Reaction Paper 2: The Matrix
Length: 2 single spaced pages plus reference page / 100 points
For this paper, you will explore the process of communicative informatics, the social shaping of
communication technology, represented in the movie, The Matrix. You will analyze how the
characters using communication technology influence each other and their social worlds. You can
extend this to how the movie exemplifies our current society and its uses of communication
technology.
You may apply any technological and communication concepts, theories, and/or perspectives
from class material to develop your analysis. Have a central thesis that is a major theme or
concept from course materials. Overarching themes to help guide your analysis are
Communicative Informatics level/sphere (data-base analytics, algorithmic reasoning, post-mass
media feedback loop), third places, media naturalness, presence, flow, usability, and user
engagement.
To help facilitate your analysis here are some questions to consider.
1. New technology implies changing social interaction patterns and social norms. How do
the characters influences and mold technology to fit their needs? Are they active
audiences? How are they part of online communities, communities online, audiences,
and/or third places?
2. Discuss how the characters influences their social world(s) using Communicative
Informatics level/sphere 2, Network Systems & Human Computer Interaction/Interface,
and then at level/sphere 3, Communicative; Information & Communication
Technologies. The system learns about users through gathering data in databases; while, the user
can learn to use the tailored information to his or her advantage.
3. In what ways does technology foster information transfer, communication, and social
interaction? Is it natural? Is it mediated or face-to-face? How does media naturalness
explain social interaction though technology in the matrix? What role might proximity
play in increasing user engagement?
Be creative and have fun with it. Remember to integrate readings & concepts from class.
Support your claims with examples from the movie. Cite sources. Here is a list of detailed

Operation management at PepsiCo

analysis of the effects of operation management practices on
performance. Intech. International Journal of Engineering
Business Mangement. DOI: 10.5772/56919.
Of tenet focus in this article are the optimization techniques
which are often adopted in operation management of many
companies especially the manufacturing companies. The model
used in the article is based on an approach known as Structural
Equation Modelling (SEM). This plus other concepts help the
authors to present a succinct analysis of common operation
management practices on performance.
Mahadevan, B. (2010). Operations management: Theory and
practice. Upper Saddle River: Pearson.
This is one of the most commonly used books in teaching and
learning various theories and practices in operation
management. The book provides vast foundational information
on the theories, applications, and implications. The integrated
strategy used in PepsiCo is well discussed in the book thus
using this as the source will help in analyzing the strategy as
used in the company. This book can also be used to complement
information from the articles as they tend to summarize
operation management theories.

Proceedings of the 14th Annual Conference of the Production
and Operations Management Society, POM – 2003, April 4 – 7,
2003, Savannah, GA. University of New Haven, West Haven.
This article provides a summary of various operation
management applications. Simulation is very well analyzed as it
was an emerging technology for managing various simulation
projects. The authors state that the technology can be used by
managers to curb certain operational challenges in their
companies. Successes and failures of application of the
technology are also well discussed.

Company Selection
· What company will you research and what makes it interesting
from an Operations Management perspective?
A company is a legal entity made up of a connotation of people,
be they natural, legal, or a mixture of both, for carrying on a
profitable or industrial enterprise. There are lots of companies
available in almost every city. The name of company that I am
research on is PepsiCo.
Introduction
PepsiCo is the second biggest player in the global food and
beverage manufacturing. To maintain this position, PepsiCo’s
operations management (OM) practices must efficiently address
business needs in the 10 strategic decision areas. These decision
areas refer to the aspects of business that need to be
rationalized together to achieve optimal presentation. PepsiCo’s
continuing international growth and development also warrant
continuing reforms in such operations management performs.
However, PepsiCo’s operations management approaches are
generally suitable for the global association.
Operations management refers to the management of business
practices to make the highest level of efficiency likely within an
organization. As PepsiCo is a very big company of the world so
it is important to discuss about its Operational Management
Perspective. This management concerned with changing
materials and labor into goods and services as professionally as
possible to maximize the profit of an association.
PepsiCo has an integrated approach to the 10 strategic decisions
of operations management (OM). This method considers
variations in PepsiCo’s business areas and markets, as well as
different productivity necessities based on product, market
8. circumstances, and other variables.
· What do you already know about this topic and what research
questions do you expect to answer?
PepsiCois an American international food, snack and drink
company headquartered in Purchase, New York. PepsiCo has
welfares in the manufacturing, marketing and distribution of
grain-based food, beverages and other products.
Operations management involves applying resources from staff,
resources, equipment and technology. Operations managers
obtain, develop and deliver goods to customers based on client
wants and the aptitudes of the company.
While researching on that company and its operational
management there are some of question that will come in front.
1.What are some characteristics of operations management that
make it a core business function?
Management in very important to run any company. Operations
management in a service setting would focus on insuring that
workers are sufficiently trained, that customer service locations
are equipped as wanted and are safe for employees and the
community, that services are revised as verbalized by customer
input or competitive forces.
2.What is the difference between productivity and efficiency?
The main differences between these two are”
Businesses often measure productivity by output during similar
time periods. For example, if you produce 1,000 units one week
and 1,100 units the next, you are more productive the second
week.
Efficiency relates to the quality of your work, which might
include generating output with less waste, using fewer capitals
or spending less cash.
· What kinds of sources (for example, company website, annual
report, government websites, and library articles) do you plan to
use for research?
When we talk about resources then there is lots of stuff about
9. PepsiCo on internet as well as on company’s website. PepsiCo
is an international brand so it is very famous. Articles and
annual profits about the company also available on different
places. For this research, I would like to use company’s official
website and another site related to topic on internet.
· Why are you interested in this topic?
There are lots of interesting facts about the company. The most
important is that this brand is used all over the world. Everyone
likes the products of PepsiCo because it was also good in
quality wise.
It was the first soft drink company which introduced two liter
bottles. PepsiCo has nearly 500 partners so it is huge brand.
These are some of the reason for choosing that topic.
