How big a problem is food borne illness in this country? According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 1 in 6 people get sick and 3,000 die each year. This public health burden is largely preventable. Under The Food Safety Modernization Act, The Food and Drug Administration has a mandate to enforce preventive-based controls across the food supply chain.
The risk-based preventive controls the FDA will enact still should change the way big companies grow and alter food and food seeds.

GMO’s refer to a living organism whose genes have been altered by inserting gene(s) from an unrelated species. This is called “transgenic” technology and has been used in over 40 species of plants for food and fibers. In crops, it has been used to enhance resistance to insecticides, herbicides, or pesticides, drought tolerance, and encourage higher yields.
H.R. 875 will establish the food Safety Administration within the Department of Health and Human Services to protect the public health by preventing food-borne illness, and improving security of food from intentional contamination. The National Organic Program regulations prohibit the use of genetic engineering, ionizing radiation, and sewage sludge in organic production and handling.
