he is still grateful for this opportunity because
it got him away from the sometimes violent
neighborhood he grew up in.

Mel Steele of Boston was a police officer in the Gang Unit. The Gang Unit
is in charge of keeping tabs on gang activity in the Boston area. Steele, as
a member of the Gang Unit, showed unusual courage in his attempts to
create better opportunities for the city’s youth. While he was a police
