2. Inheritance
This is when a new programme comes straight after a successful show of
roughly the same genre and ‘inherit’ their audience by assuming the audience
will stay on the same channel after the show ends and therefore watch the
new programme as well. In this example both shows are reality TV
programmes so will attract a similar audience and The Only Way is Essex is a
very popular reality programme and audiences are likely to leave the channel
on and watch the new series as well.
3. Pre-Echo
This is when a new programme comes straight before a successful TV show in
hopes that the audience will tune in early and watch the new show as well. In
this case EastEnders is a very popular soap that is set in East London and the
Pre-echoing show is a programme about Banksy's artwork on the streets of
London so catches audiences with a shared interest of London.
4. Hammocking
Hammocking is when a new series is programmed between two successful
shows with a similar genre in hopes that the audience will keep the channel
on between the shows and watch the new programme. In this case all
programmes are to do with houses and properties and therefore will all
attract a similar audience.
