2. Today, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) employ 7-in-10 workers in Singapore. Yet,
manpower challenges remains their top business concern as they make a bid to grow.
Themed “Overcoming Manpower Challenges with Productivity Initiatives”, this inaugural
Advancing U SME Symposium features multiple discussion platforms for business leaders
and entrepreneurs to explore innovative ways of making SME jobs easier, safer, smarter.
There will also be an advisory pop-up clinic where attendees get direct access to
productivity grants and programmes offered by NTUC and related agencies.
Through this Advancing U initiative, we hope to work with all Singapore companies to
make every SME workplace a better workplace, every SME job a better job, and every SME
worker a better worker.

Synopsis
Besides improving business “hardware” productivity to maximise profits, there is also the need to strengthen
the company’s “heartware” – career progression and happiness index of employees – for business
sustainability. How are businesses affected by our national policies and the new Budget measures? What are
the fundings and training programmes available for business owners to improve “hardware” and “heartware”?
This plenary session will feature holistic views and voices from business leaders, funding and training
administrators, HR practitioners and academic.

Synopsis
Family enterprises have the additional intricate challenge of
nurturing family relationships and planning for succession, which
can be detrimental if not handled carefully. The Economist
Intelligence Unit’s recent report also revealed that Singapore’s
family businesses lag behind its Southeast Asian counterparts in
succession planning despite its more advanced economy.
Predecessors and successors from Corlison Pearlie White and Food
Xervices will share their stories of how they have overcome all
odds as a family and achieved greater heights as a company.
