On November 4, 2012, the U.S. Navy had over 584,000 active duty and reserve personnel serving. There were 287 active ships, with 108 underway away from homeports, including the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise returning from its final deployment. The Navy was also providing disaster relief support in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy through ships, equipment, and personnel.

On Nov. 4, 318,406 active duty officers, Sailors and midshipmen; 64,715 Selected
Reserve Sailors, with 4,507 mobilized Reserves; and 201,622 civilians are serving in the
Department of the Navy.
There are 287 active ships in service; 108 (38%) ships, including six aircraft carriers and
six large-deck amphibious ships are underway away from homeport.
Aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) returns to its homeport of Norfolk following an
eight-month deployment to the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility conducting
maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and missions in support
of Operation Enduring Freedom. This was the carrier's 25th and final deployment in her
51 years of distinguished service.
Friends and family cheer as the guided-missile destroyer USS James E. Williams (DDG
95) returns to Naval Station Norfolk after completing a deployment to the U.S. 5th and
6th Fleet areas of responsibility as part of the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group.
USNS Big Horn (T-AO 198) and USNS Robert E. Peary (T-AKE 5) are in port Norfolk
after returning with the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group, following a seven-and-a-half-
month deployment in support of operations in the Mediterranean and the Arabian Seas.
The Navy provides disaster relief in support of Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA), national and local authorities in the New York and New Jersey areas affected
by Hurricane Sandy. USS Wasp (LHA 1), USS San Antonio (LPD 17), and USS Carter
Hall (LSD 50) are in position, supplying military personnel and equipment to disaster
areas. The Secretary of Defense also authorized the Navy to provide 30 pumps, 125
Sailors and 30 civilians to support dewatering efforts.
Navy Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 11 provides a convoy of 23 vehicles and
90 Seabees to assist with disaster relief efforts. Their equipment includes 13 generators
and seven pumps.
Sailors from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 2 remove water at the lower
levels of the World Trade Center. MDSU 2 is working closely with state officials and
FEMA in disaster response.
Coastal Riverine Squadron (CORIVRON) 4 Sailors work at the Hoboken ferry terminal
in support of hurricane relief efforts. CORIVRON 4 is working closely with state
officials and FEMA.
2. USNS Kanawha (T-AO 196) is providing logistics support to USS Wasp (LHA 1), USS
San Antonio (LPD 17) and USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) as they assist FEMA, national and
local authorities in the New York and New Jersey areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which roared ashore in New Jersey on Oct. 29,
Naval Weapons Station Earle personnel continued cleanup and recovery operations,
ensuring the Station returned to full operational capability in a matter of days.
The Navy element of the Office of Security Cooperation-Iraq trains Iraqi Sailors on the
.50 cal machine guns, the M240B machine guns and the Swift Patrol Boat 30 mm gun
weapon system. In addition, the Navy element provided underway tactical training on
Iraqi Defender boats that provide waterway and oil platform security.
USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) conducts flight operations, as HMS Diamond
(D34) and USS Hue City (CG 66) provide air and surface support while operating in the
U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
USS Nimitz (CVN 68), USS Sampson (DDG 102) and USS Sterett (DDG 104) are
underway in the Pacific Ocean conducting a Composite Training Unit Exercise
(COMPTUEX). COMPTUEX is an intermediate-level battle group exercise designed to
prepare the battle group for deployment. Successfully completing the COMPTUEX
certifies the carrier and its air wing as qualified and ready for open ocean operations.
USNS Grapple (T-ARS 53) is moored off the coast of Calvi, Corsica, with an embarked
team of Joint Prisoners of War, Missing in Action Accounting Command (JPAC)
specialists and divers from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2, as they prepare to
excavate an American lost in a B-17 crash in 1944.
Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert helps unfurl a giant U.S. flag during
a NFL military appreciation game where the New York Giants hosted the Pittsburgh
Steelers. The NFL chose November to honor the military with their "Salute to Service"
campaign, highlighting service members' contributions to our nation.
The U.S. Navy flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels, salute the colors during a
change of command ceremony at the National Aviation Museum on Naval Air Station
Pensacola. Cmdr. Tom Frosch relieved Capt. Greg McWherter as commanding officer
and flight leader of the Blue Angels team following the conclusion of the 2012 air show
season.
