1. Breaking the glass ceiling
Equality and women’s rights are worldwide issues these days. But they are not just hot
topics. These matters should be thoroughly approached according to most experts.
Public and private organizations alike show their public concern on the lack of presence
of women in an endless number of fields.
Take STEM degrees, for instance. Women’s rate at STEM degrees (Science,
Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) is worrying lower than men’s. Educative
authorities blame methodology and affirm in degrees such as Programming (Computer
Science) the method of “try and error” is the key. But most women tend to prefer
security and a less risky methodology. And so, they’d choose Medicine or Nursing but
avoid Engineering or Programming.
Another field that is usually tabled is the world of sport. Male protagonists are
omnipresent in football, tennis, or basketball. Do we really believe their effort is more
rewarding than that of their female counterparts? Notwithstanding the fact of income,
sportsmen lead most publicity campaigns, appear in a limitless number of pages on
newspapers or magazines and even viewers value them more.
With hindsight, one could argue that the situation of women has been improving
steadily during the last decades and throughout the globe. But not all women agree on
this. Some still denounce the inequality at basic day-to-day routines such as the sharing
of housework. How many of our contemporaries would be able to work from 8 in the
morning to 5 in the evening, getting home just to start another kind of job? The latter
entails doing the washing up, dusting, vacuuming, cooking, ordering bedrooms
(wardrobes included) and so on and so forth. And one wonders whether men would be
able to do as many tasks during a day. Some of them, certainly. But others seem far
from reacting and taking action.
Thus, beyond usual topics on salary and women’s rights, equality could only be
achieved, as far as I see it, when every one of us assumes his/her accountability on
every day little issues. At work, at the public arena, or at home.
