2. THRILLER GENRE CONVENTIONS
• The genre of thriller is broad and has many sub-genres which can entertain many people. To able to target a
specific audience for the main task we created a crime thriller this was targeted at a male audience .
• Narrative theories, there are five widely accepted theories used in media production those are; Tzvetan
odorov , Levi-Strauss ,Roland Barthes, Vladdimir Propp and Syd Field.
• The most commonly used Narrative Theory in the Genre of thriller is that of Roland Barthe this is where a
story moves forward through a series of codes, the audience understand these code. The use of enigma
codes can create cliff-hangers where the audience can enjoy the uncertainty but aslo get the satisfaction of
figuring out the puzzle .
• The use of camera work or the cinematography in thriller is used to express the mood of the piece. The use
of a long shot of the would allow the audience to establish an understanding of the setting of a piece. The
camera work can also help create tension and the use of a low on angle on a protagonist can help represent
power and authority.
• The use of SFX in thrillers is usually diegetic as this gives a sense of realism towards a piece of media and can
allow the audience to have a better conection and understading of what is happeing as the SFX are mainly
common everyday sounds.
• The misce en scene in thrillers is vital, the lighting in a thriller is usally natral lighting but when builidnig
suspense for example would be darker. Props are important as they can help create puzzles for the audience
to solve
3. CAMERA CONVENTIONS IN OUR MAIN
TASK
• In our crime thriller we used a variety of camera shots and techniques to
conform to the conventions of thriller. The use of multiple long shots in
the opening few shots allows the audience to have a understanding of
the location and who the protagonist is within the opening sequence .
• The use of a long shots sets the mood that protagonist is trying to be
un-seen but also gives a feeling to the audience that he is being
watched/followed, we tried to keep the camera as steady as possible
however the use of our handheld tracking shot challenges the forms of
thrillers as It shaky and has a slight cross over with horror genre however
the misce en scene of our piece and gives a suggestion that our
protagonist is being followed.
5. SFX AND MUSIC CONVENTIONS IN OUR
MAIN TASK
• From the very out set of opening sequence our sound track is in the
background this is non-digetic sound track which sets a tempo to our
main task. This common in the opening sequence of a thriller as it
allows the audience to understand the stature of the protagonist as the
music fits the characters walking style and clothing etc.
• From our fade to black from the GCP logo there is train station sound
this is still allow the audience to have an understanding of what they are
about to see this known as a L-cut and editing technique often used in
thrillers to build anticipation.
6. MISCE EN SCENE CONVENTIONS IN OUR
MAIN TASK
• Our protagonist is dressed in black with a cap this suggest to the
audience that he does not want to be seen and wears a cap to cover his
face. This is one of the first codes for our audience to figure out as they
are probably questioning why dressed that way and done commonly in
thrillers
• The use of computers in the ‘dark office room’’ towards the end of our
opening sequence, the green coding on the screen suggest that the
protagisnt is at a high level of computing but due to the dark lighting it
also suggest that he is up to criminal activity.
