4. Marriage and the
Afterlife•
Marriages were thought to be
eternal so the
ancient Egyptians placed
emphasis on selecting a
compatible life partner. The
prospect of reuniting with one's
spouse in the afterlife was
thought to ease the pain of his or
her passing. (Book of
Breathings)
5. Is there evidence for eternal
marriage anciently?
•
The pseudepigraphic Joseph and
Aseneth 15:6 has a heavenly
messenger telling Aseneth, "Behold,
I have given you today to Joseph for
a bride, and he himself will be your
bridegroom, forever (and) ever." In a
later passage, the Egyptian king tells
Joseph "Behold, is not this one
betrothed to you since eternity? And
shall be your wife from now on and
forever (and) ever?" (Joseph and
Aseneth 21:3).
6. Is there evidence for eternal
marriage anciently?
•
Pharaoh then tells Asenth, "justly the Lord, the God of Joseph,
has chosen you as a bride for Joseph, because he is the firstborn of
God. And you shall be called a daughter of the Most High and a
bride of Joseph from now and forever" (Joseph and Aseneth 21:4).

enter through this gate. [Here] the husband remains with his wife and the wife
remains with her husband'"[1]

14. The ProphetThe Prophet
Joseph Smith taught:Joseph Smith taught:
•
“For a man to lay down his all, his character and
reputation, his honor, and applause, his good name
among men, his houses, his lands, his brothers and
sisters, his wife and children, and even his own life
also—counting all things but filth and dross for the
excellency of the knowledge of Jesus Christ—
requires more than mere belief or supposition that
he is doing the will of God; but actual knowledge,
realizing that, when these sufferings are ended, he
will enter into eternal rest, and be a partaker of the
glory of God. . . .
15.
16. • “. . . A religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things
never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto
life and salvation; for, from the first existence of man, the faith
necessary unto the enjoyment of life and salvation never could be
obtained without the sacrifice of all earthly things. It was through
this sacrifice, and this only, that God has ordained that men
should enjoy eternal life; and it is through the medium of the
sacrifice of all earthly things that men do actually know that they
are doing the things that are well pleasing in the sight of God.
17. • When a man has offered in sacrifice all that he has for the truth’s
sake, not even withholding his life, and believing before God
that he has been called to make this sacrifice because he seeks
to do his will, he does know, most assuredly, that God does and
will accept his sacrifice and offering, and that he has not, nor will
not seek his face in vain. Under these circumstances, then, he
can obtain the faith necessary for him to lay hold on eternal life.
18. • “. . . It is in vain for persons to fancy to themselves
that they are heirs with those, or can be heirs with
them, who have offered their all in sacrifice, and by
this means obtained faith in God and favor with
him so as to obtain eternal life, unless they, in like
manner, offer unto him the same sacrifice, and
through that offering obtain the knowledge that
they are accepted of him. . . .
19. • “. . . From the days of righteous Abel
to the present time, the knowledge
that men have that they are accepted
in the sight of God is obtained by
offering sacrifice. . . .
20. • “. . . Those, then, who make the sacrifice, will have the
testimony that their course is pleasing in the sight of
God; and those who have this testimony will have faith
to lay hold on eternal life, and will be enabled, through
faith, to endure unto the end, and receive the crown
that is laid up for them that love the appearing of our
Lord Jesus Christ. But those who do not make the
sacrifice cannot enjoy this faith, because men are
dependent upon this sacrifice in order to obtain this
faith: therefore, they cannot lay hold upon eternal life,
because the revelations of God do not guarantee unto
them the authority so to do, and without this guarantee

•
If the hypocephalus represents the eye of God,
as explained above, what might be depicted on
it? We know that God’s focus and attention are
upon bringing to pass the immortality and eternal
life of His children (see Moses 1:39 ). It is not
strange, therefore, that the symbolic drawing of
the eye of God, as represented by Abraham
facsimile 2 , shows this great hope for all of His
children. Indeed, facsimile 2 contains figures and
explanations relating to the Lord’s plan of
salvation.

49. The Ritual Embrace
•
7. Royal: The climax and culmination of the
Coronation rites was a ritual embrace of father
and son designated as skhn, the word becoming
a terminus technicus for the Coronation itself
(J. Bergman, Isis, p. 94, n. 5). While Moret
prefers to retain the basic meaning of
"embracing," E. Anderson rendered the plural
form skhn.w as "enthronement," "installation,"
and even simply as "throne" (Sphinx, 11:26f).
50. •
The skhn-rite was taken over from the Coronation
into the funerary rites, but in either sphere it deals
with the embracing of an other-worldly father (Wb
III, 469: 11-12; Bergman, loc. cit.).
•
The word khtp also designates the ritual embrace,
and in the Book of the Dead 17:41-46, we see it
transferred from the realm of the coronation and
other rites of renewal to the funerary sphere,
according to Moret, the King, the god, and the
dead all receiving the ritual khtp-embrace at the
moment of passing to their greatest glory (Moret,
Sphinx, 11:28f). Hugh Nibley, The Message of the Joseph Smith

If the hypocephalus represents the eye of God,

75.
76. • For example, the explanations for figures 3, 7, and 8
establish a clear relationship between the contents of
facsimile 2 and the ordinances of the temple.
• President Joseph Fielding Smith taught: “Abraham

read. They cannot be revealed unto the world, but are to

83. What is so interesting is that the pieces
of the eye represent aspects of an almost
complete personality. All parts of the
eye equal 63/64ths, leaving 1/64th
unidentified. To understand the full
compass of the eye was to have the key
to eternal life. Since this symbol is
consistently identified by Joseph Smith
with the "grand key-words of the
Priesthood" we can speculate whether
the 1/64 could be what the Egyptians
regarded as the secret or sacred name of
God.
84.
85. Those possessing the secret of the eye were
believed to reach a new and higher level of
consciousness. Further possession of the eye
would determine the successor of Osiris in
the battle between Horus and Set; its
possessor would, therefore, have the right to
rule and reign in heaven. Truly this sign, the
wd-t, could appropriately represent the
"Grand Key-Words" and highest aspirations
of the priesthood.

92. What can happen in the temple March 5, 1972 at BYU
The body is a step up in the scales of
progression, not a step down. God is God
because He is gloriously embodied; and were
He not so, He would be less than God. The
privilege of the House of God is in effect to have
our physical beings brought into harmony with
our spirit personalities. And I have read, but
cannot quote perfectly, only paraphrase, the
testimony of President Lorenzo Snow to the
effect that this is the only way -
93. What can happen in the temple
I repeat, the only way - that the knowledge locked
in our spirit can become part of this flesh; Thus
occurs that inseparable union, that blending,
which makes possible celestial resurrection. It is
as if, if I may mix the figure, we are given in the
house of god a patriarchal blessing to every organ
and attribute and power of our being,
94. What can happen in the temple
a blessing that is to be fulfilled in this world and
the next, keys and insights that can enable us to
live a godly life in a very worldly world, protected-
yes, even insulated from the poisons and
distortions that are everywhere.
That is the temple. And the glory of god, his
ultimate perfection, is in his house duplicated in us
provided we go susceptible.

101. Hieratic
• Hieratic is a cursive writing system used in
pharaonic Egypt that developed alongside the
hieroglyphic system,[1]
to which it is intimately
related. It was primarily written in ink with a reed
brush on papyrus, allowing scribes to write
quickly without resorting to the time-consuming
hieroglyphs. The word hieratic derives from the
Greek phrase (γράμματα ἱερατικά grammata
hieratika; literally "priestly writing""priestly writing"),

From the Apocalypse of Abraham:
“I will ... show you (what) is in the
heavens, on the earth and in the sea, in
the abyss, and in the lower depths, in
the garden of Eden and in its rivers, in
the fullness of the universe. And you will
see its circles in all." (12:10)
105. Later, God, “the Eternal, Mighty One,”
addresses Abraham saying, “‘Look now
beneath your feet at the firmament and
understand the creation that was depicted
of old on this expanse, (and) the creatures
which are in it and the age prepared after it.’
And I looked beneath the firmament at my
feet and I saw the likeness of heaven and the
things that were therein” (21:1-2).

Returning to God’s PresenceReturning to God’s Presence
•
Egyptologists suggest that hypocephali contain
information to help deceased persons return to
the presence of God. Similarly, the Lord has
given Latter-day Saints divine help to return to
His presence. President Brigham Young taught:
“Your [temple] endowment is, to receive all those
ordinances in the house of the Lord, which are
necessary for you, after you have departed this
life, to enable you to walk back to the presence of
the Father, passing the angels who stand as
sentinels” ( Discourses of Brigham Young, 416).
145. “Holy places have always been essential to the
proper worship of God…The importance of holy
places and sacred space in our worship can
hardly be overestimated.
Great personal preparation is required for us to
receive the spiritual benefit of standing in holy
places. Holy places are distinguished by the
sacrifice they require. One may not have the
sacred without first sacrificing something for it.
There can be no sacredness without personal
sacrifice. Sacrifice sanctifies the sacred.
146. “In holy places and in sacred space we find
spiritual refuge, renewal, hope, and peace. Are
these not worth every necessary personal
sacrifice? My brethren and sisters, may each of
us revere and respect the holy and sacred in our
lives. Let us stand in holy sacred places of
spiritual peace.”

162. Facsimile 3 has always been the most
neglected of the three facsimiles in the
Book of Abraham.... This lamentable
state of affairs exists because the basic
Egyptological work on Facsimile 3 has
not been done... Furthermore, what an
ancient Egyptian understood by a
vignette and what a modern
Egyptologist understands by the same
vignette are by no means the same
thing. Until we understand what the
Egyptians understood by this scene, we
have no hope of telling whether what
Joseph Smith said about them matches
what the Egyptians thought about them.

164. As the evil night darkens on this generation, we
must come to the temple for light and safety.
Only in the house of the Lord will we find
quiet, sacred havens where the storm cannot
penetrate. There unseen sentinels watch over
us…
165. Haven of peace
Before the Savior comes the world will darken.
The time will come when even the elect will begin
to lose hope if they do not come often to the
temples. I believe the Saints will come to the
temples not only to do vicarious work but also to
find a God-given haven of peace. True and
faithful Latter-Day Saints the world over will
long to bring their children to the temple for
service and for safety. (cont.)

LDS Church News, 1997, 10/04/97
• It isn't as bad as you sometimes think it is. It all
works out. Don't worry. I say that to myself every
morning. It will all work out. If you do your best, it
will all work out. Put your trust in God and move
forward with faith and confidence in the future.
The Lord will not forsake us. He will not forsake
us, . . . if we will put our trust in Him, if we will
pray to Him, if we will live worthy of His
blessings, He will hear our prayers.-From
priesthood session, Jordan Utah South Regional
Conference, March 1, 1997

• Things will always get better if we live and love
the gospel. In my lifetime I have seen two world
wars plus Korea plus Vietnam and all that you
are currently witnessing. I have worked my way
through the depression and managed to go to
law school while starting a young family at the
same time. I have seen stock markets and world
economies go crazy and have seen a few
despots and tyrants go crazy, all of which causes
quite a bit of trouble around the world in the
process.

• So I am frank to say tonight that I hope you won't
believe all the world's difficulties have been
wedged into your decade or that things have
never been worse than they are for you
personally, or that they will never get better. I
reassure you that things have been worse and
they will always get better. They always do-
especially when we live and love the gospel of
Jesus Christ and give it a chance in our lives.

185. Why do Good People Suffer?
The Problem of Pain
But pain insists upon being attended to,
God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks
in our conscience, but shouts in our pains:
it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.
(C.S. Lewis)
186. Why do Good People Suffer?
The Problem of Pain
No doubt Pain as God's megaphone is a terrible
instrument; it may lead to final and unrepented rebellion.
But it gives the only opportunity the bad man can have for
amendment. It removes the veil; it plants the flag of truth
within the fortress of a rebel soul. If the first and lowest
operation of pain shatters the illusion that all is well, the
second shatters the illusion that what we have, whether
good or bad in itself, is our own and enough for us.
Everyone has noticed how hard it is to turn our thoughts
to God when everything is going well with us. We "have
all we want" is a terrible saying when “all" does not
include God. We find God an interruption.
187. Why do Good People Suffer?
As St. Augustine says somewhere, "God
wants to give us something, but cannot,
because our hands are full--there's nowhere
for Him to put it." Or as a friend of mine
said, "We regard God as an airman regards
his parachute; it's there for emergencies but
he hopes he'll never have to use it. Now
God who has made us, knows what we are
and that our happiness lies in Him.
188. CS Lewis
Yet we will not seek it in Him as long as He leaves us any
other resort where it can even plausibly be looked for.
While what we call "our own life" remains agreeable we
will not surrender it to Him. What then can God do in our
interests but make "our own life" less agreeable to us, and
take away the plausible sources of false happiness? It is
just here, where God's providence seems at first to be
most cruel, that the Divine humility, the stooping down of
the highest , most deserves praise. We are perplexed to see
misfortune falling upon decent, inoffensive, worthy
people--on capable, hard-working mothers of families or
diligent, thrifty little trades-people on those who have
worked so hard, and so honestly, for their modest stock of
happiness and now seem to be entering on the enjoyment
of it with the fullest right....
189. CS Lewis
Let me implore the reader to try to believe, if only for the
moment, that God, who made these deserving people,
may really be right when He thinks that their modest
prosperity and the happiness of their children are not
enough to make them blessed: that all this must fall from
them in the end, and that if they have not learned to know
Him they will be wretched. And therefore He troubles
them, warning them in advance of an insufficiency that
one day they will have to discover. The life to themselves
and their families stands between them and the
recognition of their need; He makes that life less sweet to
them.

In Lev. 8:33; 16:32; 21:10 the word "consecrate" (from Latin con- (expressing intensive force) + sacrare “dedicated, devoted as sacred” (from sacer “sacred”)--i.e., to make something sacred or devoted for God’s glory) is translated from the Hebrew male’ “to fill” + yad “hand.” In these passages, then, the word “consecrate” means literally “fill the hand” or “fill his hand,” referring to incense in the hand.
An ancient myth describes a battle between Horus and Set in which Horus´ left eye was torn.... Thoth magically restored Horus´ eye, at which point it was given the name "Wadjet" ("whole" or "healthy"). In this myth it is specifically stated that it is Horus´ left eye which has been torn out, so the myth relates to the waxing and waning of the moon during which the moon appears to have been torn out of the sky before being restored once every lunar month.
Difficulty of Egyptian. It’s one thing to read the symbols. Another to understand the religious context. The first happened during the 1800’s. But only in the 1900’s did we really begin to understand the religion of the Egyptians.
One symbol or God can represent many different things. Wadget, for example...
Where is the other 64th? Some have suggested that it is the “name of God” to be obtained in the temple, in order to come into the presence of the Gods!
