Biography Of Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno And Max...
Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer were alltheorists of the Frankfurt School
and they were the first to introduce the idea of the "culture industry, the mass marketing of culture in
the modern era. However, Walter Benjamin gives a different perspective on the role of culture in
modern society, he believed that the possibility of mechanical reproduction (photography) was
demolishing the integrity of art in modern society . He gives the example of the Mona Lisa painting
by leonardo da vinci. The painting has a specific the existence and particular location but with
mechanical reproduction it can be copied multiple different times and occupy more than one place at
a time. The question posed by Benjamin is what are we missing ... Show more content on

For Benjamin, the mechanical production of art "democratizes cultural production" Thus It loses its
aura and authority as it becomes available to everyone. We can extend this to an analysis of media
today in which everyone can be an actor and everyone can be a producer; the difference between
high art and the popular culture are blurred. Therefore, from these two Frankfurt theorists we have a
different view of the culture and the culture industry. Benjamin focuses on the "democratization of
culture" that is made available by the production of art while Adorno and Horkheimer argue the
ways in which art become more linked to commercial exploitation. It can be suggested through the
readings of Adorno and Horkheimer 's work that they seem to be eliciting the question of whether
people believe everything that the culture tells them and trying to make sense of the distinct
differences between the messages of the culture industry and the public's realities thus creating an
environment where autonomous independent individuals, who are able to think for themselves, can
form. Both theorists seem to be exploring how cultural meaning is generated and believe that the
structures which promote and deliver these messages of cultural influence is powerful. It is safe to
say that we may be

Walter Mitlter's Character Analysis
Walter Mitty is an average, middle–aged man living a dull life, and is married to a bossy wife. He
does just about everything that Mrs. Mitty tells him to do, except see Dr. Renshaw; and because of
all this, Walter often daydreams about the more exciting lives that he could have possibly lived.
These daydreams become so elaborate that Walter is very easily distracted and does not
communicate with other people very well.
Walter's boring life leads him to become highly imaginative, though he grows more anti–social at
the same time. All of this does not help him create bonds with anyone or feel as needed as he wants
to be.
Walter's mundane life starts off with his wife telling him what he needs to do and go get. Mrs. Mitty
tells him to: slow down when he drives faster than forty kilometers per hour, to buy overshoes and
puppy biscuits, and asks why he's not wearing his driving gloves that she got for him (implying that
Walter should put them on). Knowing his wife would only be so long at the hair dresser and that she
wants him to get back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Walter starts off with a daydream about piloting an SN202 hydroplane for the Navy, through one of
the worst storms in twenty years of history. This shows that Walter wants to be essential to
something important. In another daydream, Walter is a world renowned surgeon getting praise from
another highly skilled doctor, Dr. Prichard–Mitford. Even Dr. Renshaw is there and asks Walter ot
perform a surgery after he temporarily fixes the anesthetizer with a piece of a fountain pen. The last
daydream that Walter has, he is a captain in the war against Germany, taking on a suicide mission to
pick up heavily needed ammo. All of this must certainly prove, if anything, that Walter has the urge
to be wanted and finds that in his daydreams. This then further distances himself from society and
those around him in the

Walter Mitty Quotes
Walter Mitty, in the story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber, can be considered to be
losing in the relationship. Walter Mitty's wife is constantly seen as being the dominant one in the
relationship, and Walter Mitty is forced to accommodate for her. In one instance, as Walter Mitty is
daydreaming while driving he begins to speed up, resulting in his wife exclaiming "'You know I
don't like to go more than forty. You were up to fifty–five'" (Thurber 1). Walter Mitty is forced to
adjust because of her wife's preferences, showing him as limited in the actions he takes as a cause of
the relationship. Walter Mitty also considers himself to be helpless when it comes to his wife's
choices. Towards the end of the story, as Walter Mitty

Walter Mitty: A Psychological Condition
Walter Mitty, is an interesting character, who happens to live a very mundane life, but posses an
imaginative brain. In the story, Walter Mitty spends most of his time daydreaming, as a strategy of
ignoring or escaping his day–to–day duties. Walter Mitty is suffering a psychological condition
known as Maladaptive daydreaming, and that he is not just a normal dreamer. Maladaptive
daydreaming is a psychological condition, that, according to Aaron Kandola, " Causes intense
daydreaming that distracts a person from their real life" (2). These are some reasons why. First of
all, throughout the story, Walter Mitty has exceedingly vivid dreams, which involve different
characters, and contains elements that greatly resemble that of a novel. This trait has been credited a
symptom of Maladaptive dreaming by many of those who wrote of the condition (1)(2)(4). One may
say that he is just a normal, but imaginative dreamer, but daydreaming in this way, in excess, is very
abnormal indeed. The daydreams which Walter Mitty goes through are also reasonably realistic,
such as fighting in a war, and curing a patient, which make it all the more strange (3). Walter Mitty
is not a normal dreamer. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that, every single time he zones out, it is due to the fact that he's either read an article, heard
someone saying something, passed by a building, or was driving a car, leads to the conclusion that
he is suffering a psychological condition. Many different reliable sites have credited this as a
symptom of maladaptive dreaming, such as Healthline, MedicalDaily, and MedicalNewsToday (1)
(2)(4) . One may consider the opinion that Walter Mitty might just be remembering past
experiences, but in fact, he is not, he is legitimately zoning out, and imagining different things.
Walter Mitty does not randomly daydream

Walter Ruttman
A secondary important figure in defining and examining the absolute film movement within
Germany during the 1920s is Walter Ruttman. Unlike Richter he began as a student of architecture
and graphic design, which shaped his identity as an experimental filmmaker and accounts for the
prominence of shapes and lines within his films. He began his career as filmmaker directly after his
release from a hospital in Berlin for treatment of Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder caused by his
experiences in WW1. His works are said to be the very first examples of completely abstract film,
meaning that they are composed solely of the arrangement of various forms (geometric and
arbitrary) with no outside reference to anything or to any particular meaning. His first ... Show more

In his first two Opus shorts he used the paint–on–glass technique employing oil paints in different
streaks, curves, blobs and lines of various colors. Unlike Richter's Rhythm 21, Opus I and II
incorporate different colored shapes as well as tints and tones over the lens of the camera which
have been said to evoke a certain mood within the rhythmic movements. What we see is basically a
dance of both these soft arbitrary forms moving around the frame as well as (towards the end of I
and moreso in II) other hard–edged triangular shapes that are not quite as organic. Moving through
his four films within the series we can see both a refinement of his technique in addition to new
approaches that seem to have been influenced by Constructivist perspectives. In Opus II he uses a
technique known as kinestasis, which uses movement of the camera to make still figures appear to
have motion. By Opus IV all color has been removed, shapes have lost their organic quality and are
only geometric (as they are in Richter's works) and there is much less evocation of feeling. Instead
he shows only the essential capacity of the camera as a device and uses only light, framing and time

Walter Mitty Reflection
In the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, for me, it shows a very unique storyline that a film
may have. Personally, I think that it was interesting to watch this movie when one is about to feel
down of himself. By watching this movie, I get inspiration and motivation to appreciate my life
more of whatever things that I had done before or everything that I may do in the future.
Why do I live on this Earth? Based on the motto of LIFE Magazine, I think that in every step that
we take, there are pros and cons that we may face. "To see the world, things dangerous to come to,
to see behind walls, draw close, to find each other, and to feel that is the purpose of life." – What I
think about this phrase is we need to be brave to try new things ... Show more content on

Walter Anderson Biography
Down in the deep south, a talented Mississippi artist Walter Inglis Anderson was born to George
Walter Anderson, a grain broker, and Annette McConnell, an artist, on September 29, 1903 in New
Orleans, Louisiana. Annette McConnell, a daughter of a distinguished New Orleans family, attended
the Newcomb School of Fine Arts in New Orleans where she studied the ideals of the American Arts
and Crafts movement. She was artistic with a passion for ceramics, painting, music, and literature
which strongly influenced her three sons (Walter, Peter, and Mac) to draw, paint, and write poetry.
Soon after Walter's birth, the Andersons moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi, where they created
their family business, Shearwater Pottery, which sold decorated pottery, carvings, and creative
widgets for tourists.
Throughout his youth, Anderson attended a military boarding school in Manlius, New York (1915–

Walter Mitty Negative Elements
In every movie we watch, we could not help from hoping that it fulfills our hero's quest, whether
there is a hero with special abilities, or a hero that will save people or situations by the end of the
story. The other movie that fulfills our hero quest is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty which was
released in 2013. Directed by Ben Stiller, this comedy–drama adventure movie, the main characters
are played by Ben Stiller as Walter Mitty, and Kristen Wiig as Cheryl Malhoff. The story is about
Walter Mitty, who goes on an adventure to learn about himself and returns newly empowered,
changes to a better person. Walter Mitty is a daydreamer Negative Assets Manager at LIFE
magazine company. Walter is diligent at work and takes a great care of the pictures for the
magazine. However, the magazine is undergoing transition process to be a digital magazine. For the

choice of the background song which is Space Oddity sung by David Bowie suits well with the
theme of the movie as it is also a song about being courage and going to unknown with harmonious
tone. Overall, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a good inspirational movie that is easy to

Walter Mitty Comparison
Has daydreaming even taken over your life? In "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" by James Thurber,
is about a man, Walter Mitty, who is kind of pathetic and many people laugh at him. Walter
daydreams a lot in order to escape reality. In The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Walter works at Life
Magazine and goes on an adventure to find the missing picture that is going to be used for the cover
of the next magazine. Walter starts off boring and pathetic, but begins to make his daydreams his
reality as his dreams become less of a fantasy. In the film, the setting takes place all over the world
including Iceland, Greenland, and Afghanistan. Although in the story, the setting takes place only in
Waterbury, Connecticut. They both have similarities and differences throughout the story. There are
many similarities in both versions. One similarity is that Walter stands up for himself at some point.
In the short story Walter states, "'Does it ever occur to you that I am sometimes thinking?'"(Thurber
5). This shows Walter standing up to his wife Mrs.Mitty. In the film, Walter stands up, this time to
his boss when he gets fired from his job. Walter is fired for losing the picture that was going to be
on the next magazine. Walter states that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A big difference between the film and short story is Walter's relationship. In the film, Walter has a
love interest and most of his daydreams are about the girl he likes, Cheryl. One of Walter's
daydreams includes a statue that he made for Cheryl of the two of them together. This shows how
Walter feels about Cheryl. Yet, in the short story, Walter already has a wife. James Thurber writes,
"...Mrs. Mitty...he looked at his wife..."(Thurber 1). This shows the difference in Walter's romance.
This affects the dreams Walter has during the story. The daydreams are different in each version,
which causes Walter's thoughts to also be different. This is important because it causes the stories to

Sir Walter Raleigh : Narrance And Influence In...
There was an English Poet, soldier & politician who studied at Oxford University whom name was
Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1552, the English Poet Sir Walter Raleigh was born in Hayes Barton, United
Kingdom. He was the youngest of all the sons Catherine Champernowne had in both of her
marriages. When Catherine met Raleigh's father, he was her second husband. Raleigh was raised
around Roman Catholicism, however, he hated it because he didn't like certain rules in there. When
Sir Walter Raleigh was 37 years old, he met a woman's name Elizabeth which he later married her in
1591, when her full name became Elizabeth Raleigh. Years later, Walter Raleigh & Elizabeth had
three children, (Carew Raleigh, Damerei Raleigh, and Walter Raleigh). Raleigh was also an explorer
of the "New World," he explored from Virginia to present day Florida. He named Virginia after the
virgin Queen Elizabeth. Raleigh lead an ill–fated group of expeditionist to Roanoke. During the
time period of 1579 and 1583 Sir Walter Raleigh had fought with Queen Elizabeth in wars back in
Ireland. Walter was a very competitive person and he was doing very well in those. Later upon his
arrival, he became the favorite to Elizabeth I's court. Since he did a fine job during his wars she
rewarded him with monopolies, travel privileges and having the right to colonize North America the
way he wanted to. A lot of people were surprised because Queen Elizabeth never gave this

An Analysis Of Walter Lippman's Quote
With regards to Walter Lippman's quote in 1922, it is fair to dispute that 'News is just someone's
version of events'. Due to the changing society over the past years since the quote and the increased
number of factors to consider, it raises the question of how precise, accurate and relevant this
quotation is in the present day. However, some factors must be considered when debating the
credibility of the quotation: 'news is just someone's version of events,' as it can be affected by a
number of reasons. These can include factually based stories, changing market conditions, partisan
and 'churnalism'; more specifically– 'flat earth' stories. Therefore, when considering these factors
affecting news stories, it is can be argued that news isn't 'someone's version of events', because the
article is either purely fact and leaves no room for opinion, or the version of events or news story
has been manipulated due to changing market conditions or 'churnalism'. However, when a news
story is initially sought, it is also believed that a reporter should find a story and that the news story
is true and a chronological order of the events in which the reporter witnessed at the time,
furthermore supporting the quotation. On top of this, when biased media organisations include their
opinion or political stance, this can also be argued that it is 'their 'version of events.' In the first
instance, the quote can still be regarded as accurate and true when taking The Editors' Code into

Barbara Walters
Barbara Walters was born on the 25 September 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts. Walters was born
Jewish, though her parents did not practice it. She has interviewed every president since Nixon and
even interviewed some of America's most infamous murderers. She originally wanted to be an
actress, however, became a journalist by accident when the Today show was moved to news instead
of entertainment and her boss insisted she should write for all the ansegments of the show. Today,
she is known as one of the many television journalists whose careers include almost the entire
history of television news.

Her co–anchor Henry Reasoner very obviously patronized her on air. Many critics were skeptical
about Walters' journalist abilities and believed ABC News' hiring of her was just a publicity stunt to
feed off of her fame. Gilda
Radner's parody of her on Saturday Night Live hurt her credibility even more. Within two years,
ABC's ratings turned disastrous and they had to let Walters go.
Barbara then went on to being a part–time correspondent for the ABC news show, 20/20 where she
was able to get an exclusive interview with former President Richard Nixon in 1980.
This had been his first television appearance since his resignation six years prior. Her and her
former Today show partner co–hosted 20/20 in 1984. Her twelve–million–dollar salary was
recorded as the highest paid salary of any news host in history.
At 73 years old, Barbara Walters stepped down as 20/20 co–host. She has brought a new meaning to
the art of "personality journalism" and "being the first" interviews. She is sometimes looked down
on by people for displaying personal emotions because they believe it is only to pump ratings.
However, Walters' wide range of interviews presents a deep chronicle of

Religion And Religion In Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe
Culture in of itself, is intrinsically complex. This is partly due to the multitude of factors that not
only influence culture itself, but our perspective of culture as well. Different cultures contain
different elements that either stick or change over time. These elements can include festivals,
historical holidays, and even the way we interact with families, friends, and strangers. One
unsurprising key that has the ability to intertwine with culture is religion. Religion, in general, has
the incredible ability to convict, control, and even free those who are under the reigns of sin to those
who ponder the philosophical theories and tenets of our existence. Religion becomes an important
part of an individual's life and, over time, can begin this same process in culture. One powerful
example we can look at to demonstrate this is in Sir Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe." Set in Medieval
England, this book demonstrates the height of the Roman Catholic Church and the culture that
revolved around it's control. The Roman Catholic Church's totality of temporal and spiritual control
had an astounding effect which Sir Walter Scott clearly demonstrates throughout his novel that
shines light on the dark underbelly of the Church from it's racism toward adherents of Judaism to
the greed and hypocrisy of the monks and abbots who vowed to give themselves up to God. Sir
Walter Scott was not one to sugarcoat history even when revolved around a religious institution and
is valiant to defending and

Sir Walter Raleigh the Poet and Gentleman Essay
Sir Walter Raleigh the Poet and Gentleman
Looking for tall, dark, and handsome? Sir Walter Raleigh was all of those things and so much more.
As one of the most intriguing men of the Middle Ages, Sir Walter Raleigh's strong religious stances,
political roles, outstanding writings, and genuine charm make him "Bachelor of the 16th Century".
That is until he married in 1572. Sir Walter Raleigh was born in 1552, but not to the common name
that is now in print. During his lifetime, his name was spelled five different ways: Raleigh,
Rawleigh, Ralegh, Rawley, and lastly Rawlee. It was not until the early 19th century that his name
took hold of the Raleigh spelling. He was a very tall man, just over six feet tall. Keep in mind

It was here that his trouble began. The Queen's Maid of Honor, Bessie, and Sir Walter Raleigh fell in
love. In 1572, they were married. The Queen was greatly displeased by this, and threw him in the
Tower of London to be punished. Fortunately, Sir Walter Raleigh also had a great deal of business
sense. In 1575, he was released from the Tower of London because one of his ships captured the
Spanish "Madre de Dios". This ship gained a great deal of treasure for the Queen. In 1584, Sir
Walter Raleigh organized colonizing expeditions to America. These expeditions ended tragically as
"The Lost Colony of Roanoke". Contrary to popular belief, Raleigh was such a favorite of the
Queen that she refused to permit him to go off on expeditions. Thus it was the ships he provided and
the men he instructed who actually went to the New World and brought back a great number of
discoveries. In 1603, Queen Elizabeth died, and so did the success of Sir Walter Raliegh. James I
took the throne. Sir Walter Raliegh and the new king did not get along. Raleigh was framed for a
plot against the throne. James I forced him to life imprisonment. The money hungry king released
him three years later, so that he could organize an expedition against the Spanish. At the end of this
moderately successful expedition, James I had Sir Walter Raleigh rearrested on the previous charges
of treason. He

Personal Freedom In The Indispensable Opposition By Walter...
Walter Lippman writes on his beliefs on the subject of personal freedom in the article "The
Indispensable Opposition". The author draws from his personal knowledge and observations of
natural human interactions in order, to support the basis of his argument. He utilizes repetition of the
word freedom, an abrasive tone, and day to day natural occurrences in order to stimulate the reader
into thinking about freedom overall and how it effects themselves as a common human being.
Lippmann also uses Voltaire's enlightenment ideas to provide a rebuttal to Lippmann's ideas which
he successfully argues in order to make his opinions seem more correct. All of these strategies help
to convince the reader that freedom is taken for granted and selfishly abused when another being
displays an opinion that we don't agree with.
A useful tactic that Lippman uses throughout his article is repetition. The word that he mostly
repeats is the word "freedom". He constantly reminds the audience that there is "freedom of speech,
freedom of opinion, freedom of discussion" "because freedom of discussion improves our own
opinions". He utilizes this specific strategy in order to create a prominent image of freedom within
the reader and draw out the reader's personal feelings on freedom and overarchingly connect the
audience back to the central idea of the article. Lippman establishes his argument immediately,
which makes it seem simple and direct to the reader even though it is actually quite

abnormally average and lackluster, but his daydreams transform the world around him into exciting

Throughout the story he does not seem to enjoy interacting with the other people of the town,
especially his own wife. For example, near the end of the story his wife says she will be gone a
minute, an obvious figure of speech, and Mitty chastises her for being more than a minute. His wife
is the only person in the story that he has the courage to talk back to, and when he does it is still in
very weak and unsure ways quite unlike the cock–sure persona of his characters. When he interacts
with the attendant he is quite nonconfrontational and almost avoids conflict, not saying more than
muttering "Gee," Or "Oh." However, once he walks away the story says, "They're so damn cock,
thought Walter Mitty, walking along Main Street; they think they know everything." He then
describes a time that he tried to take his chains off and managed to get them wound up around the
axles, and a grinning garageman had to help him. To any other person this would probably seem like
a kind act, something to be thankful for. Not Mitty. He thinks about wearing his arm in a sling the
next time so that in order to make them think he didn't cause the blunder himself, thinking that that
will take the grin off the garageman's face. He interprets the grin as being of condescension. Instead

Exploring The Soul In Sir Walter Raleigh's The Lie
In Sir Walter Raleigh's "The Lie", the speaker tells the soul "to go upon a thankless errand" and go
accuse the world of lying. The speaker states that the soul has the truth as its warrant, which gives
the soul no reason to fear telling authorities or those with power. The second stanza starts with the
speaker telling the soul to accuse the church and the court of their wrongdoings. In the third stanza,
he tells the soul what to say about the potentates, and the speaker says their greedy people only
doing favors for money. The fourth and fifth stanzas describe men of high status as greedy only
interested in advancing their own agenda. The next three stanzas have the speaker telling the soul
about human qualities, such as love, age, beauty, wisdom, and wit, of their wrongdoings. The next
four stanzas are similar, and the speaker tells the soul to accuse charity, law, nature, justice, schools
and more about how they do nothing good for society. Then, after the speaker list all the people and
virtues that need to improve, he tells the soul that it may face opposition but should not worry since
"no stab thy soul can kill" (Raleigh 78). The theme of this poem is that people can and should not be
afraid to change the way the corrupt social norms.
The poem starts with the speaker saying that the errand that the soul is about to embark on will

Walter Mitty Comparison
"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" Essay There is a man who daydreams about anything and
everything. A man who lives in his dreams, and rarely spends time in reality. This man is named
Walter Mitty. The movie directed by Ben Stiller and the short story by James Thuber both tell the
stories of Walter Mitty and his outlandish daydreams. Although the movie is supposed to be based
on the short story, there are many significant differences. These differences include how Walter's
personalities are not the same in the movie and short story, and also how their endings share no
resemblance to each other. In the movie, Walter has a courageous personality and constantly strives
to live his life to the fullest. The Walter from the short story cannot ... Show more content on

At the end of the story, on page 7, Walter is waiting for his wife to finish shopping at the drugstore,
he imagines being executed. "...he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud and
disdainful,...." This could be understood to mean that Walter is not happy with his relationship with
Mrs. Mitty or his life. She does not make him happy, and he will continue to be unhappy because he
is too timid to do anything about it. Mrs. Mitty makes things worse for Walter because she believes
his daydreams are an illness. On page 7 she states to Walter, "I'm going to take your temperature
when we get home." This shows that Mrs. Mitty considers Walter to be unwell, and considers him
senseless. Her words prove to the reader that the life of Walter Mitty will continue to be miserable.
Walter at the end of the short story faces a firing squad, whereas the Walter from the movie does not
share the same fate. At the end of the movie Walter finally gets a date with Cheryl. Cheryl is the
woman he has longed to be with. He has been trying to ask her out since the beginning of the movie,
but never finds the right words. This opens up many possibilities for him and will certainly make
him happier. By the end of the movie, Walter has had many extraordinary adventures and has
traveled to many different places. He has learned that if you take risks, good things may happen.
Walter knows that if you only fantasize about your dreams and not act on them, you will never know

The use of symbolism within the short story helps to further convey the character of Walter Mitty.
Fast cars are universally a symbol of manhood however, in Walter Mitty's life, his lack of
masculinity is often associated with his car. Mrs. Mitty does not allow her husband to drive "so fast!
[Walter] you're driving too fast!" (2). This is a way that she is imposing control over and
emasculating him. She is able to find a way to shut down any chance of Walter trying to prove his

Critique Analysis Of Sir Walter Scott
Critique evaluation
Sir Walter Scott was a very successful writer during the beginning of the 19th century. Born and
raised in Scotland, many say that Sir Walter Scott had a very significant impact on the culture of
Scotland. From writing about daring knights to making kilts fashionable attire, Scott was a cultural
icon at the time. But how much influence did Scott truly have on the cultural influence of Scotland?
Scott was the most culturally significant author, for Scotland, in the 19th century.
The early life of Sir Walter Scott was riddled with tragedy and struggle. The Scotts resided in the
Old District of Edinburgh. Out of the twelve children in the Scott family, only five survived their
early youth. The hardest part of Walter Scott's childhood was when he was struck with polio which
crippled his right leg. These terrible events may have been brought about by the poor conditions in
the city. To protect their crippled son, the Scotts sent Walter away to live with his paternal
grandfather in the countryside. During his time in the countryside Sir Walter Scott reveled in ancient
Scottish folklore told by his grandfather. He took great interest in Scottish history and culture.
"Here, in the country air, he became a sturdy boy, and his mind was stored with the old Broder tales
and songs" (Lockhart). After leaving the countryside as a young adult, Scott undertook many trips
around Scotland to hear the folklore shared by the people. These old tales of Scottish history

The secret life of Walter Mitty written in 1939 by James Thuber and the film adaption the secret life
of Walter Mitty directed by Norman Mclean, is a story that both center on a man ''Walter Mitty,'' a
man who constantly daydreams to escape the harsh reality he lives in. While both the movie and
short story focus on Walter himself, they both portray different aspects of the conflict, setting, and
the characters in general. One similarity between the conflict both in the short story and the film, is
that they portray Walter as a shy and unconfident man. Even though Walter is different in the story
and the movie, confidence is what appears to be Walter's weakness. However, with the conflict in
the short story, Walter and his wife Mrs. Mitty clearly have issues that cannot be resolved. Mrs.

The Lie By Sir Walter Raleigh
The poem "The Lie" was written by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1592. Thought out the poem, Sir Walter
Raleigh is expressing his feelings about Parliament and Queen Elisabeth, and how they always lie.
During this time Sir Walter begin to personally believe that the repeated, and distribution of the lie
made the people like a bunch of Pinocchio. However, after many years of Sir Walter Raleigh
helping to spread the lie he no longer wanted any part of it. He instead began to warn the readers
using his poetry about the inner workings of the government through each stanza. In the first stanza,
the speaker uses his soul to express his desire for the reader to know the truth. The next three
stanzas are the speaker showing about what and how Parliament lies. After that, the following eight
stanzas are an exaggeration of the lie explaining that things like love, time, and wisdom are no
longer. That because of the lie, they get turned into things like lust, motion, and Entanglements. In
the final stanza, the speaker appeals to the reader to not commit the lie, and instead let their soul
guide them because the speaker and Parliament did not. This poem's theme is warning about how
absolute power corrupts people, but faith and God cannot be corrupted. Government and corruption
are as old as dust. This poem shows no matter the type of government, whether it is a monarchy,
democracy, or aristocracy, there is always corruption within its system and no matter how much
somebody wants to do

The Prophetic Imagination, By Walter Brueggemann
A popular idea about Jesus throughout our society today, is that 'he was an admirable man who
made unbelievable sacrifices for the betterment of the world, but his actions would be unrealistic
today'. Why would Jesus' actions be unrealistic today many might ask, and the answer would be
people think that the time has changed, and the world is so different now that it would be impossible
to make the same decisions Jesus did. But is it any different? Just because situations may be
different, that does not mean that the results should be. Jesus acted out of love and compassion,
which shouldn't cause for change even over 2000 years. Walter Brueggemann in his book The
Prophetic Imagination, talks about a "new history" that Jesus inaugurates for all people, but
especially for the ones who were marginalized (Brueggemann, 113). CJ Furness writes about how
Jesus does offer a practical argument of nonviolence even in today's world and today's
circumstances in John Yoder's book What Would You Do? (Yoder, 55) Both of these claims by
Brueggemann and Furness have practical relevance to Jesus' recommendations, and prove that they
should still be relevant today. In The Prophetic Imagination, Brueggemann talks about the time of
Jesus and what Jesus did for certain marginalized groups of his time. In those talks he discusses the
nature of Jesus' resurrection. On page 113 Brueggemann notes that the resurrection should not be
remembered as a spiritual development of the church, nor an oddity

The Hero Of Walter Payton : A Good Hero
A good hero is someone who is courageous, kind, tough, patient, and helpful. Walter Payton fills all
of the requirements to be a good hero, mainly by being tough and kind. Walter Payton was a running
back for the NFL's Chicago Bears. Throughout his career, he broke as many records as any back
ever. Many people say he is the most well–rounded back in NFL history. Walter was also one of the
greatest philanthropists the NFL has ever seen. He started the Walter Payton Foundation, which
helps underprivileged children. In 1999, Walter found out that he had primary sclerosing
cholangitis. He found time to raise money for this rare disease. Sadly, Walter Payton died later that
year, but his legacy was carried on. Walter Payton deserves to be recognized due to his football
career and charitable acts as evidenced by his acts of kindness and toughness.
Walter Payton's kindness deserves some appreciation. In the article titled "Walter Payton Charity
Work", the author Don Yaeger states, "Gifts on Christmas for abused and neglected children may
not seem like a lot, but in terms of establishing self–worth, confidence, and a feeling of pride, I
believe it may mean everything." (Walter Payton Charity Work). Every year, Walter Payton dressed

Whimsically and beautifully produced and acted, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, directed and

Everyone that knows Mitty is aware of when he "zones out" – in some situations, he pictures

At the film's start, Mitty's daydreams were extreme and obviously a fantasy, as they explored
entirely different movie genres, such as a Latin romance or a Michael Bay action film. These
daydreams are almost comedy like, for they are simply unrealistic for a man like Mitty. However,
after Mitty's epic adventure begins, these daydreams begin to make sense and they are no longer
silly fantasies. This man's realities keep you on the edge of your seat, for he makes choices that not
every person would. As a viewer, that is something admirable to take from this inspirational film.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is an amazing movie. The plot evenly spreads hints of comedy, as
well as heartwarming moments that stick with you. The soundtrack is incredible, for just listening to
the songs on their own evoke urges to travel. Each and every role is played the way they should –
Scott seemingly fits with his snarky comments, Wiig is adorable as the love interest and Stiller
portrays the perfect boring man turned adrenaline junkie. As the star of comedies, such as Zoolander
and Meet The Fockers, Stiller portrays his famous comedic character in this film, mixed with
heartwarming tendencies. Walter Mitty is one of us – an average person, just living in the cycle of

Biography Of Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno And Max...

  • 1. Biography Of Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno And Max... Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer were alltheorists of the Frankfurt School and they were the first to introduce the idea of the "culture industry, the mass marketing of culture in the modern era. However, Walter Benjamin gives a different perspective on the role of culture in modern society, he believed that the possibility of mechanical reproduction (photography) was demolishing the integrity of art in modern society . He gives the example of the Mona Lisa painting by leonardo da vinci. The painting has a specific the existence and particular location but with mechanical reproduction it can be copied multiple different times and occupy more than one place at a time. The question posed by Benjamin is what are we missing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For Benjamin, the mechanical production of art "democratizes cultural production" Thus It loses its aura and authority as it becomes available to everyone. We can extend this to an analysis of media today in which everyone can be an actor and everyone can be a producer; the difference between high art and the popular culture are blurred. Therefore, from these two Frankfurt theorists we have a different view of the culture and the culture industry. Benjamin focuses on the "democratization of culture" that is made available by the production of art while Adorno and Horkheimer argue the ways in which art become more linked to commercial exploitation. It can be suggested through the readings of Adorno and Horkheimer 's work that they seem to be eliciting the question of whether people believe everything that the culture tells them and trying to make sense of the distinct differences between the messages of the culture industry and the public's realities thus creating an environment where autonomous independent individuals, who are able to think for themselves, can form. Both theorists seem to be exploring how cultural meaning is generated and believe that the structures which promote and deliver these messages of cultural influence is powerful. • 2. Walter Mitlter's Character Analysis Walter Mitty is an average, middle–aged man living a dull life, and is married to a bossy wife. He does just about everything that Mrs. Mitty tells him to do, except see Dr. Renshaw; and because of all this, Walter often daydreams about the more exciting lives that he could have possibly lived. These daydreams become so elaborate that Walter is very easily distracted and does not communicate with other people very well. Walter's boring life leads him to become highly imaginative, though he grows more anti–social at the same time. All of this does not help him create bonds with anyone or feel as needed as he wants to be. Walter's mundane life starts off with his wife telling him what he needs to do and go get. Mrs. Mitty tells him to: slow down when he drives faster than forty kilometers per hour, to buy overshoes and puppy biscuits, and asks why he's not wearing his driving gloves that she got for him (implying that Walter should put them on). Knowing his wife would only be so long at the hair dresser and that she wants him to get back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Walter starts off with a daydream about piloting an SN202 hydroplane for the Navy, through one of the worst storms in twenty years of history. This shows that Walter wants to be essential to something important. In another daydream, Walter is a world renowned surgeon getting praise from another highly skilled doctor, Dr. Prichard–Mitford. Even Dr. Renshaw is there and asks Walter ot perform a surgery after he temporarily fixes the anesthetizer with a piece of a fountain pen. The last daydream that Walter has, he is a captain in the war against Germany, taking on a suicide mission to pick up heavily needed ammo. All of this must certainly prove, if anything, that Walter has the urge to be wanted and finds that in his daydreams. This then further distances himself from society and those around him in the ... • 3. Walter Mitty Quotes Walter Mitty, in the story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber, can be considered to be losing in the relationship. Walter Mitty's wife is constantly seen as being the dominant one in the relationship, and Walter Mitty is forced to accommodate for her. In one instance, as Walter Mitty is daydreaming while driving he begins to speed up, resulting in his wife exclaiming "'You know I don't like to go more than forty. You were up to fifty–five'" (Thurber 1). Walter Mitty is forced to adjust because of her wife's preferences, showing him as limited in the actions he takes as a cause of the relationship. Walter Mitty also considers himself to be helpless when it comes to his wife's choices. Towards the end of the story, as Walter Mitty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Walter Mitty: A Psychological Condition Walter Mitty, is an interesting character, who happens to live a very mundane life, but posses an imaginative brain. In the story, Walter Mitty spends most of his time daydreaming, as a strategy of ignoring or escaping his day–to–day duties. Walter Mitty is suffering a psychological condition known as Maladaptive daydreaming, and that he is not just a normal dreamer. Maladaptive daydreaming is a psychological condition, that, according to Aaron Kandola, " Causes intense daydreaming that distracts a person from their real life" (2). These are some reasons why. First of all, throughout the story, Walter Mitty has exceedingly vivid dreams, which involve different characters, and contains elements that greatly resemble that of a novel. This trait has been credited a symptom of Maladaptive dreaming by many of those who wrote of the condition (1)(2)(4). One may say that he is just a normal, but imaginative dreamer, but daydreaming in this way, in excess, is very abnormal indeed. The daydreams which Walter Mitty goes through are also reasonably realistic, such as fighting in a war, and curing a patient, which make it all the more strange (3). Walter Mitty is not a normal dreamer. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that, every single time he zones out, it is due to the fact that he's either read an article, heard someone saying something, passed by a building, or was driving a car, leads to the conclusion that he is suffering a psychological condition. Many different reliable sites have credited this as a symptom of maladaptive dreaming, such as Healthline, MedicalDaily, and MedicalNewsToday (1) (2)(4) . One may consider the opinion that Walter Mitty might just be remembering past experiences, but in fact, he is not, he is legitimately zoning out, and imagining different things. • 5. Walter Ruttman A secondary important figure in defining and examining the absolute film movement within Germany during the 1920s is Walter Ruttman. Unlike Richter he began as a student of architecture and graphic design, which shaped his identity as an experimental filmmaker and accounts for the prominence of shapes and lines within his films. He began his career as filmmaker directly after his release from a hospital in Berlin for treatment of Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder caused by his experiences in WW1. His works are said to be the very first examples of completely abstract film, meaning that they are composed solely of the arrangement of various forms (geometric and arbitrary) with no outside reference to anything or to any particular meaning. His first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his first two Opus shorts he used the paint–on–glass technique employing oil paints in different streaks, curves, blobs and lines of various colors. Unlike Richter's Rhythm 21, Opus I and II incorporate different colored shapes as well as tints and tones over the lens of the camera which have been said to evoke a certain mood within the rhythmic movements. What we see is basically a dance of both these soft arbitrary forms moving around the frame as well as (towards the end of I and moreso in II) other hard–edged triangular shapes that are not quite as organic. Moving through his four films within the series we can see both a refinement of his technique in addition to new approaches that seem to have been influenced by Constructivist perspectives. In Opus II he uses a technique known as kinestasis, which uses movement of the camera to make still figures appear to have motion. By Opus IV all color has been removed, shapes have lost their organic quality and are only geometric (as they are in Richter's works) and there is much less evocation of feeling. Instead he shows only the essential capacity of the camera as a device and uses only light, framing and time as his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Walter Mitty Reflection In the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, for me, it shows a very unique storyline that a film may have. Personally, I think that it was interesting to watch this movie when one is about to feel down of himself. By watching this movie, I get inspiration and motivation to appreciate my life more of whatever things that I had done before or everything that I may do in the future. Why do I live on this Earth? Based on the motto of LIFE Magazine, I think that in every step that we take, there are pros and cons that we may face. • 7. Walter Anderson Biography Down in the deep south, a talented Mississippi artist Walter Inglis Anderson was born to George Walter Anderson, a grain broker, and Annette McConnell, an artist, on September 29, 1903 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Annette McConnell, a daughter of a distinguished New Orleans family, attended the Newcomb School of Fine Arts in New Orleans where she studied the ideals of the American Arts and Crafts movement. She was artistic with a passion for ceramics, painting, music, and literature which strongly influenced her three sons (Walter, Peter, and Mac) to draw, paint, and write poetry. Soon after Walter's birth, the Andersons moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi, where they created their family business, Shearwater Pottery, which sold decorated pottery, carvings, and creative widgets for tourists. Walter Mitty Negative Elements In every movie we watch, we could not help from hoping that it fulfills our hero's quest, whether there is a hero with special abilities, or a hero that will save people or situations by the end of the story. The other movie that fulfills our hero quest is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty which was released in 2013. Directed by Ben Stiller, this comedy–drama adventure movie, the main characters are played by Ben Stiller as Walter Mitty, and Kristen Wiig as Cheryl Malhoff. • 9. Walter Mitty Comparison Has daydreaming even taken over your life? In "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" by James Thurber, is about a man, Walter Mitty, who is kind of pathetic and many people laugh at him. Walter daydreams a lot in order to escape reality. In The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Walter works at Life Magazine and goes on an adventure to find the missing picture that is going to be used for the cover of the next magazine. Walter starts off boring and pathetic, but begins to make his daydreams his reality as his dreams become less of a fantasy. In the film, the setting takes place all over the world including Iceland, Greenland, and Afghanistan. Although in the story, the setting takes place only in Waterbury, Connecticut. They both have similarities and differences throughout the story. There are many similarities in both versions. One similarity is that Walter stands up for himself at some point. In the short story Walter states, "'Does it ever occur to you that I am sometimes thinking?'"(Thurber 5). This shows Walter standing up to his wife Mrs.Mitty. In the film, Walter stands up, this time to his boss when he gets fired from his job. Walter is fired for losing the picture that was going to be on the next magazine. Walter states that he ... This shows how Walter feels about Cheryl. Yet, in the short story, Walter already has a wife. James Thurber writes, "...Mrs. Mitty...he looked at his wife..."(Thurber 1). • 10. Sir Walter Raleigh : Narrance And Influence In... There was an English Poet, soldier & politician who studied at Oxford University whom name was Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1552, the English Poet Sir Walter Raleigh was born in Hayes Barton, United Kingdom. He was the youngest of all the sons Catherine Champernowne had in both of her marriages. When Catherine met Raleigh's father, he was her second husband. Raleigh was raised around Roman Catholicism, however, he hated it because he didn't like certain rules in there. When Sir Walter Raleigh was 37 years old, he met a woman's name Elizabeth which he later married her in 1591, when her full name became Elizabeth Raleigh. Years later, Walter Raleigh & Elizabeth had three children, (Carew Raleigh, Damerei Raleigh, and Walter Raleigh). • 11. An Analysis Of Walter Lippman's Quote With regards to Walter Lippman's quote in 1922, it is fair to dispute that 'News is just someone's version of events'. Due to the changing society over the past years since the quote and the increased number of factors to consider, it raises the question of how precise, accurate and relevant this quotation is in the present day. However, some factors must be considered when debating the credibility of the quotation: 'news is just someone's version of events,' as it can be affected by a number of reasons. These can include factually based stories, changing market conditions, partisan and 'churnalism'; more specifically– 'flat earth' stories. Therefore, when considering these factors affecting news stories, it is can be argued that news isn't 'someone's version of events', because the article is either purely fact and leaves no room for opinion, or the version of events or news story has been manipulated due to changing market conditions or 'churnalism'. However, when a news story is initially sought, it is also believed that a reporter should find a story and that the news story is true and a chronological order of the events in which the reporter witnessed at the time, furthermore supporting the quotation. On top of this, when biased media organisations include their opinion or political stance, this can also be argued that it is 'their 'version of events.' • 13. Religion And Religion In Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe Culture in of itself, is intrinsically complex. This is partly due to the multitude of factors that not only influence culture itself, but our perspective of culture as well. Different cultures contain different elements that either stick or change over time. These elements can include festivals, historical holidays, and even the way we interact with families, friends, and strangers. One unsurprising key that has the ability to intertwine with culture is religion. Religion, in general, has the incredible ability to convict, control, and even free those who are under the reigns of sin to those who ponder the philosophical theories and tenets of our existence. Religion becomes an important part of an individual's life and, over time, can begin this same process in culture. One powerful example we can look at to demonstrate this is in Sir Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe." Set in Medieval England, this book demonstrates the height of the Roman Catholic Church and the culture that revolved around it's control. The Roman Catholic Church's totality of temporal and spiritual control had an astounding effect which Sir Walter Scott clearly demonstrates throughout his novel that shines light on the dark underbelly of the Church from it's racism toward adherents of Judaism to the greed and hypocrisy of the monks and abbots who vowed to give themselves up to God. Sir Walter Scott was not one to sugarcoat history even when revolved around a religious institution and is valiant to defending and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1575, he was released from the Tower of London because one of his ships captured the Spanish "Madre de Dios". This ship gained a great deal of treasure for the Queen. In 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh organized colonizing expeditions to America. These expeditions ended tragically as "The Lost Colony of Roanoke". Contrary to popular belief, Raleigh was such a favorite of the Queen that she refused to permit him to go off on expeditions. Thus it was the ships he provided and the men he instructed who actually went to the New World and brought back a great number of discoveries. • 18. Personal Freedom In The Indispensable Opposition By Walter... Walter Lippman writes on his beliefs on the subject of personal freedom in the article "The Indispensable Opposition". The author draws from his personal knowledge and observations of natural human interactions in order, to support the basis of his argument. He utilizes repetition of the word freedom, an abrasive tone, and day to day natural occurrences in order to stimulate the reader into thinking about freedom overall and how it effects themselves as a common human being. Lippmann also uses Voltaire's enlightenment ideas to provide a rebuttal to Lippmann's ideas which he successfully argues in order to make his opinions seem more correct. All of these strategies help to convince the reader that freedom is taken for granted and selfishly abused when another being displays an opinion that we don't agree with. A useful tactic that Lippman uses throughout his article is repetition. The word that he mostly repeats is the word "freedom". He constantly reminds the audience that there is "freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, freedom of discussion" "because freedom of discussion improves our own opinions". He utilizes this specific strategy in order to create a prominent image of freedom within the reader and draw out the reader's personal feelings on freedom and overarchingly connect the audience back to the central idea of the article. His wife is the only person in the story that he has the courage to talk back to, and when he does it is still in very weak and unsure ways quite unlike the cock–sure persona of his characters. When he interacts with the attendant he is quite nonconfrontational and almost avoids conflict, not saying more than muttering "Gee," Or "Oh." The speaker states that the soul has the truth as its warrant, which gives the soul no reason to fear telling authorities or those with power. The second stanza starts with the speaker telling the soul to accuse the church and the court of their wrongdoings. In the third stanza, he tells the soul what to say about the potentates, and the speaker says their greedy people only doing favors for money. Scott was the most culturally significant author, for Scotland, in the 19th century. The early life of Sir Walter Scott was riddled with tragedy and struggle. The Scotts resided in the Old District of Edinburgh. Out of the twelve children in the Scott family, only five survived their early youth. He formed the Devon militia and was a member of Elizabeth's War Council but did not take part in the naval battle. As he returned to court, he made an enemy with Queen Elizabeth's new favorite, Robert Devereux. Raleigh then left for Ireland, where he there cultivated his estates and developed the friendship with poet Edmund Spenser, who he later introduced to Queen Elizabeth in the year of 1590. • 36. The Prophetic Imagination, By Walter Brueggemann A popular idea about Jesus throughout our society today, is that 'he was an admirable man who made unbelievable sacrifices for the betterment of the world, but his actions would be unrealistic today'. Why would Jesus' actions be unrealistic today many might ask, and the answer would be people think that the time has changed, and the world is so different now that it would be impossible to make the same decisions Jesus did. But is it any different? Just because situations may be different, that does not mean that the results should be. Jesus acted out of love and compassion, which shouldn't cause for change even over 2000 years. Walter Brueggemann in his book The Prophetic Imagination, talks about a "new history" that Jesus inaugurates for all people, but especially for the ones who were marginalized (Brueggemann, 113). CJ Furness writes about how Jesus does offer a practical argument of nonviolence even in today's world and today's circumstances in John Yoder's book What Would You Do? (Yoder, 55) Both of these claims by Brueggemann and Furness have practical relevance to Jesus' recommendations, and prove that they should still be relevant today. In The Prophetic Imagination, Brueggemann talks about the time of Jesus and what Jesus did for certain marginalized groups of his time. In those talks he discusses the nature of Jesus' resurrection. On page 113 Brueggemann notes that the resurrection should not be remembered as a spiritual development of the church, nor an oddity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. • 39. Walter Mitty Daydreams Whimsically and beautifully produced and acted, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, directed and starring Ben Stiller, is the perfect movie to relate to our own lives. Like countless people on this planet, Walter Mitty (Stiller) works his 9 to 5 every single day in his life, stuck in an endless cycle. Everyone that knows Mitty is aware of when he "zones out" – in some situations, he pictures himself making a wild choice, since he was never brave enough to make those illusions a reality. As the negative assets manager in the photography department, Mitty works at LIFE magazine and has a crush on his co–worker, Cheryl (Kristen Wiig). The magazine is beginning to fall apart, as corporate men take over the company to transition to online. Led ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the film's start, Mitty's daydreams were extreme and obviously a fantasy, as they explored entirely different movie genres, such as a Latin romance or a Michael Bay action film. These daydreams are almost comedy like, for they are simply unrealistic for a man like Mitty. However, after Mitty's epic adventure begins, these daydreams begin to make sense and they are no longer silly fantasies. This man's realities keep you on the edge of your seat, for he makes choices that not every person would. As a viewer, that is something admirable to take from this inspirational film. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is an amazing movie. The plot evenly spreads hints of comedy, as well as heartwarming moments that stick with you. The soundtrack is incredible, for just listening to the songs on their own evoke urges to travel. Each and every role is played the way they should – Scott seemingly fits with his snarky comments, Wiig is adorable as the love interest and Stiller portrays the perfect boring man turned adrenaline junkie. As the star of comedies, such as Zoolander and Meet The Fockers, Stiller portrays his famous comedic character in this film, mixed with heartwarming tendencies. Walter Mitty is one of us – an average person, just living in the cycle of life. Watching this man's journey escaping the endless loop of everyday is simply inspirational as he does what not all of us have the courage to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
