Basketball was created in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith in Massachusetts. It was originally played with a soccer ball and evolved to include specialized basketballs. There are five standard positions in basketball - point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center - each with distinct offensive and defensive responsibilities. 3. Basketball Positions
• Point Guard : usually the fastest player on the
team, organizes the team's offense by controlling
the ball
• Shooting Guard : creates a high volume of shots
on offense
• Small Forward: often primarily responsible for
scoring points
• Power forward: plays offensively often with their
back to the basket
• Center uses height and size to score (on offense),
to protect the basket closely (on defense)
