SAFETY
FIRST
All accident has a cost connected with it and that is why it is significant to stress safety
on and off the job. And these involves both direct and indirect cost; however the
employee who was injured will be the one who pays the most.
The Cost of an Accident
Direct Costs
– Lost wages and overtime
– Doctor and hospital bills
Indirect Costs
– Physical pain and suffering
– Mental anguish
– Lost time with family and friends
– Loss of productivity on and off the job
– Relationship strain
Direct Costs for the
– Medical bills and workers’ compensation claims
– Legal & Insurance costs
– Property damage costs
Indirect Costs for the Employer
– Loss of a valued employee
– Loss of productivity
– Replacing the lost worker (e.g. hiring and training)
– Damage to equipment or tools

SAFETY
FIRST
 A hazard is the potential or a chance of being injured or
harmed
 A presence of Danger
 In practical terms, a hazard often is associated with a
condition or activity that, if left uncontrolled, can result in an
injury or illness.
What is a hazard?
The purpose of this training is for us to know how
to identify these hazards and provide solutions on how to
eliminate or control them as early as possible in order to
help prevent injuries and illnesses.

SAFETY
FIRST
Machinery, its parts, tools, objects and materials processed or
used in the work process are often a source of mechanical hazards
leading to injuries. Mechanical hazards are created by the powered
operation of apparatus or tools. The applied power may be electrical or
human. Tools or apparatus have three locations where mechanical
hazards can exist:
 the point of operation
 the point of power transmission
 the area of moving parts
Mechanical hazards

MINIBOSH.022411.MaximoGinezIII–mxginez3@yahoo.com
SAFETY
FIRST
Electrical hazards
Machinery, along with power supply systems, can also create
electrical hazards, leading to severe or fatal accidents caused by electric
shocks. All of the following are electrically energized when the power is
“on”: electrical systems of machines, internal & external circuits, input
power exposed wires, and all other metal parts. Additionally, incorrectly
installed or improperly grounded equipment is a hazard. Electrical
hazards are created by the electrically powered operation of apparatus
or tools which can be identified:
 short circuit or grounded wiring on a machine
 electric power transmission
 exposed wiring (lived wire)

MINIBOSH.022411.MaximoGinezIII–mxginez3@yahoo.com
SAFETY
FIRST
A chemical hazard arises from contamination of an area with
harmful or potentially harmful chemicals. Possible sources of chemical
hazards include the burning of fossils, materials and chemicals used in
construction and industry, pollution of the environment and water
supply, chemical spillages, industrial accidents, and the deliberate
release of toxic materials.

SAFETY
FIRST
Environmental hazard' is a generic term for any situation
or state of events which poses a threat to the surrounding
environment. This term incorporates topics like pollution and
natural disasters such as storms and earthquakes.
 Soil erosion / Land Slides
 Falling rocks / Hanging walls
 Heavy rain causing Flood (Storm)
 Earthquake
 Quick sand / clayey surface / swamp

SAFETY
FIRST
Biological hazards, also known as biohazards, refer to
biological substances that pose a threat to the health of living
organisms, primarily that of humans. Which can be inhaled,
swallowed or contact with the skin. The term and its associated
symbol is generally used as a warning, so that those potentially
exposed to the substances will know to take precautions.

FIRST
Ensure that workers use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing
that the company requires to be used or worn and that it is in good condition.
Ensure that workers receive appropriate training to use or wear the equipment,
protective devices or clothing that the company requires.
Establish procedures and practices to ensure that workers can carry out safe
and healthy work.
Ensure that workers comply with the company’s safety policy and program.
Ensure that workers are aware of potential hazards and have dealt with, or are
dealing with, the actual hazards in the workplace.
Plan and communicate work assignments to enable workers to produce safety.
Involve workers in work planning and problem solving.
Provide orientation to new crew members.
What to do now as a Deputized Inspector?
SAFETY AND HEALTH DEPARTMENT
MINIBOSH.022411.MaximoGinezIII–mxginez3@yahoo.com
SAFETY
FIRST
Conduct weekly safety talks and weekly site inspections.
Review safety aspects of each task with crew.
Conduct accident or incident investigation.
Encourage workers to report health and safety problems
Respond quickly and appropriately to worker concerns and cooperate in their
correction. Take matter to higher level if beyond supervisor’s authority/ability.
Report safety problems to middle management.
Be aware of the applicable company procedures.
Set an example by being consistently safety conscious, and insisting on the
safe performance of work.
Observe the work in progress and provide positive input to the workers.

FIRST
It takes a Minute to write a safety rule
It takes an Hour to hold a safety meeting
It takes a Week to plan a safety program
It takes a Month to put it in practice
It takes a Year to win a safety award
It takes a Lifetime to make a safe worker
But it only takes a Second
To destroy it all in one accident.
