Editor's Notes
In other words: Their love is like gold beaten to the thinness of air – their two souls have expanded into one soul.(John Donne was a metaphysical poet: British lyric poets of the 17th century, whose work was characterized by the inventive use of metaphor, and by writing about love or religion.)
Cyrus’s Custom Cabinets and Carpentry, Cyrus Blanchard and Son, Prop. (Answer: page 7)
Vanni is halfIrish, half Indian. She loves to write. When she speaks, she’s very confident. She is very skilled in the art of insulting people and is the only person to have ever stood up to Mr. Locheed. She is in love with Jake. You can’t say: “My name is Vanni,” “I’m half Irish, half Indian,” “I like to write,” “I like Jake, “My nose is huge” etc.
Jake Blanchard:The main character of the novel, Jake has a true passion for screenwriting. Since he works for his father, who is a carpenter, he is skilled in woodworking. Sometimes he can be shy, especially around Alba - who he has a crush on. He can be self-conscious about how others see him, but he is very comfortable with his friends Instant and Vanni. You can’t say: “My name is Jake,” “Mr. and Mrs. Blanchard are my parents,” “I want to be a screenwriter,” “I love Alba” etc.
Instant:Instant is Jake’s best friend. In school, he is considered intelligent because he can answer questions in an instant. This is due to his eidetic (or photographic) memory, which means he can memorize anything. However, he doesn’t always understand the things he memorizes. He is a musician at the arts school and plays tenor saxophone. You can’t say: “My name is Instant,” “I am Jake’s friend,” “I have a photographic memory” etc.
Mr. Cyrus Blanchard: He is Jake’s dad as well as a carpenter. He owns his own woodworking business and wanted Jake to join in as well. During the story, he gets a heart-attack and is sent to the hospital. Mr. Blanchard is a strong person who wants the best for Jake. You can’t say: “I am Jake’s dad”, “My name is Mr. Blanchard” etc . . .
Romeo and Juliet: This is one of the most famous plays written by William Shakespeare. This is a tragic love story about how 2 lovers, Romeo and Juliet, cannot be together because their families are enemies. At the end, Romeo poisons himself and Juliet stabs herself. You can’t say: “I am Juliet/Romeo, I love Juliet/Romeo.” etc . . . .

Blue note restaurant (vegetarian restaurant?)
Alba was the girl that Jake crushed on for most of the story. She is described as one of the beautiful, popular girls with strawberry-blonde hair. At the beginning, Alba really liked Chad and dated him as well. She applied to the arts school as an actress and played Juliet in the play, Romeo and Juliet. You can’t say: “My name is Alba”, “I like to act”, “Jake likes me” etc . . . .
Chad is who Alba liked for most of the story. Just like Alba, he wants to be an actor, and is very popular with the girls at school. Chad goes out with Alba, but ends up cheating on her with another girl. He played Romeo in the play, Romeo and Juliet. You can’t say: “I’m Chad.”, “Alba liked me.”, “I am an actor.”, “All the girls think I’m hot.” etc . . . .
Vanni is half Irish and half Indian. You can’t say: “I am half Irish and half Indian.” etc . . . .You can use accents.
Ms. Pelletier – The Principal of The York School of the Arts: The principal made an appearance at the beginning of the book when she interviewed Jake for enrollment. Page Reference: 7Hint: After Jake’s dad paints this on his van, Jake finally realizes that he has to tell his parents the truth about him becoming a screenplay writer.
Bogey is the hard-boiled, cool, ‘hero’ from the movie, Casablanca, one of the classic movies Jake likes best. In the story, Jake wrote a screenplay about himself going into a bar and meeting Bogey, asking him for advice on what he should do about Alba. You can’t say: “My name is Bogey.”etc . . . .
