14. Case Study 1:
Family relocation
What we did
Family with two primary school age children, moving
for the start of the school year in September.
The father works for a multinational energy
company, with headquarters in Canary Wharf.
Situation
Briefing: we spent an hour on the phone going through
the family’s requirements and constraints, the children’s
current school level, their knowledge of English, etc.
June
Property Search: following a further client briefing and
based on the confirmed school and the office location, we:
- identified potential areas for the family to live in
- organised a day of viewings in August
- assisted until the tenancy agreement was signed
July
Settling in Package: once our clients found their
ideal property, we organised their council tax, home
insurance, broadband, TV, and utilities. We also advised
on GP registrations and where to buy a vacuum cleaner!
August
What our clients had to do
1) Tell us their preferences
2) Come over: - For a day of school visits
- For a day of property viewings
- To collect their keys and move in!
The family moved into the Greenwich area and
the children now go to school near Canary Wharf.
Our client walks to work in 20 minutes,
and the children walk to school in 10!
Result
1
School strategy and search: we identified potential areas
and schools that could suit the family. We organised
school visits and assisted in the registration process until
the children were offered places.

16. Best practice: FAQs.
Planning a relocation: timing and fees
When should you start
planning your personal relocation?
Families with children: as soon as possible in order
to discuss and agree school choices and the registration
process which will impact on the choice of areas to live in.
Individuals and couples: we recommend starting
at least 8 weeks ahead – earlier if possible of the
desired move-in date in order to identify potential
areas to live in and budget constraints.
17. Best practice: FAQs.
Planning a relocation: timing and fees
When should you start
registering for schools?
State schools: once you have
proof of address in the borough.
Private/international schools: as early
as possible, especially for top schools.

Planning a relocation: timing and fees
How much are school fees?
Independent British and international
schools command fees ranging from
£8,000 to £30,000+ p.a. depending
on the school type, the age of the
children and the school’s reputation.
State schools are free.
19. Best practice: FAQs.
Planning a relocation: timing and fees
How much rent can I “afford” as a tenant?
“Affordability” as calculated by agents is 30
times the monthly rent. So, for example, to
afford a monthly rent of £2,000, applicants
will require a minimum annual income of
£60,000. This can, however, vary by landlord.

Editor's Notes
Start with survey about highest causes of stress for people – moving home
What is more stressful than marrying or divorcing ? Moving home
Removed 2012 – I think that you can say it but if it’s on the slide people may focus on that and think that you haven’t been established for that long??
This is meant to be funny (a little)
If you wanted to simplify it, you could just have headings for the ones that SLR is not involved in and talk through the considerations.
Slide implies that SLR doesn’t help with office/business relocation. Is that right? If so, you could make you proposition clearer and pitch yourselves as home relocation??
Installation Guide – not sure whether this is an already printed document but “Settling In” or “Moving In” Guide might be better.
Another USP could be that you offer a personal service tailored to each client’s need and also that you specialize in London and the HC?
