There are many problems in the world that have yet to be resolved however a major one is sleep
deprivation in teenagers. Sleep deprivation affects everyone greatly but not as bad as teenagers.
Sleep deprivation even though it is a problem itself also creates smaller problems that need to be
resolved first. One significant problems is economical.
One economic problem in sleep deprivation is problems with accidents caused by sleep deprivation.
One example of this is in the article "Students Aren't Getting Enough Sleep–School Starts Too
Early" from The Atlantic by Jessica Layhey, "'For example, an important recent study published this
spring by Dr. Kyla Wahlstrom documented the positive effects of school start time delay in over
9000 students from eight high schools in three states, including improved grades and standardized
test scores and up to a 65 to 70 percent reduction in teen car accidents.'" This can show how a
reduction in car accidents can lower the amount of money that is spent on things like repairs,
medical treatment etc. Sleep deprivation can possibly lead to alcohol and drug abuse as stated in the
Huffington Post article "5 Scary Health Effects Of Sleep Deprivation During The Teen Years" which
can lead to car accidents which can go on their record possibly making it harder to get jobs in the
future.

comes to sleep. If one fails to acquire the appropriate amount of R.E.M sleep and sleeps less than
six hours everyday for one week, then that person would have a total sleep debt of seven to fourteen

The age ranges for the participants were selected based off of previous research regarding
development during puberty; sleep patterns during college and the transition between adolescence
and adulthood. The subjects for this study were otherwise healthy individuals subjected to sleep–
deprivation manipulation over the course of two nights, with most of the deprivation occurring the
