My Love Of Photography
He had been around the globe and back, looking at thousands of photographs, year after year, day
after day, second after second, trying to fill this hole he had inside of him. It had been eight years
since he lost his mother after a long and hard battle, but it had felt like a century since she was with
him. Her love of photography carried on through him, and her work would never be forgotten. Her
unique style and perspective was like no other, and throughout his career as a buyer of the most
beautiful and most famous photos, he had never seen one quite like hers. He strode down 42nd and
8th avenue in his suede black suit, white tie, leather loafers, and he had his briefcase in hand. The
loud sounds and action of Time Square ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had walked this way many times and had never noticed this tiny old gallery. He then slowly
opened the door. The wooden floors creaked as he walked, the painting on the wall was chipping,
and one could hear a pin drop for the room was entirely empty except for the quite young employee
at the counter. There were very few photographs hanging from the wall, and he thought to himself
that he would not be purchasing anything that day, until he saw it. As he was about to turn back
around and walk out, something caught his eye. His hand unwrapped from the handle of his
briefcase, and it dropped to the floor making a thumping sound. His eyes were opened wide with the
look of complete and utter shock, and his body went numb. For a moment he felt as though
everything in the world had disappeared and the only thing visible was this photograph. He was in
awe of the beauty and the emotion that this photo portrayed. "It can't be." He whispered to himself.
He had remembered that his mother had generated one last collection before her passing. It
consisted of 11 photographs that no other photographer was capable of taking. Her talent and ability
to convey such inspiration and joy through her pictures was the thing she was most known for. She
was so unbelievably talented that her work was just mesmerizing. "Why did she not show me this
last photo?"
This single photograph hanging on the wall of this shabby gallery resembled everything his

Survey of Art History
Survey of Art History II
Man Ray like many other artists did not care to have his personal life shown in his art. He wanted to
be viewed and recognized for his work which included sculptures, paintings, and photography. Man
Ray was mostly influenced by Stieglitz's photographs. Man Ray used a similar style to Stieglitz. He
captured images that created an unvarnished look at the photos' subject. Man Ray discovered a new
way to create his photos; by accident in his work room he discovered how to manipulate objects in
his photos on pieces of photosensitive paper. In the year 1914, at a seminal exhibition, Man Ray
introduced himself to African art. Man Ray did this at the Alfred Stieglitz 291 Gallery. Man Ray's
photograph Noire et Blanche became an icon for modern photography. Although this was his most
famous and widely known piece, Man Ray's less known work made a greater impact and influence
on African art. Photographs with African art pieces began to flourish greatly after Man Ray's break
through with his Noire et Blanche photograph. These photographs shed light on many day to day
issues such as: issues of race, identity, sex, separatism, and disenfranchisement. Noire et Blanche
shows Kiki –Man Ray's companion– with her eyes closed and her head sideways on a table in a very
relaxed manner. With her left hand, Kiki is holding, an African mask known as a Baule Gba Gba
mask. The mask is held straight above the table and right up next to her face. In this time, it was

The Relief and Intaglio Printmaking Process
Describe the Relief Printmaking process. List an artist who uses the form of printmaking. Refer to
this video for more information.
The Relief Printmaking process is a printmaking process in which someone covers a block of
material, such as wood, in ink. Then they proceed to deeply etch out the inked surface in the form of
a design. Once that is done, they lay paper over the block with pressure so that the ink is shared
generously all over the paper. When the paper is removed, the design will have been transferred and
they will have the finished artwork. Using a block of wood is known as Woodcut Relief
Printmaking, or "Woodcuts". There are also Wood Engravings, where a stronger type of wood is
used so an artist can engrave an image into the surface rather than cut it out. In my opinion, the
second step of the process could be left to remain as the art itself. In the video showing the process
as Lyell Castonguay created his piece, "Hydra", I thought the design in the ink coated wood looked
more bold and real than the actually piece. But this may only be for the reason that the finished
product lacked color in comparison. Of course, Lyell isn't the only artist who uses this printmaking
process. Another artist who uses Relief Printmaking is Katsushika Hokusai. Hokusai used the same
process to create his color woodcut piece called "South Wind, Clear Sky", a portrayal of Mount Fuji.

Basic Skills For A Photograph
Basic Skills to Take a Photograph Do you like to take a photograph? Nowadays, many people take a
trip and pictures at travel place, and some people have a hobby that is taking a picture. However,
many people do not know how to take a good picture, so they just use auto functions which make
just general pictures. However, many people want to take a good picture because they want to have
good pictures that are taken at travel place or get nice taking pictures ability. Therefore, you have to
learn three basic skills if you want to take a good picture. Camera iris Camera iris is in lens to
control quantity of light that comes in camera. Camera iris's hole can be controlled, so if iris's hole
becomes big, a lot of light comes in camera, and if it becomes small, just a little of light comes in
camera. When surrounding environment is dark, you want depth of field to be narrow, or you want
shutter speed to be fast, you should control iris' hole to be big. Also, you should control iris's hole to
be small when surrounding environment is bright, you want depth of field to be wide, or you want
shutter speed to be slow, so if you want to take various kind of pictures, you should compare various
kind of irises when you buy new one. Thus, you learn how to use camera iris in order to take various
kind of pictures. Shutter speed Shutter speed is to control exposure of light that comes in camera. In
other word, this meaning is how long a subject is exposure to camera. For example, if the

The Dimensions Of Meaning That The Use Of Photography Brings
The Dimensions of Meaning That the Use of Photography Brings To the Artwork
In addition to the two traditional physical dimensions of an image, every photographic image
utilizes seven dimensions. Four of these dimensions are features of the image itself, and are
exposure, tonality, colour and focus. The remaining three dimensions are subject focused
dimensions, and include constructed and found images, objectivity and complexity. (Ang 2013)
Photography, historically, was initially used to supply knowledge pertaining to sexuality through the
observation of the human body. (Gunkel 2009)
Keeping this in mind, Zanele Muholi's Bra (2003), Zanele Muholi, Bra, 2003 attempts to undermine
discriminatory postcolonial notions of homosexuality as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The focus of the image juxtaposes the sharpness of the subject's torso with the blurriness of the
subject's hands, seemingly active in a clapping motion, and the blurriness of the background, adding
a degree of depth to the image, similar to the depth one would experience were they in the presence
of the portrayed subject.
The clapping motion indicated by the subject's hands in the image, exudes a sense of the subject
applauding the viewer, seemingly reversing the roles between observed and observer. (Gunkel 2009)
Roland Barthes in, "The Photographic Message," explains that the moments in time photographs are
intended to capture are seemingly "a mechanical analogue of reality", a message, if you will. A
message that only becomes discernible after the fact, and it is only then that the importance of the
photograph is embodied. Furthermore, by describing the afore mentioned message it would attach a
"connoted message". (Thomas 2010)
Keeping with the afore mentioned notion of the moment in time captured by photographs being
messages, Muholi's Aftermath (2004), Zanele Muholi, Aftermath, (2004) depicts a woman standing
solely in her underwear with a large scar the length of her right thigh. Her hands curled one on top
of the other covering her vagina. (Thomas 2010)
It is apparent that the woman in the image is a victim of trauma. (Van Der Vlies

The Unique Work of Roy DeCarava
Roy DeCarava was born in 1919 in New York and became a famous photographer whose subjects
focused mostly on urban African Americans and their daily lives. Harlem was where he took most of
his photographs. He originally started out painting and first began using a camera to document
images he would later use in his painting, but over time began to rely on the camera more until that
became his medium for art. Throughout his life, DeCavara was forced to deal with racial
discrimination, which in part led him to begin photographing African Americans and their
experiences in 20th century America. In the 1940's DeCarava began shooting a series photographs in
Harlem, which later were included in his first solo show in 1950. In 1952, Decarava was awarded
Guggenheim Fellowship, and was the first African American photographer to receive this grant. In
1955 he founded A Photographer's Gallery, which was implemented to gain public interest in
photography, and eventually closed due to poor sales. He also started a workshop in 1963
specifically for African American photographers. Though he was an acclaimed artist his career as a
freelance photographer was never completely stable so he looked for other jobs throughout his life.
He became a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated, became an associate professor at Hunter
College and eventually became a full time and distinguished professor there. In 1996, the Museum
of Modern Art a retrospective of DeCavara's works that travelled to many

Photo Based And Installation Art
– Isabel, tell us about your beginning in photography. I earned a BFA from the Pontificia
Universidad Católica in my hometown of Santiago de Chile; it was quite the comprehensive
program. I went in thinking I would do sculpture and came out working in photo–based and
installation art. Though I was instructed in many disciplines from painting to computer–based and
everything in between, the nature of my practice determined that photo–based was the most
appropriate medium to develop the concepts and ideas I was interested in exploring back then. A
year later, I attended grad school in Canada and obtained an MFA from the University of Guelph.
Currently, my practice encompasses the creation of photo–based images, video works, and three–
dimensional objects–concepts manifests simultaneously through a variety of mediums. – How were
The Weekend and Quantum Blink created? The method employed in the creation of Quantum Blink
is a variation from that of The Weekend. The slicing is analog and is the result of direct in–camera
interversions. There was a lot of experimentation with countless materials, and plenty of trial an
error before I could successfully achieve the results I was after. The negative itself has the stripes,
hence the irregularity on the edges and slight overlap which becomes more apparent once the image
is printed larger. While the temporal distance between exposures in The Weekend reached up to
seven months, in Quantum Blink the lapse ranged from a few minutes to an

No, David ! By David Shannon
Imagine your child is always testing your limits by performing mischievous actions. The child is
coloring on the walls of their bedroom, playing baseball in the house, climbing on the furniture,
bringing in dirt from outside, etc. How would you react? With this in mind, No, David! by David
Shannon uses the relationship between pictures and words to demonstrate predictable negative
comments in words from an adult figure in association to relatable child–like behaviors in pictures.
Initially, the cover and title page of the book both play a key role in the layout of the story. On the
cover, the artistic style of the illustration looks like a cartoon and a painting. This style is very
realistic because of the situation portrayed on the cover; yet playful at the same time because of its
comical vibe. The cover also looks three–dimensional and the author seems to be using a
straightforward perspective of art. This idea is led be true because the child, wall, and table with the
fishbowl are all facing towards the reader. The title is also as large in font as the child and fish bowl
are. This shows that the cover is relatively proportional in both text and pictures.
As a result, the child on the cover has sharp teeth and an almost evil grin as he is attempting to pick
up the fish bowl off of a table that is above his head. Secondly, looking at the fish; their facial
expressions show that they are fearful of what is occurring. Both fish have open mouths, as well as
eyes and

Photography Is Not Just About Taking Simple Photographs
In this generation people tend to take their photographs on their phones instead of hiring a
professional photographer to take them. Photography is not just about taking simple photographs.
Professional photographers need to understand the concept of what makes the best photographs.
Photographers must use lighting, different equipment, different types of photographs, and specific
subject matter to create unique photographs as well as how to finish and edit them. The beginning of
photography was in 1826, when Nicephore Niepce produced the first permanent photograph using a
camera obscura. Three years later in 1829, Louis Daguerre joined partnership with Nicephore
Niepce ("Ted 's Photographics – The Fundamental Principles of Photography Explained."). In 1839,
years after the death of Nicephore Niepce, Louis Daguerre became the first photographer to use
silver–iodide coated plates and a small box to take a photograph (Careers in Focus'101). Motion
photographs were made in 1877 using a series of still photographs to create the illusion of motion.
In 1889, Thomas Edison developed the first single–unit motion picture camera; standards that are
still used today (Careers in Focus, 25). Many professional photographers use different type of
equipment: cameras, lenses, and accessories. Many photographers use different cameras and lenses
depending on the type of photograph they're going to take. Many photographers use the 35mm SLR
(single lens reflect) camera. The 35mm SLR is the

Is Photography A Game Of Inventing Meanings
John Berger once said, "One can play a game of inventing meanings." He was conveying the idea
that when one person interprets a photograph to have a particular meaning, the same picture might
have a varying level of significance to another person. In our culture today photographs take on
many roles, both traditional and new. They are used to tell a story and are a port into a particular
moment. Photography allows us to see past initial perceptions and make connections to our
everyday lives. All photography is subjective to different views and therefore contains a set of
diverse meanings. In recent years photography has taken on a more significant role compared to past
generations; it can be used to express these diverse views, and connect people from all different
cultures and backgrounds. We take pictures of many distinct and sometimes trivial moments that
have a powerful meaning to us, and that meaning can now be shared with the world. ¨ And in life,
meaning is not instantaneous. Meaning is discovered in what connects, and cannot exist without
development¨(Berger). Photography is all about connections. The picture is captured, and then
shared with others, the meaning behind it may not be apparent right away, but gradually it comes to
light the longer the image is studied and developed. Today we take photographs to connect us with
specific people in specific places at specific times. When we first view a photograph we have an
initial reaction and the picture will have a

Photographs Capture Time And Create Meaning
Photographs capture time and create meaning. Mark Klett's "Under the Dark Cloth", is a simple, yet
compelling piece of art which captures his experience in Monument Valley, Arizona on May 27th,
1989. The perspective of the photograph is strategic in allowing the viewers to see from Klett's point
of view. This angle places the viewer in the first person, connecting them directly to the image.
Images of landscapes are often engrossing, Klett's piece does this on two planes.
In the text, Visual Methodologies, author, Gillian Rose uses semiotics as a way to make sense of an
image. She defines semiotics as the study of signs and their use or interpretation, or, "how images
make meaning" (pg. 75). Under close inspection of Mark Klett's "Under ... Show more content on

Another question could be looked at through the lens of "positional communication". "Who is
positioned as superior and who inferior?" (pg. 82). The photographer makes the audience feel as if
they are a part of the image, giving the audience a connection to the subject of the photograph. This
allows power within the image to be equally distributed and shared between human and nature.
The objects within the image, such as the watch, camera, and dark cloth connote time, preservation,
and reflection. Klett's use of signs give his photo the purpose it needs to remain captivating. Within
Klett's photo, icons, indexes, and symbols are all presented.
The icon most prevalent in the image is the upside down image of Monument Valley. This iconic
image represents that specific rock structure in the valley. This image is also a synecdochal sign, it is
a part of this rocky range, representing the national park as a whole.
The two indexes that stand out immediately are the camera and the dark cloth. When you see a
camera– you immediately think of documentation or memories. When we think of something under
the dark cloth or in a dark space we think of referees reviewing a play or the process of developing a
photograph. When someone is under the dark cloth, it is a personal, capturing moment. This sign is a
moment of silence and critical reflection.
The symbols which are presented in the photograph include the camera, watch, and the style of the
photograph.

Pricing yourself in the market is important. Many pros complain people give their images away and
devalue the market. I am always interested in what companies are willing to pay for. I often consult
with professionals before I sell images to magazines.
Where do you do most of your work?
The majority of my work is done in UK waters. I live and work in the UK so it makes sense to take
advantage of all the area has to offer. I do work overseas periodically, but I prefer cooler climates.
One goal I have is to dive under sea ice in the Arctic, or Antarctic.
What do you enjoy most about this type of photography?
Being underwater is like no other environment, there's no distraction with mobile phones, and
people talking. I like the challenge of being able to dive in harsh environments and show people the
beauty, especially in the UK, as many feel it's often dark and gloomy and there's no colour.
What is the most important thing to remember to get a good image?
The single most important element in getting a good underwater picture is to get close to your
subject, generally a maximum of three feet for most subjects, sometimes inches away. It depends on
the size of the subject you are shooting. Obviously a 30 foot basking shark is different than a one
inch shrimp. The other thing is all about understanding light, whether you are using artificial light,,
or natural light, or balancing the two. The

Reflection Of Storycorp Interview
Introduction
This paper will discuss the recent events that have happened in this past week. The results of the
personality and values test. How the StoryCorp interview got me closer to my mother. What I
learned about the photographic work field in my informational interview. The online programs I
plan to use for my 21–day APP project. How I hope this class will help my growth as a person.
Summary of Key Findings from Interest, Skills, Values and Personality Surveys I generally try to be
kind to others and I greatly enjoy making people laugh. I would like to incorporate humor into my
Capstone Project and show the beauty of nature. I want my pictures to make people happy whether
it is by laughing or admiring nature. I believe this project will go well with my personality.
StoryCorps Interview Reflection Karen, my mother, and I talked about family and religion. My
mother is a family based woman, she has become more religious in her age. I asked her what her
favorite memories of me were and she brought up events so far in the past I had forgotten them. It
was nice to reminisce about events long past and talk about Heaven. We do not normally talk about
Heaven so it was nice to hear her thoughts about it.
Informational Interview Results The Capstone Project I have chosen does not need a higher
education to pursue after. Mr. Dunahee explained that the degree he went in for was not for
photography. He had ended up in this work field after a friend paid him to do his wedding shots. Mr.
Dunahee told me this after we had finished our interview, I was unsure whether to add it in or not.
Photography is a constantly adapting in order to keep up with all the new technology made
available. Why pay for a photographer when your phone can handle the job? While I greatly admire
the field I do not think it would be a suitable career choice for me. After the interview, Mr. Dunahee
encouraged me to join his class to learn more about photography face to face. While the offer is
tempting, I fear I do not have time to join his class due to my demanding work schedule.
21–Day APP Project Since my work schedule is very hectic I have chosen to take online class to
learn more about photography. I did have a hard time narrowing

We Are A Camera, By Nick Paumgarten
Although a memory may deteriorate over the span of years or even decades, a photograph will last a
lifetime. Images are more than an object to have for safe keeping. In his article, "We Are A Camera,"
Nick Paumgarten discusses the uprising of the popular recording device known as the GoPro. This
device is used to record events and experiences from different perspectives, whether that is from
underwater or zip lining through a forest in a first–person view. Moreover, videos and photography
allow people to capture images to reminisce about past experiences, to share these moments with
others, and even remember those whom you have lost. There are countless debates about how
distracting cell phones and other electronic devices can be however, they can still be used in positive
ways, such as capturing images. Images are a way of recalling events or memories. Certainly, with
these images a person would depict a picture far more vividly than what they could have conjured
up by simply trying to remember the moment. After going through a great experience, people tend to
want to reflect and rejoice at what they had done or gone through. The most memorable moment of
my past would have to be my seventh birthday party. It was a small surprise in the middle of a park
in Fort Lauderdale on a scorching hot day. I recall playing soccer on the grassy plains, receiving
gifts and the abundance of laughter in the air. The only problem is, I only remember vague images in
my mind that I pieced

Analysis Of The Poem ' Happy Valley '
The Hyperthymestic Storyteller Outside of the desk, however, is the rest of the house, the living
place of both the owner of the camera, and the camera itself. It's a two–story house, with 2,986
square feet of area, and a property of a quarter acre. In a greater context, the house is located in
Happy Valley, a suburb southeast of Portland, Oregon. A quick tour around the house shows many
objects that describe the people who live in the house: family pictures, a piano and three violins,
three cars, and Bible verses on the walls. Happy Valley is one of the wealthier suburbs in all of
Portland, with a median salary higher than West Linn or Lake Oswego: the presence of three cars
further exemplifies this. In such a wealthy community, having a quarter–acre house indicates that
the owners of this house must be at least lower middle class or middle class. The presence of the
piano and violins, as well as some paintings on the wall, shows an interest in arts, and with an entire
bookcase of CDs, especially music. Looking at the pictures on the refrigerator, it is clear that this is
a family of four, with two boys. Finally, the presence of Bibles around the house, as well as Bible
verses hung on the walls are a testament to the Christian beliefs of this family. This unassuming
suburban home in America demonstrates many characteristics of the previous society. Christianity is
traditionally a western religion with its roots in Western Europe. Although the religion soon

DSLR camera has many features some of which may sound intimidating at first. The camera
combines a host of optics and digital imaging sensor and single lens reflex camera mechanisms to
capture shots. DSLR camera remain the most popular type of interchangeable lens camera in use
today. The DSLR camera market is dominated by companies such as Canon, Nikon, Sony and
Olympus from Japan as well as manufactures such as Sigma and Leica from Germany. You can use
these features to create highly compelling shoots. The features include custom picture controls,
multiple exposure, flash compensation, back button focus, time lapse and time before sleep feature.
The other features include depth of field preview, Instagram mode and depth of field preview.
Custom picture control
The camera usually applies critical adjustments such as sharpness, contrast and color saturation to
Raw images to make them finer. Indeed if you prefer taking photos in RAW mode, you need not
worry about the settings because it will be amended automatically. If you want to set picture style or
custom picture control, you simply need to go to the menu and change to find custom picture control
settings.
Exposure compensation
Exposure compensation is mostly located around the shutter. The unit allows you to increase or
decrease default meter reading on your camera to account for the brifghtness in the area you are

Henry Peach Robinson : The King Of Photographic Picture...
Henry Peach Robinson Henry Peach Robinson, born on July 9th, 1830, was a British photographer
and prominent author on photography. Known as "the King of Photographic Picture Making," he
began his life's work as a painter but would become one of the most influential photographers of the
late 19th century. He was a prolific advocate for photography as an art form and is well known for
his role in "pictorialism," which, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, is "an approach to
photography that emphasizes beauty of subject matter, tonality, and composition rather than the
documentation of reality." After finishing school at the age of 13, Robinson began an apprenticeship

Robinson was one of the first photographers to setup a staged photo–shoot. He was known to create
outdoor scenes in the studio where he could control the elements as well as the model. His preferred
models were members of high society or paid actors rather than the unsophisticated peasants he was
depicting because he felt that the actual peasants were "dull and awkward" and didn't fit in his
picture perfect settings. He would pose his models to create his ideal scene within the genre. Since
Robinson's goal was to create stills that resembled paintings, he took no issue with combining
elements that were "real" with those that were staged. The effect he was trying to accomplish was
known as the "pictorial effect," a subject that he delves into deeply in his book, Pictorial Effect in
Photography: Being Hints on Composition and Chiaroscuro for Photographers, published in 1869.
In his book, Robinson states, "any dodge, trick and conjuration of any kind is open to the
photographer's use. It is his imperative duty to avoid the mean, the base and the ugly, and to aim to
elevate his subject... and to correct the unpicturesque. a great deal can be done and very beautiful
pictures made, by a mixture of the real and the artificial in a picture." As a pictorialist, Robinson was
of the belief that the photograph should conjure feeling or a particular mood. " 'Art Photography'

Camera Lucid Reflections Of Photography
"What the Photograph reproduces to infinity has occurred only once: the Photograph mechanically
repeats what could never be repeated existentially," Roland Barthes stated in his book Camera
Lucida: Reflections of Photography. Photography is the key to capturing a moment in time that will
not reoccur again. You can try, but it will not be that exact moment you once saw before. A camera
is a very powerful tool. It allows the artist to use it to display and present their message they are
trying to get across to their audience and artistic view. A photograph will keep time frozen and allow
us the audience to re–experience whenever we want to. The reason I mention stopping time is
because in the image named Carmen photographed by Richard Avedon he did just that. This
photograph is of a woman jumping over a puddle. Richard Avedon stopped time and created this
fashion and street image all in one, quite beautiful may I add. Many people can try to recreate this
image but never will they get the exact leap. From photographing identification cards for the
merchant marines, making it all the way into the fashion world, the iconic American photographer,
Richard Avedon. He was best known for his fashion photography as well as his large–scale

Exploring The Life Of Eugene Atget
Exploring the Life of Eugene Atget
Biographical and autobiographical information on Atget in his lifetime is scarce to be found
however we do know a small amount. He was born into a working class family, in Libourne France
in the winter of 1857. Libourne lays near Bordeaux, an intrinsically prerevolutionary feeling city,
whose architecture and sights may have been an underlying attraction to his Old Paris
documentation. Orphaned at the young age of five years old, Atget came to be raised by his
grandparents until he was able to work and live on his own. He is speculated to have spent some
time at sea during the early 1870s, however inconclusive evidence may be, he may have worked as a
cabin boy. During this time he developed an inclination to act, and eventually gained entry to the
Conservatoire D'art Dramatique in Paris in 1879. Unfortunately his obligation to server time in the
military prevented him from finishing his studies at the conservatory. After briefly managing a
humorist magazine to no financial or positional avail, Atget pursued a career as an itinerant actor.
His acting escapades turned sour, unremarkable, and were short lived. He quit acting for good in
1887, but his passion for it was never lost, and between 1904 and 1913, Atget lectured about theater
at universities in and surrounding Paris. While searching for a new path to take his life down, Atget
contemplated over both photography and painting. In his endeavors to paint, he must have realized

Gregory Crewdson's work is very inspiring he manages to complete an entire story an entire
character art all in one image and you really get involved in his world. Using light and colour
cinematically places a major roll, the picture becomes an operatic framing device there so rich with
props and all the other little details that when you look closer you will find something different
Crewdson works with a medium format camera, eight by ten colour negatives each print is fifty–
nine inches by nighty inches, when you look close at his image you see clarity and detail. Crewsdon

Crewdson understood how to read images his interest is to understand and reveal secretes about life,
his photographs helps establish order within chaos of everyday life.
To contemplate what is going on in this photograph I think it is left up to the viewer to find for
themselves what the meaning is behind the photograph does this make crewdson's work not as deep
because there is no hidden message or meaning in his work I don't believe it should be just on those
criteria what took me to this image in the first place was the mystery where the narrative to this
image is open to interpretation were the photograph is not showing what has happened before or
after it is left up to the viewer's imagination to find the answer. The capacity of this photograph is
not to tell you anything at all the image hovers around reality and fiction and the image remains
open ended.
Gregory Crewdson works in two distinct ways to create his photographs. On one hand, he works on
location in real neighborhoods and townships. On the other hand, the artist works on the soundstage
inventing his world from scratch. Before the photographic location productions start, Crewdson
drives around upstate Massachusetts looking for interesting settings, which he then has prepared in
an elaborate process. In most cases, local residents of the ramshackle towns also play the characters
in his work. Crewdson works

Enter The Void Essay
Enter The Void (2010) is a film about a young man, Oscar who lives with his sister in Tokyo, Japan.
He is shot dead by police whilst taking hallucinogenic drugs and becomes trapped in an intermediate
state of existence; his soul drifting high above the streets of the red–light district of Tokyo watching
over his now completely alone sister on a hallucinatory journey, intoxicated, neon–lit with daring
aesthetics that have to be seen to be believed. Gasper Noé is a director who is never afraid of
unnerving or even scaring his audience, love him or hate him he is relentlessly battling to push the
boundaries of the medium.
Eight years before Enter the Void, Gasper Noé's titles for Irreversible (2002) were equally puissant
and dynamic. The colossal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It perfectly encapsulates the essence of the film, Kirlian photography is sometimes known as 'aura
photography'. Today self–professed "medical intuitivists" or 'psychics' believe that by using the
Kirlian technique you can study a person's energy field or aura that exists outside the body. When a
high voltage, high–frequency electrical discharge is applied across a grounded object. It shows a
fuzzy glow around the object. Much like the effects of DMT. Enter the Void is shot entirely through
the eyes of Oscar, we see everything through his eyes and when he smokes DMT we share his
vision. In a sense the title sequence is preparing the audience for their DMT fuelled journey through
kaleidoscopic Tokyo. DMT(Dimethyltryptamine) is also the chemical released at death and is
responsible for our dreams producing an energy and spiritual interactions sending the person into an
eternal trance; somewhat like an infinite dream that is ultimately a lucid fantasy. The title sequence
encapsulates this by applying the same effect to the words in the title sequence so the audience has
no choice but to 'Enter the

The Signs Of The Age Of Modernity
Invented in the first half of the nineteenth century, photography became one of the signs of the age
of modernity. Following the official announcement of the invention in 1839, photographers were
dispatched to various parts of the world to document its marvels. The first places to be photographed
in the Middle East were Palestine and Egypt shortly after the invention was announced. The rest of
the Ottoman lands, Persia, and the Indian Subcontinent were also among the regions that were
photographed soon after. European political, religious and colonial interests were initially the main
reason behind the choice of what places were photographed first. Biblical history was the main
motive behind photographing in Palestine, and ancient Egyptian history and the rise in the studies of
archaeology were the motives for photographing the Pyramids. However, the British photographers
primarily in connection with the empire's colonial interests in that region heavily photographed
India.
The Arabian Peninsula, at the time, held little interest in the wider imagination of the Europeans, a
fact that resulted in a delay in its visual representation. Still, the rising interest in the Islamic culture
and the lifestyle of the Bedouins would eventually lead photographers in that region. At least one
native, one Egyptian and a few European photographers photographed Mecca and Medina in the
middle of the nineteenth century. In this context, concern with photographing Oman and the Gulf
region were

How Does I Use The Rule Of Thirds Composition?
Since my photographs are all centered on the idea of depression, I chose to edit them all with a
selenium tone because depression is often described as "having all of the color drained out of your
life" or "seeing everything in black and white." I also chose to use less contrast in the photos that
were depicting more serious aspects of depression (i.e. the one that shows the girl cutting herself), to
emphasize that the deeper you sink into it the more grey and bland your life becomes, almost like
nothing has definition anymore. In most of my photographs, I tried to use the Rule of Thirds
composition whenever I could, but sometimes I didn't find that perspective aesthetically pleasing for
my picture, so I tried a new angle. As far as framing goes, I tend to do mostly medium shots because
they're what I'm most comfortable with editing, but I also took a few close ups when I felt that the
photo needed more emotional emphasis. In one of my close up shots (the one with the girl looking
out the window), I chose to angle it in a way that allowed her to have lookspace because I wanted to
be able to blur the background and create that narrow depth of field to emphasize the part of
depression in which the person is present but not really there. For all of my photographs I only use
natural light along with the built in flash on my camera because when I shoot outdoors I enjoy
having that lighting. I also like editing with natural light because, even though it 's kind of difficult

The Career As A Musician
Music may be a universal medium, but musician are far from all being treated equally. It has
become nearly impossible to make it in the music industry, and those who do often will not succeed
for very long. Yet, it is still an illusive field and one that society depends on for entertainment. By
creating documentaries about musicians, viewers get a behind the scenes look at what being a
musician truly entails, whether it is good or bad. For Ken Vandermark, his career as a musician is a
struggle, as documented by Daniel Kraus's Musician, because of his niche genre for contemporary
society. Madonna, on the other hand, has created a career as a pop icon, as documented by Alek
Keshishian's Madonna: Truth or Dare, which may be financially successful, but is not always
rewarding. Both Kraus and Keshishian employ similar tactics for their respective documentaries;
however, through the use of different camera angles, relations to the subject, and display of live
music, they are able to provide unique insight into the artists they are following. Throughout
Musician, Kraus uses multiple camera angles in order to develop the narrative of the documentary.
His two most frequently used, extreme close ups and wide angle, are both frequently found
throughout the film to create poignant moments in the film. Extreme close ups are most commonly
used while Vandermark is performing, allowing viewers to see his unwavering focus and passion for
his work. From the very beginning of the film,

Analysis Of ' Hockey Game ' By Andy Warhol
The image that I have chosen from Artstor, to demonstrate the understanding of the visual culture is
a painting titled, "Hockey Game". This image was created by Andy Warhol who was an American
painter, printmaker and filmmaker from 1928 until 1987. There is no date on this piece. The actual
size of this image is 8 by 10 inches and the material used is Gelaton silver print. Among the images
found in Artstor, there is more than one image called the Hockey Game, created by the same author
which are shots in time of pieces of specific hockey games. The image I choose, was of two pairs of
players fighting with another player with a referee. Finding this image was achieved through the
digital library Artstor, choosing all collections and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With each view having different ideologies when viewing an image, the artist in this case has left the
power of his influence up to the value of the viewer. "Ideologies are produced and affirmed through
the social institutions that characterize a given society, such as the family, education, medicine, the
law, the government, the entertainment industry, among others" (p.23). As a hockey player and
coach, I would view this image of a hockey fight as a natural progression of the game. If a person,
ignorant to the game of hockey viewed this image, they may take offense or even be upset with the
turn of events of the game. It is interesting that the there are a series of pictures called the "Hockey
Game" created by Warhol, not all at the same game but showing different events of a game through
this TV screen. I think the power of the series would give a viewer a much more vivid image or
representation of hockey than the one specific image I choose a given instance in time.
The second visual concept that will aid in the explanation of my visual analysis is the concept of
realism and perception. "Art and images are in one view, a practice dedicated to the visual and
material reproduction of things and events in the world. In this view, we might say that there are
things in the world and then there are their representation". (p.143). It is

Edward Weston 's Influence On The World Of Photography Essay
Edward Weston was seen as one of the leading pioneers of photography in the 20th century. His
contribution to the world of photography is one that was able to bring new possibilities to the field.
His style of photography was unique to him at the time and offered the art community very original
works of art. This style of Weston's was one of high resolution and clarity, though it did not come
until midway in his career. Weston would soon collaborate with other artists that shared his tastes to
form the f/64 group. Before becoming the world renowned photographer, Weston started as a
humble and novice photographer (Edward Weston).
As a matter of fact, Weston was interested in photography from an early age. Consequently on his
16th birthday, Weston's father gave him a Kodak Bulls–Eye number two camera. This was Weston's
first camera which he began to use to take pictures of his aunt 's farm and Chicago parks. His
photo's were average for the time and even landed him an exhibit in the Chicago Art Institute at the
age of 17. Weston then traveled to California and became a surveyor of the land, which helped him
gain an interest in the state and also the landscape. After working in California for some time,
Weston made his way back to Illinois to attend the Illinois College of Photography. This did not
keep Weston away from California for very long though. Within six months, Weston returned to
California and created the Camera Pictorialists of Los Angeles in 1909 (Edward

The Great Mayan City Of Tikal
The world has been made unforgettable with the creation of photography.
As mankind rapidly evolved recording events became harder. Early history is only able to be
pictured with using our imagination. Often times historians often clash about what the world looked
like. Ancient civilizations from the Mayans and Aztecs have never been seen while they were in
their pristine condition. The world is left with written descriptions and ruins not only of the cities
themselves, but also the tools used. After the camera was invented in the early 1800s, events were
more frequently recorded and it was clear what tools and cities looked like before modern–day.
Photography has undoubtedly altered how we document events, created new job openings, and will
give generations to come amazing art and show defining moments from each generation.
Photography has helped evolve the world by creating new jobs and revolutionizing how events are
documented.
Before photography, capturing moments and keeping them alive was through word of mouth, or
written on paper. The great Mayan City of Tikal was finally constructed by 600 A.D. Tikal was said
to have had immense sports arenas, multiple hospitals, schools, and libraries. When the Spaniards
came around 1000 A.D., the Maya had vanished, leaving the ruins of their city behind. The
Spaniards documented what was seen, but some notes were unclear or lost (Maya). After the camera
had been invented in 1826 by Joseph Niepce, people were skeptical if it would

How The Signs That Can Be Present Within These Phenomena
Photography in itself, is a means of communication, it can be used in a variety of ways in order to
narrate the world around us [Campbell, D (2010)]. As a species, humanity itself has proven to be
visual beings, creating pictures across a variety of mediums in order to express ourselves and
represent what is happening in the world around us. Images, whether they be paintings, drawings, or
photographs, have played and continue to play a very important part in our society, as everyone is
able to understand the image and interpret the story from it, despite barriers such as language which
may prohibit initial communication, and the work of scholars and anthropologists, and even
consumers of visual culture work tirelessly to decrypt and derive meaning from these mediums
[Perlmutter, DD (2003)]. Analysis and understanding of the signs that can be present within these
phenomena is known as 'semiotics', which is derived from the Greek word semeion, for 'sign'. It can
be applied across a broad range of cultural mediums used in communication. Semiotics stresses the
open–ended possibilities for any interpretation and the indeterminacy of meaning that can be taken
from visual cues, and within photography, signs and visual communication of a story is paramount
[Semiotics (2010)]. But is photography, in particular, landscape photography, able to convey the
fullness of a story, and can everyone interpret the images and signs within those images the way
they were meant to be understood, or

Film, La Jetee As A Reference Point For My Discussion Essay
Can a pictorial narrative be formed purely through the use of images? It is a question many have
sought to answer, and one that is becoming increasingly relevant as our literary concepts evolve to
keep pace with developments in modern technologies. I have chosen to use the ciné–roman designed
by Bruce Mau from Chris Marker's 1962 science–fiction film La Jetée as a reference point for my
discussion. The film is constructed almost entirely of still–images, shot through a Pentax camera.
Involving the "future destruction of Paris," the film follows a prisoner haunted by the image of a
woman from his childhood, sent through time by his controllers (Lupton 2005, 87). The ciné–roman
presents the film's still–images in a graphic novel format, with English and French subtitles
positioning the film's voice–over into text on the page. Ultimately, I will attempt to argue that
images can be used to create a purely pictorial narrative, in reference to the theories of visual culture
expressed by Barthes, Burgin, Berger and Baetens, among others. It is important to note that the
ciné–roman exists independently from its predecessor: "the French ciné–roman is a novel or film
scenario designed to read not necessarily in conjunction with the film upon which it is based"
(Santoro 1996, 37). As such, while I will direct some attention to the discussion of the tension
between the ciné–roman's and its cinematic predecessor, I have chosen to focus my deeper
discussion on the implications of image

Your photography goals will help determine which sensor size is required. If you have already
decided that you are purchasing a medium format camera, this information is less important for you
than for others since the medium format camera uses the medium format sensor. However, if you
expect to purchase one of the other camera types, such as an SLR, DSLR, or a compact/mirrorless
camera, you will want to learn more about the common sensor sizes.
It's important to be aware that sensor size and sensor resolution are different, and that the resolution
of the final image is related to both of these, plus other, specifications. The largest sensor size
commonly used in the more common camera types is called the full–frame sensor, which is most
similar to 35mm film. The APS–H, APS–C, and Four Thirds sensors have smaller dimensions and
are commonly called crop sensors. Note that for each of these dimensions, the sensitivity or number
of pixels can vary, resulting in potentially different resolutions for that particular sensor size.
Manufacturers are pushing the technical capabilities and hardware as much as possible, so be sure to
read about their most recent releases if resolution is a priority for you. Very generally speaking, the
larger sensor, the higher the potential resolution. If your goal is large–sized, fine art prints, the larger
the sensor you can reasonably purchase makes sense. Otherwise, for smaller sized prints, including

Racial Stereotypes : Race And American Culture Essay
Racial stereotypes more or less affect our perceptions toward race, and judge people in a certain
frame unconsciously, as Omi set forth in In Living Color: Race and American Culture. It greatly
impact the images of minorities on the visual media, which the most direct medium to reflect the
popular beliefs. Even though the "racist beliefs" have "just recently being reversed", the portrayal of
minorities on visual media is still not exemplary (Horton, et al "PORTRAYAL OF MINORITIES IN
THE FILM, MEDIAAND ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRIES").
Taken by Hilary Swift, this photo presents an African American woman, waiting for a bus that can
take her to the Kitchen of Love, a food pantry that located in Philadelphia aiming to feed people
suffering from hunger. She is currently a volunteer there as stated in the article on New York Times.
It happens at dawn so it's still dark outside. The surroundings give us an idea that it is likely taking
place in a black neighborhood. (Stolberg "Black Voters, Aghast at Trump, Find a Place of Food and
Comfort"). At first sight, the photo indeed implies the theme that this African American woman
looking forward to helping out the other people in need the community. The color is desaturated and
the darkness takes over most part of the picture, which serves as a foil to the woman's florescent
pink jacket. Though the figure is small in the photo because of the extreme long shot, her outfit
makes her stand out and grab the audience's attention immediately.

Taryn Simon : An American Documentary Photographer
Taryn Simon Taryn Simon is an American documentary photographer from New York born in 1975.
She was heavily inspired by her father, who had been stationed in the USSR at the height of the
Cold War, in Bangkok during the Vietnam War, and had travelled to Afghanistan, Iran, and Israel on
government business. As he photographed these trips extensively, Simon was surrounded by
photographs of foreign places and events– many of which would come to have a large impact on
contemporary American history– from a young age. These photographs were not distant and
unknown only to her, but would also have been so for most Americans during the time. Her interest
of the relationships between image and text, as well as the systems of categorisation and
classification she employs in many of her works is also inspired by her father, who worked
intensively with both in his career. Her work is generally process–driven, and requires extensive
research. Simon has published four major bodies of work since 2003, and has exhibited
internationally in galleries spanning over 10 countries including France, Germany, Belgium, South
Korea, and England. 'An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar' (2007) An American Index

glaciers. He is helping the world by providing scientists and the world information on glaciers, how
they form, how they melt and how they are going to change the world if we continue to be ignorant
of the issue. He has been a part of the National Geographic team for over thirty years and has

Analysis Of Donald Blumberg 's ' The Master '
Through August 21 to November 22 2015, Yale University Art Gallery is presenting Donald
Blumbergs Photographs: Selection from the Master Sets. 160 photographs from last six decades.
Donald Blumberg is a contemporary American photographer born in 1935. In his early carrier, his
work focused on street photography; later on he developed his own style showing mass media,
identity and consumerism. His black and white photographs explore space, politics and surrounding
us culture. The exhibition is divided in sections, showing different periods of time and subjects that
Blumberg was interested in at that time.
His earlier work in the 60's shows streets of New York City, both urban areas as people living there.
What's interesting in his work is that he not only captured everyday life, but also signs,
advertisements and newspapers, which give us more information about past events. His street
photography resulted in an amazing series "In Front of Saint Patrick's Cathedral". He used the black
of the cathedral doorway as a frame to photograph people emerging from the church. He used a long
exposure to black out any detail inside of the cathedral, and concentrated on the people. The success
of the series is in an unexpected angles and composition he used. Sometimes he would put all the
people clustered in a corner or show only heads on the edge of a photo. His work is very high
contrast and dynamic. Some of the figures in the photos are blurry; ghost like figures representing

Information and Arguments Contained in Images Essay
Images contain arguments, whether if there are many or just a few. A series of images with no words
but contains an argument is a pictorial essay. John Berger's Ways of Seeing (1972) contains both
word and pictorial essays. The book is divided into seven sections, three being pictorials. In the very
first chapter of the book, Berger made it clear that "the way one image follows another, their
succession, constructs an argument which becomes irreversible." Having noted that, it would seem
that the sixth essay argues that an observation painting provides more information than that of a
directed or arranged portrait. Images that are next to one another in the book such as Sarah Burge,
1883. Dr.Barnardo's Homes and Murillo Bartolomé's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In these two images however, the observational artwork provides much more information than the
arranged portrait possibly because there is a lot more action and emotion being show in the image. It
is agreeable that observational images does provide much more information than arranged portraits
also because of the surrounding background as well as the actions shown in the images. The
information that we unconsciously get from images such as Johann Zoffany's Charles, Third Duke
of Richmond and Sale of Pictures and Slaves in the Rotunda, New Orleans, is the time period which
it may have occurred in and what kind of lifestyle both parties are living in. There is also action and
movement in the image and what could possibly be the century it was painted in. In contrast,
Mademoiselle de Clermont shows the viewers that the artist is more focused on the subject because
she is looking directly at the artist. There is also no sense of communication between the servants in
the image with her; this does not show any information except for the status difference between the
any three women. If there were some sort of communication between the women, there possibly
would be more information that the viewer can take such what kind of relationship the women have
with each other as well as the personality of each women. In comparison to the other two previous
images, even though this painting does provide a background, it is not enough to provide the viewer

A Brief Note On Wildlife Photography, And For Good Reason
Wildlife photography is a very popular area to specialise in, and for good reason. It gives you a great
excuse to spend extended periods of time outdoors, keeps you fit, and allows you to develop a real
appreciation for the natural world. But it can also be a very challenging field too, especially since
your subject is often running away from you! I 'm going to share with you 15 of my top tips so that
you can start improving your wildlife photos straight away. Hopefully by the end of this article you
'll have learnt something new that will help you on your journey to becoming the next Art Wolfe. 1.
Shoot on Eye–level When you 're standing up and shooting an animal on the ground, your angle of
view is pointing downwards. This detracts from the photo, making the perspective seem strange. It
also decreases the distance between the subject and the background, getting rid of your chance for
that nice, soft bokeh (background). Instead, get onto eye–level with your subject. It brings the
viewer down onto the animal 's level, creating a much more interesting perspective. It will most
likely increase the distance between the subject and the background too, removing distracting
elements by throwing the backdrop out of focus. 2. Learn About Your Subject Getting to know the
animal you 're photographing can be a really helpful trick. If you know about an animal 's typical
behavioural traits, then you will be able to predict movements or particular things you can focus on
capturing.

My Love Of Photography

  • 1. My Love Of Photography He had been around the globe and back, looking at thousands of photographs, year after year, day after day, second after second, trying to fill this hole he had inside of him. It had been eight years since he lost his mother after a long and hard battle, but it had felt like a century since she was with him. Her love of photography carried on through him, and her work would never be forgotten. Her unique style and perspective was like no other, and throughout his career as a buyer of the most beautiful and most famous photos, he had never seen one quite like hers. He strode down 42nd and 8th avenue in his suede black suit, white tie, leather loafers, and he had his briefcase in hand. The loud sounds and action of Time Square ... The wooden floors creaked as he walked, the painting on the wall was chipping, and one could hear a pin drop for the room was entirely empty except for the quite young employee at the counter. There were very few photographs hanging from the wall, and he thought to himself that he would not be purchasing anything that day, until he saw it. As he was about to turn back around and walk out, something caught his eye. His hand unwrapped from the handle of his briefcase, and it dropped to the floor making a thumping sound. His eyes were opened wide with the look of complete and utter shock, and his body went numb. For a moment he felt as though everything in the world had disappeared and the only thing visible was this photograph. He was in awe of the beauty and the emotion that this photo portrayed. "It can't be." He whispered to himself. He had remembered that his mother had generated one last collection before her passing. It consisted of 11 photographs that no other photographer was capable of taking. Her talent and ability to convey such inspiration and joy through her pictures was the thing she was most known for. She was so unbelievably talented that her work was just mesmerizing. "Why did she not show me this last photo?" This single photograph hanging on the wall of this shabby gallery resembled everything his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Survey of Art History Survey of Art History II Man Ray like many other artists did not care to have his personal life shown in his art. He wanted to be viewed and recognized for his work which included sculptures, paintings, and photography. Man Ray was mostly influenced by Stieglitz's photographs. Man Ray used a similar style to Stieglitz. He captured images that created an unvarnished look at the photos' subject. Man Ray discovered a new way to create his photos; by accident in his work room he discovered how to manipulate objects in his photos on pieces of photosensitive paper. In the year 1914, at a seminal exhibition, Man Ray introduced himself to African art. Man Ray did this at the Alfred Stieglitz 291 Gallery. Man Ray's photograph Noire et Blanche became an icon for modern photography. Although this was his most famous and widely known piece, Man Ray's less known work made a greater impact and influence on African art. Photographs with African art pieces began to flourish greatly after Man Ray's break through with his Noire et Blanche photograph. These photographs shed light on many day to day issues such as: issues of race, identity, sex, separatism, and disenfranchisement. Noire et Blanche shows Kiki –Man Ray's companion– with her eyes closed and her head sideways on a table in a very relaxed manner. With her left hand, Kiki is holding, an African mask known as a Baule Gba Gba mask. The mask is held straight above the table and right up next to her face. In this time, it was ... • 4. The Relief and Intaglio Printmaking Process Describe the Relief Printmaking process. List an artist who uses the form of printmaking. Refer to this video for more information. The Relief Printmaking process is a printmaking process in which someone covers a block of material, such as wood, in ink. Then they proceed to deeply etch out the inked surface in the form of a design. Once that is done, they lay paper over the block with pressure so that the ink is shared generously all over the paper. When the paper is removed, the design will have been transferred and they will have the finished artwork. Using a block of wood is known as Woodcut Relief Printmaking, or "Woodcuts". There are also Wood Engravings, where a stronger type of wood is used so an artist can engrave an image into the surface rather than cut it out. In my opinion, the second step of the process could be left to remain as the art itself. In the video showing the process as Lyell Castonguay created his piece, "Hydra", I thought the design in the ink coated wood looked more bold and real than the actually piece. But this may only be for the reason that the finished product lacked color in comparison. Of course, Lyell isn't the only artist who uses this printmaking process. Another artist who uses Relief Printmaking is Katsushika Hokusai. Hokusai used the same process to create his color woodcut piece called "South Wind, Clear Sky", a portrayal of Mount Fuji. • 5. Basic Skills For A Photograph Basic Skills to Take a Photograph Do you like to take a photograph? Nowadays, many people take a trip and pictures at travel place, and some people have a hobby that is taking a picture. However, many people do not know how to take a good picture, so they just use auto functions which make just general pictures. However, many people want to take a good picture because they want to have good pictures that are taken at travel place or get nice taking pictures ability. Therefore, you have to learn three basic skills if you want to take a good picture. Camera iris Camera iris is in lens to control quantity of light that comes in camera. Camera iris's hole can be controlled, so if iris's hole becomes big, a lot of light comes in camera, and if it becomes small, just a little of light comes in camera. When surrounding environment is dark, you want depth of field to be narrow, or you want shutter speed to be fast, you should control iris' hole to be big. Also, you should control iris's hole to be small when surrounding environment is bright, you want depth of field to be wide, or you want shutter speed to be slow, so if you want to take various kind of pictures, you should compare various kind of irises when you buy new one. • 6. The Dimensions Of Meaning That The Use Of Photography Brings The Dimensions of Meaning That the Use of Photography Brings To the Artwork In addition to the two traditional physical dimensions of an image, every photographic image utilizes seven dimensions. Four of these dimensions are features of the image itself, and are exposure, tonality, colour and focus. The remaining three dimensions are subject focused dimensions, and include constructed and found images, objectivity and complexity. (Ang 2013) Photography, historically, was initially used to supply knowledge pertaining to sexuality through the observation of the human body. (Gunkel 2009) Keeping this in mind, Zanele Muholi's Bra (2003), Zanele Muholi, Bra, 2003 attempts to undermine discriminatory postcolonial notions of homosexuality as ... The focus of the image juxtaposes the sharpness of the subject's torso with the blurriness of the subject's hands, seemingly active in a clapping motion, and the blurriness of the background, adding a degree of depth to the image, similar to the depth one would experience were they in the presence of the portrayed subject. The clapping motion indicated by the subject's hands in the image, exudes a sense of the subject applauding the viewer, seemingly reversing the roles between observed and observer. (Gunkel 2009) Roland Barthes in, "The Photographic Message," explains that the moments in time photographs are intended to capture are seemingly "a mechanical analogue of reality", a message, if you will. A message that only becomes discernible after the fact, and it is only then that the importance of the photograph is embodied. Furthermore, by describing the afore mentioned message it would attach a "connoted message". (Thomas 2010) Keeping with the afore mentioned notion of the moment in time captured by photographs being messages, Muholi's Aftermath (2004), Zanele Muholi, Aftermath, (2004) depicts a woman standing solely in her underwear with a large scar the length of her right thigh. Her hands curled one on top of the other covering her vagina. (Thomas 2010) It is apparent that the woman in the image is a victim of trauma. (Van Der Vlies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Unique Work of Roy DeCarava Roy DeCarava was born in 1919 in New York and became a famous photographer whose subjects focused mostly on urban African Americans and their daily lives. Harlem was where he took most of his photographs. He originally started out painting and first began using a camera to document images he would later use in his painting, but over time began to rely on the camera more until that became his medium for art. Throughout his life, DeCavara was forced to deal with racial discrimination, which in part led him to begin photographing African Americans and their experiences in 20th century America. In the 1940's DeCarava began shooting a series photographs in Harlem, which later were included in his first solo show in 1950. In 1952, Decarava was awarded Guggenheim Fellowship, and was the first African American photographer to receive this grant. In 1955 he founded A Photographer's Gallery, which was implemented to gain public interest in photography, and eventually closed due to poor sales. He also started a workshop in 1963 specifically for African American photographers. Though he was an acclaimed artist his career as a freelance photographer was never completely stable so he looked for other jobs throughout his life. He became a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated, became an associate professor at Hunter College and eventually became a full time and distinguished professor there. • 8. Photo Based And Installation Art – Isabel, tell us about your beginning in photography. I earned a BFA from the Pontificia Universidad Católica in my hometown of Santiago de Chile; it was quite the comprehensive program. I went in thinking I would do sculpture and came out working in photo–based and installation art. Though I was instructed in many disciplines from painting to computer–based and everything in between, the nature of my practice determined that photo–based was the most appropriate medium to develop the concepts and ideas I was interested in exploring back then. A year later, I attended grad school in Canada and obtained an MFA from the University of Guelph. Currently, my practice encompasses the creation of photo–based images, video works, and three– dimensional objects–concepts manifests simultaneously through a variety of mediums. – How were The Weekend and Quantum Blink created? The method employed in the creation of Quantum Blink is a variation from that of The Weekend. The slicing is analog and is the result of direct in–camera interversions. There was a lot of experimentation with countless materials, and plenty of trial an error before I could successfully achieve the results I was after. The negative itself has the stripes, hence the irregularity on the edges and slight overlap which becomes more apparent once the image is printed larger. While the temporal distance between exposures in The Weekend reached up to seven months, in Quantum Blink the lapse ranged from a few minutes to an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. No, David ! By David Shannon Imagine your child is always testing your limits by performing mischievous actions. The child is coloring on the walls of their bedroom, playing baseball in the house, climbing on the furniture, bringing in dirt from outside, etc. How would you react? With this in mind, No, David! by David Shannon uses the relationship between pictures and words to demonstrate predictable negative comments in words from an adult figure in association to relatable child–like behaviors in pictures. Initially, the cover and title page of the book both play a key role in the layout of the story. On the cover, the artistic style of the illustration looks like a cartoon and a painting. This style is very realistic because of the situation portrayed on the cover; yet playful at the same time because of its comical vibe. The cover also looks three–dimensional and the author seems to be using a straightforward perspective of art. This idea is led be true because the child, wall, and table with the fishbowl are all facing towards the reader. The title is also as large in font as the child and fish bowl are. This shows that the cover is relatively proportional in both text and pictures. As a result, the child on the cover has sharp teeth and an almost evil grin as he is attempting to pick up the fish bowl off of a table that is above his head. Secondly, looking at the fish; their facial expressions show that they are fearful of what is occurring. Both fish have open mouths, as well as eyes and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Photography Is Not Just About Taking Simple Photographs In this generation people tend to take their photographs on their phones instead of hiring a professional photographer to take them. Photography is not just about taking simple photographs. Professional photographers need to understand the concept of what makes the best photographs. Photographers must use lighting, different equipment, different types of photographs, and specific subject matter to create unique photographs as well as how to finish and edit them. The beginning of photography was in 1826, when Nicephore Niepce produced the first permanent photograph using a camera obscura. Three years later in 1829, Louis Daguerre joined partnership with Nicephore Niepce ("Ted 's Photographics – The Fundamental Principles of Photography Explained."). In 1839, years after the death of Nicephore Niepce, Louis Daguerre became the first photographer to use silver–iodide coated plates and a small box to take a photograph (Careers in Focus'101). Motion photographs were made in 1877 using a series of still photographs to create the illusion of motion. In 1889, Thomas Edison developed the first single–unit motion picture camera; standards that are still used today (Careers in Focus, 25). Many professional photographers use different type of equipment: cameras, lenses, and accessories. Many photographers use different cameras and lenses depending on the type of photograph they're going to take. Many photographers use the 35mm SLR (single lens reflect) camera. The 35mm SLR is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Is Photography A Game Of Inventing Meanings John Berger once said, "One can play a game of inventing meanings." He was conveying the idea that when one person interprets a photograph to have a particular meaning, the same picture might have a varying level of significance to another person. In our culture today photographs take on many roles, both traditional and new. They are used to tell a story and are a port into a particular moment. Photography allows us to see past initial perceptions and make connections to our everyday lives. All photography is subjective to different views and therefore contains a set of diverse meanings. In recent years photography has taken on a more significant role compared to past generations; it can be used to express these diverse views, and connect people from all different cultures and backgrounds. We take pictures of many distinct and sometimes trivial moments that have a powerful meaning to us, and that meaning can now be shared with the world. ¨ And in life, meaning is not instantaneous. Meaning is discovered in what connects, and cannot exist without development¨(Berger). Photography is all about connections. The picture is captured, and then shared with others, the meaning behind it may not be apparent right away, but gradually it comes to light the longer the image is studied and developed. Today we take photographs to connect us with specific people in specific places at specific times. When we first view a photograph we have an initial reaction and the picture will have a ... • 12. Photographs Capture Time And Create Meaning Photographs capture time and create meaning. Mark Klett's "Under the Dark Cloth", is a simple, yet compelling piece of art which captures his experience in Monument Valley, Arizona on May 27th, 1989. The perspective of the photograph is strategic in allowing the viewers to see from Klett's point of view. This angle places the viewer in the first person, connecting them directly to the image. Images of landscapes are often engrossing, Klett's piece does this on two planes. In the text, Visual Methodologies, author, Gillian Rose uses semiotics as a way to make sense of an image. She defines semiotics as the study of signs and their use or interpretation, or, "how images make meaning" (pg. 75). Under close inspection of Mark Klett's "Under ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another question could be looked at through the lens of "positional communication". "Who is positioned as superior and who inferior?" (pg. 82). The photographer makes the audience feel as if they are a part of the image, giving the audience a connection to the subject of the photograph. This allows power within the image to be equally distributed and shared between human and nature. The objects within the image, such as the watch, camera, and dark cloth connote time, preservation, and reflection. Klett's use of signs give his photo the purpose it needs to remain captivating. Within Klett's photo, icons, indexes, and symbols are all presented. The icon most prevalent in the image is the upside down image of Monument Valley. This iconic image represents that specific rock structure in the valley. This image is also a synecdochal sign, it is a part of this rocky range, representing the national park as a whole. The two indexes that stand out immediately are the camera and the dark cloth. When you see a camera– you immediately think of documentation or memories. When we think of something under the dark cloth or in a dark space we think of referees reviewing a play or the process of developing a photograph. When someone is under the dark cloth, it is a personal, capturing moment. This sign is a moment of silence and critical reflection. The symbols which are presented in the photograph include the camera, watch, and the style of the photograph. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I live and work in the UK so it makes sense to take advantage of all the area has to offer. I do work overseas periodically, but I prefer cooler climates. One goal I have is to dive under sea ice in the Arctic, or Antarctic. What do you enjoy most about this type of photography? Being underwater is like no other environment, there's no distraction with mobile phones, and people talking. I like the challenge of being able to dive in harsh environments and show people the beauty, especially in the UK, as many feel it's often dark and gloomy and there's no colour. What is the most important thing to remember to get a good image? The single most important element in getting a good underwater picture is to get close to your subject, generally a maximum of three feet for most subjects, sometimes inches away. It depends on the size of the subject you are shooting. Obviously a 30 foot basking shark is different than a one inch shrimp. How the StoryCorp interview got me closer to my mother. What I learned about the photographic work field in my informational interview. The online programs I plan to use for my 21–day APP project. How I hope this class will help my growth as a person. Summary of Key Findings from Interest, Skills, Values and Personality Surveys I generally try to be kind to others and I greatly enjoy making people laugh. I would like to incorporate humor into my Capstone Project and show the beauty of nature. I want my pictures to make people happy whether it is by laughing or admiring nature. I believe this project will go well with my personality. StoryCorps Interview Reflection Karen, my mother, and I talked about family and religion. My mother is a family based woman, she has become more religious in her age. I asked her what her favorite memories of me were and she brought up events so far in the past I had forgotten them. It was nice to reminisce about events long past and talk about Heaven. We do not normally talk about Heaven so it was nice to hear her thoughts about it. Informational Interview Results The Capstone Project I have chosen does not need a higher education to pursue after. Mr. Dunahee explained that the degree he went in for was not for photography. He had ended up in this work field after a friend paid him to do his wedding shots. Mr. Dunahee told me this after we had finished our interview, I was unsure whether to add it in or not. Photography is a constantly adapting in order to keep up with all the new technology made available. Why pay for a photographer when your phone can handle the job? While I greatly admire the field I do not think it would be a suitable career choice for me. After the interview, Mr. Dunahee encouraged me to join his class to learn more about photography face to face. • 15. We Are A Camera, By Nick Paumgarten Although a memory may deteriorate over the span of years or even decades, a photograph will last a lifetime. Images are more than an object to have for safe keeping. In his article, "We Are A Camera," Nick Paumgarten discusses the uprising of the popular recording device known as the GoPro. This device is used to record events and experiences from different perspectives, whether that is from underwater or zip lining through a forest in a first–person view. Moreover, videos and photography allow people to capture images to reminisce about past experiences, to share these moments with others, and even remember those whom you have lost. There are countless debates about how distracting cell phones and other electronic devices can be however, they can still be used in positive ways, such as capturing images. Images are a way of recalling events or memories. Certainly, with these images a person would depict a picture far more vividly than what they could have conjured up by simply trying to remember the moment. After going through a great experience, people tend to want to reflect and rejoice at what they had done or gone through. The most memorable moment of my past would have to be my seventh birthday party. It was a small surprise in the middle of a park in Fort Lauderdale on a scorching hot day. I recall playing soccer on the grassy plains, receiving gifts and the abundance of laughter in the air. The only problem is, I only remember vague images in my mind that I pieced ... It's a two–story house, with 2,986 square feet of area, and a property of a quarter acre. In a greater context, the house is located in Happy Valley, a suburb southeast of Portland, Oregon. A quick tour around the house shows many objects that describe the people who live in the house: family pictures, a piano and three violins, three cars, and Bible verses on the walls. Happy Valley is one of the wealthier suburbs in all of Portland, with a median salary higher than West Linn or Lake Oswego: the presence of three cars further exemplifies this. In such a wealthy community, having a quarter–acre house indicates that the owners of this house must be at least lower middle class or middle class. The presence of the piano and violins, as well as some paintings on the wall, shows an interest in arts, and with an entire bookcase of CDs, especially music. Looking at the pictures on the refrigerator, it is clear that this is a family of four, with two boys. Finally, the presence of Bibles around the house, as well as Bible verses hung on the walls are a testament to the Christian beliefs of this family. • 18. Henry Peach Robinson : The King Of Photographic Picture... Henry Peach Robinson Henry Peach Robinson, born on July 9th, 1830, was a British photographer and prominent author on photography. Known as "the King of Photographic Picture Making," he began his life's work as a painter but would become one of the most influential photographers of the late 19th century. He was a prolific advocate for photography as an art form and is well known for his role in "pictorialism," which, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, is "an approach to photography that emphasizes beauty of subject matter, tonality, and composition rather than the documentation of reality." After finishing school at the age of 13, Robinson began an apprenticeship for a bookseller/ printer. During this time he studied art and even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Robinson was one of the first photographers to setup a staged photo–shoot. He was known to create outdoor scenes in the studio where he could control the elements as well as the model. His preferred models were members of high society or paid actors rather than the unsophisticated peasants he was depicting because he felt that the actual peasants were "dull and awkward" and didn't fit in his picture perfect settings. He would pose his models to create his ideal scene within the genre. Since Robinson's goal was to create stills that resembled paintings, he took no issue with combining elements that were "real" with those that were staged. The effect he was trying to accomplish was known as the "pictorial effect," a subject that he delves into deeply in his book, Pictorial Effect in Photography: Being Hints on Composition and Chiaroscuro for Photographers, published in 1869. In his book, Robinson states, "any dodge, trick and conjuration of any kind is open to the photographer's use. It is his imperative duty to avoid the mean, the base and the ugly, and to aim to elevate his subject... and to correct the unpicturesque. a great deal can be done and very beautiful pictures made, by a mixture of the real and the artificial in a picture." As a pictorialist, Robinson was of the belief that the photograph should conjure feeling or a particular mood. • 19. Camera Lucid Reflections Of Photography "What the Photograph reproduces to infinity has occurred only once: the Photograph mechanically repeats what could never be repeated existentially," Roland Barthes stated in his book Camera Lucida: Reflections of Photography. Photography is the key to capturing a moment in time that will not reoccur again. You can try, but it will not be that exact moment you once saw before. A camera is a very powerful tool. It allows the artist to use it to display and present their message they are trying to get across to their audience and artistic view. A photograph will keep time frozen and allow us the audience to re–experience whenever we want to. The reason I mention stopping time is because in the image named Carmen photographed by Richard Avedon he did just that. This photograph is of a woman jumping over a puddle. Richard Avedon stopped time and created this fashion and street image all in one, quite beautiful may I add. Many people can try to recreate this image but never will they get the exact leap. From photographing identification cards for the merchant marines, making it all the way into the fashion world, the iconic American photographer, Richard Avedon. He was best known for his fashion photography as well as his large–scale character–revealing portraits. • 20. Exploring The Life Of Eugene Atget Exploring the Life of Eugene Atget Biographical and autobiographical information on Atget in his lifetime is scarce to be found however we do know a small amount. He was born into a working class family, in Libourne France in the winter of 1857. Libourne lays near Bordeaux, an intrinsically prerevolutionary feeling city, whose architecture and sights may have been an underlying attraction to his Old Paris documentation. Orphaned at the young age of five years old, Atget came to be raised by his grandparents until he was able to work and live on his own. He is speculated to have spent some time at sea during the early 1870s, however inconclusive evidence may be, he may have worked as a cabin boy. During this time he developed an inclination to act, and eventually gained entry to the Conservatoire D'art Dramatique in Paris in 1879. Unfortunately his obligation to server time in the military prevented him from finishing his studies at the conservatory. After briefly managing a humorist magazine to no financial or positional avail, Atget pursued a career as an itinerant actor. His acting escapades turned sour, unremarkable, and were short lived. He quit acting for good in 1887, but his passion for it was never lost, and between 1904 and 1913, Atget lectured about theater at universities in and surrounding Paris. While searching for a new path to take his life down, Atget contemplated over both photography and painting. In his endeavors to paint, he must have realized ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. The Signs Of The Age Of Modernity Invented in the first half of the nineteenth century, photography became one of the signs of the age of modernity. Following the official announcement of the invention in 1839, photographers were dispatched to various parts of the world to document its marvels. The first places to be photographed in the Middle East were Palestine and Egypt shortly after the invention was announced. The rest of the Ottoman lands, Persia, and the Indian Subcontinent were also among the regions that were photographed soon after. European political, religious and colonial interests were initially the main reason behind the choice of what places were photographed first. Biblical history was the main motive behind photographing in Palestine, and ancient Egyptian history and the rise in the studies of archaeology were the motives for photographing the Pyramids. However, the British photographers primarily in connection with the empire's colonial interests in that region heavily photographed India. The Arabian Peninsula, at the time, held little interest in the wider imagination of the Europeans, a fact that resulted in a delay in its visual representation. Still, the rising interest in the Islamic culture and the lifestyle of the Bedouins would eventually lead photographers in that region. • 24. How Does I Use The Rule Of Thirds Composition? Since my photographs are all centered on the idea of depression, I chose to edit them all with a selenium tone because depression is often described as "having all of the color drained out of your life" or "seeing everything in black and white." I also chose to use less contrast in the photos that were depicting more serious aspects of depression (i.e. the one that shows the girl cutting herself), to emphasize that the deeper you sink into it the more grey and bland your life becomes, almost like nothing has definition anymore. In most of my photographs, I tried to use the Rule of Thirds composition whenever I could, but sometimes I didn't find that perspective aesthetically pleasing for my picture, so I tried a new angle. As far as framing goes, I tend to do mostly medium shots because they're what I'm most comfortable with editing, but I also took a few close ups when I felt that the photo needed more emotional emphasis. In one of my close up shots (the one with the girl looking out the window), I chose to angle it in a way that allowed her to have lookspace because I wanted to be able to blur the background and create that narrow depth of field to emphasize the part of depression in which the person is present but not really there. For all of my photographs I only use natural light along with the built in flash on my camera because when I shoot outdoors I enjoy having that lighting. It has become nearly impossible to make it in the music industry, and those who do often will not succeed for very long. Yet, it is still an illusive field and one that society depends on for entertainment. By creating documentaries about musicians, viewers get a behind the scenes look at what being a musician truly entails, whether it is good or bad. For Ken Vandermark, his career as a musician is a struggle, as documented by Daniel Kraus's Musician, because of his niche genre for contemporary society. Madonna, on the other hand, has created a career as a pop icon, as documented by Alek Keshishian's Madonna: Truth or Dare, which may be financially successful, but is not always rewarding. Both Kraus and Keshishian employ similar tactics for their respective documentaries; however, through the use of different camera angles, relations to the subject, and display of live music, they are able to provide unique insight into the artists they are following. Throughout Musician, Kraus uses multiple camera angles in order to develop the narrative of the documentary. His two most frequently used, extreme close ups and wide angle, are both frequently found throughout the film to create poignant moments in the film. His style of photography was unique to him at the time and offered the art community very original works of art. This style of Weston's was one of high resolution and clarity, though it did not come until midway in his career. Weston would soon collaborate with other artists that shared his tastes to form the f/64 group. Before becoming the world renowned photographer, Weston started as a humble and novice photographer (Edward Weston). As a matter of fact, Weston was interested in photography from an early age. Consequently on his 16th birthday, Weston's father gave him a Kodak Bulls–Eye number two camera. Early history is only able to be pictured with using our imagination. Often times historians often clash about what the world looked like. Ancient civilizations from the Mayans and Aztecs have never been seen while they were in their pristine condition. The world is left with written descriptions and ruins not only of the cities themselves, but also the tools used. After the camera was invented in the early 1800s, events were more frequently recorded and it was clear what tools and cities looked like before modern–day. Photography has undoubtedly altered how we document events, created new job openings, and will give generations to come amazing art and show defining moments from each generation. Photography has helped evolve the world by creating new jobs and revolutionizing how events are documented. Before photography, capturing moments and keeping them alive was through word of mouth, or written on paper. The great Mayan City of Tikal was finally constructed by 600 A.D. Tikal was said to have had immense sports arenas, multiple hospitals, schools, and libraries. When the Spaniards came around 1000 A.D., the Maya had vanished, leaving the ruins of their city behind. • 30. How The Signs That Can Be Present Within These Phenomena Photography in itself, is a means of communication, it can be used in a variety of ways in order to narrate the world around us [Campbell, D (2010)]. As a species, humanity itself has proven to be visual beings, creating pictures across a variety of mediums in order to express ourselves and represent what is happening in the world around us. Images, whether they be paintings, drawings, or photographs, have played and continue to play a very important part in our society, as everyone is able to understand the image and interpret the story from it, despite barriers such as language which may prohibit initial communication, and the work of scholars and anthropologists, and even consumers of visual culture work tirelessly to decrypt and derive meaning from these mediums [Perlmutter, DD (2003)]. Analysis and understanding of the signs that can be present within these phenomena is known as 'semiotics', which is derived from the Greek word semeion, for 'sign'. It can be applied across a broad range of cultural mediums used in communication. Semiotics stresses the open–ended possibilities for any interpretation and the indeterminacy of meaning that can be taken from visual cues, and within photography, signs and visual communication of a story is paramount [Semiotics (2010)]. • 31. Film, La Jetee As A Reference Point For My Discussion Essay Can a pictorial narrative be formed purely through the use of images? It is a question many have sought to answer, and one that is becoming increasingly relevant as our literary concepts evolve to keep pace with developments in modern technologies. I have chosen to use the ciné–roman designed by Bruce Mau from Chris Marker's 1962 science–fiction film La Jetée as a reference point for my discussion. The film is constructed almost entirely of still–images, shot through a Pentax camera. Involving the "future destruction of Paris," the film follows a prisoner haunted by the image of a woman from his childhood, sent through time by his controllers (Lupton 2005, 87). The ciné–roman presents the film's still–images in a graphic novel format, with English and French subtitles positioning the film's voice–over into text on the page. Ultimately, I will attempt to argue that images can be used to create a purely pictorial narrative, in reference to the theories of visual culture expressed by Barthes, Burgin, Berger and Baetens, among others. It is important to note that the ciné–roman exists independently from its predecessor: "the French ciné–roman is a novel or film scenario designed to read not necessarily in conjunction with the film upon which it is based" (Santoro 1996, 37). As such, while I will direct some attention to the discussion of the tension between the ciné–roman's and its cinematic predecessor, I have chosen to focus my deeper discussion on the implications of image ... • 33. Evaluation Of The Wildlife Photographer, Shooting... Technical specifications matter. They can also be confusing or overwhelming. Many of the previously discussed topics will help you know which technical specifications to research, as only some of them will be important to you and your photography goals. For the wildlife photographer, shooting tethered is a feature that may never be used. On the other hand, a portrait photographer or stock photographer may find tethered shooting invaluable. Other technical details will be determined by your personal preferences, such as which type of storage or batteries you want to invest in. These are considerations you can research in general before visiting your camera store, with specific pros and cons discussed with your salesperson as you discuss ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Your photography goals will help determine which sensor size is required. If you have already decided that you are purchasing a medium format camera, this information is less important for you than for others since the medium format camera uses the medium format sensor. However, if you expect to purchase one of the other camera types, such as an SLR, DSLR, or a compact/mirrorless camera, you will want to learn more about the common sensor sizes. It's important to be aware that sensor size and sensor resolution are different, and that the resolution of the final image is related to both of these, plus other, specifications. The largest sensor size commonly used in the more common camera types is called the full–frame sensor, which is most similar to 35mm film. The APS–H, APS–C, and Four Thirds sensors have smaller dimensions and are commonly called crop sensors. Note that for each of these dimensions, the sensitivity or number of pixels can vary, resulting in potentially different resolutions for that particular sensor size. Manufacturers are pushing the technical capabilities and hardware as much as possible, so be sure to read about their most recent releases if resolution is a priority for you. Very generally speaking, the larger sensor, the higher the potential resolution. If your goal is large–sized, fine art prints, the larger the sensor you can reasonably purchase makes sense. Even though the "racist beliefs" have "just recently being reversed", the portrayal of minorities on visual media is still not exemplary (Horton, et al "PORTRAYAL OF MINORITIES IN THE FILM, MEDIAAND ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRIES"). Taken by Hilary Swift, this photo presents an African American woman, waiting for a bus that can take her to the Kitchen of Love, a food pantry that located in Philadelphia aiming to feed people suffering from hunger. She is currently a volunteer there as stated in the article on New York Times. It happens at dawn so it's still dark outside. The surroundings give us an idea that it is likely taking place in a black neighborhood. (Stolberg "Black Voters, Aghast at Trump, Find a Place of Food and Comfort"). At first sight, the photo indeed implies the theme that this African American woman looking forward to helping out the other people in need the community. The color is desaturated and the darkness takes over most part of the picture, which serves as a foil to the woman's florescent pink jacket. Though the figure is small in the photo because of the extreme long shot, her outfit makes her stand out and grab the audience's attention immediately. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Taryn Simon : An American Documentary Photographer Taryn Simon Taryn Simon is an American documentary photographer from New York born in 1975. She was heavily inspired by her father, who had been stationed in the USSR at the height of the Cold War, in Bangkok during the Vietnam War, and had travelled to Afghanistan, Iran, and Israel on government business. As he photographed these trips extensively, Simon was surrounded by photographs of foreign places and events– many of which would come to have a large impact on contemporary American history– from a young age. These photographs were not distant and unknown only to her, but would also have been so for most Americans during the time. Her interest of the relationships between image and text, as well as the systems of categorisation and classification she employs in many of her works is also inspired by her father, who worked intensively with both in his career. Her work is generally process–driven, and requires extensive research. Simon has published four major bodies of work since 2003, and has exhibited internationally in galleries spanning over 10 countries including France, Germany, Belgium, South Korea, and England. 'An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar' (2007) An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar is a diverse collection of curiosities of modern American culture capturing the various domains of "science, government, medicine, entertainment, nature, security, and religion." Donald Blumberg is a contemporary American photographer born in 1935. In his early carrier, his work focused on street photography; later on he developed his own style showing mass media, identity and consumerism. His black and white photographs explore space, politics and surrounding us culture. The exhibition is divided in sections, showing different periods of time and subjects that Blumberg was interested in at that time. His earlier work in the 60's shows streets of New York City, both urban areas as people living there. What's interesting in his work is that he not only captured everyday life, but also signs, advertisements and newspapers, which give us more information about past events. His street photography resulted in an amazing series "In Front of Saint Patrick's Cathedral". He used the black of the cathedral doorway as a frame to photograph people emerging from the church. He used a long exposure to black out any detail inside of the cathedral, and concentrated on the people. The success of the series is in an unexpected angles and composition he used. Sometimes he would put all the people clustered in a corner or show only heads on the edge of a photo. His work is very high contrast and dynamic. Some of the figures in the photos are blurry; ghost like figures representing passing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Information and Arguments Contained in Images Essay Images contain arguments, whether if there are many or just a few. A series of images with no words but contains an argument is a pictorial essay. John Berger's Ways of Seeing (1972) contains both word and pictorial essays. The book is divided into seven sections, three being pictorials. In the very first chapter of the book, Berger made it clear that "the way one image follows another, their succession, constructs an argument which becomes irreversible." Having noted that, it would seem that the sixth essay argues that an observation painting provides more information than that of a directed or arranged portrait. Images that are next to one another in the book such as Sarah Burge, 1883. Dr.Barnardo's Homes and Murillo Bartolomé's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In these two images however, the observational artwork provides much more information than the arranged portrait possibly because there is a lot more action and emotion being show in the image. It is agreeable that observational images does provide much more information than arranged portraits also because of the surrounding background as well as the actions shown in the images. The information that we unconsciously get from images such as Johann Zoffany's Charles, Third Duke of Richmond and Sale of Pictures and Slaves in the Rotunda, New Orleans, is the time period which it may have occurred in and what kind of lifestyle both parties are living in. There is also action and movement in the image and what could possibly be the century it was painted in. In contrast, Mademoiselle de Clermont shows the viewers that the artist is more focused on the subject because she is looking directly at the artist. There is also no sense of communication between the servants in the image with her; this does not show any information except for the status difference between the any three women. If there were some sort of communication between the women, there possibly would be more information that the viewer can take such what kind of relationship the women have with each other as well as the personality of each women. In comparison to the other two previous images, even though this painting does provide a background, it is not enough to provide the viewer with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. A Brief Note On Wildlife Photography, And For Good Reason Wildlife photography is a very popular area to specialise in, and for good reason. It gives you a great excuse to spend extended periods of time outdoors, keeps you fit, and allows you to develop a real appreciation for the natural world. But it can also be a very challenging field too, especially since your subject is often running away from you! I 'm going to share with you 15 of my top tips so that you can start improving your wildlife photos straight away. Hopefully by the end of this article you 'll have learnt something new that will help you on your journey to becoming the next Art Wolfe. 1. Shoot on Eye–level When you 're standing up and shooting an animal on the ground, your angle of view is pointing downwards. This detracts from the photo, making the perspective seem strange. It also decreases the distance between the subject and the background, getting rid of your chance for that nice, soft bokeh (background). Instead, get onto eye–level with your subject. It brings the viewer down onto the animal 's level, creating a much more interesting perspective. It will most likely increase the distance between the subject and the background too, removing distracting elements by throwing the backdrop out of focus. 2. Learn About Your Subject Getting to know the animal you 're photographing can be a really helpful trick. If you know about an animal 's typical behavioural traits, then you will be able to predict movements or particular things you can focus on capturing. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
