Seagram Building Research Paper
The Seagram building is simple but historic at the same time, looking at it from a far view you don't get to observe its uniqueness. The Seagram
building was designed by Mies van der Rode and was completed in 1958, the building is mostly made of glass and metal, it shows simplicity which
was what Mies van der Rode believed in. Uses bronze I–beams, which its mainly for the facade to look elegant since is not the main function in the
structure to sustain the building itself, but inside the building is where the real support is located and is also luxurious with the bronze, marble and
travertine. Big open space in front of the building causes the building to be pushed back from Park avenue, but it creates an urban Plaza. Lever House
is located almost in front of the Seagram Building, was design by Gordon Bunshaft and Natalie de Blois and was completed in 1952. ... Show more

The Controversy Of Material Displacement
The controversy of material displacement, from their primary structural means.
Material displacement, absurd formation and facadism, creates discussion, challenges the viewers and provokes polarised opinions. Architects within
the current era, are expressive, artistically driven, technologically aided and therefore experimental. These factors have encouraged outrageous designs
and statements. The outcomes have provoked controversy, which are expressed through various mediums, such as media, articles, debates and lectures.
An architect that has created many controversial buildings, is non other than Frank Gehry. The individual whose works are considered between
pragmatic professionalism and radical experimentation. One building that will be further articulated and examined, is the Dr Chau Chak Wing
Building, University of Technology Sydney (UTS). A building spawned from a sketch, and an idea of a tree house and as Gehry himself said "A
growing, learning organism with many branches of thought, some robust and some ephemeral and delicate". The intention of the design was to
develop it inside–out, which has undoubtedly shaped the branding and marketing efforts of the school. The greatest controversial statement made
towards the building, is its absurd and somewhat organic display of a 'fabric' like, brick facade. A facade that has been sculpted in a way that has never
been attempted quite like that before. All to achieve the concept of 'movement', a fabric like quality with a

Analysis Of Daughters Of The Dust
Introduction to film
Daughters of the Dust (1991), Dir. Julie Dash Scene analysis
Daughters of the dust revolves around an early 20th century African American family from Ibo Landing which is a time not shy of racism and slavery,
especially in middle America. The scene depicted in the movie where a young girl is running through the forest in an all–white dress with a blue ribbon
who seems to be being followed by a man in a hide and seek manor. The young girl disappears and the man stumbles upon a plot of land that is a
graveyard, with headstones made from wooden planks, the man observes his surroundings. Presumably, this girl in white is the young voice
narrating the next scene which pans through steam over to a flash back of the ancestors who were slaves. We look across a field of men and
women who are working over these steaming wells, as well as the people in the background hanging soaked sheets up to dry. We see these people
mixing over a steaming hole in the ground scraping around a grey paste. The workers then begin to pull the paste out of the steaming pits and scrape it
into wooden molds. They appear to be making cement blocks as a young boy watches and older man collect all the wooden brick molds and
systematically knocks the brick from the mold and piles them orderly on both his left as well as his right. While doing so he sings an old hymn, the
boy seems to enjoy watching this process. Throughout the entire scene, there is a narration of a girl which speaks

Life Cycle Analysis for Brick
Life Cycle Analysis For Brick
1Materials are very important in construction industry because with the combination of different material, we can create a very strong and unique
building form. There are many type of material that commonly used in the construction industry, for example the glass, woods, bricks, stones, marble,
concretes and etc. Brick is one of the most commonly used materials in Malaysia, because almost every house in housing area was built by bricks.
From this essay I want to give analysis about the brick life cycle included its origin and how the brick being used after the end of its life cycle.

After that is the drying period, in which the air is heated to a maximum temperature for the clay being dried, the humidity is gradually decreased to
allow the clay to dry uniformly all the way through. And the third which is the cooling stage, in which the temperature is gradually decreased to
uniformity. The clay is not fully dried when placed in the kiln. Hygroscopic water is not driven off at ordinary temperatures or even at the boiling
point of water. In fact, the temperature often rises quite a bit above the boiling point before the water is completely evolved. The watersmoking is
accomplished by fire in the kiln furnaces. Wood is frequently used for this purpose, to avoid sooting. In the watersmoking period it is desired to heat
up the brick, evaporate and remove the moisture, and to accomplish this successfully, it is very necessary that draft be strong. The watersmoking is the
most critical point in the life of the brick. The process must be carried very slowly the water in coming out of the clay may crack the surface. After the
watersmoking is completed, the temperature is increase to that required in oxidation. Oxidation begins in the later stages of vitrification, but the greater
part occurs between the temperatures of 800oF and 1300oF. At this stage most of the impurities are given off and the metals constituting the clay are
changed to their respective oxides. The highest temperature reached at this point is usually near

Artifacts Of Rossosville
Rossi stressed that the urban is artifacts, which is a kind of artificial environment made by human. The key issue, therefore, is to emphasize its artificial
character, which must establish a basic concept of human culture in urban culture. The city is not only an isolated artifact, he is a collective artifact.
The collective nature of the city brings it into the cultural zone. He believes that the city reflects the development of human rationality. Therefore, the
base point of Rossi 's thought is to look at the city from the view of architecture or by means of construction. That is, the mutual penetration of cities
and buildings. Buildings involve the human spirit when constructing. " Thus, the concept that one person has of an urban artifact will always differ
from that of someone who 'lives' that same artifact. These considerations, however, can delimit our task; it is possible that our task consists principally
in defining an urban artifact from the standpoint of its manufacture: in other works, to define and classify a street, a city, a street in a city; then the
location of this street, its function, its architecture; then the street systems possible in the city and many other things." Artifacts are not limited to
objective products, but also related to the city, such as history, geography, structure and other relevant facts. In short, architecture has the meaning
beyond the objective materials, but unifies the spirit of collective. The collective nature of this

Brick Wall Reflection
My father was always sharing with me, his stored words of wisdom as a kid growing up. One in particular that I heard many times over, was, this
world is made up of all kinds of people from all walks of life.
You just never know what people are going through in their life's and do not deserved to be judged by anybody and by all means not to be judged by
you. He followed up with the usual question, do you understand me? And from time to time, he would challenge me to make sure I did.
He stressed for me to take ownership of your own responsibilities and treat everyone with the same respect, that you want in return. Do not turn your
head, do not look down and never be disrespectful to anyone in passing.
Always be the first to extend your hand with a simple gesture, because you never know, you might need that same hand to help you up.
This brick wall represents the variation of tone and color of each brick. No two bricks are truly the same, but yet, very similar.
My father continued with; the human race is very much like this brick wall, different shapes, different tones and colors, and from different places from
all over the world.
While viewing this presentation, the focus was highlighting to compare similarities between the bricks and the human races, attributes.
But here is the true story behind the brick wall:
It's the mortar between these bricks that give it, it's strength to with stand all weather conditions to last for years.
As for the human race, this mortar

The Perseverance of The Cuban Swimmer
The Perseverance of The Cuban Swimmer Having a coach will help your persevere life's most difficult challenges. The inspiring theme of The
Cuban Swimmer is the perseverance of Margarita Suarez as she swims from San Pedro to Catalina island. The source of her perseverance comes
from her father, Eduardo. Margarita's inspirational source is a integral part of the play, without it she wouldn't have won the race and the play
would have been undeniably hopeless. If it hadn't had been for her perseverance she wouldn't have overcome the challenge she faced during the
turning point of the play. Having a coach in life will positively influence your character and your skills. Also, having a coach doesn't necessarily
mean that your playing on a field. A coach can be anyone from a role model to a parent or guardian, a teacher, a pastor, a mentor, or sometimes
even a best friend. One of the most important things for a coach to have is influence, and more important than that is that the influence he has on
his players must be positive. As a leader, a coaches job is to better his players on and off of the field. This is done by developing the character of his
players through encouragement and helping them understand that the game is more than just about winning. A good coach will always put the needs
of his players first before he considers himself as a factor. If a coach is successful his players will develop a strong sense of self–motivation. This helps
by allowing the player to

Mesopotamian Scientific Developments and Aspects The Mesopotamians pioneered several modern day scientific principles and tools and contributed
greatly to the development of future civilizations. (3) The Mesopotamians lived in what is in and near modern day Saudi Arabia between the rivers
Tigris and Euphrates. This is what lead to their name, as Mesopotamian means "between two rivers" in greek. Mesopotamia was a land of many different
city states and cultures unified for the advancement of all in Mesopotamia. These cultural differences run very deep within the different city states of
Mesopotamia, and these differences contributed heavily to the Mesopotamians scientific advances and ironically, lead to their actual unification as a
single culture and civilization.(3) (2) (5) One of the most important developments that lead into this was the development of story telling and writing in
ancient Mesopotamia. Writing in ancient Mesopotamia came about around 4000 B.C. and began to develop into a major cultural aspect in
Mesopotamia via the development of many stories and records. This writing was imprinted on clay tablets and other clay based constructs throughout
the existence of the civilization. Thousands of tablets and other Mesopotamian writings were made through chiseling or rolling shapes and hieroglyphs
onto the clay tablets. Many of these tablets have been discovered in relatively good condition, allowing them to be translated and

The Pont Du Gard In Nimes From 20-16 BCE, And The Pantheon
Roman Architecture has always been embraced deeply due to the simplicity and the aesthetic sensation it communicates. However, the actual reason it
is truly recognized, is by its very structured and functional design methodology. The idea of design methodology can be broken down into many
aspects. These aspects include ideas such as, materials used (brick and concrete), design concepts, design techniques (arches, vaults, domes) and how
each design satisfies its intended purpose and large exterior and interior spaces. There are many important Roman designs, but the two designs that
demonstrate the Roman design methodology is the Pont du Gard in Nimes from 20–16 BCE and The Pantheon from 125 A.D.

In the Pantheon, the primary materials used in the Pantheon include brick, granite, concrete, volcanic rock. The importance of concrete in this
designed is it helped create the so famous dome in the Pantheon. (Encyclopedia Britannica). The dome has a circular oculus in the middle which
emits light. The heavy dome is held by concrete foundations and is made of concrete which demonstrates how they mastered concrete so greatly.
According to (Encyclopedia Britannica), the dome measures about 142 feet in diameter and has a rising height of 71 feet above its base. (The
dome also is said to have a brick faced walls inside the design for support. The design also has arches and vaults that serve as a structural load. The
arches are laid around the dome in a manner that acts as compression to the dome. This design technique of using arches as support for domes is very
crucial to understanding why the Romans could have such heavy structures. The vaults also served as a crucial aspect in this design because vaults are
a series of arches that create a structural load. The arches helped created compression between the domes and the vaults which were in the bottom of the
pantheon help create compression with the arches making the dome very strong. Understanding the importance of the arches, vaults and domes in this

Pros And Cons Of Bonded Labor
INTRODUCTION
Bonded labor is defined as the labor when work by the labor is demanded back in return as repayment of debt. It is also known as 'debt bondage'
which mean bondage till debt is paid. The advance cash taken is known as "Peshgi". This is a modern type of slavery that enslaves millions of men,
women and children each year across the world including Pakistan. The labor is trapped into working for very long hours with little or no pay, in order
to pay back their debt.
Such labors, held in bondage includes men, women, children and usually whole families, and are mostly employed in industries such as agriculture,
brick kilns, fisheries, carpet weaving industries, shoe making, refuse sorting, power looms and stone/brick crushing. The majority of bonded labors in
Pakistan belong to some excluded groups and minorities.

What Are The Advantages Of Masonry
Applications and advantages of masonry construction
Masonry is a material that can withstand great compression forces that it can withstand tensile forces. It is for this reason that its use has declined in
recent years because it can mostly be used in low rise and medium rise buildings. Most people prefer to use concrete in high rise buildings because it
can withstand greater tensile forces. Masonry is however mostly used in the repairing of both low rise and high rise buildings. To take care of the
tensile forces people have used reinforced masonry, the reinforcement mostly used is steel. Masonry is used for both the construction of housing and
non–housing units.
The first advantage of using masonry for retaining walls is that can be used for a lot of functions. Masonry can be used for sound insulation, thermal
insulation, structural and division of space just to mention but a few. Masonry materials may sometimes be replaced with damp proof courses and
other materials. The second advantage is that masonry lasts for a long time without or little maintenance. If the materials are properly selected,
masonry can offer services for many years. Masonry will remain looking good for many years' even decades. Masonry has the advantage of looking
good because it comes many colours and textures. Masonry can also be built in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Comparison Between Florey Building And Baker House
Research and Comparison between Florey Building and Baker House
James Stirling, who is famous for untraditional design and rejecting functionalism, designed Florey Building of Oxford University in 1966. The
building presented the idea of Brutalism, focused on the form beauty of itself. Alvar Aalto, an architect sparkplugged the theory of humanism and
functionalism, designed Baker House of MIT in 1947. For him, functionality is an important way to provide harmonious life for human being. These
two buildings with different styles were both designed as the student dormitory for university, however, some similarities still can be found. This essay
will compare the differences and similarities about relationship between form and surroundings, function and circulation, and material expressing of
them.
Relationship between Form and Surroundings
For Aalto, building is the intermediary between human life and natural environment. He always arranges main part clearly at the beginning, and then
according to the surrounding environment, some moderate, natural elements would be applied. The site of Baker House was located along Charles
River. In order to avoid possible disturbing view onto the river, and for providing enough sunlight and quiet environment for every room, a curving
form was chosen. Rather than being rational and logical, the unreasonable shape provides another aesthetic type of solution allowing communication
with the river. Moreover, the main entrance and the

HOW CLAY BRICKS ARE MADE
INTRODUCTION
Clay bricks are used in a wide range of buildings from housing to factories, and in the construction of tunnels, waterways, bridges etc. Their properties
vary according to the purpose for which they are intended, but clays have provided the basic material of construction for centuries. Brick is the oldest
manufactured building material, and much of its history is lost in antiquity. The oldest burnt or fired bricks have been found on the sites of the ancient
cities of Babylonia, some of which are estimated to be about 6000 years old. Brick is, after all, virtually indestructible. The industry developed on
traditional lines, using hand–making processes for the most part. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Water can be added here or if it is a dry pan the clay is reduced to dust and water added later. Further crushing takes place through conveyor rollers
reducing the clay particles to about 1–2mm.
FORMING THE BRICK SHAPE
Most bricks are formed by one of two basic processes.
Extrusion
The clay body is mixed to a fairly stiff texture and is then loaded into an extruder where a worm screw pushes it along a barrel into a vacuum
chamber which compresses it through a taper and out through a die. The die is machined to a precise size and shape larger than the finished size
of the brick, calculating how much the clay will shrink during the drying and firing process. The clay emerges as a continuous brick shaped
column. Initially this is smooth but it can be modified by removing a thin sliver from the top and sides using a taught wire to produce a 'wiredrag'
effect or by placing textured rollers over the column to create a rusticated effect or even by blasting the column with sand. The clay column is then
cut into single bricks and palletised ready for the dryers or in some factories, are loaded directly onto kiln cars. Extruded bricks are generally perforated
and can be solid but cannot be frogged.
Soft mud moulding.
This covers a number of processes where

Pros And Negatives Of Masonry
I will be summarizing the Article "Masonry Walls: Materials and Construction" by Emeritus Henry. The article will be covering the positives of
modern masonry, its uses, and much more. The author will also touch on the use of mortar in masonry and how it is used. Masonry has been replaced
by concrete and steel for a number of uses in construction in the last century or so, but there are still many uses today that keeps masonry relevant.
Although masonry in itself calls for highly skilled workers, the productivity has been able to keep up with its competitors by becoming better at
moving all the materials needed, as well even premaking the mortar off site so that it is ready to use once on site. One reason that masonry has
become less popular in the recent years is that it yields a very low tensile strength compared to reinforced concrete. But in fact, reinforcements can also
be added to masonry to increase its tensile strength. There are a number of positives to using masonry. One of which being that one material can have a
number of functions; for example not only can a structure be built from masonry, but the brick will act as a fire retardant, protectant from the elements,
and also an insulator. Another advantage to using masonry would be its durability. Masonry requires little to no maintenance, and can last well over a
hundred years if properly layed. Architects love using masonry for their builds. Due to its wide array of colors and its flexibility the choices are

Essay on America Needs a New Currency
In the ever–changing and uncertain world we live in, peace of mind comes at a premium price. The federal government is working hard to fix the
current economic crisis. James Crowski, the Senior Counselor of the Economic–Relief Advisory Sub–Committee in United States Senate, is proposing
a radical shift in the way Americans interact with money. In hopes of reforming and strengthening the American economy, we propose to replace the
primary currency of the United States from coins and paper tender to gold–infused cinder blocks. For example, a 20 dollar brick will have 20 dollars
worth of gold molten into it. "After much deliberation" says Crowski, "we have determined that this is the best course of action to help the American

With wasteful consumer spending decreased, Americans will be able to focus their hard–earned dollars on more important items, such as flat–panel
LCD's and energy efficient hybrids. Thus Americans would become less consumer culture. Also, replacing the American currency with cinder blocks
would help curb muggings and other sorts of street violence. Many times, criminals target individuals who appear to be carrying cash, among other
things. However, since cash will become obsolete, individuals will not be able to carry money with them, thus eliminating a portion of street crime.
Another important aspect of cinder–blocks is the ease of use and the convenient nature of them, notes Jim Louse, author the book, I wish I knew how
I Got Here: An Autobiographical Account of How I Became an Author, a Scholar, and a Beekeeper. In his book he lays out the practical applications
of the cement blocks: "First and foremost, these (cinder) blocks can easily be stored as part of a larger structure. Imagine this; whole houses and even
neighborhoods created out of these blocks. People's houses will literally become their money." This gives homeowners incentives to keep their houses
in a clean condition. If their house's walls are made out of these blocks, and these blocks represent their money – they have an incentive to keep the

Heaviness Of The Brick
Suddenly the brick occurs to mind when the story starts by talking about lightness. A brick itself is light enough to be handled by hand, but a brick
house is hefty. The brick is made from dried mud; that makes clearer the meaning of lightness of brick. However, the land that holds the mud means a
full deadweight. Heaviness from lightness and lightness from heaviness, there are various possible ways to look into the relationship between
heaviness and lightness through the brick; that's why we should talk about heaviness while keeping lightness in mind and vice versa.
For example, the story of the three little pigs mirrors the heaviness of the brick. Their houses made of straw and sticks are blown away by the
simple breath, revealing conversely the heaviness and solidity of the brick as a construction material. It is also an ample proof that numerous ancient
buildings preserved today are mostly made of bricks or stones. The basilica where Leonardo da Vinci painted "The Last Supper" in 1494 was built of
red bricks. Aula Palatina, as known as the Basilica of Constantine, was built with fired bricks around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is also the result of the belief of the architect that the building should not oppose the environment. By constructing the same material in a more
environmentally efficient way, the building is light in appearance but it doesn't in functionality. The titles of some books on this architect who lead a

stubbornly prudent aesthetics of lightness: Leaves of Iron , Touch this Earth Lightly , Feathers of Metal

Reflection Of The Library Spirit In The Exeter Library
Exeter Library located in the middle of the grassland in Northern Philips Exeter Academy. The atmosphere around was very pleasant, where trees and
grass surrounded and people sat and enjoyed their time. After visiting to the Exeter Library, I was impressed by the spatial atmosphere in the library
deeply, sacred and dramatic. The "Library Spirit" was also Kahn's main point when he designed Exeter Library. I want to analyze the spirit from five
aspects, function, structure, material, geometry, and light in this article.
Introduction
The library was nearly eight hundred millimeters higher than the surrounding grassland and the building also had a nearly one hundred and fifty
millimeters higher step on all four sides. The whole building seemed quiet and introverted, however, the windows at the four corners and the four–side
arcade attracted me to walk close. Due to budget restrictions, the entrance was designed in the arcade, facing north to the academy and main street,
however, the continuous arcade faced to all sides which provided convenience for people no matter which direction they came from. Passing from
exterior to interior, two grand semi–circular stairs stood in front of me. Following the stairs, I finally entered the famous central hall, which was
surrounded by four large circular openings and a huge cross beam above. Through the openings, the arranged book stacks seemed inviting me to read
books. Seduced by the books, I went upstairs and found that I could still

Gothic Horror Story : Gothic'scary StoryTheme Terror
Gothic "scary story" Theme Terror
The place I had stumbled in was quiet. Very quiet; so quiet that I could hear the groans of war 20 miles to the east. The place was a large castle,
which looked as if it had been abandoned in a siege. The castle was dead and it felt as if it had been a hundred years since it had seen a human
being. I went in with extreme caution; if anyone saw me, they would kill me. I went inside the castle and saw not a man, not a statue, not even a
figure; I saw nothing. Nothing was there; the room was empty and silent. No sound fell upon my ears. It terrified me.
My morbid curiosity led me to further venture into the depths of the complex, but all I found in this castle was nothing. Nothing in the halls. Nothing
in the rooms. Not even a Cobweb in sight. It was as if the world and all its earthen creatures had not only abandoned this place but also avoided it for
all its maddening Isolation. The nothingness consumed me for an eternity. There was nowhere to go and nowhere to be. I had lost all knowledge of
my location. On my way, I had not found one window.
I had to yell out or scream. I did. I had called for my loved ones who I knew were safe at home in Sussex. I ran. I ran until I could not run anymore. All
I saw were blue bricks and a wooden ceiling rushing past. I was tired and all I could do was fall down on the floor. I stared at the ceiling. Waiting to die.
Then when what felt like hours had gone by I heard a faint tapping in the walls. It is as if

A schematic representation of brick clay resources in Great Britain is presented in Figure 1.
The market of bricks presented significant changes with the introduction of concrete blocks as the latter replaced common bricks in construction.
This resulted to a shift of the market in producing facing bricks, used for aesthetic purposes (Figure 2). The use of 'facing bricks' accounts for over
90% of demand (BGS, 2007) (DTI construction statistics) The production of facing bricks appears quite stable for the last seven years. Common and

much lower quantities (Figure 2), whereas the manufacturing of facing bricks have expanded significantly and currently is described by several
products with different colours, textures, surfaces and sizes. Clay tiles have also been affected by the introduction of concrete. Ceramic pipemaking
has declined considerably due to competition from concrete and plastic pipes. The only products that show an increase in demand are roofing tiles,
which have become more popular recently (BGS, 2007).
Bricks are produced either by extrusion or by the 'soft–mud' process. Extrusion is the commonest option. Two schematic diagrams describing the
manufacturing processes are presented in Figure 3 and

Brick + Mortar Analysis
Brick + Mortar has varied tracks bursting with energy accompanied by straightforward lyrics that comment on society mixed with personal

Brick Walls In My Life
During his lecture, Randy said that throughout your life you will encounter brick walls. These walls are meant to slow you down, but they are not
there to stop your goals. The walls actually push you to work harder in life to achieve those goals. Throughout life one will encounter failures every
wear they turn. Whether it is being fired from your job or failing a test. You will not go through your life without encountering failure. In fact it is a
good thing to experience failure once in a while. It keeps us humble about life and it shows that not everything is given to us. Throughout my life I
have experienced my fair share of brick walls. Although I was able to overcome most of them, I still couldn't overcome one. A few brick walls that I
have faced over the course of my life include overcoming a death of a close friend and family. However there was one brick wall that took me a while
to overcome. About two years ago, during a baseball game at home, I suffered a stage three hyperextension of my right knee while batting. The pain
was equivalent to having my knee dislocated. I had to exit the game and I feared that my baseball season may be over. The following day while on
a visit to the doctor, the worst of my fears were realized. The doctor said there was possibility that I would not play baseball the remainder of that
season. Over the next couple of weeks, I had to undergo physical pain everyday while trying to walk around school. It was so bad that it

Myth Of Amelia
Positive mind, positive vibes, positive life. This was the trilogy of sentences that Amelia repeated constantly in her negative–thinking mind. Thinking
positive was Amelia's biggest goal, but at the same time, it was her greatest fear. Such a simple task, yet it was nearly impossible for Amelia. All of
her family, friends, teachers, and therapists gave her the exact same seven–letter word; believe.
Believe. Amelia had studied this word hundreds, possibly thousands, of times. To have faith or confidence in the existence of, its definition read. The
existence of me Amelia often thought. Sadly, it was both faith and confidence of which she lacked. Faith and confidence were the two things that
formed a towering brick wall in Amelia's mind. And this brick wall blocked all positive thoughts from existing.

Ever since the diagnosis had been announced, Brooke blamed herself constantly. She thought her daughter's depression was brought on by her, which
it was not. Amelia's depression wasn't caused by anything, that's what the doctors informed Brooke. She sat up late at night thinking, "Where did I go

Building Blocks: St. Albert Brickyard
Building Blocks: St. Albert Brickyard Bricks are the building blocks that can help form the foundation of a community. From 1903 to 1932, many of
the bricks that built our community came from the St. Albert Brickyard. First Industry Fleuri Perron, who arrived in the area around 1883 and
became an entrepreneur, built the brickyard on the Sturgeon River. When it opened on North River Road, about an eighth of a mile east of downtown,
it was the first industry in the area. The company provided jobs for about 20 men. Its bricks were known for their strength and quality. For example,
they were used to construct Thomas Bowden Sr.'s house on Sturgeon Road, which he successfully moved to Edmonton in 1922. Legacy Perron

Nash Street Historic District Starkville Essay
The Nash Street Historic District a significant part of Starkville due to it being one of the cities earliest twentieth–century suburb. It signifies the
change of Starkville from a minor, agricultural town to a contemporary, university–oriented city in response to the development of Mississippi A&M
College (later Mississippi State University) in the 1930s. The district is also the largest and most complete concentration of significant 1930s suburban
architecture in the county. The significant period starts in 1932 and ends in 1940 when the last pre–war house was constructed.
Nash Street is Starkville's first subdivision, 61 subdivisions have been listed at the Courthouse from 1934–1974. The Nash Street Historic District
started the shift to suburban living and development in Starkville, because the first housing was formerly gathered around the businesses in the central
business district.
The District is also noteworthy for its architecture with Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman styles contributing to its recognizable
atmosphere. The building styles reflect the architectural desires of the university administrators, professors, and ... Show more content on

A Critical Analysis Of ' Cat On A Hot Tin Roof '
A Critical Analysis of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" by Tennessee Williams
Thomas Lanier "Tennessee" Williams background greatly influenced his stories, including his drama, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." One important
influence on the drama was the author's father, Cornelius Coffin. According to Harold Bloom, author of an analysis of "Tennessee Williams," in 1911
Williams was born to Cornelius Coffin and Edwina Dakin Williams in Columbus Mississippi. His father was a traveling salesman who was a drunk
and gambler, the family moved often, until Cornelius took and office job within the International Shoe Company moving the family to St. Louis. (Par
1, Pg. 11) Similarly, Williams father bears many similarities to the protagonist of his drama, "Cat on a hot Tin Roof" Brick. Brick lives with his wife in
Mississippi and shows a great indifference towards his family by taking part in drinking. In addition to his Father, another influence on the drama
was William's own sexuality. When Thomas was young his older sister Rose began showing signs of insanity, becoming withdrawn in her teen years.
Being forced into social situations by their mother eventually Rose was diagnosed with schizophrenia. In 1737 she underwent a fontal lobotomy and
was docile form then on, and Tom would go on as her caretaker. During the time of his sisters illness, feelings of homosexuality arose within Tom at
the same time, so he could never separate the two events.(Par 2, Pg. 11) Similarly, the Protagonist Brick has to

Nothing Wrong With Child Labor In The United States
Nothing Wrong With Child Labor
Imagine sending your son or daughter to work just to stay out of poverty or just to get by. This is what some brave parents have to do to their
children. The Fundamental reason many families in developing nations send children to work is for plain survival. Wages earned by these children can
mean the difference between passable subsistence or being absolutely miserable. Although sending children way before the age of 15–16 may seem
terrible looking at what children are working with dangerous tools, it's a way to stay out of poverty, and to continue on with life.
Although sending children to work young may seem bad, but being in a poor situation just a little more money can help a family a lot. According to
Douglas Clement,"families in developing nations send their children to daily jobs, despite the hardships they'll endure." he has a positive analysis on
working as a child, has benefits to families in developing nations. This proves child labor isn't, all that bad and helps out in developing nations
children that really need funds. Therefore child labor should be acceptable than letting kids suffer from absolute poverty, only to a certain degree and
not having kids work in hazardous workplaces. In addition to U.S. State laws in Sheryl Delozier's article in Pennsylvania the state ... Show more content

children can work in safe environments. And banning child labor would kill families in developing nations. In addition " children still work" says
Clement but "their hours and activities have been severely curtailed by both custom and law. Hence banning child labor should be out of the

directors (Knell). Like any other new coworkers that come to the company, they might encounter
arguments or disagreements. However, if both companies work together in a positive manner,
they may earn more net income combined. Hence, this will turn the negative into a positive
impact for both companies. "Leon's corporate and franchise stores had combined sales of
C$879.6 million and The Brick had corporate and franchise sales of C1.54 billion" (Knell). This
shows that the sales volume of The Brick is actually greater than its new owner, Leon's. This can
impact Leon's in a positive way because the revenue from The Brick will be added onto their
own revenue since they are now a combined company. The most important thing to take into
consideration is that buying out The Brick, Leon's will have one less competitor in the furniture
industry. All of the above will lead to increase in total revenue and net income for Leon's
furniture.

Descriptive Essay About My Place In High School
Have you ever been in a place that at first glance does not seem like anything special, yet the more time you spend in that place the more enjoyable
it becomes? As you are going into high school you will be taking several FACS classes. The more you know about the FACS room the better
prepared you will be for those classes. The FACS classroom at Holcomb High School is a delightful place to be. There are three different sections that
make up the FACS classroom. Starting first with the classroom its self, where all the desks are, and where you do your textbook assignments. The
second part of the classroom is the adjoining room that is made up of the kitchens that you learn to cook in. The last part is the small picnic area
outside. As you first walk through the door into the classroom, you will notice how large the classroom is. As you scan the room for the first time
you will see that the room has lots of pops of colors from pictures and posters on the walls. You will see the roughly twenty– five cheap plastic desk
and chairs. The walls are tan painted cinder blocks, the paint gives the walls a smooth yet sort of bumpy texture. As you look up to the ceiling you
will see ceiling tiles, that over the years have faded and been scuffed up. Looking down at the floor you will see that the floor is covered in well
abused glued down laminate tiles. The tiles stared as an off white and have slowly yellowed. Cabinets wrap around the room that alternate between a

Taking a Look at Bricks
Introduction
Bricks are mass of clay and water hardened by drying and firing (Kaushik 2007). They are the oldest and most durable building materials for mankind.
The clay materials used are compounds of alumina, silica mixed with small amounts of lime, magnesium or potash (Demir 2008).
Extrusion rates of twenty thousand bricks per hour are what modern brick manufacturers work with. Solid bricks used are of the size 215mm x
102.5mm x 65 mm and weighs 3 kg.
Brick manufacturing process
Harvesting of clay is by bulldozers, scrapers or mechanical shovels. Stockpiles are put to enable the blending of the various types of clay. The clay
piles are fed to the primary crushers to reduce the size particle to 3mm or less (Kaushik 2007). Conveyors carry the clay for secondary crushing in the
pan mill whose base is perforated the crushed material to pass through (Lingling 2005). Clay particles fall between high–speed rollers for grinding. Wet
clay is moulded into bricks.
Overall Dimensions and Tolerances
For this study the standard size of the manufactured brick is 215mm x 102.5mm x 65mm with a mass 3kg. This is according to the BS EN772 and the
BS PAS 70 standard methods of testing.
Masonry unit Strength
Bricks compressive strength varies according to the different qualities of clay material used and the firing method. Compressive strengths of bricks
range between 3.5MPa to over 50MPa (Demir 2008). The durability of the bricks cannot be fully determined by compressive strength.

Descriptive Essay On A Day Across The House
In a small town, a red brick two–story house resides on a dead–end road. Inside this home was a small, chubby girl with bobbed chestnut hair that
swayed back and forth about her round face. Her memory is held fast against the beautiful and happy home's heart. The house across the road is the
exact same on the outside but only with weather–stained, red brick, making it appear a little stranger, a little older, a little sadder than the proud house.
Inside that house lived a girl of young age. She was tall compared to the average child her year in school. Lanky with freckles and hair that was
charcoal. The aged, sagging house doesn't even remember her.
Everyday of the hazy summer, the raven child would run in the front of the tired house. The same goes for the adolescent girl in the red, strong brick
that stood tall across the street. The squeals and exclamations of fun, the sounds of scooters and bikes on the concrete floated through the air. If one was
making these sounds, the other child always slowly lured the front doors' seals open with the all–too–familiar creak of the hinges. Out of the auburn
brick threshold skipped one child, and out of the cracked and chipped home slinked the raven girl. They played together. The scrape of chalk on the
concrete, the familial roles of playing house, the bleeding knees from bike races. They were children in the summer heat so they ate popsicles, they
drank bubbly sodas, they devoured sweet, juicy watermelon. They ate their triangle sandwiches, their grapes off the tiny sections of vine, their salty
potato chips that left grime on their fingers. They wiped their grubby hands on their t–shirts and grabbed a basketball. They pounded dirt into the
ground with rocks for no reason other than they could. They were young and could do so without serious consequence. Soon enough, the green live
oak leaves would produce acorns and they would fall to the cracked ground. The house of sad brick would frown as it sent the Raven haired child off
to school every morning. Chestnut would stay inside in the mornings and watch cartoons, because she had not yet reached the age of school. Chestnut
would tickle the windows of the jolly home, nose fogging the glass, eyes skimming for

Car Seat Safety
As a mother to multiple children and a former nanny, I have plenty of experience in car seat safety. Even so, it's always best to keep up with the
most current info as some things will change as we learn more. Though changes may occur, there are some things that always remain constant with
car seat safety. Choose car seats according to age and size An infant cannot ride safely in a booster seat. Likewise, a larger child should not be riding in
a rear–facing infant seat. Read the manufacturer labels and follow the advice of your child's pediatrician to determine the proper car seat. It is generally
more accurate to fit a child's car seat according to weight and height than by age. One child may move into a booster seat at a younger age than ... Show

In this method, as soon as the raw bricks are cut to size, they are stacked on flatcars, slowly passed through long, heated tunnels and after from 8 to 72
hours (depending on the type of brick) they are dry. Now they are moved slowly through a long fire–brick tunnel, where they are heated and cooled in
from 36 hours to four days, also depending on the type of brick. One of Portugal's largest brick factories, located outside Lisbon, has a modern
continuous–car tunnel oven 180 m (590 feet) long! When bricks were manufactured manually, their form and dimensions varied widely from region to
region, adapting themselves to the local necessities. However, even the Assyrians recognized the need to standardize the dimensions of the most
widely used bricks of their time. In Portugal, the National Civil Engineering Laboratory made an inquiry of the principal factories as to the forms and
dimensions of bricks produced. The 44 factories that answered the inquiry produced 330 different models! This great diversity caused many
inconveniences, for manufacturer and consumer alike. As bricks occupy a very important role in construction here in Portugal, standardization would
be very beneficial, not only as to quality, but also as to dimensions and materials. With the results of this inquiry at hand, it was now necessary to
determine how to limit the existing types. Ninety–nine different factories and 36 of the larger

The Tipages And Advantages Of Calcium Silicate Bricks
Calcium silicate bricks are also called sand lime. They are often confused with concrete bricks but these are much harder and would not scrape quite
so easily. Calcium silicate bricks are manufactured by mixing lime, sand or crushed silicaceous together, with enough water to allow the mixture
completely hydrated to be moulded under high pressure. The bricks are then moved in and steam in autoclaved for three to fourteen hours to speed the
chemical hardening. Pigments can be added during the mixing stage. In their natural state, calcium silicate bricks are white to a creamy off–white
colour, but the addition of ochres (buff or cream colours), iron oxides (pink, red, brown or black) or chrome oxide (green) can enable a very wide
variety of colours to be produced. It easily to cut thus increase its workable. The weight of calcium silicate bricks is light than clay brick, the density is
about in 200–1000kg/m3, but it is rigid and sustainable for use of building material.

Seagram Building Research Paper

  • 1. Seagram Building Research Paper The Seagram building is simple but historic at the same time, looking at it from a far view you don't get to observe its uniqueness. The Seagram building was designed by Mies van der Rode and was completed in 1958, the building is mostly made of glass and metal, it shows simplicity which was what Mies van der Rode believed in. Uses bronze I–beams, which its mainly for the facade to look elegant since is not the main function in the structure to sustain the building itself, but inside the building is where the real support is located and is also luxurious with the bronze, marble and travertine. Big open space in front of the building causes the building to be pushed back from Park avenue, but it creates an urban Plaza. Lever House is located almost in front of the Seagram Building, was design by Gordon Bunshaft and Natalie de Blois and was completed in 1952. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike the Seagram building the Lover House occupied the space in front by making it for public use but at the same time showing that it belongs to them. • 2. The Controversy Of Material Displacement The controversy of material displacement, from their primary structural means. Material displacement, absurd formation and facadism, creates discussion, challenges the viewers and provokes polarised opinions. Architects within the current era, are expressive, artistically driven, technologically aided and therefore experimental. These factors have encouraged outrageous designs and statements. The outcomes have provoked controversy, which are expressed through various mediums, such as media, articles, debates and lectures. An architect that has created many controversial buildings, is non other than Frank Gehry. The individual whose works are considered between pragmatic professionalism and radical experimentation. One building that will be further articulated and examined, is the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, University of Technology Sydney (UTS). A building spawned from a sketch, and an idea of a tree house and as Gehry himself said "A growing, learning organism with many branches of thought, some robust and some ephemeral and delicate". The intention of the design was to develop it inside–out, which has undoubtedly shaped the branding and marketing efforts of the school. The greatest controversial statement made towards the building, is its absurd and somewhat organic display of a 'fabric' like, brick facade. A facade that has been sculpted in a way that has never been attempted quite like that before. All to achieve the concept of 'movement', a fabric like quality with a ... • 3. Analysis Of Daughters Of The Dust Introduction to film Daughters of the Dust (1991), Dir. Julie Dash Scene analysis Daughters of the dust revolves around an early 20th century African American family from Ibo Landing which is a time not shy of racism and slavery, especially in middle America. The scene depicted in the movie where a young girl is running through the forest in an all–white dress with a blue ribbon who seems to be being followed by a man in a hide and seek manor. The young girl disappears and the man stumbles upon a plot of land that is a graveyard, with headstones made from wooden planks, the man observes his surroundings. Presumably, this girl in white is the young voice narrating the next scene which pans through steam over to a flash back of the ancestors who were slaves. We look across a field of men and women who are working over these steaming wells, as well as the people in the background hanging soaked sheets up to dry. We see these people mixing over a steaming hole in the ground scraping around a grey paste. The workers then begin to pull the paste out of the steaming pits and scrape it into wooden molds. They appear to be making cement blocks as a young boy watches and older man collect all the wooden brick molds and systematically knocks the brick from the mold and piles them orderly on both his left as well as his right. While doing so he sings an old hymn, the boy seems to enjoy watching this process. Throughout the entire scene, there is a narration of a girl which speaks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Life Cycle Analysis for Brick Life Cycle Analysis For Brick 1Materials are very important in construction industry because with the combination of different material, we can create a very strong and unique building form. There are many type of material that commonly used in the construction industry, for example the glass, woods, bricks, stones, marble, concretes and etc. Brick is one of the most commonly used materials in Malaysia, because almost every house in housing area was built by bricks. From this essay I want to give analysis about the brick life cycle included its origin and how the brick being used after the end of its life cycle. 2Brick was appeared since the beginning of the civilization, which is the ancient Mesopotamia around 8000 BC. After that is the drying period, in which the air is heated to a maximum temperature for the clay being dried, the humidity is gradually decreased to allow the clay to dry uniformly all the way through. And the third which is the cooling stage, in which the temperature is gradually decreased to uniformity. The clay is not fully dried when placed in the kiln. Hygroscopic water is not driven off at ordinary temperatures or even at the boiling point of water. In fact, the temperature often rises quite a bit above the boiling point before the water is completely evolved. The watersmoking is accomplished by fire in the kiln furnaces. Wood is frequently used for this purpose, to avoid sooting. In the watersmoking period it is desired to heat up the brick, evaporate and remove the moisture, and to accomplish this successfully, it is very necessary that draft be strong. The watersmoking is the most critical point in the life of the brick. The process must be carried very slowly the water in coming out of the clay may crack the surface. After the watersmoking is completed, the temperature is increase to that required in oxidation. Oxidation begins in the later stages of vitrification, but the greater part occurs between the temperatures of 800oF and 1300oF. At this stage most of the impurities are given off and the metals constituting the clay are changed to their respective oxides. The highest temperature reached at this point is usually near ... • 5. Artifacts Of Rossosville Rossi stressed that the urban is artifacts, which is a kind of artificial environment made by human. The key issue, therefore, is to emphasize its artificial character, which must establish a basic concept of human culture in urban culture. The city is not only an isolated artifact, he is a collective artifact. The collective nature of the city brings it into the cultural zone. He believes that the city reflects the development of human rationality. Therefore, the base point of Rossi 's thought is to look at the city from the view of architecture or by means of construction. That is, the mutual penetration of cities and buildings. Buildings involve the human spirit when constructing. " Thus, the concept that one person has of an urban artifact will always differ from that of someone who 'lives' that same artifact. These considerations, however, can delimit our task; it is possible that our task consists principally in defining an urban artifact from the standpoint of its manufacture: in other works, to define and classify a street, a city, a street in a city; then the location of this street, its function, its architecture; then the street systems possible in the city and many other things." Artifacts are not limited to objective products, but also related to the city, such as history, geography, structure and other relevant facts. In short, architecture has the meaning beyond the objective materials, but unifies the spirit of collective. The collective nature of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Brick Wall Reflection My father was always sharing with me, his stored words of wisdom as a kid growing up. One in particular that I heard many times over, was, this world is made up of all kinds of people from all walks of life. You just never know what people are going through in their life's and do not deserved to be judged by anybody and by all means not to be judged by you. He followed up with the usual question, do you understand me? And from time to time, he would challenge me to make sure I did. He stressed for me to take ownership of your own responsibilities and treat everyone with the same respect, that you want in return. Do not turn your head, do not look down and never be disrespectful to anyone in passing. Always be the first to extend your hand with a simple gesture, because you never know, you might need that same hand to help you up. This brick wall represents the variation of tone and color of each brick. No two bricks are truly the same, but yet, very similar. My father continued with; the human race is very much like this brick wall, different shapes, different tones and colors, and from different places from all over the world. While viewing this presentation, the focus was highlighting to compare similarities between the bricks and the human races, attributes. But here is the true story behind the brick wall: It's the mortar between these bricks that give it, it's strength to with stand all weather conditions to last for years. As for the human race, this mortar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Perseverance of The Cuban Swimmer The Perseverance of The Cuban Swimmer Having a coach will help your persevere life's most difficult challenges. The inspiring theme of The Cuban Swimmer is the perseverance of Margarita Suarez as she swims from San Pedro to Catalina island. The source of her perseverance comes from her father, Eduardo. Margarita's inspirational source is a integral part of the play, without it she wouldn't have won the race and the play would have been undeniably hopeless. If it hadn't had been for her perseverance she wouldn't have overcome the challenge she faced during the turning point of the play. Having a coach in life will positively influence your character and your skills. Also, having a coach doesn't necessarily mean that your playing on a field. A coach can be anyone from a role model to a parent or guardian, a teacher, a pastor, a mentor, or sometimes even a best friend. One of the most important things for a coach to have is influence, and more important than that is that the influence he has on his players must be positive. As a leader, a coaches job is to better his players on and off of the field. This is done by developing the character of his players through encouragement and helping them understand that the game is more than just about winning. A good coach will always put the needs of his players first before he considers himself as a factor. If a coach is successful his players will develop a strong sense of self–motivation. This helps by allowing the player to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Mesopotamian Scientific Developments And Aspects Sterling 9/24/14 Miss Laura History Mesopotamian Scientific Developments and Aspects The Mesopotamians pioneered several modern day scientific principles and tools and contributed greatly to the development of future civilizations. (3) The Mesopotamians lived in what is in and near modern day Saudi Arabia between the rivers Tigris and Euphrates. This is what lead to their name, as Mesopotamian means "between two rivers" in greek. Mesopotamia was a land of many different city states and cultures unified for the advancement of all in Mesopotamia. These cultural differences run very deep within the different city states of Mesopotamia, and these differences contributed heavily to the Mesopotamians scientific advances and ironically, lead to their actual unification as a single culture and civilization.(3) (2) (5) One of the most important developments that lead into this was the development of story telling and writing in ancient Mesopotamia. Writing in ancient Mesopotamia came about around 4000 B.C. and began to develop into a major cultural aspect in Mesopotamia via the development of many stories and records. This writing was imprinted on clay tablets and other clay based constructs throughout the existence of the civilization. Thousands of tablets and other Mesopotamian writings were made through chiseling or rolling shapes and hieroglyphs onto the clay tablets. Many of these tablets have been discovered in relatively good condition, allowing them to be translated and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, the actual reason it is truly recognized, is by its very structured and functional design methodology. The idea of design methodology can be broken down into many aspects. These aspects include ideas such as, materials used (brick and concrete), design concepts, design techniques (arches, vaults, domes) and how each design satisfies its intended purpose and large exterior and interior spaces. The arches are laid around the dome in a manner that acts as compression to the dome. This design technique of using arches as support for domes is very crucial to understanding why the Romans could have such heavy structures. The vaults also served as a crucial aspect in this design because vaults are a series of arches that create a structural load. It is also known as 'debt bondage' which mean bondage till debt is paid. The advance cash taken is known as "Peshgi". This is a modern type of slavery that enslaves millions of men, women and children each year across the world including Pakistan. The labor is trapped into working for very long hours with little or no pay, in order to pay back their debt. Such labors, held in bondage includes men, women, children and usually whole families, and are mostly employed in industries such as agriculture, brick kilns, fisheries, carpet weaving industries, shoe making, refuse sorting, power looms and stone/brick crushing. It is for this reason that its use has declined in recent years because it can mostly be used in low rise and medium rise buildings. Most people prefer to use concrete in high rise buildings because it can withstand greater tensile forces. Masonry is however mostly used in the repairing of both low rise and high rise buildings. To take care of the tensile forces people have used reinforced masonry, the reinforcement mostly used is steel. Masonry is used for both the construction of housing and non–housing units. The first advantage of using masonry for retaining walls is that can be used for a lot of functions. Masonry can be used for sound insulation, thermal insulation, structural and division of space just to mention but a few. Masonry materials may sometimes be replaced with damp proof courses and other materials. The second advantage is that masonry lasts for a long time without or little maintenance. Comparison Between Florey Building And Baker House Research and Comparison between Florey Building and Baker House James Stirling, who is famous for untraditional design and rejecting functionalism, designed Florey Building of Oxford University in 1966. The building presented the idea of Brutalism, focused on the form beauty of itself. Alvar Aalto, an architect sparkplugged the theory of humanism and functionalism, designed Baker House of MIT in 1947. For him, functionality is an important way to provide harmonious life for human being. These two buildings with different styles were both designed as the student dormitory for university, however, some similarities still can be found. This essay will compare the differences and similarities about relationship between form and surroundings, function and circulation, and material expressing of them. Relationship between Form and Surroundings For Aalto, building is the intermediary between human life and natural environment. He always arranges main part clearly at the beginning, and then according to the surrounding environment, some moderate, natural elements would be applied. The site of Baker House was located along Charles River. In order to avoid possible disturbing view onto the river, and for providing enough sunlight and quiet environment for every room, a curving form was chosen. Personal Reflection On 08/20/2017 at 1002 hours FTO Wheeler #4361 and I responded to St. Luke's Hospital emergency room entrance, on 3555 Cesar Chavez St., regarding a women in a hospital gown trying to break the caller's vehicle window with a brick. Officer Wheeler and I were in full police uniform driving a marked patrol unit when we responded. 3D15A Officer's Perez #4305 and Sutton #2446 and 3D11A Officer's Perez #4305 and Holdbrook #708 responded to provide assistance. Upon arrival, Officer Wheeler activated his (BWC1) body worn camera which was later uploaded to evidence.com. As our patrol vehicle pulled up to St. Luke's emergency room entrance, I viewed a male later identified as (RV1) Devinelle Lavaughn Broussard with a cellphone in his hand attempting to prevent a female, later identified as (B1) Eleasia Ashanti Fraise, from throwing a (EVD1) red brick. I next saw Fraise throw the brick at a parked (D1) silver BMW, located along the south side walk. The brick fell to the ground and Fraise went to picked it back up. Fraise picked the brick up and moved in the direction of our patrol vehicle with the brick at shoulder height. I parked the patrol vehicle and immediately got out drawing my firearm to a low ready. Officer Broussard stepped out of the vehicle and drew firearm pointing it at Fraise (View Officer Wheeler's statement for further details). Officer Wheeler and I gave commands to Fraise to drop the brick. Fraise immediately complied and dropped the brick. I holstered my firearm ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Comparative Studies About the Physical Properties of... TECHNICAL INFORMATION SHEET 16 HOW CLAY BRICKS ARE MADE INTRODUCTION Clay bricks are used in a wide range of buildings from housing to factories, and in the construction of tunnels, waterways, bridges etc. Their properties vary according to the purpose for which they are intended, but clays have provided the basic material of construction for centuries. Brick is the oldest manufactured building material, and much of its history is lost in antiquity. The oldest burnt or fired bricks have been found on the sites of the ancient cities of Babylonia, some of which are estimated to be about 6000 years old. Brick is, after all, virtually indestructible. The industry developed on traditional lines, using hand–making processes for the most part. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Water can be added here or if it is a dry pan the clay is reduced to dust and water added later. Further crushing takes place through conveyor rollers reducing the clay particles to about 1–2mm. FORMING THE BRICK SHAPE Most bricks are formed by one of two basic processes. Extrusion The clay body is mixed to a fairly stiff texture and is then loaded into an extruder where a worm screw pushes it along a barrel into a vacuum chamber which compresses it through a taper and out through a die. The die is machined to a precise size and shape larger than the finished size of the brick, calculating how much the clay will shrink during the drying and firing process. The clay emerges as a continuous brick shaped column. Initially this is smooth but it can be modified by removing a thin sliver from the top and sides using a taught wire to produce a 'wiredrag' effect or by placing textured rollers over the column to create a rusticated effect or even by blasting the column with sand. The clay column is then cut into single bricks and palletised ready for the dryers or in some factories, are loaded directly onto kiln cars. Extruded bricks are generally perforated and can be solid but cannot be frogged. Soft mud moulding. This covers a number of processes where

  • 18. Pros And Negatives Of Masonry I will be summarizing the Article "Masonry Walls: Materials and Construction" by Emeritus Henry. The article will be covering the positives of modern masonry, its uses, and much more. The author will also touch on the use of mortar in masonry and how it is used. Masonry has been replaced by concrete and steel for a number of uses in construction in the last century or so, but there are still many uses today that keeps masonry relevant. Although masonry in itself calls for highly skilled workers, the productivity has been able to keep up with its competitors by becoming better at moving all the materials needed, as well even premaking the mortar off site so that it is ready to use once on site. One reason that masonry has become less popular in the recent years is that it yields a very low tensile strength compared to reinforced concrete. But in fact, reinforcements can also be added to masonry to increase its tensile strength. There are a number of positives to using masonry. One of which being that one material can have a number of functions; for example not only can a structure be built from masonry, but the brick will act as a fire retardant, protectant from the elements, and also an insulator. Another advantage to using masonry would be its durability. Masonry requires little to no maintenance, and can last well over a hundred years if properly layed. Architects love using masonry for their builds. Due to its wide array of colors and its flexibility the choices are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The federal government is working hard to fix the current economic crisis. In hopes of reforming and strengthening the American economy, we propose to replace the primary currency of the United States from coins and paper tender to gold–infused cinder blocks. With wasteful consumer spending decreased, Americans will be able to focus their hard–earned dollars on more important items, such as flat–panel LCD's and energy efficient hybrids. Thus Americans would become less consumer culture. Also, replacing the American currency with cinder blocks would help curb muggings and other sorts of street violence. Many times, criminals target individuals who appear to be carrying cash, among other things. However, since cash will become obsolete, individuals will not be able to carry money with them, thus eliminating a portion of street crime. Another important aspect of cinder–blocks is the ease of use and the convenient nature of them, notes Jim Louse, author the book, I wish I knew how I Got Here: An Autobiographical Account of How I Became an Author, a Scholar, and a Beekeeper. In his book he lays out the practical applications of the cement blocks: "First and foremost, these (cinder) blocks can easily be stored as part of a larger structure. Imagine this; whole houses and even neighborhoods created out of these blocks. People's houses will literally become their money." • 22. Heaviness Of The Brick Suddenly the brick occurs to mind when the story starts by talking about lightness. A brick itself is light enough to be handled by hand, but a brick house is hefty. The brick is made from dried mud; that makes clearer the meaning of lightness of brick. However, the land that holds the mud means a full deadweight. Heaviness from lightness and lightness from heaviness, there are various possible ways to look into the relationship between heaviness and lightness through the brick; that's why we should talk about heaviness while keeping lightness in mind and vice versa. For example, the story of the three little pigs mirrors the heaviness of the brick. Their houses made of straw and sticks are blown away by the simple breath, revealing conversely the heaviness and solidity of the brick as a construction material. It is also an ample proof that numerous ancient buildings preserved today are mostly made of bricks or stones. The atmosphere around was very pleasant, where trees and grass surrounded and people sat and enjoyed their time. After visiting to the Exeter Library, I was impressed by the spatial atmosphere in the library deeply, sacred and dramatic. The "Library Spirit" was also Kahn's main point when he designed Exeter Library. I want to analyze the spirit from five aspects, function, structure, material, geometry, and light in this article. Introduction The library was nearly eight hundred millimeters higher than the surrounding grassland and the building also had a nearly one hundred and fifty millimeters higher step on all four sides. The whole building seemed quiet and introverted, however, the windows at the four corners and the four–side arcade attracted me to walk close. Due to budget restrictions, the entrance was designed in the arcade, facing north to the academy and main street, however, the continuous arcade faced to all sides which provided convenience for people no matter which direction they came from. A Critical Analysis Of ' Cat On A Hot Tin Roof ' A Critical Analysis of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" by Tennessee Williams Thomas Lanier "Tennessee" Williams background greatly influenced his stories, including his drama, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." One important influence on the drama was the author's father, Cornelius Coffin. His father was a traveling salesman who was a drunk and gambler, the family moved often, until Cornelius took and office job within the International Shoe Company moving the family to St. Louis. • 37. Taking a Look at Bricks Introduction Bricks are mass of clay and water hardened by drying and firing (Kaushik 2007). They are the oldest and most durable building materials for mankind. The clay materials used are compounds of alumina, silica mixed with small amounts of lime, magnesium or potash (Demir 2008). Extrusion rates of twenty thousand bricks per hour are what modern brick manufacturers work with. Solid bricks used are of the size 215mm x 102.5mm x 65 mm and weighs 3 kg. Brick manufacturing process Harvesting of clay is by bulldozers, scrapers or mechanical shovels. Stockpiles are put to enable the blending of the various types of clay. The clay piles are fed to the primary crushers to reduce the size particle to 3mm or less (Kaushik 2007). Conveyors carry the clay for secondary crushing in the pan mill whose base is perforated the crushed material to pass through (Lingling 2005). Clay particles fall between high–speed rollers for grinding. Wet clay is moulded into bricks. Overall Dimensions and Tolerances For this study the standard size of the manufactured brick is 215mm x 102.5mm x 65mm with a mass 3kg. This is according to the BS EN772 and the BS PAS 70 standard methods of testing. Inside that house lived a girl of young age. She was tall compared to the average child her year in school. Lanky with freckles and hair that was charcoal. The aged, sagging house doesn't even remember her. Everyday of the hazy summer, the raven child would run in the front of the tired house. The same goes for the adolescent girl in the red, strong brick that stood tall across the street. The squeals and exclamations of fun, the sounds of scooters and bikes on the concrete floated through the air. If one was making these sounds, the other child always slowly lured the front doors' seals open with the all–too–familiar creak of the hinges. Out of the auburn brick threshold skipped one child, and out of the cracked and chipped home slinked the raven girl. They played together. The scrape of chalk on the concrete, the familial roles of playing house, the bleeding knees from bike races. They were children in the summer heat so they ate popsicles, they drank bubbly sodas, they devoured sweet, juicy watermelon. They ate their triangle sandwiches, their grapes off the tiny sections of vine, their salty potato chips that left grime on their fingers. They wiped their grubby hands on their t–shirts and grabbed a basketball. They pounded dirt into the ground with rocks for no reason other than they could. They were young and could do so without serious consequence. Soon enough, the green live oak leaves would produce acorns and they would fall to the cracked ground. The house of sad brick would frown as it sent the Raven haired child off to school every morning. Chestnut would stay inside in the mornings and watch cartoons, because she had not yet reached the age of school. Chestnut would tickle the windows of the jolly home, nose fogging the glass, eyes skimming for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Car Seat Safety As a mother to multiple children and a former nanny, I have plenty of experience in car seat safety. Even so, it's always best to keep up with the most current info as some things will change as we learn more. Though changes may occur, there are some things that always remain constant with car seat safety. Choose car seats according to age and size An infant cannot ride safely in a booster seat. Likewise, a larger child should not be riding in a rear–facing infant seat. Read the manufacturer labels and follow the advice of your child's pediatrician to determine the proper car seat. It is generally more accurate to fit a child's car seat according to weight and height than by age. One child may move into a booster seat at a younger age than ... In this method, as soon as the raw bricks are cut to size, they are stacked on flatcars, slowly passed through long, heated tunnels and after from 8 to 72 hours (depending on the type of brick) they are dry. Now they are moved slowly through a long fire–brick tunnel, where they are heated and cooled in from 36 hours to four days, also depending on the type of brick. One of Portugal's largest brick factories, located outside Lisbon, has a modern continuous–car tunnel oven 180 m (590 feet) long! When bricks were manufactured manually, their form and dimensions varied widely from region to region, adapting themselves to the local necessities. However, even the Assyrians recognized the need to standardize the dimensions of the most widely used bricks of their time. In Portugal, the National Civil Engineering Laboratory made an inquiry of the principal factories as to the forms and dimensions of bricks produced. The 44 factories that answered the inquiry produced 330 different models! This great diversity caused many inconveniences, for manufacturer and consumer alike. As bricks occupy a very important role in construction here in Portugal, standardization would be very beneficial, not only as to quality, but also as to dimensions and materials. With the results of this inquiry at hand, it was now necessary to determine how to limit the existing types. Ninety–nine different factories and 36 of the larger ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Example Of Persuasion Research Paper Brick masonry is a great job. There are many reasons why brick masonry is a good job, I have my own. I want to be a brick mason because I love to build things, Brick masons make good money, and brick laying can build a lot of character. First of all, I want to be a brick mason because I love to build things and put things together. Growing up I loved playing with blocks making towers, castles, and different types of objects such as chairs and beds. As I got older I learned how to lay actual brick with my aunt. When I was about 13 years old I helped my aunt lay a brick patio in the back yard of her house. I am now at Whitney M Young Job Corps Center being trained to become a nationwide brick layer and I absolutely love it. Also, brick masons ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. A Short Story : A Story Of A Story? "Once upon a time... Just kidding, but this story did happen some time ago. When I was a youngin, I had two best friends; both were girls and both were very dramatic. We had been friends since we were babes because our mamas' were best friends and we were always together. I didn't really think much bout' how I was a guy and they weren't, though I probably should've. That's where our story begins. Eightteenness was our senior year of high school and Ginny, Lily, and I– that's their names– were excited to be in our last year. We were ready to get out of school and conquered the world! Back then, you didn't have to worry about being eaten' by the Inflatables or being poisoned by the White Drink like we do now days. Towards the end of school year, Lily and I began to get close, in the non–friend way if you know what I mean. I think that ole Ginny knew from the beginning even though we tried to hide what we had. We slowly began to fall in love with each other romantically, and began to pay less attention to Ginny. In May of nineteenness, the three of us had just gotten out of school and Lily and I were planning to elope; the only person who knew, was Ginny and she was none too happy about it. "You guys are making a mistake!" She would tell us. "You're too young." It was the end of nineteenness when Lily was murdered in one of the most horrible ways possible. We had gotten married 4 days before and while we had decided not to elope, we had a simple wedding with a few family ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Tipages And Advantages Of Calcium Silicate Bricks Calcium silicate bricks are also called sand lime. They are often confused with concrete bricks but these are much harder and would not scrape quite so easily. Calcium silicate bricks are manufactured by mixing lime, sand or crushed silicaceous together, with enough water to allow the mixture completely hydrated to be moulded under high pressure. The bricks are then moved in and steam in autoclaved for three to fourteen hours to speed the chemical hardening. Pigments can be added during the mixing stage. In their natural state, calcium silicate bricks are white to a creamy off–white colour, but the addition of ochres (buff or cream colours), iron oxides (pink, red, brown or black) or chrome oxide (green) can enable a very wide variety of colours to be produced. It easily to cut thus increase its workable. The weight of calcium silicate bricks is light than clay brick, the density is about in 200–1000kg/m3, but it is rigid and sustainable for use of building material. Environmentally, the calcium silicate bricks are energy conservation, demand only half of the energy needed to manufacture the equivalent number of clay ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
