The REALITY is that the construction industry has been declining in productivity. This is creating waste which should be of concern as it is a $500B problem that can be traced back to two root causes inefficiency and bad behaviour.
How we fix the inefficiency is relatively straight forward as there are proven lean strategies that have enable the transformation of whole industries. Fixing the bad behaviour on the other hand take a paradigm shift in thinking, process and culture as most organizations are wired the low price is the law mentality. When we look as the pitfalls of the current system it provides the basis for WHY, HOW and WHAT we need to change.
The Three Main PITFALLS… No clear Target…. Low Price Team…. Non Productive Work Practices
2. In 2007, US Construction was estimated at $1.288 TRILLION and if the building SMART
ALLIANCE is right, 50% of it is waste. That means we waste $500B annually.
Shame on Us!
The Money Pit
3. And some REALLY BAD Behavior
The Money Pit can be attributed to ……
50% inefficiency
4. The Fix is Simple…. We need to adopt a LEAN and
more Integrated Project Delivery Process and…
This video describes a lean and more integrated way to deliver projects that is having a HUGE impact on our industry

5. …… fix BAD Behavior!
Yes if we understand what is EXPECTED, have a COMMITMENT to a better PROCESS and have a SYSTEM to manage it.
If one of these is missing you will run the RISK of reverting back to the OLD ways!
7. I thought we were all hired to do Integrated Project Delivery?
This is not enough you need a signed Manifesto or a Multi-party Agreement
8. A Manifesto can prevent this from happening!

9. We also need a SYSTEM to manage constraint free work
10. These two organization have adopted this SYSTEM to
achieve much higher levels of performance!

Living Building Challenge Project #2
As leaders in the community it is our duty to protect the planet and demonstrate that
triple bottom line economics work. For our second Living Building Challenge project,
we have adopted Integrated Project Delivery to raise the bar even higher as we want
less cost, less time and to be fully commissioned at substantial completion.

12. For our project we wanted to demonstrate to that triple bottom line economics work for
commercial real estate. We are on target to deliver the Mosaic Centre to the highest level of
sustainability as defined by Living Building Challenge for approximately the same cost as a
traditional build.
Our return on investment will be in the productivity of our people, recognition as good stewards of
the planet and from the financial benefits of having higher occupancy and no energy bills.
