The giant alca (Pinguinus impennis) was the largest species of alca, an extinct flightless seabird. Unlike modern alcas, it lacked fully developed wings and was unable to fly, though it was a strong swimmer and diver. Intense hunting for its large eggs and meat, as well as overfishing depleting its food sources, led to its extinction, as humans found it to be an appealing food source despite its inability to escape on land or sea.
