Bears are large omnivorous mammals that eat both plants and meat. Black bears in eastern USA are more likely to forage for food at night, though they may sleep at any time. As summer ends, bears prepare for winter hibernation as temperatures fall and days shorten by beginning to hibernate, sleeping through the colder months until conditions improve in spring.
