2. Narrative
Technical codes such as action codes are going to be
used to set up the narrative such as in the action codes
of the boy getting taken away and approached by the
stranger (who is the kidnapper), this showing the
audience that the story is going to be something along
the lines of a kidnapping story.
This will also generate enigma codes such as “What is
he going to do with the boy.” This being even more
effective as my opening sequence is a cliff-hanger.
3. Characters
• The way technical codes were going to be used to set
up characters will also be through action codes. I will
set it up by using action codes such as the mother
and son interacting and communicating, this to clearly
demonstrate to the audience that this is a mother with
her son, they will be easily be able to establish and
recognize that.
• When it comes to the kidnapper, I am planning to
keep him quite hidden and unknown, not revealing his
face. This will create enigma codes for the audience
such as “Who is he”, this puzzling and working as a
brain teaser for the audience.
4. Location
• The location will be set up clearly by the use of camera
shots and angles, one of them being an establishing and a
wide shot (this being an action code) as these camera
angles are used to set the scene and setting.
• These action codes being the establishing shot and also
the wide shots will clearly demonstrate to the audience
that this is a beach location (there are also scenes in an
arcade).
5. Genre
• The genre will be set up by me using and
including codes and conventions of a
stereotypical thriller, this making it easy for
the audience to identify what type of film
they are watching and also to appeal to
audience pleasures as they will be expecting
thriller conventions as they are watching a
thriller.
