Sangita sharwale
Sangita Govind Sharwale living in the Jawalga Village, Taluka: Deoni, District Latur. The farmer and her husband tell about
the story of their starting days of marriage. They mention that there was this new life which they had started together
on one hand and then the extreme poverty on the other hand. The couple had lost that 125 Acre of land which was
acquired by the government under the scheme wherein a Sathawan Talaw (Storage tank) was constructed as a
provision for the uncertain rain fall.
The farmer shows us their farms where apart from sugarcane and Chickpea the farmer has converted 1 acre land into a
complete plot to produce vegetables. Sangita tai is extremely hardworking and feels that it was indeed her hard work
which she was able to sustain so many years. Farming as a profession is extremely difficult in terms of the fact that it is
highly dependent on rainfalls and requires persistent efforts to work in fields in extreme weather conditions.
Sangita tai shows in her farms a new variety of tomato. They are sold by the name of Vaishali Tomatoes in the market.
This is one area of tangible change that the JalKumbh has brought. She says these tomatoes are cultivated only with
commercial point of view. Though the nutrient value of this produce is low it is big in size and weights more. The target
customer is indeed the people engaged in hotels and food processing business who require tomatoes on large scale.
She also mentions that she is producing beetroot along with this plant since she feels if the buyer is very much keen into
the nutrient value he/she will procure the beetroot as well. One carton of this cost them approximately Rs 125-150 when
sold in LS. She credits the entire success of these Vaishali tomatoes to the construction of JalKumbh which was
constructed in their farm, using JCB.

Sakharbai
This is the story of Sakharbai which in literal translation means a Sugar women. The story starts with the fact that the
farmer is off the field and her pet Moti, which is a local breed is guarding the farm and the house. Sakharbai Laxman
Thurbhule. Village: Gojwada; Block / Tehsil: Washi; District: Osmanabad. The farmer was not on the field but was
working in her neighbours field. She was there to pluck fresh vegetables for her daughters who she was suppose to
meet a local village function. She shows the variety of plantation that she has done in her little 1 acres farm. Seema tai
who is the SSP team member accompanying us describes the sad incidence of how she and her sister both lost their
husband on the same day on the same day.
She describes how it is very difficult to ask people to visit your farms to offer you a helping hand without you yourself
going to their farms is something unethical she finds. Deeply she is touched upon by the fact that initially they had to
carry water from sources around 3 kms which would be more required when others in the village would come to work.
The farmer then shows us the extent of her farm and explains how she has planted Tulsi, Alovera, etc as they were
taught in the training conducted by Swayam Shikshan Prayog. She then unfolds and shows us a Ghamelam which is
fully loaded with vegetables. She says I have brought it for my daughter, whom I may meet at a wedding that she is
proposed to go to after this visit. We ask her about the most favorite crop cultivated by using the water from the
Jalkumbh. She confirms it as Mustard. She smashes and shows a crop which she has preserved from the last harvest.
Sakharbai is a completely uneducated woman and has no way or mean to understand any economic transactions. She
rubs and shows the Mustard and measures the produce as Onjal instead when the team asks if the produce from
similar such plant would it yield to 100gm to 200 gm.
The most striking feature of the story is when she claims that they have a system called Sawda-Bawda which means
that people will come to her farm to help her, while she will go to their farms to reciprocate. She says seeing our
JalKumbh now it is easy for me to ask people to come who find it a sense of nearness to source making it easy for
access.

Shubhangi Sunil Kulkarni
This is the story of Mrs Shubhangi Sunil Kulkarni residing from the Village Bawi, Block / Tehsil: Washi; District:
Osmanabad. Shubhangi tai stays in a nuclear family with her husband and 2 kids. She shares her story of how they were
once forced to leave their village and go to city and how it was their farms that were calling them. The farmer due to
certain incidence had migrated to Nandur which is a place in Pune to earn livelihood. But for her farms were calling that
she returned back to her village and started farming.
The farmer shows her farm surrounded by the newly planted saplings of Mango, Coconut and Ram phal. She shows use
the source of water as the well dug in her farm which is 2 kms away from her plant. She has installed the Jalkumbh and
apart from providing water to her farms the major thing that she has taken up is producing Azolla for her cattle. Azolla is a
fern plant which serves as a rich source of Calcium for the cattle. The production of Azolla requires availability of water
which the farmer says was made available by the JalKumbh. The major benefit of Azolla is that apart from being a rich
source of Calcium for the cattle it helps and supports during the recovery period of the cattle.
Her future projection is to plant as many mango and coconut plants on the sides of her farm. So that her kids and their
kids will be able to have the fruits of those trees.

Kalawati Vidya Wadkar and Lata Patil living in the Mahadeowadi Village, Taluka: Deoni, District Latur. Both these women
farmers come together to tell their stories. They both live in the same village and tell the story about their village which
was initially a land owned by only 1 person in old times. There old house is towards the approach area of the village and is
always crowed by people of the village who often come here to receive their relatives and friends they say. Having guest
in house is very well rooted in our customs they say as they mention ‘Aterthi Devo Bhawa’ ie guest are manifestation of
God.
These two women tell the story of how they constructed the Soak Pits together. At their respective locations, trenches
were dug and the construction took them around 8 days. They constructed a proper circular Soak Pits in brick work and
concrete. Laying each layer of Coarse aggregate, fine aggregate and brick bats. The major change that they see is that
with the construction of soak pits, the village is now a cleaner and more pleasant place to be. Since most of the houses
have farms connected the access to farms were always a flooded with waste water running from household wastage.
Especially in the mornings which were a confluence of peak timings both for the men to leave for farms to work and for
children in the house to take bath. This was always challenging aspect for women in the family who had to balance out at
either ends. With the construction of soak pits the cleanliness aspect is self taking care is what they feel.
Also, the women farmer mentions about the JalKumbh. Their baby steps in the form of introducing the vegetable
cultivation along with Tur and Soybean will definitely lead to a paradigm shift in the cropping pattern which will enhance
the vegetable intake in this particular region is what they believe in.

Shubhnagi More
Shubhangi Kailas Gore is the women beneficiary of this story who believes in setting examples by doing it herself.
Residing in the Indapur Village;Tehsil: Washi, District: Osmanabad this women is a hero in real sense. Shubhangi tai is
the SSP leader in this ward. She became the first in the block to install the soakpits.
The Gore family has an extended family which resides in Pune. She mentions that we jointly built a new house,
developed our space to store farm produce, equipments, etc. However, whenever we had guest coming to us from Pune
we would find it odd to see open sewer flowing before our doors. She shows the adjacent plot to her house which open
and used generally by cattle to rest. She mentions the whole scenario of cattle waste and household drainage in front of
her house which was the situation before construction of this soak pits. The fact that drainage was flowing before their
house would make the whole situation uncomfortable for her to invite anyone to her place.
Being the fighter in the true sense that she is Shubhangi tai not only installed the soak pits in her house but also worked
with the Gram-Panchayat to promote this. She believes that by doing it herself she will be able to set an example for her
fellow villagers. Shubhanigi tai even learnt from the Gram-Panchayat about the MNREGA and ensure that the work of
digging for the soak pits, constructing the soak-pits was funded by this scheme. She says when people learnted about
this in one day 54 fellow villagers approached SSP and started the work of Soak-pits at their place. This she feels was
because she did things by herself and then set an example for others. Each fellow villager who constructed the soak-pit
got a grant of Rs 2200/- under the MNREGA scheme.
Shubhangi tai sees the difference in the village, she shows the rangoli she has put before her house which is now very
much clean and approachable than before. She wants to see the same thing in other places as well in her village.

Her house where she has lives is a very unstable and she fears that if heavy rains or winds may affect it. However, since it

the farm. She said that after the harvest was over and sent to market it was only then when they could bring the JCB for
digging the JalKumbh. She also shows the soak pits in her house and tells us that it was instrumental in bringing in

in a local dielicet, ‘ Prayatnanti vaaluche kan ragadita teel hi khaali gale.’ Which means where there is a will there is a
way.

Shreedevi Suryavanshi
Shreedevi Shankar Suryavanshi living in the Wadgaon Village, Taluka: Nilanga, District Latur. The farmer had only
completed her 10th grade when she was married and moved to this village. She remembers her asking Meera Tai who
was the local Syavan Shikshan Prayog Leader at a meeting where information regarding various developments in farming
were discussed. Upon hearing these the farmer was excited to understand how can she contribute to this.
The farmer had a meager land of 2 Acre which was approximately 1 to 1.5 kms away from her residence. Knowing the
importance, requirement of water and also after living with the fact that power cut was a usual scenario during day time,
Shreedevi tai, requested Svayam Shikshan Prayog to allow her to experiment JalKumbh in her farm.
She says, it has be only 1-2 months that the construction of the JalKumbh is over. They constructed the JalKumbh using
a JCB. After the marking on the ground was over, it took 1 man-day to complete 10 X 10 pit. Immediately in the following
week, the farmer laid the Tarpaulin sheet and filled the JalKumbh with water.
The farmer was completely dependent upon the rain and electricity before the construction of JalKumbh, so they never
dared to plant anything besides Soyabean and Chickpea. After the construction of the JalKumbha it is for the first time
that the farmer has planted watermelon in farm. She has also planted some vegetable like onion, Ginger, etc so that the
same may be used for her daily requirements.
Shreedevi tai mentions her regards to SSP for the training provided in for construction and maintenance of the
JalKumbh. This and other trainings given by SSP she says are proving to be a source of constant inspiration for her as
well as for her other friends.
