2. Santo Domingo de la Calzada is a
town and a Spanish municipality in the
autonomous community of La Rioja,
located on the banks of the river Oja.
LOCATION
3. Santo Domingo de la Calzada was already a small village in the 11th
century. Tradition says that among the many Compostela pilgrims who
stopped in this town to venerate the relics of Santo Domingo de la Calzada,
once arrived here a German couple with eighteen-year-old son named
Hugonell.
The girl working at the Inn where they stayed fell in love of the young
Hugonell, but indifferent the boy, decided to take revenge. She put a silver cup
in the luggage of the young and when the pilgrims continued their journey, girl
reported the theft to the Corregidor.
4. The boy was found guilty and hanged.
Parents exiting route to Santiago de Compostela, they wanted to
see their hanged son, and when they came to the place where he was,
they heard the voice of the son announcing them that Santo
Domingo (the saint whose name the village had) had preserved his
life. They went immediately to the Corregidor of the City and told
him the prodigy. Unbelieving Corregidor replied that their son was
alive as the rooster and hen he was to eat. At that precise moment the
rooster and hen jumping from the plate and began to sing.

6. Here the legend says that in Santo Domingo of
the Road sang the rooster and hen after be roasted.
