A Pew Research study found that many consumers read online restaurant reviews and ratings, with 82% reading reviews and 40% checking reviews before every purchase. On average, users read 6 reviews before making a decision about a restaurant. Restaurant reviews make up 18% of all online reviews, totaling over 135 million. More than two-thirds of restaurant reviews rate the establishment four stars or higher. Social media platforms like Facebook use friends' reviews, photos and check-ins to determine what restaurant content to feature more prominently in a user's newsfeed. Location-based reviews and reviews from local guides are often shown first in search results. Businesses can solicit more reviews by encouraging customers to review through signage.
