Young people are oftenaccusedof beinghastyintheirthoughtsandquickintheiractions;w/little orno
room forsecondthoughtsandrarelygivingthat“benefitof a doubt”.
Yet mostof the time,we are guiltyof it.
Whenone is young, everythingaroundseemstobe filledwithalife of theirown,invitingtocome and
see whatcomposessuchhue,suchvibrancies.Fora youngmind,thatcall isnearlyirresistible.One can’t
blame themreally.Whenone isinthatstage called“teenage years,yourarelygetadultstoexplainto
youwhat makes“dangerous”dangerous,andwhyshouldwe exercisecautionwhenwe see “caution”,
or what couldbe behindthat“warning”.
So we are lefttofindthese outonour own.
I’mnot sayinghere thatteenagersdon’thave anysense of rightor wrong,or theycan’t thinkcritically.
It’sjust thatin a stage where you’re still confusedastowhoyou reallyare or where tostand,it’shard to
trust one’sown judgmentsanddecisions.It’smaddening,actually.Beingtooyoungtobe treatedlike an
adultyetshunnedwhenbehavinglikeachild.Sointhe end,we’re stilllefttoourown,“a bunchof
misfits”some actuallyfeel.Withlittle ornoone to turnto, we are leftwithourowndevices,inthe age-
oldstruggle of findingoutwhere we fitinthisworld. Sowe dothat basic algebraicmethodof trial-and-
error.This way,that way,whicheverway.All inthe name of that deepdrive tobe able say something
significantwhenaskedthe question,“WHOAREYOU?” Everyopportunitytoprove one’sself seems
golden,andthe more people saythatwhatyou are doingisalready“a bitoff”,the more it drivesyouto
continue anddefyexpectationswhenatlastyouwill be able tosay (andperhapsgloat) thatafter all
those multitudeswhosaysyouwon’tmake it,youprovedyoudidmake it.
So inone way or anotherwe are guiltyof the accusation.We are indeedhastyinourthoughtsandquick
inour actions,because thisworldiscruel tothose whodon’t“belong”.We want to getoveras quickas
possible withthe “misfit”image.Secondthoughtsdon’thave muchroominusfor it will onlyaddtothe
confusion.We dothese andwe do these quick.Let’sjustthinkaboutthe consequenceslater.
However,nomatterhownegative thisimage mayseem, it’snotaltogetherhopelessforusyouths.
“Rash and irrational”are oftenlabelledtomanyyoungpeopletoday.Idon’tsubscribe tosuch.Call me
biased,butI believe youthshave theirmeasure of “wisdom”.One wisepersonsaidtome that“wisdom
doesnotcome withage,butwithbeingable toreflectrealizationfromone’sownexperiences”.That’s
it.That fire so commoninus youngpeople mustbe temperedbythe abilitytoslow downattimesand
checkwhere we are at that point.Let’snotbe on the hurry to grow up and be “adults”.Let’senjoythose
momentsonlyteenagerscanrelate to.
