3. Program Goal
Provide students participating in the study
abroad program, a training to prepare them for
their experience that will help them master
Alverno’s eight core abilities and help
incorporate the experience into their daily lives
Turn the Study Abroad into a credit-based
course
4. Alverno’s 8 Core Abilities:
How the Study Abroad Helps
Communication
Analysis
Problem Solving
Develop a global
perspective
Aesthetic
engagement
Social interaction
Effective
citizenship
Valuing
5. Learning Objective #1
By the end of INS 299, students will be able to
create a PowerPoint presentation that informs
others on the
geography, climate, religion, economics, politics,
and culture of their host country using at least
three different perspectives
6. Students Say:
We learned a lot about history, which was useful
and relevant, but I would have liked to learn
more about current culture and trends.
More information on culture shock for people
living in that country. When I traveled to
China, many of the Chinese people were shock
to see me because I am African American and I
was expected that type of reaction
7. Learning Objective #2
By the end of INS 299, students will be able to
identify at least three challenges they may face
while abroad and at least one way to overcome
the challenge
8. Students Say:
A challenging experience on the trip was
learning to adjust to living like the locals did and
realizing that they didn’t have all of the
amenities of home. I overcame this by
submerging myself into the culture and realize
what was important to the people.
I didn’t know anyone, and I really couldn’t speak
the language when I first go to Chile
9. Learning Objective #3
By the end of INS 299, students will have
created a strategy to promote cultural
understanding of America to their host
university and a cultural awareness of their host
country to Americans
10. Students say:
Global cultural awareness is an ability strengthened
by the study abroad that cannot be replicated in a
classroom. I use it often.
While studying abroad I had to learn to rephrase a
question when those of the home culture didn’t
understand. Communicating with those of other
cultures in my clinical practice.
Keeping an open mind to all positive
experiences/opportunities
11. Learning Objective #4
Students will have a clear understanding of what
is expected of them while they are abroad
related to the coursework of INS 299 and be
ready to bring their experience home and
complete INS 299A
12. Students say:
I fear I won't have many resources while abroad.
I know I can always contact people from Alverno
but going to a new school with a totally new
atmosphere could be overwhelming. If I don't
know how to navigate through the school and
who to talk to if I need help, I could possibly not
enjoy my duration abroad.
13. Conclusion
Update the syllabus for INS 299 to help prepare
students for their experience abroad while
incorporating Alverno’s 8 core abilities into the
coursework
Turn study abroad into a credit-based course in
order for more students to see the advantages
of participating
