3. HISTORY

LSU, Louisiana State University, opened January 2, 1860.
• William Tecumseh Sherman was Superintendent.
• It closed for the Civil War. After several false starts, it opened
again in 1877
• LSU was originally in Pineville, LA until it burned down in 1865. It
reopened in Baton Rouge in 1869.
• LSU has several other campuses throughout Louisiana. Including 2
medical schools.

• The LSU mascot, Mike the Tiger, is kept in a pen in
the back of the stadium. Before home games, he’s
placed in a cage near the visiting team’s locker room
to intimidate as they enter the field.
