The document discusses the importance of sustainable development. It notes that consumption of natural resources like fossil fuels has increased drastically over the last century due to industrialization and population growth. This has led to rising carbon dioxide levels and global warming. Specifically, cutting down rainforests is reducing the Earth's ability to absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. Some suggestions to work towards sustainable development include planting more trees, reducing greenhouse gas emissions through less driving and alternative fuels, and having a functioning society and economy with low unemployment to fund environmental research and projects.
1. Sustainable Development
We have written a short text about the things that we think are most important to have in mind if we
want a sustainable development.
The first topic is the environment. Our consumption of natural resources like oil, natural gas and
other fossil hydrocarbons have drastically increased the last century. This is due to our industrial
development and to the fact that we never seem to be satisfied, we always want more of the things
that we already have.
Already in the 19th century we had an industrial revolution in Sweden. Since then our consumption
has kept increasing and the earth has changed slowly, but in the last years the carbon dioxide level
in the air has grown fast.
A reason to why the carbon dioxide levels has started to rise even faster is not only that the
emissions are getting larger, but we are also ruining our earth's chance to take care of the carbon
dioxide like it naturally does.
Naturally the trees and plants take carbon dioxide from the air in the photosynthesis, and another
big issue is now that the rainforest is gradually being cut down, an area the size of Sweden every
year.
This isn't happening in Sweden but we are affected by it, actually the whole world is affected by
this. The average temperature of the earth is getting higher, the hot places are getting hotter and the
ice is melting, this results in a rising water level and the land area will be smaller and smaller. The
human population is growing and our earth will be over populated.
We have no solution of how to save our planet, but we have some suggestions of what could be
done.
Instead of cutting down the rain forests we should be planting more trees that could transform the
carbon dioxide to oxygen.
We should also try to reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases. There are many ways to do this,
some easier than others. We should try to use our cars less and instead go by bus or train. We should
also use fuels which have a low impact on the environment, such as bio-gas or electricity.
But it's not only the environment that needs a sustainable development. We also need to have a
functioning society, and a good economy. If we don't have this it will not be possible to save our
planet's climate either.
What we think is important in a functioning society is that the unemployment rate should be as low
as possible. This also leads to a better economy, because more people pay tax and the government
does not have to pay UIF.
Then we can use the money to research more about our climate. The state can also use the money to
start projects for a better environment, and create more jobs. Then the unemployment rate will be
even lower, which will give the state even more money in tax. If we could keep this positive circle
going, we would have a sustainable development in both our society and economy.
