American Government Qtr1. Benchmark
1. Atomic Energy Act Enacted in 1946 79th Congress of the United States By: Daniel Carrasquillo
2. What was this act??? The Atomic Energy Act of 1946 is referring to governing and sustaining the production of nuclear energy and weapons This was enacted to harness the atomic energy for commercial use and to better the lives of citizens in the U.S. along with the underlying use of military power.
3. How it became… The senate passed the Atomic Energy Act by a voice vote, or verbally voting to the other members of the senate The House of Reps. Passed this Act of a total vote of 265 for to 79 against On August 1, 1946 President Harry Truman signed the bill Went into effect on January 1, 1947
4. Over the years… Percentages of Nuclear power plants skyrocketed and Nuclear Power was then harnessed for commercial and residential use These plants use controlled nuclear fusion to create atomic energy which can power much more than would coal or gas which was used at the time
5. Risks??? The only complications with these plants are the toxic wastes that are produced from the stacks and from the waste that is carried from the plant itself Also, meltdowns were a main concern and in 1986 a major nuclear meltdown in the city of Chernobyl occurred
6. The Act staying a bill??? If this Act never became a law, there would be several things that would change the course of history, one being that the U.S. would not have any regulations over how many bombs could be created and would have the streets look like North Korea.
7. Power would be generated in a different way rather than the usual nuclear power we now use today. More energy would be wasted to create more energy and we could possibly deplete our energy supply earlier on causing widespread panic in the country and even in the world
8. We would probably live in a less technological and less advanced society as a whole by the way nuclear power has pushed the U.S. economy forward by a whole lot, in a very quick way. We would also be overshadowed by other world powers as far as energy consumption and advancements in society as well.
9. World War III, a very surreal possibility with terrifying consequences would break out and with the misuse and mis-production of these bombs, it would possibly result in the end of mankind of these bombs were to get in the wrong hands during a massive World War, where everyone’s against each other.
10. In the end All in all in the end this bill that was passed regarding how we use and regulate the most powerful force known to mankind was a great thing in human history. This allowed us not to make to many and not to use it for military purposes and also later made more countries follow suit.
