1. D1- Explain the uses and operations of different types of lighting equipment.
Unit 65 technical stage operations
Matthew Baldwin
2. Par can
Accessories:
Gel frame
Safety chain
Adjustable arm
Light bulb encased
15 amp
G-clamp
The Par can is used for aesthetic
appearance to make the staging
look pretty at music gigs. You can
make chases with these lights to
gain some depth and general
cover. You can’t control the colour
of the Par can but you can switch
the gels.
To create chases for a music gig I would use the Parcan
instead of the birdie because the Parcan gives more general
cover to add more depth with the beam angle of 70°,
whereas a birdie is produced by Halogen lights and its not as
powerful as a Parcan.
3. Led parcan
Accessories:
Gel frame
Safety chain
Adjustable arm
G-clamp
The LED Par can would be used for music
gigs and even concerts, aesthetics are used
to make the staging look pretty. This is the
same as a Par Can which gives the same
amount of general coverage but this can
change to any colour controlled by the desk.
This particular light is an energy saver which
means it is brighter than a normal LED. This
is fixed with a DMX cable which talks to the
desks to create a chase.
.To provide a multiple colour to change the scene
mood I would prefer to use the LED Parcan than a
Flood because it can produce primary colours and is
an energy saving light which can give of a brighter
light which can be used for general coverage, the
flood wouldn’t be good to use because you aren’t
able to control the light as its just floods everywhere
but you are able to put gels in but that wastes time
having to change it over and over again.
4. Pc- pebble convex
Accessories:
Gel frame
Safety chain
Adjustable arm
Adjustable knob
Barn doors
G-clamp
15 amp plug
The PC is used for general cover or in fact a
spot light. The light is defused and has a
pebble lense to make the edges more softer
than being sharp. You are able to manipulate
the light by moving the Barn Doors. The
Pebble Convex lense is different to any
other lense from the Fresnel family.
If the Profiles were broken but I needed to isolate
the actor I would use the Pebble Convex than a
Selecon and a Parcan because its part of the
Fresnel family and the lens on the PC has a soft
edge and can focus on one person whereas the
Selecon is a more defused light and the Parcan
just adds a lot of depth but if your desperate you
could use it.
5. selecon
Accessories:
Gel frame
Safety chain
Adjustable arm
Ridged circular lense
2 adjustable knobs
Barn doors
G-clamp
The Selcon is bigger than a CCT and a PC, this
light can be used for a general wash, used more
because of the wider beam angle. This light can
be manipulated and is almost used for
everything.
If I was to do general washes for a Christmas
show I would use the Selecon instead of the
Parcan because it gives of a more defined light
than the Parcan and the light can manipulated by
using the barns doors because of the bigger
spread of light. Less lights are also needed for a
general wash.
6. cct
Accessories:
Gel frame
Safety chain
Adjustable arm
G-clamp
Barn doors
Adjustable knob
Ridged circular lense
The CCT is used for general cover most of the
time and gives of a defused light with a 45
degree beam angle . You are able to
manipulate light using the Barn Doors and is
500 Watts.
I would prefer to use this than
the Par Can because you are
able to manipulate the light and
the Par Can takes over half of
the stage and this can focus on
one person .
7. 1k Scena
Accessories:
Gel frame
Safety chain
Adjustable arm
G-clamp
Barn doors
The 1K is a more defused light and can be
used for general cover and predominantly
used for back lights. You are able to change
to lighter colours when using Jell frames.
This is the brightest light but it doesn’t go as
further than any other. If you put these in a
triangular shape and zoning on one person
there wouldn’t be a single shadow on stage
as there directing in different places.
X
To create back light for a musical I
would use the 1K over birdie because
the 1K has a more higher wattage
which means its more brighter and can
take up more general coverage
whereas the birdie isn’t powerful
enough to cover a large space and
there used more for aesthetics.
8. birdie
Accessories:
Gel frame
Safety chain
Adjustable arm
G-clamp
Barn doors
Halogen lights
13 amp – 15 amp
Birdies are a very small light that is actually
surprisingly bright, this can be used in museums,
exhibitions that are used for aesthetics to look
pretty. You are able to attach these to a Tross
and controlled by lighting desk and you are able
to manipulate the light using Barn Doors.
I would much prefer to use the Birdie than
the Flood Light because in stead of lighting
up the whole audience, you can able to
make it look more pretty using Birdies to
do a chase repeatedly on the audience just
like at We Will Rock You.
9. Pin spot
Accessories:
Safety chain
Adjustable arm
G-clamp
13 amp – 15 amp
The Pin Spot can be used for at Disco’s for on a
glitter ball and also for Strictly Come Dancing for
on the glitter ball as you would use 2 to 4 Pin
Spots to get some coverage. These can be
used for exhibitions but you cant direct the light
so should mainly be used for a big artefacts.
If I was to light up a glitter ball I would use
the Pin Spot than the flood or LED Parcan
because the Pin Spot is small and you can
direct the light and aesthetics used.
Whereas the Flood would light up
everything in the surrounding area and LED
Parcan only uses colours and we only need
white.
10. Flood light
Accessories:
Gel frame
Safety chain
Adjustable arm
G-clamp
15 amp
The Flood Light is mainly for lighting up the
audience, and are used for football matches
or any out door sport. This has a radiant of
light going from 0 – 100%. Used for general
washes to add that bit of depth with other
Fresnel’s. You are not able to control the light
with Barn Doors and the beam angle is... Also
you can daisy chain these up to have them in
a row of four or as many as you want. And
overall all they just flood everywhere.
If I was to light up a cydorama I would
only use the Flood light in stead of a
Profile or a Birdie because the flood
light has a wider spread of light and is
more powerful to create more general
coverage whereas Profiles have more
of a defused light and the birdie isn’t
powerful enough and hasn’t got a
wider spread of light.
11. Source four
Accessories:
Gel frame
Safety chain
Adjustable arm
Shutters
15 amp
G-clamp
The source four is used either for a
Theatre shows or on TV Shows such as
X-factor for when you want to
concentrate on one performer. Always
used for on rigs and not for on the
floor, the bulb is energy saving which
means the light is more brighter and
with the shutters already attached you
can manipulate the light by moving
the shutters to create shapes.
If I wanted to isolate an actor on stage I
would use the Source Four over a Selecon
because the Source Four can focus on one
person and has a defined edge and area
whereas the Selecon is mainly used for
general washes and you don’t get a defined
edge.
12. Minuette profile
Accessories:
Gel frame
Safety chain
Adjustable arm
Shutters
15 amp
G-clamp
Gobo
To create a window effect for a set
design I would use the Minuet Profile
instead of the Parcan because you are
able to place Gobo’s in to create
different effects and your able to focus
the light whereas the Parcan wouldn’t
be used because your not able to focus
a light or put a gobo in.
A minuette profile can be used
on X-factor as it is a spot light,
so there for it is used to focus
on one specific person. The
beam angle is 50 degrees, the
first adjustable knob is used to
focus the light. The second
knob makes the light bigger or
smaller, and the lens is just
like a Pebble Convex
