“Today everyone has so much more knowledge than people 2 or 3 hundred years ago. But, we are not any happier. To have or know a lot of knowledge is of no value if you can’t use it for your daily life. Thus it is useless for us to know Buddha’s teachings without putting them into practice.”

ZEN DISCIPLINE
IN SHORINJI KEMPO
The danger of Shorinji Kempo boiling down to a sophisticated martial art was foreseen by Kaiso Doshin So. Sensei Kirtie speaks of Kaiso’s strict emphasis to keep it as Zen discipline.
CORRECT ATTITUDE
2. SHORINJI KEMPO 1975
SHORINJI KEMPO INDIA
Up to around 1975, Shorinji Kempo in Japan used to have yearly competitions for Randori and Embu. So doshin finally banned all Randori competitions between dojos. This is because of the attitude that was being developed in the mind of the competitors.
One of the main themes of Shorinji Kempo is to develop ourselves by mutual respect and support. Because of our nature it is impossible to compete against other clubs without trying our best to win often at all costs.
Further, competitions emphasized people to develop techniques which are designed to solely gain points.
The fact that people get killed in such competitions is inevitable.
However, So Doshin’s ban was only between clubs – he didn’t ban Randori altogether.
This means we should still practice Randori within each club, but it is important to do it with the right attitude.
This is to practice learning and improving one’s technique and also that of your partner who acts as your opponent.
You should not have any idea of winning or injuring your opponent.
3. MIZUNO TELLS THE STORY
SHORINJI KEMPO INDIA
One of Doshin So’s stories was about a famous Chinese mayor who upon becoming mayor, seeked out a Buddhist monk to ask what were the teachings of Buddha and Zen philosophy.
The monk said ‘Thou shalt not commit evil, but thou shalt commit thyself to the pursuit of good and purify thine heart, for these are the teachings of the Buddha.’
The mayor had expected to hear some deep sayings or meanings and replied that, that was easy to understand and that even a small child knew that.
The monk replied that that was so but, most people find it impossible to carry it out. Realizing that this was true, the mayor apologized and tried to enact this in his life.
Sensei Mizuno went on to say that: “Today everyone has so much more knowledge than people 2 or 3 hundred years ago. But, we are not any happier. To have or know a lot of knowledge is of no value if you can’t use it for your daily life. Thus it is useless for us to know Buddha’s teachings without putting them into practice.”

6. CORRECT ORDER
It is important to learn techniques in the order as per the syllabus. This is because many complicated techniques depend on you mastering more basic techniques, which are then combined, adapted or built on to a higher form. Also some hard techniques (i.e. Gyaku gote) are started early because of the long time required before one can use them effectively.

7. BASIC TRAINING
This is very important and no matter what grade you are, you will always need to do basic training. Apart from being usually the most useful and effective it is by regularly training at your basics, you develop a feel of your body and technique, which is essential for learning higher techniques.
