There can be no doubt Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ.
The one anointed, set apart by God the Father. He is set apart to inherit every nation on earth. To rule with respect, and smash, shatter to pieces, nations who plot, people who make useless plans, kings who join together against the Lord.
He is also set apart, commissioned, to bless and protect.
He washes away our sins purifying us with His blood!
2. MESSIAH [meh SIGH uh] (anointed one)-- the
one anointed by God and empowered by God's
spirit to deliver His people and establish His
kingdom. In Jewish thought, the Messiah would
be the king of the Jews, a political leader who
would defeat their enemies and bring in a
golden era of peace and prosperity. In Christian
thought, the term Messiah refers to Jesus' role
as a spiritual deliverer, setting His people free
from sin and death.
3. The word Messiah comes from a Hebrew term
that means "anointed one.“
Its Greek counterpart is Christos, from which
the word Christ comes.
Messiah was one of the titles used by early
Christians to describe who Jesus was.
4. In Old Testament times, part of the ritual of
commissioning a person for a special task was
to anoint him with oil. The phrase anointed one
was applied to a person in such cases. In the
Old Testament, Messiah is used more than 30
times to describe kings, (2 Sam. 1:14,16) priests,
(Lev. 4:3,5,16) the patriarchs, (Ps. 105:15) and even
the Persian King Cyrus. (Is. 45:1)
5. The word is also used in connection with King
David, who became the model of the messianic
king who would come at the end of the age.
(2 Sam. 22:51; Ps. 2:2) But it was not until the time
of Daniel (sixth century B. C.) that Messiah was
used as an actual title of a king who would
come in the future. (Dan. 9:25-26) Still later, as
the Jewish people struggled against their
political enemies, the Messiah came to be
thought of as a political, military ruler.
6. I want to establish the word Messiah, Anointed
One, is one commissioned, set apart for a
special task.
We see kings, priest, & patriarchs anointed, set
apart specifically for a certain task, job.
Let’s look at what Jesus is anointed, set apart
for in Psalms 2.
7. Psalms 2:1 NIV
Why do the nations conspire and the peoples
plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers
band together against the LORD and against his
anointed, saying, 3 "Let us break their chains
and throw off their shackles."
8. 4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord
scoffs at them.
5 He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies
them in his wrath, saying,
6 "I have installed my king on Zion, my holy
mountain."
9. 7 I will proclaim the LORD's decree:
He said to me, "You are my son;
today I have become your father.
8 Ask me, and I will make the nations your
inheritance, the ends of the earth your
possession.
9 You will break them with a rod of iron; you will
dash them to pieces like pottery."
10. 10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned,
you rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his
rule with trembling.
12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your
way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath
can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
11. He is set apart to inherit every nation on earth.
To rule with respect, and smash, shatter to
pieces, nations who plot, people who make
useless plans, kings who join together against
the Lord.
He is also set apart, commissioned, to bless and
protect.
12. The last part of the 12th verses says, Blessed
are all who take refuge in him.
Isn’t it comforting to know you will be blessed
and protected if and when you go to Him, take
refuge in Him. We could teach a whole lesson
on how we are blessed and protected when we
become Christians, become His. We’ll not look
at all the blessings at this time, but be
comforted that belonging to Christ brings
abundant blessings and protection.
13. I want to show you something very interesting
in the prophetic verses in Daniel which refer to
the Messiah, the Chosen Leader.
Daniel 9:25 NIV "Know and understand this:
From the time the word goes out to restore and
rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the
ruler, comes, there will be seven 'sevens,' and
sixty-two 'sevens.' It will be rebuilt with streets
and a trench, but in times of trouble.
14. This revelation of the Messiah pertained not
only to His coming but also to His chronology.
Not only was there revealed the person of the
Messiah but also the period of the Messiah.
It is generally accepted that each week
represents 7 years so that the “70 weeks” would
be 490 years. This period of 70 weeks
reckoned, From the time the word goes out to
restore and rebuild Jerusalem.
15. In 457 B.C. King Artaxerxes commissioned Ezra
to rebuild Jerusalem.
The 60 prophetic weeks of verse 25 equals 483
years, which from the date of 457 B.C. brings us
to A.D. 26, about the time Jesus is believed to
have been baptized.
This is representative of His being set apart for
the sacrifice for sin.
16. If we look at the birth of Jesus we see right off
He is the Anointed One, Messiah, Christ.
We know this because it was announced to the
shepherds by an angel from God.
17. Luke 2:6 NIV While they were there, the time
came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave
birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in
cloths and placed him in a manger, because
there was no guest room available for them. 8
And there were shepherds living out in the
fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at
night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them,
and the glory of the Lord shone around them,
and they were terrified.
18. 10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid.
I bring you good news that will cause great joy
for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David
a Savior has been born to you; he is the
Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you:
You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying
in a manger." 13 Suddenly a great company of
the heavenly host appeared with the angel,
praising God and saying, 14 "Glory to God in
the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those
on whom his favor rests."
19. There can be no doubt Jesus is the Messiah, the
Christ.
The one anointed, set apart by God the Father.
The angel said plainly He is the Messiah,
(anointed one) the Lord.
It’s as plain as the reconstructed nose on my
face. He is the One!
Malachi tells us Jesus, the Lord, was set apart
to be the Messenger who is coming with God’s
promise.
20. Malachi 3:1 NIV "I will send my messenger, who
will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly
the Lord you are seeking will come to his
temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom
you desire, will come," says the LORD Almighty.
2 But who can endure the day of his coming?
Who can stand when he appears? For he will be
like a refiner's fire or a launderer's soap.
21. Isn’t it unique that John calls Jesus “The Word”
and Malachi says He is the Messenger bringing
the promise?
The Messenger will bring the Promise, the
Covenant, the Testament, the Word of God.
I find this fascinating.
Did you hear Malachi also say Jesus will wash
us, clean us, purify us?
22. He said in the 2nd verse; For he will be like a
refiner's fire or a launderer's soap.
Is this not referring to how He washes away our
sins purifying us with His blood becoming as
Luke put it, our horn of salvation?
23. Luke 1:68 NIV "Praise be to the Lord, the God of
Israel, because he has come to his people and
redeemed them. 69 He has raised up a horn of
salvation for us in the house of his servant
David,
24. He is set apart, anointed to be the messenger
who brings us the Promise.
It is upon this promise, His words, Him, that we
must build.
If we build on anything else what is built will be
destroyed, it will fall to ruin.
25. Matthew 7:21 NIV "Not everyone who says to
me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of
heaven, but only the one who does the will of
my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to
me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy
in your name and in your name drive out
demons and in your name perform many
miracles?'
26. 23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew
you. Away from me, you evildoers!' 24
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of
mine and puts them into practice is like a wise
man who built his house on the rock. 25 The
rain came down, the streams rose, and the
winds blew and beat against that house; yet it
did not fall, because it had its foundation on the
rock.
27. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine
and does not put them into practice is like a
foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The
rain came down, the streams rose, and the
winds blew and beat against that house, and it
fell with a great crash."
28. It is imperative we take this to heart and only
build our lives, our relationships, the church on
Jesus and the word He brings us from the
Father.
Paul reminds the saints in Ephesus that they
must build on Jesus making Him the most
important stone.
29. Ephesians 2:17 NIV He came and preached
peace to you who were far away and peace to
those who were near. 18 For through him we
both have access to the Father by one Spirit. 19
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and
strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people
and also members of his household, 20 built on
the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
with Christ Jesus himself as the chief
cornerstone.
30. 21 In him the whole building is joined together
and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
22 And in him you too are being built together to
become a dwelling in which God lives by his
Spirit.
31. We must build on this foundation so we will
become a holy temple and become a dwelling in
which God’s own Spirit lives.
Isn’t this what the whole goal of mankind should
be, having God live in us as individuals and as a
congregation?
This must be our goal, to live and build on His
word.
32. Is God living in you?
Have you prepared a place that He would want
to live in?
Do you need the cleaning Jesus was set apart to
do with His blood so God will want to move in?
33. Please believe and confess Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of God.
Turn to God in repentance and let Jesus clean,
wash away your sins in the watery grave of
baptism.
Continually live your life and build upon the
Words of Jesus.
