The legend of Martisor tells the story of how Spring, in the form of a young girl, helps save a snowdrop flower that has been covered by snow. When Winter sees this, she tries to freeze and destroy the flower. Spring manages to save the flower by covering it with her wounded hands, and a drop of her blood falls and thaws the snowdrop, bringing it back to life. Thus, Spring defeats Winter. The red and white colors of the Martisor symbolize Spring's blood over the snow.
