1. Lesson Title: Stuffed Salmon
Class KS2 Topic Salmon Anatomy Time Allocation 30 mins
Learning Intentions
Use a range of materials to create their
own fish model
Success Criteria
Pupils should use their imagination,
creativity and knowledge of salmon
anatomy to create their own model.
Key Vocabulary
Fins- pectoral, pelvic, anul, dorsal,
adipose & caudla (tail fin).
Scales, head, mouth , eyes, gills etc.
Introduction
Help pupils to remember the external anatomy of the salmon by displaying a blank
worksheet from lesson 1/salmon diagram and asking the pupils to name as many parts of
the salmon.
Demonstrate how to stuff and seal the fish templates, making a ‘stuffed fish’. Then
encourage the children to be as creative as possible with their scales, designs and colours.
Resources
Fish templates (if needed)
Stapler & staples/glue
Recycled paper/rubbish (stuffing)
Paints/markers/crayons
Googly eyes, glitter, sequence, glue
Development (Activity)
Pupils will now create their own, individualised fish. Encourage the pupils to remember to
add the key features of the salmon’s anatomy to their model.
Key Questions
What type of resource will you use to
decorate your fish? Are there any
patterns/special features visible?
Have you included parts of the anatomy?
Plenary
Pupils may be given the opportunity to showcase their finished product to the rest of the
class. They will be asked to describe where they have located the various anatomy parts
and also discuss their creativity and thinking behind their designs/colours etc.
Differentiation
Fish templates are provided if needed.
Pupils should be encouraged to create
their own fish template wherever
possible. (A4 size)
Extension
Time permitting the pupils may be able to make the salmon’s organs which they possibly
researched as an extension to lesson 1. If this has not taken place then this is also a good
time for the internal organs to be researched and small, replica models produced from
recycled paper and other resources.
Other Notes
To make the fish you must create or cut out
a template on 2 pieces of paper and then
staple these together, leaving the head
open so it can be stuffed. Then seal.
Create the designs/anatomy parts first and
then stuff and staple.
