. I believe that this character is deserving of more pity, because no one deserves to go through the things that she has. No one took the time to get to know her. Candide didn't really care that much about her when he saw that she wasn't beautiful anymore. Pacquette is a character that deserves pity because her life was great until she started having sex with Pangloss and gave him syphilis. As a result, she ran out of money and became broke and she had no other option but to resort to prostitution. On Candide's journey to find Cunegonde he lands in Venice with martin and recognizes Pacquette and felt pity for her and he gave her a generous amount of money. "Candide gave two thousand ... Essay about Features of Post Modern Fictions Some of the dominant features of postmodern fictions include temporal disorder, the erosion of the sense of time, a foregrounding of words as fragmenting material signs, a pervasive and pointless use of pastiche, loose association of ideas, paranoia and the creation of vicious circles or a loss of destination between separate levels of discourse, which are all symptoms of the language disorders of postmodernist fictions. The postmodern novel may be summed up as: Late modernism. Anti–modernism. Not avant–garde tendency (may be avant–garde within a literary period). Emphasizes plot than character. Its function is disillusionary; it dives into the underside of fiction and explodes its fallacies...Postmodernist text directs itself to the suspension of meaning by using disruptive narrative, polyphony, multiple ending and the like thereby frustrating intelligibility. It is devoid of teleology and causality (12). Some critics are of the view that postmodern fictions do not convey any moral values and imparts untrue elements. "In a postmodern word, literature is just another text.
