Language amidst the Changes
(The different issues of English Language in Education)
As we step forward to the new millennium, it is important to consider where we are
now and what lies ahead. As educators, we need to take into account the implications that
social and technological change may have for the practice of language teaching, and to see
our work in the context of such change so that, as educators we may be able to contribute
to the creation of the social world which we hope for.
As we all know, English is the language that has spread throughout the world most
extensively and is most dominating in a number of important fields including international
commerce, education, and communication. The Philippines have included English in the
school curriculum in recognition that it can contribute to students’ personal, linguistic, social
and cultural development.
However, as years passed by, there are certain issues facing by both students and
teachers in English Language Education. One of these is the Local Nativization of English
which is noted as a concern in the country because it can lower the effectiveness of
communication or lead to a communication breakdown in the global community. Some of
the students cannot express their selves while speaking English that’s why most of the
2. English Teachers do not instruct English in English in order for the students to comprehend
the lesson. Another key problem is the refining and securing qualified English teachers, and
teacher training in the country. Because of the lack of teachers in some areas in the
Philippines, some DepEd Schools hired teachers who are not qualified to teach English. The
teachers then accept the job items because of the hardships they have been through during
the ranking process. And at the end, the students suffer from this inefficacy and
ineffectiveness of the English Teachers.
Mastering the language is still an issue for many students, especially from rural areas,
despite learning it since the beginning of schooling. Students fail to master English because
of distinctive life background and different level of proficiency. When students’ performance
in English declines as early as at elementary level, it is not surprising that their performance
will continue declining as they move to high schools and beyond.
It is evident that the emergence of English language has brought many changes in
the ways in which the English language is perceived and used. Now that the power is with us
brought by the modern technology, what we need is an open and positive mindset to cope
with that changes. We need to work hand-in-hand full of collaboration to widen our
perspective on solving the different issues in English Language Education. Being open to
changes would lead us to excellence.
