Damas' Resentment in His Lonely Reality Throughout the poem, Whitewash, Leon Damas construes
the concepts of isolation and resentment to illustrate the disparaging effects toward racial identity.
The author articulates such ideation of "blackness", by which was stolen from him since birth.
Damas portrays this with such intense emotion full of disdain, that all the sentiment bleeds from
within the stanzas with his use of wordplay. Leon Damas was born in Cayenne, French Guiana,
which automatically placed him in the category of having a mixed background since he was born
within the borders of Southern America by the whites and Europeans, nonetheless isolated by the
rest of the entire continent by being confined in a French region overseas. In addition, the title itself,
Whitewash, implies an idea of true identity being obscured by others with intent of making his or
her true identity disappear or become masked permanently as if it did not exist. The poem
commences with discontent for which "they", the white people, treat and behave as if the black
people were in fact, actually assimilated into being the supposed preferable "race", white, when
truly, that is not the case. He desires to be himself, a person of color who should not be treated to
refrain from his background or traditions. This causes Damas to sense helplessness in a
predominantly white environment which rarely has authentic cultural and racial identities just
because of the forced boundaries he was born into. It is evident throughout the poem that his
discontent develops and morphs into intense disdain the people who "ransacked" his Africa.
Although I was initially confused with this statement due to the fact that he was not actually born in
Africa, this disregard of his true foundation is met by demands from the writer who claims that there
will be revenge when "his Africa" reclaims peace. Until then as he says, his hatred will continue to
develop, for the unjust actions to his African people and culture, which will not continue to be

Title
Children have always possessed a sense of adventure, excitement, rebellion and love. While on their
explorations, they not only experience things that seem like wonders to them, but in doing so might
be disobedient because their parents or guardians will not approve of their mischief. Mark Twain
may have been fascinated by the way children act that he decided to create the novel The
Adventures of Tom Sawyer because he wanted to show how much Tom Sawyer's mischievous acts
can cause anger, disappointment, and exasperation to adults in the story in addition to remind adults
of the child they once were.
One of the ways Twain develops the type of character Tom Sawyer is in the novel is when he rebels
against his Aunt Polly. For example, his Aunt Polly orders him to whitewash the fence as
punishment for skipping school just to go swim and have fun. While he was whitewashing, another
boy named Ben Rogers walked by and noticed him whitewashing. Instead of taking the fall and

How Does Tom Sawyer Mature
The main character Tom Sawyer seemed like the most irresponsible kid in the town of St.
Petersburg. Tom had gotten into trouble and his punishment was to whitewash the fence. Even

The book Tom Sawyer was written by Mark Twain and is set in the 1840's. Thomas Sawyer is the
main character in this book and we follow him through his wild adventures. Twain does an excellent
job of capturing all the fears, joys and mischief of childhood. Tom Sawyer is an orphan, he lives
with his Aunt Polly and his half–brother Sid whom he loathes. He is cunning and often manages to
