MICHAEL JURGELLA OF ST. CLOUD STATE LEADS CAPITAL ONE
ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA® DIVISION II BASEBALL TEAM
AUSTIN, Texas – Senior catcher Michael Jurgella of St. Cloud State University headlines the 2015 Capital
One Academic All-America® Division II Baseball team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA).
Jurgella has been selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® of the Year award for Division II
baseball.
The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA
Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the
2014-15 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
A finance major, Jurgella has a 3.62 G.P.A. He is now a two-time first team Capital One Academic All-
America® selection after receiving first team honors in 2014, as well.
Jurgella led the Huskies to an historic 2015 season, as they climbed to number one in Division II. St. Cloud
State would end the year with a 54-5 ledger, dropping an 8-7 decision to Henderson State in 10 innings in the
Central Region championship game. The Huskies’ 54 wins were a school record, and included the Northern
Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season and tournament titles. It marked SCSU’s fifth Central Region
tournament appearance since 2010.
A native of Plover, Wisconsin, Jurgella was named both the 2015 National Collegiate Baseball Writers
Association and Daktronics/Division II CCA Central Region Player of the Year. He was also selected the NSIC
Player of the Year and was an All-NSIC first team choice after earning second team honors in 2014.
Jurgella ended the year ranked second on the team with a .399 batting average, good for sixth in the NSIC. In
addition, his .690 slugging percentage is third in the conference. He displayed plenty of power with 16 doubles,
a pair of triples, and 14 home runs, while driving in 68 runs. He ranks second in the NSIC in RBI and fourth in
home runs. He is also second in both hits (85) and runs (63).
In addition, Jurgella handled a pitching staff which led the NSIC and ranks fourth in Division II with a 2.71 ERA.
He threw out 11 of 29 runners attempting to steal (37.9 percent).
Eighteen of the 33 members of the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II baseball teams
have at least a 3.80 G.P.A., including four student-athletes who maintain a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. The 11
members of the first team have an average G.P.A. of 3.79.
Jurgella is one of four repeat performers on the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II
baseball team. Matthew Chavez of New Mexico Highlands University joined Jurgella on the first team a year
ago as the designated hitter, and is one of four infielders named to the 2015 first team. He is a senior from
Pasadena, California, with a 3.83 G.P.A. as a health & exercise sciences major.

Chavez played first base for the Cowboys, finishing second on the team with a .371 batting average with 18
doubles, three triples, and six home runs. He tied for the team lead in RBI with 41 and was second on the team
with seven stolen bases.
Chavez earned NCBWA honorable mention All-American accolades recently. In addition, he was an NCBWA
All-South Central Region selection at first base in 2015 (first team) and designated hitter in 2014 (second
team). He also earned second team American Baseball Coaches Association and Daktronics/ Division II CCA
All-South Central Region honors both years. He was an All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference selection in
2014 and ’15.
Kutztown University’s Brandon Martinez earned a spot on the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America®
NCAA Division II baseball second team after earning first team honors in 2014, the first Kutztown baseball
student-athlete to earn Academic All-America® accolades. The senior is a business administration major with
a 3.83 G.P.A. He was a 2014 PSAC Spring Top 10 recipient.
A native of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, Martinez was recently named Kutztown’s Male Senior Scholar Athlete of
the Year. He played centerfield for the Golden Bears. He is a two-time first team All-Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference East selection (2013 and ’14) and earned second team All-Atlantic Region honors in 2014
by the ABCA, NCBWA, and Daktronics. In 2015 he hit .287 with nine doubles, a triple and 15 RBI. He stole 13
bases after setting the Kutztown season record for steals a year ago with 35 in 36 attempts.
Truman State University senior Paul Trenhaile moves up from the third team to a spot on the 2015 Capital
One Academic All-America® NCAA Division II second team. A native of Hannibal, Missouri, he has a 3.48
G.P.A. as an accounting major with a minor in communications.
With Trenhaile as one of the catalysts, Truman State won its first Midwest Regional championship to reach the
NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. The Bulldogs have a 35-21 record after suffering a 3-1 loss in 11
innings to Mercyhurst University in their first game.
Trenhaile is second on the team with a .365 batting average while leading the Bulldogs in runs (46) and RBI
(45). He has 11 doubles, a triple and five home runs while stealing six bases. He has broken his own school
record for hits with 80. He ranks third in career batting average (.358) while holding Truman State career
records for RBI (129) and total bases (313).A former first baseman who moved to left field in 2015, Trenhaile
holds the school records for total chances (1,428) and putouts (1,324). He is also third in runs scored (128)
and fourth in career at bats (658) and doubles (34).
Trenhaile earned first team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors in 2015 after being named to the second
team a year ago. He was an honorable mention All-Mid America Intercollegiate Athletic Association pick in
2013. He was also recently selected Truman State’s Male Outstanding Senior Student Athlete. He was a first
team Daktronics/Division II CCA All-Midwest Region selection and earned ABCA and NCWBA second team
honors.
The rest of the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® first team includes pitchers Matthew Kaplanis of the
University of Indianapolis and Mercyhurst’s Jon Klein, infielders Christian Binger of Southwest Baptist
University, Stephen James of Ashland University, and California (Pa.) University’s Matt Peters, outfielders
Justin Harris of Emporia State University, Urbana University’s Matt Paculan, and Lee Sponseller of Ohio
Dominican University, and designated hitter Davis Richardson of Harding University.
The 11-member second team includes pitchers Luke Mould of the University of Alabama Huntsville and
Colorado Mesa University’s Ryan Reno, catcher Kyle Tisdale of Ohio Dominican, infielders Blake Edwards
of Columbus State University, Nick Spini of East Central University, East Stroudsburg University’s Jay
Young, and Grand Valley State University’s Kevin Zak, outfielder Jesse Jennings of the University of
Minnesota Crookston, and designated hitter Travis Smith of Northwood (Mich.) University.
