1. Executive Summary
Existing education projects and foundations are working on same issues with different results. So the
team around presente! asked the question of how to set up a learning environment in our quickly
transforming world.
Our assignment has been to identify and present initiatives that are reinventing schools; using new curriculum designs and teaching methods; creating innovative learning environments; and are rethinking
their system through the use of technology more creatively and providing more personalized collaborative, creative, and problem-solving learning spaces.
We executed Edu on Tour 2011: Austria (EoT2011) in Styria, visited 10 schools and conducted 4 Creative
Edu Labs (CEL) gatherings during a process of 3 months. By doing so we could raise the awareness of
decision makers, link education institutions and develop our international activities.
In 2012 we run Edu on Tour 2012: Northern Europe. We visited 6 learning environments throughout
Northern Europe, organized 2 Creative Edu Labs live and ended the tour with a presentation at the Social Capital World Forum in Gothenborg.
What are our findings about the educators and institutions that we met on our way? There are some
characteristics that were significant in all learning environments. All institutions were built up by a vital
team of educators that are realizing their dream and bringing in their full person and personal interest
(like Permaculture, food, sports, music,…) with passion. Nearly all institutions had strong common vision
and were able to create a space where this vision was realized. Constraints of law or systematical structure were overcome with a good portion of courage and will to go the extra mile. Most of them activated a great bunch of social capital consisting of parents, local families, regional businesses and support of
the local governments like mayors and politicians.
This try out phase showed also desire for collaboration and collective solutions. At the same time individuals and organizations are overload with many problems through structural shortcomings of the eduplaymakers industries

cation system. Besides that we realized that there is a great need to learn how to cooperate and collaborate.
However great parts of our society are still educated with old paradigms and have built up strong habits
of competition and separation and ask for more structured support and leadership in order to gain sustainable results.
2. Introduction
Education for the 21st century is challenged into adopting new paradigms, driven by an era of technology that has had a great impact on our society while providing unlimited possibilities for exciting new discoveries and developments. (Michael Noer/Forbes, 19.11.2012).
The architects of future educational systems need to learn how use creativity and non-conformity to
deal with lack of resources (funding, infrastructure, quality of educators) and diverse local challenges to
establish an effective educational system. (Compare: Stacy Childress; HBR, March 2012; Louis Soares;
Center of American Progress, June 7, 2012)
With our formal educational systems regarded as deficient presente!’s vision is built around the core
idea that a challenged system developed innovative solutions that can be cross-pollinized and shared.
presente! mobilizes the strengths of a dynamic and innovative part of educational systems and gains a
multiplier effect by bonding those institutions by organizing local and national events and establishing
the collaborative online space Reevo, a platform for exchange and co-creation.
3. Edu on Tour as a disruptive Real Life Learning environment
3.1. Starting Point of Edu on Tour or why do we run this craziness
Bringing 2 dimensions of learning together by experiencing new forms of education in schools, communities, universities and organization and running EoT as a mobile learning space might give us the opportunity to initiate societal transformations around schools and learning environments.
If we take a critical look on how learning in our existing education system is conducted and alternatives
in education are working (compare the research of John Hattie, short summary below) we might figure
out the path of how to deal with new paradigms and create new spaces also for organizations to learn.
There is a great need to learn how to work, learn and live with our new mindset of collaboration and
self-organization we set up EoT as a disruptive learning environment. We could identify opportunities
and difficulties of working and learning together as a group while sustaining and creating our living. We
experienced various forms of learning in communities while sustaining a fluid network.
EoT is virtually and the participants all meet together on the first day of the tour. We identified trust and
a shared vision as key success factors and experienced how hard it is to keep a personal vision and follow new forms of collaboration.

3.4. Edu on Tour 2012: Northern Europe
Out of our experience in Austria a 1-week program was coming out as a dynamic group learning process
with concrete results and a social impact. In November 2012 12 social entrepreneurs and education activists from all around the world met up to a social media campaign for making alternatives in education
visible.
The participants realized the tour within a self-organizing process from and met the first time in person
at the start in Amsterdam.
Among those were also the responsible stuff and founders of Nuestra Escuela (Puerto Rico; Stated funded school with democratic principles; http://www.nuestraescuela.org/) that is one of the driving forces
in the education transition in South America. During the Edu on Tour Styria we visited 5 alternative education institutions.
