Positive Features Of Persuasion
Persuasion is said to be the use of signs (messages) to influence its' receivers.
http://www.cios.org/encyclopedia/persuasion/Aintroduction_1whatis.htm. It means that if the
persuader wants to obtain the target, he createcreates messages which discourse is influential. By
persuasion one is able to change other peoples' attitudes, behaviors, beliefs and so on. (Bettinghaus
and Cody quoted by Perloff, 2003). Idiosyncratic characteristic of persuasion is that the process
seems to have an atmosphere of free will. People meet persuasion in everyday life, one could say in
any time. If the company want to sell some product – they use persuasion to convince the audience
that they need this particular one. Behind commercial world, people use persuasion to obtain some
goals or to improve their relationships with other people. But again it is all about convincing the
other side that their choice will be good for them and not to extort, otherwise it is not persuasion
anymore.

Persuader is thought to be an authority so the recipients believe that he is helping them. He use
symbols. Persuasion involves an attempt to influence – it must be persuader's goal to change the
audiences attitudes and he must be able to accomplish this target. "The main point here is that
persuasion represents a conscious attempt to influence the other party, along with an accompanying
awareness that the persuadee has a mental state that is susceptible to change. It is a type of social
influence. Social influence is the broad process in which the behaviour of one person alters the
thoughts or actions of another. Social influence can occur when receivers act on cues or messages
that were not necessarily intended for their consumption." (Dudczak, 2001 cited in Perloff,

Changing Attitudes During World War I
I Think during the war the attitude towards the two didn't change much. However later in the years,
there attitudes changed for one another. This seems to be an issue with many groups. The childhood
friends and acquaintances, and his father's non–Jewish contacts changed as time went on too. Many
people's actions towards other changed during the war times. A thing that got me in Toivi Blatt was
the deportation of people who were younger than 15 and older than 55. I couldn't fathom the thought
of losing my parents if I was 8 years old or the thought of my parents sending me off to an unknown
place. Wondering if we would ever be reunited. Before the war, there was a big push on getting the
kids out of the country and at this time. It would be

Changing Attitudes toward the Mentally Ill and their...
Introduction
Historically, the treatment of the mentally ill has often been poor around the world. Hospitals like
Bethlehem Hospital (Bedlam) in London, Lunatics Tower in Vienna, and La Bicetre in Paris treated
their patients notoriously bad. The "unbalanced" were locked in asylums, rarely released. Asylum
patients were locked in chains, tourists visited the asylums to see inmates, and patients were
sometimes feed spoiled food. This was due to the stigma against mental illness which lead to poor
accommodations and forced incarcerations. In the west mental illness is still stigmatized, but less so.
More often Westerners believe in a psychological perspective ion mental illness. The progression

Japan had the highest psychiatric bed ratio per capita and the highest number of psychiatric beds in
the world (Ng, 2010, p. 57–59). Japan has seven times as many beds per person as in the US, and
the average stay is 50 times longer. Patients typically spend years in a hospital per stay (as opposed
to days to weeks in the U.S.). (The Economist, 2013) In 1987 and again in 2002 pushes have been
made towards community–based mental health care. (Taplin, 2012, p. 79–85)
These statistics suggest that Japanese people, historically, may be happier to ignore the mentally ill.
And that that historical attitude is influencing contemporary practices. Mentally ill people are less
accepted and integrated into society. Because of cultural prejudice against the mentally ill, they are
considered more unwell and unsafe, and in more need of hospitalization. Another factor is the
relatively small amount of care available outside of hospitals. Opportunities and support for the
mentally ill outside of hospitals may be limited by the stigma they face as well. Outside resources
are growing, but still not largely used and accessible.
Role of the Family and Community
Family has traditionally been assigned the role of caregiver to the sick in Japan. (Hamano, 2010)
But family members may be ill prepared to deal with mental illness. Current initiatives have been
enacted to educate families and the community on psychology and mental illness. This can help

Cultural Pluralism Course At The Harvard Implicit...
The first assignment in our Cultural Pluralism course was to take part in several individual studies as
part of the Harvard Implicit Association Test (IAT). Each of the studies measures a person's attitudes
and beliefs that they may not be willing or unable to express and to write about our experience. For
some individuals, taking these types of tests would be possibly a little unsettling. As for myself, I
was very sure that I had a strong understanding of who I am and what I believe, so I thought the
results would not be very surprising. Since bias can occur at any phase of research, including data
collection I allowed the program to randomly choose three individual studies so I could avoid the
issue of potential bias by selecting only the ones that I had a personal interest in. Allowing the
program to choose would also ensure that I would get my "true" results regarding how I really
looked at issues because I wouldn't have any way of knowing how I would answer the questions
prior to the study. The first study measured my automatic association of the concepts "female" and
"males" with the concepts of "lead" and "support." The data suggested that I had a strong automatic
association of Male with lead and female with support. No surprise there since I have always
association lead or leadership with the males in my life such as my father and husband. They were
the strong ones, who directed the family in all matters of importance. My father was the "head" of
the household and

Arthur Birling's Outlook on Life Socially and In Business
In the play, Arthur Birling was one of the Predominant characters that portray an unsophisticated
and Pompous man, but on the other hand Mr. Birling was one of the wealthiest businessmen in the
area (Brumly) and was very involved in local politics. His success brings him hopes of achieving
Knighthood and thus making him closer socially to Lady Croft and Sir George.
"....there's a far chance that I might find my way into the next Honours list. Just for a Knighthood of
course." (Act 1. p.8)
As the play progresses the description of Mr. Birling certainly grants him a threatening appearance
due to his size and stature.
"heavy–looking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's about time you learnt to face a few responsibilities. That's something this public–school and
Varsity–life you've had doesn't seem to teach you!" (Act 1, p.16)
His self–centred and Pompous attitude (Not to mention his finances) gives him a social attitude
worthy of praise and he is not hesitant to boast and remind others about it, (especially when it comes
to putting the Inspector in his place).
"...I ought to warn you that he's an old friend (Chief Constable Colonel Roberts) and I see him fairy
frequently. We play gold together sometimes up at the West Brumley" – (Act 1, p.16).
Arthur Birling's out look on life socially is greatly contradictorily to what he truly desires; He tries
to impose an image to the other characters as a man who is in control of the events that occur in the
play. Mr. Birling in retrospect a snob who treats those who do not give him personal gain (Meaning
getting into the Honours list) like lesser people.
"You! You don't seem to care about anything. But I care. I was almost certain for a knighthood in the
next honours List" (Act 3, p.57)

A Powerful Argument Analysis
The introduction section comprises of powerful argument techniques and the use of rhetoric
everywhere. One key point is the technique of commonplace, one of the building blocks of
persuasion, which is information or knowledge that is commonly shared among an audience that
creates an attitude of shared thinking. For example, Heinrichs uses pop culture examples of the
Matrix, Britney Spears and Animal House to better connect with the audience, therefore, making his
topic more interesting and relatable. Another key point is the technique of seduction where you
manipulate someone to desire something through appeals to emotion and the senses. Heinrichs uses
the Food Network as an example with its pleasing visuals and sounds of food. Another key ... Show

The first step is setting your goal in what you what you want to achieve or obtain. True victory is
achieved when you get what you want from the other person not, necessarily, when you outscore
your opponent. The second step is determining your goals for your audience so you can determine
different techniques to change their mind. The persuasion of people can be achieved easier when
you change their mood, their opinion and their desire. The third step is determining the issue so you
can meet your goals. Blame, values and choice make up the three key categories of issues. To
produce a productive argument pinpointing the issue is imperative. The fourth step is selecting a
correct tense to prevent misinterpretations and accusations. The use of past tense determines guilt
and deals out punishment while the present tense distinguishes groups, gives praise and
condemnation. The future tense indicates future goals and how to achieve them. The final step is
understanding and fitting into the audience. In knowing the audience's beliefs and values you gain
the mentality and the knowledge of "commonplace." The knowledge of this allows you to use
decorum to better connect with the audience and meet their expectations.
– In chapter 13 of Thank you for Arguing, deductive and inductive logic are used to reach from a
commonplace to a conclusion and likewise, however, I'm still confused in how the process of that

Cognitive Consistency Theory: The Three Dimensions Of...
ATTITUDE
Introduction
Attitude refers to a learned tendency to evaluate things in a special ways which may include
evaluation of people, issues, object, or event. The evaluation can be positive or negative and can be
uncertain at times.
Researcher who took a more behavioural stance define attitude as predisposition to respond
consistently in a positive or negative way to some person, object, or situation.
Psychologist are in a better position to meet the goals of psychology (describe, explain, predict and
influence) when they know the attitude of people.
COMPONENT OF ATTITUDE
Attitude have been seen as having three dimensions which include A. Cognitive: this represents
belief, thought and expectation held about the object of ones ... Show more content on

A. Daryl Bem's (1972) Self– perception theory: it says that when people do not always know how
they think or feel about an issue as a result of that they sometime infer their attitudes from observing
their own behaviour. B. Cognitive consistency theory: according to this theory, people need to feel
that their attitude matches or are in harmony with one another. C. Leon Festinger's (1957) Cognitive
dissonance theory: we feel tension when we notice that we have two or more inconsistent thought
and we are then strongly motivated to make changes in our attitude restore the consistency.
CONDITONS UNDER WHICH ATTITDE GUIDES BEHAVIOUR
1. Pretty and Krosnick 1995, when the person attitude is strong. E.g. people who have a strong
favourable attitude towards Mills will vote for him than those who have moderate favourable
attitude towards him. 2. Fazio and Oers 1982, when a person shows a strong awareness of his or her
attitudes, the person rehearses and practices them in public. 3. Davidson and Jacards 1990, when the
attitude is relevant to the behaviour. E.g. one study found the general attitude towards birth control
was virtually unrelated to the use of birth pills in the following two years. The more the relevant the
attitude is to the behaviour, the better it will predict the behaviour. 4. Ample evidence exist that
changes in behaviour sometimes precede changes in

there. What has Bruno noticed about Lieutenant Kotler's interactions with his family? Explain. He
spends a lot of time that is needed with his father but he also whispers weirdly to his mother, and
somewhat starts to flirt with Gretel. Describe the change that Father and Mother agree should be

The article "Changing adolescent attitudes toward stuttering" from the "Journal of Fluency
Disorders" analyzes the attitudes that high schoolers have towards stuttering and stutterers. The
purpose of this study was to stop the manifestation of the negative stigmas/stereotypes that are
usually associated with stuttering while also determining whether or not these feelings could be
improved among adolescents. A public opinion survey was first distributed to two health classes at a
local high school. They were then given a live oral presentation done by someone who suffers from
a stutter. The same opinion poll was redistributed afterwards. In two other separate classes, the same
survey was given but instead they watched a video presentation about stuttering which featured the

Advertisements Act As Important Tools For Companies And...
Advertisements act as important tools for companies and organizations to persuade their desired
audiences to believe in their product and to want what is being promoted. They accomplish this task
by incorporating a wide variety of persuasive techniques in order to enhance their product and/or
message. Throughout the advertisement multiple scenes are employed to build up the feeling of
nostalgia and trust before the product is even revealed; they are played out in the attempt to
strengthen the positive emotions connected to the product, and the brand, in order to better persuade
the audience. The McDonald's advertisement uses an appeal to positive emotions, similarity with
target, and source trustworthiness to effectively persuade parents that the McDonald's brand has
remade itself to be a healthier version for their children, while also portraying that it's the same
McDonald's they know and love. This advertisement aims to appeal to parents as McDonald's
focuses on expanding upon the idea that parents want their children to have childhoods like theirs, if
not better, and it utilizes many techniques to accomplish this. Most of the advertisement exemplifies
this as it quickly explores the relationship between a young boy and girl. By revealing at the end that
the boy who seemed to be taking care of the girl was actually her father, it appeals to parents and
their desire to take care of their children in the best way possible. In addition to this, by showing the

A tri–component attitude model consists of three major components as affect, cognition and

acquired by a combination of the attitude object and related information from different sources. With

c) People change their attitudes, so companies should be aware of it. They should go forward with

d) As a production manager I will add such attributes as vitamins to breakfast cereal, making the

tendency is to buy healthy products and will change the customers' attitude toward the brand.

Changing Attitudes Of Aging Our Negative Images Of Old Age
As stated in No–one Expects Me Anywhere, Pamela Gibson states, "...above all we need to rethink
our attitudes of aging... our negative images of old age are constantly reinforced through film,
television, and newspapers, where representation often resembles caricature (Gibson, 87)." By only
accepting and representing one small portion of society, the media is setting up consequences for the
rest of society who do not fall under the accepted standards. As a whole, Vogue represents women in
a way that takes away from their identity. Fashion magazines like Vogue are supposed to show
fashions and cosmetics that can give women a sense of expression and a way for them to truly
identify for themselves. More often than not only a woman's body is displayed, taking away from
her ability to be a human being just like everyone else. Fashion and advertising has a way of taking
away from a woman's identity rather than helping her find it. Vogue features some diversity but is
still lacking cultures that make up so much of the world's population. This magazine hardly features
anyone that does not fit into the small box of the white European culture. If other cultures are
represented they are not the focal point or the language that surrounds the image contradicts all
meaning. The language displayed in this magazine plays just as much as an influential role as the
images do.
This issue of Vogue reiterated the idea of gender and identity as a performance. All of the models are

Factors Of Attitude Affect Behaviour
Attitude is a major factor affecting behaviour. Attitude is an evaluate statements or judgements
concerning objects, people or events. Attitudes are evaluates statements– either favourable or

Attitudes are not the same as values, but the two are interrelated. 1.3.1Structure of Attitudes
Structure of an attitude can be described in terms of three components. Affective component:
Affective component involves a person's feelings / emotions about the attitude object. Behavioural
(or conative) component: Behavioural component is the way the attitude we have influences how we

modelling our attitudes after those they admire, respect, or shape our attitudes and behaviours to
align with theirs. People also imitate the attitudes of popular individuals and those they admire and

believe, for example, that supervisors, auditors, bosses, and time and motion engineers are all in
conspiracy to make employees work harder for the same or less money, then it makes sense to try to
understand how these attitudes were formed, their relationship to actual job behaviour and how they

Reasons for Australia's Changing Attitude Towards the...
Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War started in 1962–75. Some of the reasons for Australia's
involvement in the Vietnam War were mostly to do with the fear of communism and using the
"forward defence" strategy to prevent the domino theory from happening. During this time
Australia's attitude towards the war changed due to the protesting of anti–war groups such as 'save
our sons', it was believed that it was more of a civil war then a communism war, and because it was
a television war. Communism was greatly feared in Australia, and Australia would've done anything
to keep it out of the country, "It took us not five minutes to decide that when this thing came to the
point of action we would be in it..."– Robert Menzies. The Australian ... Show more content on

This was the beginning of society's change of perspective towards the war. In 1970, 3 Moratorium
Movement had taken place in Australia. The first Moratorium Movement was held in May, over 200

didn't take much action towards stopping the march. The second Vietnam Moratorium that took
place in September that year but unlike the first movement it was a lot smaller and violence
occurred, 200 people were arrested in Sydney alone. This movement first took place in the US;
hundreds of thousands of people stopped work for the day and protested on streets to their country's
involvement in the war. The strength and number of people in the moratorium movement shocked
the government; they were surprised at the level of people against the Vietnam War. Between 1970–
1971, Australian troops were slowly withdrawn from Vietnam. In 1972 at the end of the war it
became clear that most of Australia were against and that they no longer agreed with the "Forward

throughout Australia protesting about different issues in the Vietnam War, but mostly about

time Australia conscripted men to overseas. If men that had been conscripted had refused to go to

Cognitive Dissonance Essay
Cognitive Dissonance
How do human beings make decisions? What triggers a person to take action at any given point?
These are all questions that I will attempt to answer with my theoretical research into Leon
Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance, as well as many of the other related theories. We often do
not realize the psychological events that take place in our everyday lives. It is important to take
notice of theories, such as the balance theory, the congruency theory and the cognitive dissonance
theory so that one's self–persuasion occurs knowingly. As psychologist and theorist gain a better

The action taken would create psychological consistency in one's mind. These theories are very
interesting and have been quite researched, but none more so than Leon Festinger's theory of
cognitive dissonance.
Leon Festinger's theory, unlike the others I have described, deal with quantitative aspects, as well as
qualitative. That's what is so different and revolutionary about Festinger's theory. Robert Wicklund
and Jack Brehm (1976), in their book Perspectives on Cognitive Dissonance, write," Most notably,
the original statement of dissonance theory included propositions about the resistance–to–change of
cognitions and about the proportion of cognitions that are dissonant, both of which allowed
powerful and innovative analyses of psychological situations (p.1). The term "dissonance" refers to
the relation between two elements. When two elements do not fit together they are considered
dissonant. Cognitive dissonance can be broken down into a number of elements. As
Brehm and Cohen (1962) write, "A dissonant relationship exist between two cognitive elements
when a person possesses one which follows the obverse of another that he possesses. A person
experiences dissonance, that is, a motivational tension, when he (or she) has cognitions among
which there are one or more dissonant relationships"

elderly in Nigeria in general, and in particular among the Yoruba of Southwest. The paper examines

For example, an older person who was hard to get along with is more likely to lack support than the
cheerful old person who gets along well with family and neighbours (Peil, 1991). All these are
important variables, which determine whether individuals will receive adequate care and support
from family and society. It is evident from the various literature that, very little attention has been
paid to older people of modern industrializing societies of the world. In Nigeria for example, as well
as in most developing countries, the need to plan for the welfare of older persons has received very
little attention. There are clear evidences of lack of formal social support services for older people in
Nigeria, such as Social Securiy, Pension, Health Insurance Scheme, Old Peoples Home, etc. One of
the explanatory factors arises from the belief that the existing extended family system generally
protects and provides for the welfare of old people in rural and agricultural societies. Hence, where
an older person is childless, his/her brothers or sisters or even the children of his siblings are
believed to be responsible for his/her maintenance. This may not be unconnected with why most
policies, programmes and projects in the developing countries such as Nigeria have been
concentrated on the children and the youths at the expense of older persons in the country. Both
national and international organizations are seen working tirelessly

Advertising Is An Visible Constant Presence Essay
Even when we're blissfully unaware, we are being persuaded. In today's media driven world,
advertising is an almost constant presence. It is on television, in the films we watch, all over our
social media accounts, and even plastered on the walls of locations that we visit every day.
Advertising is meant to market a product or service to a consumer, utilizing mostly tactics of
persuasion to do so. Because advertising is so continually present, companies must be more
innovative than ever with their persuasive methods. Depending on the product or service, these
methods vary but some of the popular ones include appealing to the internal attitudes of the
consumer by using strategic and repetitive methods for the delivery of the message to appeal to the
target audience. Virtually all industries do this, though a unique example of persuasion in
advertising is found in the medical and health industries; the United States is one of the few
countries that allows direct–to–consumer advertising for pharmaceuticals. The healthcare industry
has always had the ability to advertise but with the new medical advertising, its budget for
marketing has exploded as well.
The Food and Drug Administration, also commonly referred to as the FDA, previously banned
direct–to–consumer advertising for drug companies, but the restriction was lifted in 1997 and a new
age of medical advertising was born. Previously, various medications and health services were
found directly through a visit to a doctor's

The changing attitudes toward athletics began in the mid 1820's when sport became commercialized,
publicized and organizations began to form. Harness Racing became the first modernized sport
which seen change thanks to growth and the transformation of America. You first begin to see the
formation of organization at the local, regional and national level. Rules became formal and written
and legitimized by the organization where before, rules were based on local customs, so variations
were plentiful. Competition also changed, going from local, to national and even international.
People began to have the chance to establish themselves in sport with additional opportunities to
make money. Professionals first began to emerge during this period as harness racing as the lines
between spectator and participant became clearly defined. Public information is reported regularly
through newspapers and journals and specialization of magazines and guides on sports began to
appear, where rules and statistics were publicized. Permanent structures for harness racing began to
appear in cities.
During the 1870's, four critical steps occurred to legitimize racing, and thereafter, sport: the creation
of the first establishment dedicated to racing (1871), the first sporting journal (1875), the formation
of the National Association of Trotting Horse Breeders (1876) and the establishment of a standard
breed of trotting horse (1879) The legitimacy as well as new income realities allowed money to be

Crime And Punishment By Fyodor Dostoevsky
In Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel Crime and Punishment, great attention is paid to Raskolnikov's inner
life, yet it is equally important to attend to those outside forces that affect him. A significant but
overlooked part of the novel, then, is how the city of St. Petersburg affects Raskolnikov. Through
my reading, I found it interesting that Raskolnikov regularly traverses the city's bridges and uses
them as a place for reflection. Overall, there are twenty–five appearances of the word "bridge" in the
novel, and so they appear in many different situations, holding many different purposes. First and
foremost, they serve as an important narrative device: they provide geographical context, split up
scenes, and provide scenes with emphasis by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Psychologically, however, this scene is significant because it establishes the bridge as a place of
introspection. In this case, it highlights Raskolnikov's confusion, which only further contextualizes
his frail emotional and mental state after the murder. Thus, this bridge–scene serves as a simple yet
concrete way to advance the plot while conveying Raskolnikov's mental state.
Another scene exemplifying this dual role of bridges occurs during Part Two when Raskolnikov
watches a woman attempt to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. Notably, this scene begins
with descriptive imagery of Raskolnikov's surroundings: he notices "the last pink gleams of the
sunset" on some houses, "blazing as if aflame..." (168–169). This provides a contrast to the more
depressing descriptions of the city found regularly; earlier in the chapter, for example, Raskolnikov
is described to inhale "the stinking, dusty, city–infected air" (154). Thus, in a sense, the bridge can
be a place of life and beauty. This mood changes, however, after the woman attempts to take her life.
In the aftermath, the narrator reports that Raskolnikov "looks upon it all with a strange feeling of
indifference and detachment. It was disgusting to him" (170). Narratively, this scene is significant as
it contains the sub–story of the woman, made possible by the bridge, but there is more to this scene
than that. The narrator

The Changing Attitudes of Lady Macbeth in William...
The Changing Attitudes of Lady Macbeth in William Shakespeare's Macbeth
In Shakespearean England, women's role in society was very different to what it is today. Today,
women are allowed, and in fact, almost expected to be educated, independent, confidant, outspoken,
and to go to work, to provide for themselves.
In the 1600's, it wasn't like that. Women were gentle, kind, and fragile. If they were well off, they
were expected to stay at home and sew, whilst their husbands went out and earnt the money. Poorer
women still had to stay at home, and they had to cook, clean, and generally look after the house.
Women were submissive; to be seen and not heard, and it was unusual for a woman to be ... Show

Lady Macbeth also talks about how she wants to be 'unsexed'; she wants her breasts filled with
poison instead of milk. The fact that she focuses on her breasts is significant; she wants to rid herself
of the most feminine part of her, the part that represents being a woman. By wishing away the milk
in her breasts she is wishing away the feelings of love, gentleness and tenderness that goes with
being a mother.
However, though she is wishing away her femininity, she uses a female method of getting her way;
she manipulates Macbeth into agreeing to kill the king when he refuses later in the play. She
repeatedly attacks him and wears down his defence, first questioning his love for her, and then
criticising him as a man. Finally, the last blow is the ultimate blackmail; she says that she knows
what it feels like to feed a baby and yet she would rather kill the baby than break a promise like he
has. Since elsewhere in the play, it is mentioned that Macbeth doesn't have any children, and so
Lady Macbeth mentioning this indicates that maybe they did have a child and it passed away. This
shows how cold–hearted Lady Macbeth is; she brings up something that would hurt Macbeth more
than anything, even though it is completely irrelevant, just to make sure she

Changing Attitudes Toward Stem Cell Research Essay
Changing Attitudes Toward Stem Cell Research There have been new disappointments in embryonic
stem cell research since the days of euphoric endorsement of "therapeutic cloning" by the media and
biotechnologists. In the past two years, initial enthusiasm over embryonic stem cells has been
dampened in the scientific community by some sober realizations, even as patient groups organize
public campaigns based on earlier assumptions. These cells are not as easy to maintain in the
laboratory as once thought. Researchers call them "tricky" and "more tedious to grow" than their
mouse counterparts, as well as "really difficult" to direct toward more specialized cells. The dream
of "immortal" cell lines that will easily ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The embryos to be destroyed by researchers in this campaign are at the same stage of development
as embryos in the womb who have been protected as human subjects in federally funded research
since 1975.(4) President Clinton's National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC) and its 1994
predecessor, the NIH Human Embryo Research Panel, conceded that the early human embryo is a
form of developing human life that deserves our respect(5). Treating human life as mere research
material is no way to show respect. Finally, this proposal is unnecessary because adult stem cells
and other alternatives are already achieving some of the goals for which embryonic stem cells have
been proposed, and new clinical uses are constantly being discovered.(6) In our view, human life
deserves full respect and protection at every stage and in every condition. The intrinsic wrong of
destroying innocent human life cannot be "outweighed" by any material advantage –– in other

Resistance To Persuasion
What are people attitudes when they are resistance to change? According to Zuwerink & Devine
(1996) mentions that although there has been plenty of research done on persuasion, few have
focused on the thoughts and behavior when resistance occurs (Zuwerink & Devine, 1996).
Everything in our everyday life from TV, to radio, to the wide web prevail in using persuasion to
affect the choices we make. In order to set a compass to understand and evaluate resistance to
persuasion, we divide it the two processes of persuasion: peripheral route and central route.
Zuwerink & Devine describe them as affective and cognitive processing (Zuwerink & Devine,
1996). In order to understand resistance, they had to think about what exactly is considered a strong

There are those individuals that strongly hold true to those beliefs and those who feel uncertain

beliefs of those individuals that resist (Swann, Pelham and Chidester, 1988). They constructed
questions which remained consistent with the beliefs of the individual but more towards an
extremist point of view (Swann, Pelham and Chidester, 1988). They expected the individuals how
had a high certainty in their beliefs would be more resistance towards the more extreme questions,
therefore changing their beliefs in the opposite direction, momentarily (Swann, Pelham and
Chidester, 1988). The first study was to demonstrate the contrast between standard questions on
women's roles versus the extreme questions and the control group was given unbiased questions
(Swann, Pelham and Chidester, 1988). The study resulted in a weak correlation for low certainty
believers would change with standard questions nor, high certainty believer changed for extreme

their beliefs because they were aware or concerned of how they would appear to others if they had
agreed to those extreme questions (Swann, Pelham and Chidester, 1988). In the end, their research
was sufficient in concluding that individuals with low–certainty beliefs are easily persuaded;
individuals with high–certainty beliefs can momentarily change their belief and thus be persuaded

The Story Of Tom Brennan Analysis
This period of our lives is a one bursting with challenging events and life–changing transitions, don't
you think? However testing this phase may be though, it's how we accept and counteract these
alterations that ultimately opens up a deeper understanding of our world and self. J.C. Burke's
thought provoking novel, 'The Story of Tom Brennan' and John Marsden and Matt Ottley's
heartbreaking picture book 'Home and away', address this concept of transition and their challenges
associated as each protagonist undergoes a catastrophic journey surrounding a challenged attitude
and the need for maturity development.
This powerful characteristic that transitional phases possess have the potential to be a rewarding
experience, as they provide an individual with the opportunity for growth and knowledge
development through newfound relationships. In 'The Story of Tom Brennan', Tom exhibits this
through his bond with Chrissy following the dark trauma he endures caused by his brother Daniel.
Initially, Tom feels detached from his own identity as he refers to himself in third person "I
missed...simple Tom Brennan", emphasising his deteriorated mental state. However, the relationship
he forms with Chrissy is instrumental in his recovery as he begins to find himself again. His
passionate tone in "Today I kissed Chrissy Tulake, I felt like Tom Brennan" epitomizes how this
bond empowers him to assert a stronger sense of personal identity. Burke, therefore, is able to reveal
how transitional

Advertising Campaign Is Not An Easy Task
Firms spend large amounts on advertising, estimated to reach $600b in 2015 , this spending
represents sunk costs . Increases in spending will not necessarily prove successful; moreover an
effective campaign will engage consumers and provide positive brand attitudes. For this reason this
area of research is important and should be noted. Increasing the effectiveness of one's advertising
campaign is not an easy task; there are many issues that have to be acknowledged and, more
importantly, understood. A plethora of research has been undertaken regarding consumer behaviour;
one only needs to look at the sheer volume of academic articles and books on the topic. There are
however several categories within consumer behaviour that a firm can target dependant on their
product offering. Exposure, memory and attitude pose these issues. Foremost exposure refers to the
process by which the consumer comes in to physical contact with a marketing stimulus and they can
be exposed to this stimulus during any stage of their decision making process. Exposure is mostly
affected by three factors; the position of the advert in mediums (e.g. TV or print); product
distribution; and shelf placement. Furthermore consumer memory refers to the persistence of
learning over time ; information is retrieved both consciously and unconsciously. Such memories
can be retained for any given period of time and stem from experiences and evaluations. Finally
attitude is an evaluation a consumer expresses

Persuasion Is The Act Of Changing Individuals
Persuasion is the act of changing individuals' attitudes or behaviours; this is all around us in
everyday life especially in the media. Persuasion has shown to be effective however there are some
attempts that fail, in this essay I will explain why persuasion doesn't always work. The factors I will
look at are reactance, counterarguing, avoidance, forewarning and attitude inoculation.
Reactance theory can explain why some persuasion attempts fail. This suggests that a persistent
attempt to persuade can actually backfire, because the individual feels that the persuasive message is
directly threatening their personal freedom. This threat to their personal freedom will often produce
a defiant response which is called the boomerang effect. The individual reacts against the intended
message and takes on a totally different attitude because they become irritated and their reaction is
to go against the persuader, especially if the individual has strong pre–existing attitudes. There is
research to support this by Rex A. Wright, Virginia Wadley, Maria Danner, and Priscilla Phillips. A
sample of 21 female undergraduates were asked to make an independent assessment of the
attractiveness of 2 men. In the experiment, they were or were not given an opinion statement that
threatened their freedom, in conditions of either no pressure, mild pressure or high pressure. The
results found that when participants' freedom was not restricted, then there was a persuasion effect.
However, when the

Essay On Non-Sided Perception
Can an expert or a non–expert communicator change the attitude of an individual using a two–sided
message?
Using messages that were either one–sided or two–sided conveyed by an expert and a non–expert.
The aim of the study was to measure the change in attitude of individuals. Using healthy eating as
the topic of discussion. By using a questionnaire that is then scored by the participant on the
semantic scale on their attitude towards the messages. The results provided were insignificant this
could be derived by many possible reasons. As an overall conclusion from the evidence obtained

(2000); Holdsworth, Raymond et al. (2004), it was stated that having some form of knowledge of
healthy eating increases the chances of behaviours and attitudes changing. As experts such as
doctors, nutritionists, fitness gurus etc. have a better understanding of healthy eating providing a
two–sided communicator–expertise message. Than non–expert communicators as they provide
information based on opinion.
Many individuals are more reluctant adhere to the messages provided by these experts. Therefore,
their attitude towards healthy eating is most likely to change regardless of their status in society. The
messages conveyed can impact on an individual through facts. Tesser, Martin and Mendolia (1995)
created a study thinking about a person who did something nice led that person to be evaluated more
favourably than when distracted from thinking, whereas thinking about a person who was insulting
led to more negative evaluations then when distracted. This is believed to change the attitude of an
individual through bias thinking. Which is a factor that influences the change in attitude of
individuals.
As the expert has prior knowledge and has enough sufficient information to encourage the
individual to change their attitude towards healthy eating. By providing them with non–bias
messages. However, Forgas, 1995; Petty et al (1993) believe that when motives bias thinking,

Understanding The Attitudes Of Others
Understanding the attitudes of others is critical in attempting persuasion. In the elaboration
likelihood model (ELM), persuasion splits into two routes: peripheral and central routes. These
routes determine the course of decision making; both are dependent on the individual's ability and
motivation (Gilovich et al., 2013). The proverb, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make
him drink, is an assumption in that certain individuals will never change their attitudes. If the
proverb were true, then persuasion would have no credibility; so, this research paper will dispute the
proverb. There are ways to persuade and influence others, even if they are as stubborn as the horse
that will not drink. By reviewing past research on persuasion, resistance to persuasion, persistence
of change, and the effects of involvement on persuasion, this paper will give support that certain
methods can be done to change attitudes, leading to a higher chance of persuasion. Our experiences
and the experiences of those around us help create the beliefs which assist our decision making.
There are those individuals that strongly hold true to their personal beliefs and those who feel
uncertain towards their beliefs. Swann, Pelham and Chidester's (1988) research attempted to change
the beliefs of those individuals resistant to persuasion (Swann et al., 1988). They constructed
questions which remained consistent with the beliefs of the individual but, more towards an
extremist point of view.

Positive Effects Of Attitude
Effects of Attitude
Distance, time, money, tiredness and several other things in life are just a question of one's attitude.
Context and situations decide the attitude.
If a person has to travel say 15 to 20 miles per day to his workplace, he will definitely be cribbing.
On the other hand, if the remuneration is going to be hefty he will not mind travelling the same
distance. The distance has not changed, but his attitude towards remuneration makes this passable.
One often complains that he does not have time for even the small things in life. Just an
introspection shall reveal that it is an excuse one gives to oneself. A person who does not have time
for a courtesy call to a related person will definitely be able to squeeze in time to spend time with
his friend in spite of any tight schedule. After a whole day of work, spending hours at the gym seem
alright, but helping out your mother or spouse at home may seem a burden or vice versa. Or else if a
friend calls for an outing will freak out forgetting both the above. It is ... Show more content on

People may throw stones at your path. It is your attitude with which you face the hurdle, that will
lead to 'a wall or a bridge'. Remember your attitude is the architect of your life.
Success requires more than talent. While talent and knowledge are essential, the key that unlocks
them both is your state of mind. Being positive makes you more dependable. When you are positive

Explain The Changing Attitudes Toward Abraham Lincoln
Heather Raquet
Professor Crider
HIS 460

The Changing Attitudes toward Abraham Lincoln Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate
States of America, which was established in 1861 as a rebellion to the election of Abraham Lincoln,
once stated that, "Next to the destruction of the Confederacy, the death of Abraham Lincoln was the
darkest day the South has ever known." In an interview with Alexander McClure in 1875, ten years
after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Davis expressed his realization that Lincoln's death was
devastating, not only to the South, but to the entire nation. However, Jefferson Davis and the people
of the South did not always have this attitude towards Abraham Lincoln. In fact, they rejected him
as a candidate for presidency in the election of 1860, mostly because of his position on slavery. The
attitudes toward Abraham Lincoln across the nation changed from the beginning of his presidency to
his assassination. This shift in opinions toward Abraham Lincoln from rejection to admiration,
especially in the South, is apparent in many sermons, newspaper articles and the nation's desire to
reelect Lincoln when he ran for his second term as President.
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky. Unlike many other
politicians in the past Abraham Lincoln was not born into a family heavily involved in politics. His
father was a farmer; his mother took care of the house. Abraham Lincoln attended school as a

A Comparison Of The Queen From The Cheese And The Worms '?
The Queen from The Uncommon Reader and Menocchio from The Cheese and the Worms lived
hundreds of years apart, however they exhibit a variety of similarities in their endeavors in reading.
Both the Queen and Menocchio were reintroduced to the world of reading by a "guide" at a later age
in life and their newfound passions lead to general disapproval from their surroundings for failing to
fulfill their appropriate roles as a public figure and obedient slave, respectably. This disapproval
ultimately leads to the demise of both characters with Menocchio being burned at the stake and the
Queen abdicating – essentially ceasing to exist in her primary role, and metaphorically passing on.
The Queen from the Uncommon reader was intelligent and well read, "but liking books was
something she left to other people." The overall apathy in life stemmed from the belief, that reading
as a hobby involved preferences, and "preferences had to be avoided; preferences excluded people."
Her introduction to the traveling library and Norman Seakins sets her on a lifelong journey of
reading. After hiring Norman as her "amanuensis", the Queen quickly became attached to the
"comforting pile of books she had got used to finding on her bedside table" and began exploring the
literary world through the eyes of Norman with just some deviation of his proposed readings.
Similarly, Menocchio's reading choices and habits were not cultivated by his own mind, but rather a
collective effort of his social

Different Morals, Attitudes, and Goals with Changing...
As generations come and go, I've noticed that each generation has grown up with different morals,

distinct in their own ways. With each new generation being shaped and molded by the previous one,
by offering more and more to help them. Now when you look at my generation now and the new
one slowly coming up as well, you can see that we have been turned into a selfish, lazy, and even
rude generation. If you look back on our older generations, they were never handed anything.
Everything they wanted they had to work hard for an even struggle doing it. In this day and age it
seems all anyone looks for is hand–outs, no one wants to work hard for anything and achieve it.
Everyone looks for the shortcuts through life, when there are none. Another reason why things are
so much easier for this generation is the new technology we have available. With all the new
technology and so much help from our previous generations, it has gave this generation a different
attitude and not so much in a good way. This generation's attitude has been infected with laziness,
selfishness, and greed. It seems that most people in my generation today is very and only self–
focused. They are all worried about how much money they can make and care about only what they
want, and how quick they can obtain it. I feel as though previous generations have made our life so
much easier, we take it for

The Potential Influences Of Attitude And Attitude Change
Attitudes are conceptualised as stable entities or temporary constructions (Bohner and Dickel,
2011). The following article moves on to describe in greater detail the potential influences of
attitude and attitude change with the aim of highlighting possible reasoning behind these.
Furthermore, to define a particular attitude as a 'stable entity' is to suggest that one's attitude is
derived from a preconceived idea or memory. To the contrary, a 'temporary construction' is to
construct an attitude in an instant following a particular event or stimulus. Whilst Visser and
Mirabile (2004) claim that attitudes are a stable entity, and in contrast Shwarz (2007) believes
attitudes are a temporary construction, Eagly and Chaiken (2007) take a moderate stance by defining
attitudes as a psychological tendency, expressed by evaluating a particular entity with some degree
of favour or disfavour. To further investigate attitude change, the topic used as stimulus for this
study is cannabis use. Cannabis use is progressively developing a controversial reputation in todays'
society. Research has shown that on one hand, some of the strongest evidence for marijuana's
therapeutic potential derives from treating long term illnesses such as multiple sclerosis by
providing highly reported pain relief (Kmietowicz, 2005). On the other, frequent cannabis use
predicts later depression and anxiety (Moore et al., 2007), and poses an increased risk of psychosis
and schizophrenia (Kmietowicz, 2005).

less likely to change because of one mass communication message. On the top of that researchers

reveal that a number of variables working together at the same time results in attitude change.

Example Of Social Judgement Theory
Social Judgement Theory
In the discourses of everyday human interaction, messages are crafted, communicated, received, and
responded to. Social Judgement Theory argues that how the recipient of a message perceives and
interprets a message, involves a process of judgment and effect that is based on the recipient's ego
(attitude) and anchoring position (opinion) about the topic. This process is key to the resulting
assimilation, rejection, or persuasion of that message. Where does this theory come from and how
does it work? This paper will explore how Social Judgement Theory was developed and is
described, along with providing an evaluation and example of the theory in practice.
The Development
Background
Social Judgement Theory is a theory of persuasion and attitude change. It was developed by the
work Muzafer Sherif and Carl Hovland in 1961. The central figure in the development of this theory
was Muzafer Sherif. Originating from Turkey, he is considered one of the founders of social
psychology. He is best known for his research on the autokinetic effect in the 1950's, which
describes the illusion that a small and stationary pinpoint of light in a dark room actually moves.
Using this same effect, he applied it to the way we perceive messages and change our beliefs and
positions over time.
Carl Hovland was considered an early communications theorist. He is best known for his work on
attitudes and social communications. He was a former Yale University Professor and

Positive Features of Persuasion and Influencing Others

  • 1. Positive Features Of Persuasion Persuasion is said to be the use of signs (messages) to influence its' receivers. http://www.cios.org/encyclopedia/persuasion/Aintroduction_1whatis.htm. It means that if the persuader wants to obtain the target, he createcreates messages which discourse is influential. By persuasion one is able to change other peoples' attitudes, behaviors, beliefs and so on. (Bettinghaus and Cody quoted by Perloff, 2003). Idiosyncratic characteristic of persuasion is that the process seems to have an atmosphere of free will. People meet persuasion in everyday life, one could say in any time. If the company want to sell some product – they use persuasion to convince the audience that they need this particular one. Behind commercial world, people use persuasion to obtain some goals or to improve their relationships with other people. But again it is all about convincing the other side that their choice will be good for them and not to extort, otherwise it is not persuasion anymore. "Persuasion is a complex, ... Persuasion involves an attempt to influence – it must be persuader's goal to change the audiences attitudes and he must be able to accomplish this target. "The main point here is that persuasion represents a conscious attempt to influence the other party, along with an accompanying awareness that the persuadee has a mental state that is susceptible to change. It is a type of social influence. Social influence is the broad process in which the behaviour of one person alters the thoughts or actions of another. Social influence can occur when receivers act on cues or messages that were not necessarily intended for their consumption." (Dudczak, 2001 cited in Perloff, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Changing Attitudes During World War I I Think during the war the attitude towards the two didn't change much. However later in the years, there attitudes changed for one another. This seems to be an issue with many groups. The childhood friends and acquaintances, and his father's non–Jewish contacts changed as time went on too. Many people's actions towards other changed during the war times. A thing that got me in Toivi Blatt was the deportation of people who were younger than 15 and older than 55. I couldn't fathom the thought of losing my parents if I was 8 years old or the thought of my parents sending me off to an unknown place. Wondering if we would ever be reunited. Before the war, there was a big push on getting the kids out of the country and at this time. It would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Changing Attitudes toward the Mentally Ill and their... Introduction Historically, the treatment of the mentally ill has often been poor around the world. Hospitals like Bethlehem Hospital (Bedlam) in London, Lunatics Tower in Vienna, and La Bicetre in Paris treated their patients notoriously bad. The "unbalanced" were locked in asylums, rarely released. Asylum patients were locked in chains, tourists visited the asylums to see inmates, and patients were sometimes feed spoiled food. This was due to the stigma against mental illness which lead to poor accommodations and forced incarcerations. In the west mental illness is still stigmatized, but less so. More often Westerners believe in a psychological perspective ion mental illness. The progression towards psychological understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Japan had the highest psychiatric bed ratio per capita and the highest number of psychiatric beds in the world (Ng, 2010, p. 57–59). Japan has seven times as many beds per person as in the US, and the average stay is 50 times longer. Patients typically spend years in a hospital per stay (as opposed to days to weeks in the U.S.). (The Economist, 2013) In 1987 and again in 2002 pushes have been made towards community–based mental health care. (Taplin, 2012, p. 79–85) These statistics suggest that Japanese people, historically, may be happier to ignore the mentally ill. And that that historical attitude is influencing contemporary practices. Mentally ill people are less accepted and integrated into society. Because of cultural prejudice against the mentally ill, they are considered more unwell and unsafe, and in more need of hospitalization. Another factor is the relatively small amount of care available outside of hospitals. Opportunities and support for the mentally ill outside of hospitals may be limited by the stigma they face as well. Outside resources are growing, but still not largely used and accessible. Role of the Family and Community Family has traditionally been assigned the role of caregiver to the sick in Japan. (Hamano, 2010) But family members may be ill prepared to deal with mental illness. Current initiatives have been enacted to educate families and the community on psychology and mental illness. This can help people know when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Cultural Pluralism Course At The Harvard Implicit... The first assignment in our Cultural Pluralism course was to take part in several individual studies as part of the Harvard Implicit Association Test (IAT). Each of the studies measures a person's attitudes and beliefs that they may not be willing or unable to express and to write about our experience. For some individuals, taking these types of tests would be possibly a little unsettling. As for myself, I was very sure that I had a strong understanding of who I am and what I believe, so I thought the results would not be very surprising. Since bias can occur at any phase of research, including data collection I allowed the program to randomly choose three individual studies so I could avoid the issue of potential bias by selecting only the ones that I had a personal interest in. Allowing the program to choose would also ensure that I would get my "true" results regarding how I really looked at issues because I wouldn't have any way of knowing how I would answer the questions prior to the study. The first study measured my automatic association of the concepts "female" and "males" with the concepts of "lead" and "support." The data suggested that I had a strong automatic association of Male with lead and female with support. No surprise there since I have always association lead or leadership with the males in my life such as my father and husband. They were the strong ones, who directed the family in all matters of importance. My father was the "head" of the household and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Arthur Birling's Outlook on Life Socially and In Business In the play, Arthur Birling was one of the Predominant characters that portray an unsophisticated and Pompous man, but on the other hand Mr. Birling was one of the wealthiest businessmen in the area (Brumly) and was very involved in local politics. His success brings him hopes of achieving Knighthood and thus making him closer socially to Lady Croft and Sir George. "....there's a far chance that I might find my way into the next Honours list. Just for a Knighthood of course." (Act 1. p.8) As the play progresses the description of Mr. Birling certainly grants him a threatening appearance due to his size and stature. "heavy–looking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's about time you learnt to face a few responsibilities. That's something this public–school and Varsity–life you've had doesn't seem to teach you!" (Act 1, p.16) His self–centred and Pompous attitude (Not to mention his finances) gives him a social attitude worthy of praise and he is not hesitant to boast and remind others about it, (especially when it comes to putting the Inspector in his place). "...I ought to warn you that he's an old friend (Chief Constable Colonel Roberts) and I see him fairy frequently. We play gold together sometimes up at the West Brumley" – (Act 1, p.16). Arthur Birling's out look on life socially is greatly contradictorily to what he truly desires; He tries to impose an image to the other characters as a man who is in control of the events that occur in the play. Mr. Birling in retrospect a snob who treats those who do not give him personal gain (Meaning getting into the Honours list) like lesser people. "You! You don't seem to care about anything. But I care. I was almost certain for a knighthood in the next honours List" (Act 3, p.57) His wealth combined with his position as Lord Mayor allows him to think that he has a sort of superiority towards others. • 12. A Powerful Argument Analysis The introduction section comprises of powerful argument techniques and the use of rhetoric everywhere. One key point is the technique of commonplace, one of the building blocks of persuasion, which is information or knowledge that is commonly shared among an audience that creates an attitude of shared thinking. For example, Heinrichs uses pop culture examples of the Matrix, Britney Spears and Animal House to better connect with the audience, therefore, making his topic more interesting and relatable. Another key point is the technique of seduction where you manipulate someone to desire something through appeals to emotion and the senses. Heinrichs uses the Food Network as an example with its pleasing visuals and sounds of food. Another key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first step is setting your goal in what you what you want to achieve or obtain. True victory is achieved when you get what you want from the other person not, necessarily, when you outscore your opponent. The second step is determining your goals for your audience so you can determine different techniques to change their mind. The persuasion of people can be achieved easier when you change their mood, their opinion and their desire. The third step is determining the issue so you can meet your goals. Blame, values and choice make up the three key categories of issues. To produce a productive argument pinpointing the issue is imperative. The fourth step is selecting a correct tense to prevent misinterpretations and accusations. The use of past tense determines guilt and deals out punishment while the present tense distinguishes groups, gives praise and condemnation. The future tense indicates future goals and how to achieve them. The final step is understanding and fitting into the audience. In knowing the audience's beliefs and values you gain the mentality and the knowledge of "commonplace." The knowledge of this allows you to use decorum to better connect with the audience and meet their expectations. – In chapter 13 of Thank you for Arguing, deductive and inductive logic are used to reach from a commonplace to a conclusion and likewise, however, I'm still confused in how the process of that ... ATTITUDE Introduction Attitude refers to a learned tendency to evaluate things in a special ways which may include evaluation of people, issues, object, or event. The evaluation can be positive or negative and can be uncertain at times. Researcher who took a more behavioural stance define attitude as predisposition to respond consistently in a positive or negative way to some person, object, or situation. Leon Festinger's (1957) Cognitive dissonance theory: we feel tension when we notice that we have two or more inconsistent thought and we are then strongly motivated to make changes in our attitude restore the consistency. Fazio and Oers 1982, when a person shows a strong awareness of his or her attitudes, the person rehearses and practices them in public. 3. Davidson and Jacards 1990, when the attitude is relevant to the behaviour. E.g. one study found the general attitude towards birth control was virtually unrelated to the use of birth pills in the following two years. The more the relevant the attitude is to the behaviour, the better it will predict the behaviour. 4. Ample evidence exist that changes in behaviour sometimes precede changes in ... He really does want to go back to Berlin so very bad, but he doesn't much remember what his life was like back there. What has Bruno noticed about Lieutenant Kotler's interactions with his family? Explain. He spends a lot of time that is needed with his father but he also whispers weirdly to his mother, and somewhat starts to flirt with Gretel. Describe the change that Father and Mother agree should be made to Bruno and Gretel's daily routine. Their parents have now decided that they need to continue their educations. The article "Changing adolescent attitudes toward stuttering" from the "Journal of Fluency Disorders" analyzes the attitudes that high schoolers have towards stuttering and stutterers. The purpose of this study was to stop the manifestation of the negative stigmas/stereotypes that are usually associated with stuttering while also determining whether or not these feelings could be improved among adolescents. A public opinion survey was first distributed to two health classes at a local high school. They were then given a live oral presentation done by someone who suffers from a stutter. The same opinion poll was redistributed afterwards. In two other separate classes, the same survey was given but instead they watched a video presentation about stuttering which featured the same person from the presentation. When recalling this event from her childhood, the actress remembers particularly having trouble with her vowels especially at the beginning of words (NPR). However, she was able to solve this problem after her elementary school teacher realized that she spoke fluently whenever she did accents and impressions. After this discovery, Blunt started to participate in theatre and eventually overcame her stuttering problem. She says that if it weren't for her childhood stutter, she never would have pursued a career in acting. Since then she has been recognized by the American Institute for Stuttering and was given their Freeing Voices award, an award given to people who have achieved professional success in spite of their stuttering (Stuttering ... • 20. Advertisements Act As Important Tools For Companies And... Advertisements act as important tools for companies and organizations to persuade their desired audiences to believe in their product and to want what is being promoted. They accomplish this task by incorporating a wide variety of persuasive techniques in order to enhance their product and/or message. Throughout the advertisement multiple scenes are employed to build up the feeling of nostalgia and trust before the product is even revealed; they are played out in the attempt to strengthen the positive emotions connected to the product, and the brand, in order to better persuade the audience. The McDonald's advertisement uses an appeal to positive emotions, similarity with target, and source trustworthiness to effectively persuade parents that the McDonald's brand has remade itself to be a healthier version for their children, while also portraying that it's the same McDonald's they know and love. This advertisement aims to appeal to parents as McDonald's focuses on expanding upon the idea that parents want their children to have childhoods like theirs, if not better, and it utilizes many techniques to accomplish this. Most of the advertisement exemplifies this as it quickly explores the relationship between a young boy and girl. By revealing at the end that the boy who seemed to be taking care of the girl was actually her father, it appeals to parents and their desire to take care of their children in the best way possible. Changing Attitudes Of Aging Our Negative Images Of Old Age As stated in No–one Expects Me Anywhere, Pamela Gibson states, "...above all we need to rethink our attitudes of aging... our negative images of old age are constantly reinforced through film, television, and newspapers, where representation often resembles caricature (Gibson, 87)." By only accepting and representing one small portion of society, the media is setting up consequences for the rest of society who do not fall under the accepted standards. As a whole, Vogue represents women in a way that takes away from their identity. Fashion magazines like Vogue are supposed to show fashions and cosmetics that can give women a sense of expression and a way for them to truly identify for themselves. More often than not only a woman's body is displayed, taking away from her ability to be a human being just like everyone else. Fashion and advertising has a way of taking away from a woman's identity rather than helping her find it. Vogue features some diversity but is still lacking cultures that make up so much of the world's population. This magazine hardly features anyone that does not fit into the small box of the white European culture. If other cultures are represented they are not the focal point or the language that surrounds the image contradicts all meaning. The language displayed in this magazine plays just as much as an influential role as the images do. This issue of Vogue reiterated the idea of gender and identity as a performance. Some of the reasons for Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War were mostly to do with the fear of communism and using the "forward defence" strategy to prevent the domino theory from happening. During this time Australia's attitude towards the war changed due to the protesting of anti–war groups such as 'save our sons', it was believed that it was more of a civil war then a communism war, and because it was a television war. The first Moratorium Movement was held in May, over 200 000 people all over Australia marched in it. Luckily this was a peaceful protest; the government didn't take much action towards stopping the march. The second Vietnam Moratorium that took place in September that year but unlike the first movement it was a lot smaller and violence occurred, 200 people were arrested in Sydney alone. This movement first took place in the US; hundreds of thousands of people stopped work for the day and protested on streets to their country's involvement in the war. The strength and number of people in the moratorium movement shocked the government; they were surprised at the level of people against the Vietnam War. Between 1970– 1971, Australian troops were slowly withdrawn from Vietnam. In 1972 at the end of the war it became clear that most of Australia were against and that they no longer agreed with the "Forward Defence" policy where they go out and met the threat where it was. These are all questions that I will attempt to answer with my theoretical research into Leon Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance, as well as many of the other related theories. We often do not realize the psychological events that take place in our everyday lives. It is important to take notice of theories, such as the balance theory, the congruency theory and the cognitive dissonance theory so that one's self–persuasion occurs knowingly. Leon Festinger's theory, unlike the others I have described, deal with quantitative aspects, as well as qualitative. That's what is so different and revolutionary about Festinger's theory. Robert Wicklund and Jack Brehm (1976), in their book Perspectives on Cognitive Dissonance, write," Most notably, the original statement of dissonance theory included propositions about the resistance–to–change of cognitions and about the proportion of cognitions that are dissonant, both of which allowed powerful and innovative analyses of psychological situations (p.1). The term "dissonance" refers to the relation between two elements. When two elements do not fit together they are considered dissonant. Cognitive dissonance can be broken down into a number of elements. As Brehm and Cohen (1962) write, "A dissonant relationship exist between two cognitive elements when a person possesses one which follows the obverse of another that he possesses. All these are important variables, which determine whether individuals will receive adequate care and support from family and society. It is evident from the various literature that, very little attention has been paid to older people of modern industrializing societies of the world. In Nigeria for example, as well as in most developing countries, the need to plan for the welfare of older persons has received very little attention. There are clear evidences of lack of formal social support services for older people in Nigeria, such as Social Securiy, Pension, Health Insurance Scheme, Old Peoples Home, etc. One of the explanatory factors arises from the belief that the existing extended family system generally protects and provides for the welfare of old people in rural and agricultural societies. Hence, where an older person is childless, his/her brothers or sisters or even the children of his siblings are believed to be responsible for his/her maintenance. This may not be unconnected with why most policies, programmes and projects in the developing countries such as Nigeria have been concentrated on the children and the youths at the expense of older persons in the country. It is on television, in the films we watch, all over our social media accounts, and even plastered on the walls of locations that we visit every day. Advertising is meant to market a product or service to a consumer, utilizing mostly tactics of persuasion to do so. Because advertising is so continually present, companies must be more innovative than ever with their persuasive methods. Depending on the product or service, these methods vary but some of the popular ones include appealing to the internal attitudes of the consumer by using strategic and repetitive methods for the delivery of the message to appeal to the target audience. Virtually all industries do this, though a unique example of persuasion in advertising is found in the medical and health industries; the United States is one of the few countries that allows direct–to–consumer advertising for pharmaceuticals. The healthcare industry has always had the ability to advertise but with the new medical advertising, its budget for marketing has exploded as well. The Food and Drug Administration, also commonly referred to as the FDA, previously banned direct–to–consumer advertising for drug companies, but the restriction was lifted in 1997 and a new age of medical advertising was born. • 42. Crime And Punishment By Fyodor Dostoevsky In Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel Crime and Punishment, great attention is paid to Raskolnikov's inner life, yet it is equally important to attend to those outside forces that affect him. A significant but overlooked part of the novel, then, is how the city of St. Petersburg affects Raskolnikov. Through my reading, I found it interesting that Raskolnikov regularly traverses the city's bridges and uses them as a place for reflection. Overall, there are twenty–five appearances of the word "bridge" in the novel, and so they appear in many different situations, holding many different purposes. First and foremost, they serve as an important narrative device: they provide geographical context, split up scenes, and provide scenes with emphasis by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Psychologically, however, this scene is significant because it establishes the bridge as a place of introspection. In this case, it highlights Raskolnikov's confusion, which only further contextualizes his frail emotional and mental state after the murder. Thus, this bridge–scene serves as a simple yet concrete way to advance the plot while conveying Raskolnikov's mental state. Another scene exemplifying this dual role of bridges occurs during Part Two when Raskolnikov watches a woman attempt to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. Notably, this scene begins with descriptive imagery of Raskolnikov's surroundings: he notices "the last pink gleams of the sunset" on some houses, "blazing as if aflame..." (168–169). This provides a contrast to the more depressing descriptions of the city found regularly; earlier in the chapter, for example, Raskolnikov is described to inhale "the stinking, dusty, city–infected air" (154). Thus, in a sense, the bridge can be a place of life and beauty. This mood changes, however, after the woman attempts to take her life. In the aftermath, the narrator reports that Raskolnikov "looks upon it all with a strange feeling of indifference and detachment. It was disgusting to him" (170). Narratively, this scene is significant as it contains the sub–story of the woman, made possible by the bridge, but there is more to this scene than that. The narrator ... The Changing Attitudes of Lady Macbeth in William Shakespeare's Macbeth In Shakespearean England, women's role in society was very different to what it is today. Today, women are allowed, and in fact, almost expected to be educated, independent, confidant, outspoken, and to go to work, to provide for themselves. In the 1600's, it wasn't like that. Women were gentle, kind, and fragile. If they were well off, they were expected to stay at home and sew, whilst their husbands went out and earnt the money. Poorer women still had to stay at home, and they had to cook, clean, and generally look after the house. Women were submissive; to be seen and not heard, and it was unusual for a woman to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lady Macbeth also talks about how she wants to be 'unsexed'; she wants her breasts filled with poison instead of milk. The fact that she focuses on her breasts is significant; she wants to rid herself of the most feminine part of her, the part that represents being a woman. By wishing away the milk in her breasts she is wishing away the feelings of love, gentleness and tenderness that goes with being a mother. However, though she is wishing away her femininity, she uses a female method of getting her way; she manipulates Macbeth into agreeing to kill the king when he refuses later in the play. She repeatedly attacks him and wears down his defence, first questioning his love for her, and then criticising him as a man. Finally, the last blow is the ultimate blackmail; she says that she knows what it feels like to feed a baby and yet she would rather kill the baby than break a promise like he has. Since elsewhere in the play, it is mentioned that Macbeth doesn't have any children, and so Lady Macbeth mentioning this indicates that maybe they did have a child and it passed away. However testing this phase may be though, it's how we accept and counteract these alterations that ultimately opens up a deeper understanding of our world and self. J.C. Burke's thought provoking novel, 'The Story of Tom Brennan' and John Marsden and Matt Ottley's heartbreaking picture book 'Home and away', address this concept of transition and their challenges associated as each protagonist undergoes a catastrophic journey surrounding a challenged attitude and the need for maturity development. This powerful characteristic that transitional phases possess have the potential to be a rewarding experience, as they provide an individual with the opportunity for growth and knowledge development through newfound relationships. In 'The Story of Tom Brennan', Tom exhibits this through his bond with Chrissy following the dark trauma he endures caused by his brother Daniel. Initially, Tom feels detached from his own identity as he refers to himself in third person "I missed...simple Tom Brennan", emphasising his deteriorated mental state. However, the relationship he forms with Chrissy is instrumental in his recovery as he begins to find himself again. • 52. Advertising Campaign Is Not An Easy Task Firms spend large amounts on advertising, estimated to reach $600b in 2015 , this spending represents sunk costs . Increases in spending will not necessarily prove successful; moreover an effective campaign will engage consumers and provide positive brand attitudes. For this reason this area of research is important and should be noted. Increasing the effectiveness of one's advertising campaign is not an easy task; there are many issues that have to be acknowledged and, more importantly, understood. A plethora of research has been undertaken regarding consumer behaviour; one only needs to look at the sheer volume of academic articles and books on the topic. There are however several categories within consumer behaviour that a firm can target dependant on their product offering. Exposure, memory and attitude pose these issues. Foremost exposure refers to the process by which the consumer comes in to physical contact with a marketing stimulus and they can be exposed to this stimulus during any stage of their decision making process. Exposure is mostly affected by three factors; the position of the advert in mediums (e.g. TV or print); product distribution; and shelf placement. Furthermore consumer memory refers to the persistence of learning over time ; information is retrieved both consciously and unconsciously. • 54. Persuasion Is The Act Of Changing Individuals Persuasion is the act of changing individuals' attitudes or behaviours; this is all around us in everyday life especially in the media. Persuasion has shown to be effective however there are some attempts that fail, in this essay I will explain why persuasion doesn't always work. The factors I will look at are reactance, counterarguing, avoidance, forewarning and attitude inoculation. Reactance theory can explain why some persuasion attempts fail. This suggests that a persistent attempt to persuade can actually backfire, because the individual feels that the persuasive message is directly threatening their personal freedom. This threat to their personal freedom will often produce a defiant response which is called the boomerang effect. The individual reacts against the intended message and takes on a totally different attitude because they become irritated and their reaction is to go against the persuader, especially if the individual has strong pre–existing attitudes. There is research to support this by Rex A. Wright, Virginia Wadley, Maria Danner, and Priscilla Phillips. A sample of 21 female undergraduates were asked to make an independent assessment of the attractiveness of 2 men. In the experiment, they were or were not given an opinion statement that threatened their freedom, in conditions of either no pressure, mild pressure or high pressure. • 60. Understanding The Attitudes Of Others Understanding the attitudes of others is critical in attempting persuasion. In the elaboration likelihood model (ELM), persuasion splits into two routes: peripheral and central routes. These routes determine the course of decision making; both are dependent on the individual's ability and motivation (Gilovich et al., 2013). The proverb, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink, is an assumption in that certain individuals will never change their attitudes. If the proverb were true, then persuasion would have no credibility; so, this research paper will dispute the proverb. There are ways to persuade and influence others, even if they are as stubborn as the horse that will not drink. By reviewing past research on persuasion, resistance to persuasion, persistence of change, and the effects of involvement on persuasion, this paper will give support that certain methods can be done to change attitudes, leading to a higher chance of persuasion. Our experiences and the experiences of those around us help create the beliefs which assist our decision making. There are those individuals that strongly hold true to their personal beliefs and those who feel uncertain towards their beliefs. • 62. Positive Effects Of Attitude Effects of Attitude Distance, time, money, tiredness and several other things in life are just a question of one's attitude. Context and situations decide the attitude. If a person has to travel say 15 to 20 miles per day to his workplace, he will definitely be cribbing. On the other hand, if the remuneration is going to be hefty he will not mind travelling the same distance. The distance has not changed, but his attitude towards remuneration makes this passable. One often complains that he does not have time for even the small things in life. Just an introspection shall reveal that it is an excuse one gives to oneself. A person who does not have time for a courtesy call to a related person will definitely be able to squeeze in time to spend time with his friend in spite of any tight schedule. After a whole day of work, spending hours at the gym seem alright, but helping out your mother or spouse at home may seem a burden or vice versa. Or else if a friend calls for an outing will freak out forgetting both the above. It is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the contrary they do not mind giving generous 'Tips' in fancy restaurants because of attitude. Perceptions of Attitude are more important and can change during periods of Natural disasters. During a recent flood havoc in a major city in India, the people's attitude was so positive that they were able to render all assistance to those affected without any inhibitions of class, creed, rich, poor, etc. People may throw stones at your path. It is your attitude with which you face the hurdle, that will lead to 'a wall or a bridge'. Remember your attitude is the architect of your life. Success requires more than talent. While talent and knowledge are essential, the key that unlocks them both is your state of mind. Being positive makes you more dependable. • 64. Explain The Changing Attitudes Toward Abraham Lincoln Heather Raquet Professor Crider HIS 460 23 April 2015 The Changing Attitudes toward Abraham Lincoln Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States of America, which was established in 1861 as a rebellion to the election of Abraham Lincoln, once stated that, "Next to the destruction of the Confederacy, the death of Abraham Lincoln was the darkest day the South has ever known." In an interview with Alexander McClure in 1875, ten years after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Davis expressed his realization that Lincoln's death was devastating, not only to the South, but to the entire nation. However, Jefferson Davis and the people of the South did not always have this attitude towards Abraham Lincoln. In fact, they rejected him as a candidate for presidency in the election of 1860, mostly because of his position on slavery. The attitudes toward Abraham Lincoln across the nation changed from the beginning of his presidency to his assassination. This shift in opinions toward Abraham Lincoln from rejection to admiration, especially in the South, is apparent in many sermons, newspaper articles and the nation's desire to reelect Lincoln when he ran for his second term as President. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky. Unlike many other politicians in the past Abraham Lincoln was not born into a family heavily involved in politics. His father was a farmer; his mother took care of the house. Abraham Lincoln attended school as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. A Comparison Of The Queen From The Cheese And The Worms '? The Queen from The Uncommon Reader and Menocchio from The Cheese and the Worms lived hundreds of years apart, however they exhibit a variety of similarities in their endeavors in reading. Both the Queen and Menocchio were reintroduced to the world of reading by a "guide" at a later age in life and their newfound passions lead to general disapproval from their surroundings for failing to fulfill their appropriate roles as a public figure and obedient slave, respectably. This disapproval ultimately leads to the demise of both characters with Menocchio being burned at the stake and the Queen abdicating – essentially ceasing to exist in her primary role, and metaphorically passing on. The Queen from the Uncommon reader was intelligent and well read, "but liking books was something she left to other people." The overall apathy in life stemmed from the belief, that reading as a hobby involved preferences, and "preferences had to be avoided; preferences excluded people." Her introduction to the traveling library and Norman Seakins sets her on a lifelong journey of reading. After hiring Norman as her "amanuensis", the Queen quickly became attached to the "comforting pile of books she had got used to finding on her bedside table" and began exploring the literary world through the eyes of Norman with just some deviation of his proposed readings. Similarly, Menocchio's reading choices and habits were not cultivated by his own mind, but rather a collective effort of his social ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Different Morals, Attitudes, and Goals with Changing... As generations come and go, I've noticed that each generation has grown up with different morals, attitudes, and goals for their life. Which puts a gap on all these generations, each generation is very distinct in their own ways. With each new generation being shaped and molded by the previous one, by offering more and more to help them. Now when you look at my generation now and the new one slowly coming up as well, you can see that we have been turned into a selfish, lazy, and even rude generation. If you look back on our older generations, they were never handed anything. Everything they wanted they had to work hard for an even struggle doing it. In this day and age it seems all anyone looks for is hand–outs, no one wants to work hard for anything and achieve it. Everyone looks for the shortcuts through life, when there are none. Another reason why things are so much easier for this generation is the new technology we have available. With all the new technology and so much help from our previous generations, it has gave this generation a different attitude and not so much in a good way. This generation's attitude has been infected with laziness, selfishness, and greed. It seems that most people in my generation today is very and only self– focused. They are all worried about how much money they can make and care about only what they want, and how quick they can obtain it. I feel as though previous generations have made our life so much easier, we take it for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. The Potential Influences Of Attitude And Attitude Change Attitudes are conceptualised as stable entities or temporary constructions (Bohner and Dickel, 2011). The following article moves on to describe in greater detail the potential influences of attitude and attitude change with the aim of highlighting possible reasoning behind these. Furthermore, to define a particular attitude as a 'stable entity' is to suggest that one's attitude is derived from a preconceived idea or memory. To the contrary, a 'temporary construction' is to construct an attitude in an instant following a particular event or stimulus. Whilst Visser and Mirabile (2004) claim that attitudes are a stable entity, and in contrast Shwarz (2007) believes attitudes are a temporary construction, Eagly and Chaiken (2007) take a moderate stance by defining attitudes as a psychological tendency, expressed by evaluating a particular entity with some degree of favour or disfavour. To further investigate attitude change, the topic used as stimulus for this study is cannabis use. Cannabis use is progressively developing a controversial reputation in todays' society. Research has shown that on one hand, some of the strongest evidence for marijuana's therapeutic potential derives from treating long term illnesses such as multiple sclerosis by providing highly reported pain relief (Kmietowicz, 2005). On the other, frequent cannabis use predicts later depression and anxiety (Moore et al., 2007), and poses an increased risk of psychosis and schizophrenia (Kmietowicz, 2005). ... Americans report that they do indeed use the media as a source of information about nutrition, and that television (72%) and magazines (58%) are relied upon more often for nutritional guidance than are family and friends (17%). (The American Dietetic Association, http://www.eatright.org) At the same time, many adults also feel that the media contain information that is often confusing and contradictory. In one recent study, adults who reported more confusion and skepticism about nutrition messages in the media also were more likely to eat a fat– laden diet.( Patterson RE, Satia JA, Kristal AR, Neuhouser ML, Drewnowski A, 2001) The authors of the study speculated that the proliferation of media information may be contributing to a nutrition backlash among certain subgroups of people. 2. Communication Theories by Werner Joseph Severin Essay Werner Joseph Severin explored communication theories on a wide range through this book, and as our lives are based entirely on communication persuasion is used daily in different forms, based on different theories, aiming at changing our attitudes and directing them towards the desired outcome, therefore chapter 8 "theories of persuasion" focused on persuasion. As being exposed to new information every day and changing our attitudes accordingly persuasion has reached its goal, for example, if you like something and new information you have been exposed to changed your attitude towards it, then this is a successful persuasion communication. Persuasion can affect our beliefs as will, as what you believe to be true can be altered by a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The research involved a number of variables that are manipulated very carefully to note there effects. Additionally, according to Hovland attitudes are learned and are changed through the same process of learning. The experimental section of the research branch of the war department's information and education division evaluated studies of films already existing, and had experimental studies where two versions of the same film were compared, the second type of research set the way for the rest of the attitude change research. The first task that this section took upon as evaluating the first four films of a series of films called "why we fight", which was designed to motivate American soldiers to fight in the war. This research became part of the evidence suggesting that strong held attitudes are less likely to change because of one mass communication message. On the top of that researchers began then to examine attitude change due to the cognitive process, which means that receivers of the message actively think about the message and change their attitude. But more recent theories reveal that a number of variables working together at the same time results in attitude change. furthermore, to change attitudes there are specific techniques to follow, the first technique is the one–sided and two–sided messages, which is basically either presenting one side of the message ... Freshman year changed my whole outlook on high school. I started hanging with the wrong people and started getting very big–headed. I started to not catch the freshman bus because I was so used to waking up late and my mom used to have to go to school so she wasn't really on me like that. Towards the middle of the semester I started slacking due to my choices, friend, and feeling like I didn't have to do anything. • 78. Example Of Social Judgement Theory Social Judgement Theory In the discourses of everyday human interaction, messages are crafted, communicated, received, and responded to. Social Judgement Theory argues that how the recipient of a message perceives and interprets a message, involves a process of judgment and effect that is based on the recipient's ego (attitude) and anchoring position (opinion) about the topic. This process is key to the resulting assimilation, rejection, or persuasion of that message. Where does this theory come from and how does it work? This paper will explore how Social Judgement Theory was developed and is described, along with providing an evaluation and example of the theory in practice. The Development Background Social Judgement Theory is a theory of persuasion and attitude change. It was developed by the work Muzafer Sherif and Carl Hovland in 1961. The central figure in the development of this theory was Muzafer Sherif. Originating from Turkey, he is considered one of the founders of social psychology. He is best known for his research on the autokinetic effect in the 1950's, which describes the illusion that a small and stationary pinpoint of light in a dark room actually moves. Using this same effect, he applied it to the way we perceive messages and change our beliefs and positions over time. Carl Hovland was considered an early communications theorist. He is best known for his work on attitudes and social communications. He was a former Yale University Professor and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
