Gay-le-kasla… that means Welcome in Kʷak̓ʷala (kwa-kwala), the Indigenous language spoken by the Kwakwakaʼwakw (kwa kwa kay wok).
My name is Kate and I am part of the HR Team for School District 72 and I’m excited to share some information about our district with you.
First I want to take a moment and acknowledge that SD72 operates on the traditional territories of the Laichwiltach, Klahoose and K’omoks first nations. We honour our relationship with these First Nations, the Homalco First nation and other first Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples who reside in these territories.
LOGO
To give you a sense of our organization’s culture. I am going share our logo story with you as I think that will you a good sense of what we value and what guides us at SD72
Our logo was designed by mul-leed-zas Mulidzas – Curtis Wilson, a First Nations artist, born, raised, and educated in Campbell River and our school district.
The salmon is an important symbol for the (kwa kwa kay wok) Nations and represents dependability and renewal. It conveys the importance of family, friendships, and strength in numbers. Just as our schools and community are rich with diversity, there are many different types of salmon.
In the center of the salmon is a salmon egg, which represents children and our future generations. It is encircled by the salmon to symbolize the care, guidance, and responsibility our Board of Education and district staff know that we are entrusted with.
Our logo embraces the natural environment we are lucky to be surrounded by, the strength of our relationship with the Indigenous peoples that reside within this territory and a sense of belonging for all.
Here’s a synopsis of our district, we are small but mighty.
We have 900 employees; 5600 students from k to 12;
12 elementary schools; 2 middle schools; and 2 secondary schools;
We also have Robron which is an alternate learning centre that provides eBlend which is our teacher-supported homeschool alternative for students in kindergarten to grade 9 AND, Robron also offers in-person programming for students in grades 8-12 through a variety of other programs.
Our District is also more than just the city of Campbell River. It extends north to Sayward and south to Oyster River, as well as encompasses several islands: Quadra Island, Cortes Island and Surge Narrows. And in my personal opinion, some of the most beautiful areas in Canada.
This map hopefully gives you a refresher on where Vancouver Island is located….
And this map hopefully gives you a better sense of where we are located on the island and the large geographical size of our district. The circles denote where our schools are located and you can see the majority are in Campbell River.
With the waters of Discovery Passage at our shoreline and mountains as a backdrop, Campbell River is located on the east coast of northern Vancouver Island. It’s the third largest city on the island. For people coming from a large city, it’s probably best described as a town though. We have all the essentials, but it’s by no means big city living here. Not much nightlife but a great place for families. But we aren’t so remote as you are only a few hours from big cities like, Nanaimo, Vancouver (by ferry) or Victoria down island.
Campbell River offers a balanced lifestyle surrounded by nature.
I moved here from Vancouver and never looked back. No shade to city life but I left the traffic, pollution, and high city prices behind. People love the fishing, hiking, biking, ocean, mountain sports and the relative affordability here.
I’m going to start this video now which will also help to highlight some benefits to living and working here:
We can occasionally get a good windy storm but for the most part it’s mild weather.
For the most part, Housing is more affordable than big cities in Canada
Wellness – we offer discounted fitness passes; wellness apps; lifespeak
I’m going to start this video now which will also help to highlight some benefits to living and working here:
So what else makes SD72 Great? Why choose us
Wellness is a priority for us, like I mentioned we offer fitness passes to employees and are always looking for more opportunities and initiatives that promote a balanced lifestyle.
CAREER GROWTH - As a small district, there’s simply less competition to put it frankly for opportunities and we truly recognize that supporting our internal talent is of the utmost importance. We also place a lot of emphasis on pro-d. There are always lots of opportunities for collaboration between teachers across different schools.
Leadership - Again, being small… you will see the Superintendent out and about engaging with all levels of staff. Our Superintendent is also very just very approachable in general and wants to take employees’ feedback and ideas. For example, he moved from the traditional corner office with a view, to an office right at the front of our office so he could be more accessible to everyone.
Regarding Reconciliation - I think nowadays, people want to work in organizations that reflect their values more than ever and so I am extremely proud of the reconciliation work that our staff is doing everyday and our Indigienous Ed dept is really at the forefront in publishing in-house resources to help all of us on our path to reconciliation. It’s a part of our strategic plan and put into action in many ways such offering indigenous bilingual language programs.
Outdoor Learning – We live in a beautiful place so our schools often take advantage of the opportunity to use outdoor classrooms.
To give a bit more info about our Indigenous Education, they are an amazing resource and benefit to working with our district. You can see listed the many ways that they partner with staff in our District to enhance the classroom experiences and learning outcomes for all students.
22% of our students self-identify as indigenous and we are committed to improving Indigenous student achievement, increasing opportunities, and honouring Indigenous world views and perspectives.
To give you a bit more background on what guides us I want to share our learning beliefs:
All of these beliefs are defined in more detail as well to help make them actionable for everyone.
Our vision is to create an environment and experiences where students feel:
• Inspired, motivated, excited to learn and eager to accept challenges;
• Respect, acceptance, a sense of belonging, and free to be themselves;
• Confident and successful
We have two French Immersion Elementary schools (École des Deux Mondes and École Willow
Point)
École Phoenix Middle School, a dual track school offers a highly successful late French
Immersion program.
I want to take a moment to highlight French teaching here in Campbell River as it’s another area we are really proud of. In our district French is for anyone that is interested. It’s inclusive and we have a diverse range of students from all backgrounds.
The Campbell River School District has offered a highly successful Late French Immersion program since 1986 and we have higher than provincial averages for completion for late and early immersion
French teachers are a small family within the broader school setting. Even though they are integrated, there is cohesion there between them as a group. They learn together and support each other so it’s a really great team to join.
Most school districts in BC host their careers website on MAF. So the great thing about that is you can make your profile once and then share it out to all the School districts you want to apply to, saving you time.
Your application should include: cover letter, resume, practicum reports, transcripts, and reference letters if possible.
Regarding TQS, it stands for Teacher Qualification Service and it places teachers in the BC public school system into a category for pay purposes based only on their education. If you intend to work in any public school in BC, you must apply to the TQS.
3 Professional References-email and phone numbers. We do not accept colleagues, friends or family as references
Recent Graduates include: Faculty Advisor, School Advisor(s) and Principal/Vice principal and/or your most recent previous employer
Similarly the Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) -- Certifies teachers for both the BC public school system and the BC independent school system. All questions related to teacher certification must be directed to the Teacher Regulation Branch: Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) -- Certifies teachers for both the BC public school system and the BC independent school system. If your registration is pending, we can still hire you. You need to be fully certified but there is a transition piece for when you are waiting to receive your certification, and our district is able to offer conditional positions during that time where you are waiting for your certification.
