1. Meeting notes for Leave a Legacy Meeting : June 27/12
Bill was a good choice as MC for our May events
Legacy planning is a natural for funeral directors. They ask where do you want your
donations to go? Should pursue more of a relationship with them.
2 days before Liz called a lot of her Donors or prospects and they showed interest in the
event
After lunch perhaps a follow-up breakout session for those that want more information
One way of presenting to a prospective candidate for LAL….
o “Don’t know whether you would be interested- I’m involved in this networking
group, charity neutral- informative or educational….”
Survey feedback summary-
o List of organizations that people would give to should be followed up
o Why shouldn’t they be involved in LAL as they might have received prospective
$$ if they had been available at the event…
Should work as a follow-up to ask Charities to join us
55-Plus Magazine good tool for the future- reached prospective donors within the areas
we were looking
Go back to the partners- share feedback & possible video of event.
Should do another email blast with the positive results
Professional -Development – 1 day training might be a good thing to look at this fall to
help educate those involved with LAL or prospects
Empire Life may be a good resource
One question kept coming up… “How does Charities talk to Donors?”
Get back to the basics of charity giving
Gary MacDonald is developing a module within Youth for Christ across the country that
we should have him come and explain more. 180 board members have all made
bequests and our committed to promoting legacy planning. We may want to look at a
similar structure for LAL.
Brainstorm with planning group for future events
Plan a day to teach others
Find me one volunteer – can’t be an active financial advisor (conflict)
Train to answer the question why give? Ideally a couple would be good.
2 min testimonials are good- Liz finds her story is a real opener
Challenge others to give as well
Search hard to be able to find a way to donate to the charity- life insurance great option
St. Lawrence- contact- marketing- adding to website
Loyalist College is going to have a post-graduate donor program
2. Colleges are looking at Philanthropy as a career path along with fundraising
Charities need help- especially the smaller ones- Apprenticeships may be a good option
for LAL and and could be shared among charities. Week or two each….for a term and
give credit to the placement hours.
Both events – good idea- combined audience good but may need more details for some.
Call Partners and ask what role they want to take on for a period of time. (one year)
Do something slightly different for the event ….Ask Advisor & not for profit who they are
bringing? Or how many are coming?
Nametags good but should be choice to wear- some didn’t wear them
Under- represented by legal community- look for younger upstarts to join network-
great opportunities to build relationship
David Freedman- prof from Queens- sessions more defined
Answer the question how to Light a fire for all concerned
Breakout sessions following lunch 1 hour for more detailed information
o Tax (trusts)
o How Charities talk to Donors
Colleen – head office- real investment- good to start – where to go from here?
o Grant application
o Goal was 100 partners for the year- promotion
o How involved do we need her for this coming year and how much cost?
Partners interal- another lunch at Old Stones or someplace similar
o For existing and prospects for partnership – Fall?
Why should people donate to my Charity?
Empire- software- every division to be able to use?
Define what our network looks like with roles and tasks ( Dawn Harris to work on)
o Broad categories- 7-8 people
o Chair/president
o Chair for leave a legacy month/ events
o Treasurer
o Secretary
o Chair of partnerships
o Marketing/communication
Radio/TV/PSA
Print
Social Media
o Volunteers
o Education/programs/Seminars
o Speakers bureau for presentations.
