2. HYPOTHESES
• Men are still degrading towards/ about women
• Modern men are more focussed on women’s
appearances than their intelligence
• Questions are more frequently asked by women
than men now
3. METHODOLOGY
Which resources did you use, why, and how did you find them?
We used magazines (Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and Practical Parenting and
Pregnancy), and a book (Jackie).
Which resources seemed to be the most profitable and why?
Cosmopolitan and Jackie, because they provided old and new problem
pages.
Which resources were least profitable and why?
Vogue, because it was all about fashion, and PP&P, because there was
just tips and guides.
What other texts did you gather?
‘How Can We Get Them To The Dry Cleaners?’ and ‘I’m A Good Looking
Boy Who Can’t Get Girls’.
What were the reasons you selected the text you did?
It was more modern than the others, so gave more of a contrast to the
original text.
Why is your selected text a valid comparative text with your starter text
(e.g. similar audience, focused content, purpose etc?) - Explain your
rationale for choosing it.
The focus of the content has changed from brains to body.
4. SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS
Lexis – use of contractions and slang style language
in modern day problem page
Grammar – modern day text produces more shorter
sentences
Discourse structure – problem solution
5. SEMANTICS
1930’s text focuses on the brain of the woman
whereas the modern day text is focused on the
body of the woman
The 1930’s text raises concern of the male seeing
his wife as his property
6. SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES
Similarities –
- still remains degrading to women
Differences –
- not as many men asking the questions
- more focus on the woman’s looks rather than
her brain
Lexis – the use of contractions and slang style language used in the modern day problem page shows the more relaxed approach that is taken on both asking and solving the question. This could show that the problems raised today are not as serious as what they used to be.
Grammar – the modern day text uses more shorter sentences
Dicourse structure – problem solution
1930s text focuses on the brain of the woman whereas the modern day text is focused on the body of the woman showing the change in what is generally more important to the males partaking in the problem pages. However the problems raised in the texts both remain degrading to woman as they focus on ways they can change their partner. The 1930’s text also raises the concern of the male seeing his wife as his property and that he is the dominant one in the relationship ‘when I marries’ as opposed to ‘when we married’
This shows the change between the 1930’s focus being on the brain and intellectual things whereas the modern day speaks about the looks and the negative connotations with them. The most used word in the 1930’s text is literature whereas the modern day text most used word is weight.
It was found from the texts we looked at that all of the hypotheses we created at the start were all proved to be right. The changes that have take place throughout the times may be due to the rising concern of the way a woman presents herself as opposed to her personality and how intelligent she is. The change in language from informal to the use of slang may be due to the rise in the use of slang in society and how over time our language has developed.
Overall, I feel that problem pages were a good choice of texts regarding comparing both language changes and the difference in male attitudes. However, producing quantitative analysis was tricky as the text did not provide a clear set of results regarding most used words and showing a clear change in language. Qualitative data however provided data that was rich in detail and provided a strong view on the texts.
