Why I Want To Teach For America Essay
1 I seek to join Teach for America, because I seek to continue to serve others in my community and
my nation. I want to give others the opportunities that I have been afforded and inspire those who
feel hopeless. Throughout my career, I have seen what transformational and servant leaders can
accomplish in government and the private sectors. Why can't we have that in our classrooms? It's the
place where we are investing into future communities. Why not instill those value early and often
into our children so they will better decision makers in the future?
Secondly, I see Teach for America as an avenue to transition quickly from my former career into a
new on, but a focused transition. I believe working with and through Teach for America I can be
placed in location or school where I can serve not only as a teacher, but as an example to others.
My experiences and background can demonstrate a different path is available. This is why I seek to
join. To offer my skills to better those who come after.

Since Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, 4,500 public school teachers were fired in the
city. The storm is the cause of this city's struggling public school system. Also, the public school
population has dropped dramatically. In 2010, studies found 4,000 teens, which is about 10 percent

While my dedication to teaching at some capacity has been a lifelong passion, I would like to
explain why I want to join Teach for America by starting at the beginning of my own academic
journey:
I could not read a sentence until I was in third grade, two to three full years behind my average
peer. In addition to being hopelessly behind in both reading and mathematics, I had terrible
experiences with bullying. The combination of poor academic performance and social issues was
deadly to my ability to learn. It took a year and two teachers who were incredibly dedicated to my

committed to making a difference. She tells stories of teachers becoming involved with families,
providing tutoring outside of the school day, and being strong inspiring leaders in the districts they

In her book, Kopp (2011) rights that "one of the most dramatic changes in our organization was in
our organizational culture." (p. 143) She describes the upward spiral of Teach for America and the
goal setting process she implemented with all senior level managers. She attributes these goals and
the continual feedback process to the staff's greater responsibility for the organizations

I am seeking to join Teach for America for a few reasons. The first reason is because I want to
make a change. So many of today's youth are lacking the required educational foundation needed to
succeed. The problem is not that they aren't smart enough or that they are not capable of high
achievement. The problem is that they are not given the same opportunities that are found in a
different zip code or a neighboring town. The lack of equality in the education system is disparaging
and is a social injustice effecting children that do not have any control over the area where they live.
It is my belief that many students in low–income communities can benefit from having someone

importance of teaching. The line is, "We mustn't forget, we are a teaching institution." In the system
where I teach that is a direct and institutionalized reference to a difference from other colleges of the
system.
No one ever seems to get around to saying just what teaching is.

According to the article, What Makes a Great Teacher?, a student's education solely depends on the
teacher alone and how he or she performs in the classroom. In this case, I am in favor of having the
program, Teach for America, ensuring a good and ever–changing education for those students in
need. The videos embedded within the article gives a clear depiction of what a "good" teacher
appears and acts like in front the classroom. These examples derive from actual teachers working

Any student, whether in elementary or college, learns better when the subject matter is
thought–provoking and appealing. Traditional and old curriculum provides a baseline for students to
meet and follow. Also, traditional curriculum is based of individualism and discourages exchanges
between the student and teacher. Individual work teaches the child to develop internal critical
thinking skills but it may bore the student. Teachers should continually interact with their students
and challenge the student to think outside the box. Great teachers in today's system should help
students develop a new way of thinking about history, math, english, and science and their education

I believe Teach For America would allow me to inspire families and their children to learn and
embrace education. As a young child born of immigrant parents, living in Southern California's
Coachella Valley, I experienced the transition from a low–income community to a mid–income

encourage youth to reach their potential. By speaking to local communities and schools I served as
an advocate for youth who believed they had no voice or recognition in their communities. The small

Magellan Behavioral Health in Arizona– shared the passion to educate local public schools and
communities in disadvantaged urban areas about the stigma attached to mental illness. This allowed

To me, the Teach for America core values is a commitment to never settle. Teach for America is

learning new leadership styles, network with other student leaders to gain ideas, as well as, learn

I am extremely interesting in Teach For America because I live by the motto, "Be who you needed
when you were younger". I am a first generation Mexican–American student from the inner city of
Toledo, Ohio and attended a public school district where 80 percent of students receive free

The simple and honest truth is that I want to make a difference. Joining Teach For America would
be valuable to my society, and to myself. I always dreamed of joined the Peace Corps or some kind

While I read "Alligator–Crocodile" and it was such a great story, I could not stop wondering about
how many students out there are not getting that much needed emotional and social learning while
attending kindergarten because the school is already obsessing about preparing them for tests?
