2. Auditory Blending &
Segmenting
Auditory Blending and Segmenting means
the joining and separating of letter
sounds.
3 sounds join – or blend – to form the word
'light':
/l/ + /igh/ + /t/ = light
'Bird' can be separated
Bird = /b/ + /ir/ + /d/
They are the exact opposite of one another.
3. Auditory Segmenting
Let's take these words and segment them,
splitting them into its phonemes:
cat = /c/ , /a/ , /t/
sun = /s/ , /u/ , /n/
pan = /p/ , /a/ , /n/
fan = /f/ , /a/ , /n/
hot = /h/ , /o/ , /t/
4. Auditory Blending
We can also take the phonemes and blend
them, combining them into words:
/c/ , /a/ , /t/ = cat
/s/ , /u/ , /n/ = sun
/p/ , /a/ , /n/ = pan
/f/ , /a/ , /n/ = fan
/h/ , /o/ , /t/ = hot
Blending and segementing are direct
opposites.
5. Auditory Discrimination
Another important auditory skill in the
study of phonemes is Auditory
Discrimination.
This means whether you can say the word
without some phonemes:
Sunlight without 'sun'?
Studying without 'ing'?
Teacher without 'er'?
Hotpan without 'pan'?
6. Syllable
To discriminate well, so you can spell
better, is the idea of a syllable.
A syllable is the next bigger unit of speech
sound in a word which contains a vowel
phoneme, creating a beat.
In the earlier example,
'light' has three sounds:
'light' = /l/ + /igh/ + /t/ . . . AND
Only one syllable, one beat.
