Author’s Purpose
     By Parker Tracey
What is Author’s Purpose?
• The author’s purpose is what the author
wrote the story to do. For instance, an author
wanted to write a factual passage about Ben
Franklin. The author would then want to
  inform people about Ben Franklin.
Types of Author’s Purpose
• Entertain

• Inform

• Persuade Don’t Eat Meat
Entertainment Example
Giant squids are evil,
the most evil by far.
Giant squids are evil,
because one ate my car.

Giant squids are tasty,
they really are a treat.
Giant squids are tasty,
calamari is really sweet.
We apologize for the fault in the slides.
Those responsible have been sacked
Informative Example
Did you know that the sun is about 93 million
miles away? Also Pluto is no longer considered
a planet. Plus, Mars is named after the god of
  war!
Taken from “Random Planet Facts.”
We apologize again for the fault in the
slides. Those responsible for sacking the
people who have just been sacked, have
been sacked.
Persuasive Example
• I believe that a vegetarian life is a more
productive life. You don’t get as many fats
from food, and you are doing a favor to the
  animal population. Go vegetarian today!
Vegetarian Power!!!!!!!!!!!
Yet again we apologize for the fault in
the slides. Those responsible for sacking
the people who just sacked the last guys
who were just sacked, have been sacked.
Try and find the author’s purpose in this clip from a
film about the Spartans. Is it to entertain, to
  inform, or to persuade?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6psq-
  APRK5c&feature=player_detailpage
Answer
The author’s purpose in that clip was to
Entertain. You can tell because it is more
focused on action rather than explaining facts
or trying to get you to do something.
How to Tell the Difference
• Entertain- Focused around action, fiction, or
  just plain comedy.

• Inform- Focused on telling facts.

• Persuade- Focused on trying to get someone
to follow an idea or use a product. (etc.)
Another video
What is the author’s purpose of this video?

  E&feature=player_detailpage
Answer

people to use oxiclean stain remover.

       R.I.P Billy Mays.
Final Video
This is the final video I’m going to show.
You know what to do.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HECa3bAFA
  Yk&feature=player_detailpage
Answer
The video is meant to ENTERTAIN.

(I couldn’t find a very good informative clip that
   wasn’t longer than 2 minutes.)
Game Time!
Here is the link to a fun game I found for you!

New Question
Before going to the next slide, what is the
  purpose of this Powerpoint?
Answer
The purpose of this slide show was to entertain
and inform! In certain cases, there can be
multiple purposes the author makes their
piece for. (I probably should have mentioned
  this before.)
End
Considering that I made this, you probably
learned nothing. You probably didn’t even get
the reference to Monty Python. Oh well. I
  guess I’ll see you later.
